I literally had trouble sleeping yesterday because I suddenly got a ton of ideas for this AU. Dunno if someone has already done this, they probably have, but whatever.

Ideas and stuff under the cut!

Edit: Alisha, Rose, Dezel, Zaveid and Symonne are now a thing

Story, world, etc.:

Mostly the same as Avatar’s, but with a few exceptions:

Unlike with Avatar, the Avatar got killed during the Air Nomad genocide. The next Avatar, Sorey, thus got born in the Southern Water Tribe.

Heldalf is the current Firelord. He’s a brilliant strategist, so the war is already much at the same point as in Avatar. He’s convinced the Avatar, if they’re even still alive, is hiding in the Northern Water Tribe.

Symonne is Heldalf’s right hand man. She isn’t his family, but her skills and dedication have earned her just as much trust, perhaps even more. Heldalf is considering her his heir, as he doesn’t have any kids himself.

The character’s personalities are also pretty much the same as in the game.

Sorey:

Is the Avatar. Didn’t know this until he accidentally firebended while hunting with Mikleo.

After this was found out, he was sent to the Nothern Watertribe by Gramps (who had his suspicions since Sorey was young, but they were never confirmed until then). Mikleo accompanies him by sneaking onto the boat.

Still childhood friends with Mikleo. Has feelings for him, but can’t tell whether they’re romantic or platonic.

Is a decent waterbender, but not as good as Mikleo.

Had a lot of trouble leaning airbending, even with the help of Dezel and Zaveid. At the end of the story, this remains his weakest element.

Gets taught how to divert lightning along with Lailah by Laphicet (much like Iroh did with Zuko), who’s wandering the world with the exile Velvet.

Buys his feather earrings on the way to the North Pole.

Still happily makes detours for ruins, now that he actually has the chance to explore them on his journey around the world.

Mikleo

Master waterbender. Do not get into a fight with him anywhere, even if there’s only a puddle. He will whoop your ass. (This isn’t much different from the game, I guess)

Mostly self-taught, as he and Sorey were pretty much the only waterbenders in the Southern Water Tribe. After getting taught at the Northern Water Tribe along with Sorey, his skills improved immensely to the point were he is able to actually teach Sorey in their master’s place(as opposed to practicing with him like before).

Has feelings for Sorey, and is all too aware they’re not platonic.

Sorey giving him a handmade necklace as thanks for sticking with him through everything after they leave the Northern Water Tribe definitely doesn’t help.

They do get together at the end.

When he heard waterbending could also be used to heal, he occasionally snuck in while the girls were taught to heal. This got discovered, and Mikleo ended up in a fight with his master when he tried to defend his reasons for wanting to be a healer despite being a boy, and his master refusing to teach him to fight because of that.

Gladly joins Sorey on ruins detours, although he’s a bit more self-conscious about it.

Lailah

Daughter of an influential Fire Colony Lord. She joins Sorey, Mikleo and Edna while they were on their way to Ba Sing Se out of the unhappiness she felt living with her father and her worries about what would happen to the world once the Fire Nation would conquer it.

Despite not having gained her powers from an oath in this universe, when the conversation hits a sore spot, she will still hit Random ‘O Clock.

Has been taught firebending by the greatest masters in the colonies, so she teaches Sorey on their travels. Her fighting style, while doing this, eventually evolves to be more her own (her in-game fighting style).

Takes over Mikleo’s ‘group mom’ role in less than a day after joining the team.

Edna

When the group stops in a town in the middle of the Earth Kingdom, they hear a story about a ghost walking the streets at night, scaring the hell out of the townsfolk. This turns out to be Edna, who walks to the town entrance every night in the hope of her brother returning from his journey.

She wears the formal clothes because Eizen had once said that she looked really beautiful in those. Every evening when she goes to the town entrance, she wears them, despite not liking them much herself.

After a misunderstanding when the team went to investigate the ‘ghost’, they find out Edna is an earthbender, and a very skilled one at that. They do some investigating during the day, and find out she might be living in the luxurious mansion at the top of the hill.

When they visit the mansion, they find Edna tending to flowers (guess which ones) in the garden. She tells them to leave, but thanks to Sorey somehow breaking through the mental walls she put up, she ends up telling them about her brother.

He often traveled around the world, but she would still receive letters from him almost every week, but they stopped about a year ago. After a few months she developed a habit of going to the town entrance at night. It somehow puts her a little bit at ease.

Eizen sent her her necklace as a gift after he’d briefly visited the Water Tribes.

Sorey suggests she joins him and his friends on their journey, as they might encounter her brother along the way. Mikleo, not completely okay with this but because he got an idea nonetheless, jumps in and asks Edna if she could teach Sorey earthbending along the way, as he is the Avatar. Edna agree with a shrug and smirk.

Not soon after Mikleo gets his second name ‘Meebo’.

Before they leave, Sorey suggests to Edna they should clear up the ‘ghost’ issue before they leave. Edna initially doesn’t care to, but after Sorey asking her again and again, she gives in and tells the town.

They get chased out of the town by an angry mob.

Afterwards, Edna teaches Sorey à la Toph in ‘Bitter Work’. She softens her demeanor after some time, though.

“Alright, now take your shoes off.”

“Why?”

“You’d be surprised how much sensing the earth with your bending will improve your bending itself.”

“But you’re wearing boots.”

“Because I’m already an expert. Now take your shoes off!”

That’s basically it for now. I’ll do Alisha, Rose, Zaveid and Dezel some other time. I have some ideas for them, but not a whole lot (and I don’t look forward to combining the wind seraphim’s designs with the air nomads’)
