The Moon's Lies
Summary: Kylo Ren x named!Reader. It was never going to be black or white, Light or Dark, friend or foe. Who wouldn't let the galaxy burn to keep their loved ones safe?
Warnings: 18+, Murder/"execution," graphic violence, unspoken threat of bodily harm, twisted morals, Kylo Ren being himself
Masterlist
Canon Divergence Notes: There is no Rey. Finn is the destined Jedi, and he leaves the scar on Ren’s face during the climactic fight on Starkiller Base. The only original canon kept after TFA is the destined Jedi (Finn) leaving to find Luke and Snoke pushing Kylo Ren to the breaking point, continuing the student-kills-the-master cycle. Summary: No Rey. Finn is training to be a Jedi. Kylo Ren takes the throne from Snoke.
This chapter is the only pre-TFA part of the story. Everything after that is in the AU as described.
A/N: Holy shit, I'm having so much fun with this. You all have no idea (but you will soon). Out here crafting whole-ass mythologies and cultures for this shit. Literally forgot to post this first chapter because I'm neck-deep in the next. Please, please, please do comment! I post for interactions with friends new and old. Otherwise I'd hoard all my embarrassing stories like the grouchy old dragon I really am.
1.
He needed to maul something.
His lightsaber practically vibrated on his belt, answering the pull of itching hands as Kylo Ren stormed into the planet-side depot. Civilians scattered from their orderly lines in front of the First Order’s regional bureaucratic office, startled like so many kaadus. The system had so little to offer, the Order couldn’t even justify a separate complex for the port authority and notary.
A shabby little base on a barren little world. If he could, he’d sink his saber to the planet’s core and kill it all in one, fell stroke.
What a waste of his time.
The rebel insurgent had nothing. They hunted him to the edge of the First Order’s territory only to discover a dead end whose handful of contacts met the heat of Kylo’s blade long ago. They’d missed something. He’d missed something. Instead of fresh leads into the Resistance’s plans, he would leave empty handed. This detour took weeks, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that their enemies were planning something. But in the end, the only thing the dead Rodian had been good at was hiding. Any trooper could’ve shot the scum and been done with it. No need for the Knights of Ren.
He looked like a fool.
Rage tipped over the edge of reason, flooding logic, and plans, and anything but the dark urge to destroy.
He marched through the door, well ahead of his knights. The stormtroopers were nearly as eager to avoid his wrath as the civilians, and he burst into an empty hall. The faintest conversation reached him, a hum of living Force further inside. He followed it. Down the hall. Around the corner. Gathering fuel to further spark his hate for this place and all the people in it as he approached.
A crisp, core world accent he had no doubt belonged to an officer carried farthest.
“I’m afraid it just won’t do. If you want clearance to leave for Gan Moradir, I’ll need those credits in my hand. Today.”
“You already have them.”
The second voice almost surprised Ren. He could barely feel the speaker’s signature, and he rested his hand on his saber, ready for a battle. No one unskilled in the Force could veil themselves like that.
From the sound of things, he had two valid targets to suffer for his humiliation. With new focus, he prepared to take the last corner, the heat in his blood ready to burn through the traitors and fools ahead.
Just out of sight, the officer tsked. “Not enough, I’m afraid.”
“Do you plan on demanding more every time we visit your system?”
“I could.”
“I’m afraid that will be very bad for trade.”
Ren saw the pair before they saw him. A First Order corporal with his hands clasped behind his back and a sneer on his face stood opposite a civilian girl, both oblivious to their approaching doom.
“Corporal.”
The man practically jumped out of his uniform, eyes bugging wide. The girl barely even flinched, following the officer’s panicked gaze with guarded curiosity. Ren would deal with her after he thinned the ranks. It was important to cut out rot before it spread, after all.
“Lord Ren!” The officer’s voice wavered, nearly breaking like a teenager’s as he took two steps away from the civilian and bowed to his superior. “My apologies. We’d heard your knights may be in the system, but we had no idea you’d actually –”
“What is the First Order’s standing on bribery?” He asked like he didn’t know simply so the criminal would recite his own conviction. Let him know how he’d failed. Let the fear string out his last moment.
The corporal’s mind couldn’t keep pace with his spiking adrenaline. He shifted, eyes darting for an escape, an excuse, as he tried to drag an explanation through his dry mouth.
“Well, I…”
Ren had no mercy. And no patience. His hand clenched over his blade’s hilt, and he imagined he could already feel the subtle vibration as it came to life to end another’s.
“Well?”
The corporal swallowed, and Ren watched the confidence roll away down the man’s throat.
“Soliciting or accepting bribes in any form, be it credits or goods, is a class three offense, sir.” He spoke clearly. Responding to a clear order with clear rules he would’ve learned by rote in training. He knew the consequences for disguising this theft behind the First Order’s banner, and now Ren would reveal a new part of the corporal. Blood. Bone. The messy things he wrapped out of sight beneath his skin.
Ren hummed. A mockery of consideration as he swayed nearer, forcing the smaller man to stare up at a painful angle. Decapitation was too neat for such a selfish little traitor. Maybe he’d sheer away half the man’s chest. Or leave him in a dozen pieces for his command to discover.
“I see.” He stalked forward another step, savoring the building dread like a cool wind beneath his mask. “And what is the punishment for class three offenses?”
The officer’s lingering hopes to put off his superior with a lie – Blame the girl, his mind screamed – finally crumbled. The dread Force-wielder had caught him. He knew enough to damn him. He’d been judged. He’d been sentenced. Only one step remained. Kylo Ren loomed, a Loth cat playing with vermin caught raiding the larder, and his uniform was an invitation to deal justice, not the shield the corporal once believed. He backpedaled, nearly foaming at the mouth as he spluttered a final plea for mercy.
“Lord Ren, please! I merely –!”
Red light and a crackling hum cut him off.
Ren speared the traitor through the belly, letting the fool totter backwards, wheezing for a breath that would never come. The corrupt officer groped over his exposed diaphragm as he tumbled to the floor, and his head met the polished floor with a crack as he continued pointlessly gasping.
It wouldn’t be a quick death.
Satisfied, Ren looked at the second actor in this little scene. She’d barely flinched when he struck down the corporal, but her attention remained fixed on the dying criminal. Ren waited for the inevitable wave of panic, ready to toy with a fresh target, but the life ending at her feet held her gaze. Something about her blunted his senses, and he struggled to pry into her mind beyond what she projected: caution and studied calm.
Maybe it was shock. Or maybe she needed reminding of her own mortality.
Ren cut off the corporal’s death rattle with a stroke of his saber, and as the head rolled across the hall, the girl finally looked up to meet his gaze. He glowered back through his visor, itching for her reaction.
She bowed. Maintaining the poise of a diplomat who hadn’t just witnessed a brutal execution, she dipped at the knees, dropping her eyes in polite deference before rising to meet him all over again. Still as a lake.
His lightsaber hissed, twisting in his grip. He pointed it under her chin, demanding she answer every question he hadn’t asked.
“You.” He didn’t bother with the show he’d put on for the corporal. Her careful placidity irritated him, and it felt like her very presence muted his senses when he hunted for her fear.
He looked again, noting the grey stone pendant and loops of beads she wore. A memory teased the edge of his lingering rage, dragging his focus away from his quest for bloodshed. He’d seen that material before. He recognized the numbing sensation in the Force from a failed project to build better restraints for Force sensitive prisoners. “What is that?”
Her fingers rose to the pendant, brushing over an unfamiliar pattern of engraved stars.
“It’s Selenubis, sir.” She paused, flicking her gaze over his mask like she might find a clue to his expression. When he didn’t answer, she pushed ahead. “A traditional protection charm from Lethe. If it’s offensive to the First Order I can come again with out it…?”
Behind his mask, he ground his teeth, clawing against the foggy wall so few of her thoughts penetrated. Selenubis proved useless to the First Order when it became clear the stone did as much to shield a prisoner from other Force users as it did to shackle the target.
She wanted to return without her shield? She wouldn’t leave with it. He’d hack it off her neck, and if he didn’t like what he found in her head, she wouldn’t leave with that, either.
His flickering saber reflected in her eyes as he angled it up, forcing her to expose her throat as red lightning reflected in bottomless reservoirs of control. He didn’t believe for a second she was ignorant of the power in her little trinkets and beads.
Just as he prepared to cleave through her jewelry – and likely leave a deep burn to remember him by – one of his knights burst into the hall.
“Commander. The Supreme Leader requests your presence. Immediately, sir.”
His foiled rage rebounded, arcing like a current through his bones and burning him with his own intent as he growled in frustration. The sound hissed through his modulator.
This would have to wait.
Deactivating his saber, he stepped back, pivoted on his heel, and marched back the way he came. He would have to relive his humiliation at his master’s feet, and there was no time to vent his frustrations.
He left no orders in his rush to answer his master’s summons. No one held the girl or even took special note of her name and business as he knelt before Snoke’s projected image, and by the time he returned to the hall, she was gone.
The documentation the dead corporal had been withholding, a pile on the floor by his headless corpse, had gone with her.

A surprising parallel with Ghostbusters
I wanted to see if the mention of the only person who went missing before Will could be relevant. Maybe it is.
First of all, Hopper sleeping with the librarian always felt random to me. But maybe the writers wanted to connect this information to the library.
We know that it’s important. It’s where Joyce and Hopper find Will, and where in S2 he sends the soldiers to die (yeah, I think the tunnels and the animals used as incubators for the demodogs are under the library). And at the end of S4 the library is the convergence point of the gates.I think it is possible that we’ll find out who the person who vanished in the 20s is. Maybe it’s the old skeleton in the library. Or maybe in the library there were some important information on them?
Anyway, that’s not the cool part.
1923 in other stories ST has parallels with
In Rose Red (parallels here) John Rimbauer, the owner of the haunted mansion that keeps growing like a cancer (like the UD/tunnels), is killed by his wife.
In the 1923 classic horror movie, Warning Shadows, during a dinner in the house of a wealthy count, a Shadowplayer gives the guests visions (here). This reminds me of the dinner at the Creel House.
The director, Robison, was born in Chicago: in the Creel House’s attic there’s a musical score and the only word I can see is Chicago.
And Robison’s first movie, Night Horror, is about a woman who receives a message from a notary that her grandfather died. Virginia moved to Hawkins after her grand uncle died.
And what about Ghostbusters and Ivo Shandor?
He was the architect behind 550 Central Park West, the building that becomes a portal the god Gozer uses to try to invade our world.
I knew ST has a lot of parallels with Ghostbusters, but then I found out that Shandor completed the apartment building in 1923.
Who is Ivo Shandor?
In 1920 he became a cult leader (parallel with the cult of Vecna?) and constructed the building using “magnesium-tungsten alloy and cold riveted girders with cores of pure selenium”. The special metal was a conductor that encouraged paranormal activity.
Ray: “The whole building is a huge super-conductive antenna that was designed and built expressly for the purpose of pulling in and concentrating spiritual turbolence.”
Egon: “They conducted rituals up on the roof, bizarre rituals intended to bring about the end of the world.”
Shandor thought that the world was too sick to survive, so he began to worship the sumerian god Gozer and wanted it to destroy the world.
So.
A haunted house. A house with a Shadowplayer, and a cult leader who built a building as a gate for an evil god.
I really doubt it’s just a coincidence.
Steve and Dustin put a demodog in the Byers' fridge. The Terror Dog Zuul in Ghostbusters appeared in Dana Barett’s fridge.
In Ghostbusters, the creatures that opened the gate are the Gatekeeper and the Keymaster
(thinking about all the keys and keyholes in S4)
Not to mention that Finn plays one of the characters in Ghostbusters Afterlife where (SPOILER) Ivo Shandor appears.
The two Peters
Also. Venkman’s love interest Dana got possessed. We thought this was a parallel between Lumax and Byler, since both Will and Max got possessed/ cursed. But what if it's also foreshadowing of Edward and Henry, whose fake name is Peter?
Two people, Mike and Lucas, playing the same character: Peter Venkman...
And in S4 we see the name Peter (plural) associated with keys
Much to think about. @lilitblaukatz (I tag you because this is the most interesting and unexpected connection I found)

The Ultimate Reylo Fanfic List
* = highly recommend (aka if you’re going to read anything off this list read this)
Canonverse AUs
***All Our Days - E - 221k - "I can listen no longer in silence."The hologram projection of his strangely handsome face is cobalt blue, flickering, and full of static. "I must speak to you, Rey. You… you pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me that I am not too late.” He groans, runs his hands through his dark, silver-streaked hair, then refocuses his gaze on the holorecorder. “I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight and a half years ago. Do not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death."Here the recording of Ben takes a deep breath, and looks down at something outside the holorecorder’s field of view. Perhaps at his hands, Rey manages to think, through the veil of shock and timid, fluttering hope. She wishes she were there with him, so she could take them in her own, and offer him the confidence to carry on.But this is only a hologram, so she must wait. Eventually, when he looks up again, his features have settled. He looks… Fierce. Determined. Self-assured."I have loved none but you," he says. - canonverse jane austen au

She pulls off her sweater and takes him inside her again and rides him into the night. - canonverse far from the madding crowd au
*landscape with a blur of conquerors - E - 362k - "While I share your contempt for this situation in which we find ourselves, do not mistake it as apathy," he hissed through gritted teeth, dark eyes burning. "I hardly expect your disposition to sweeten, but I will be damned if I allow my future Empress to behave in a manner that reflects poorly on me and on the First Order!""If you allow?" She wrenched her arm out of his viselike grasp, batting his hand away for good measure. "I don't belong to you. I don't belong to anyone.""That might have been the case back when you were a scavenger on that pitiful scrap heap of a planet, but now?" His sardonic gaze flickered over her silk robes and the jewels woven through her elaborate braids. "Now you are the Chume'da, and the Chume'da belongs to her people. Their fate is entirely in your hands. Should you cross the line, it is they who will suffer for it. Am I making myself clear?""I hate you," she said bitterly. He sneered at her. "See? Already you are acclimatizing so well to married life." - arranged marriage au

Mitan, Midi - E - 83k - After a French notary contacts Rey to inform her she's inherited a house in the Drôme (France), she decides from one day to the next to quit her job and move there. Theoretically. - french country side au
*A Treehouse Covered in Salt - E - 34k -High school senior Rey Johnson has lived next door to Ben Solo her whole life. The two could not be more different and at school, Rey wouldn't be caught dead in his presence. That doesn't stop her from sneaking out to their treehouse every night. Despite her unwillingness to be friends with Ben in the light of day, he has always been there with her in the darkness. - high school au
Initial - M - 45k - A Soulmate AU in which you are born with the initials of your soulmate marked on the nape of your neck. Easy enough, right? Except for two people who don't use their real names. - soulmate au

A week of seclusion was just what she needed. And then Ben Solo arrived. - snowed in au
into the great laughter of mankind - E - 30k - There is something about watching Rey put her mind to task. Ben can't put a name to this something, exactly— all he knows is that it fascinates him like nothing else has in a long, long time."Dr. Solo?" She glances over at him. "What do you think?"I think I'm doomed, he wants to say but doesn't. I think the curse of the pharaohs has nothing on you. I think you are my Egypt. - archaeologist au
(now it’s) Time to Learn - M - 86k - “You’re a teacher?” Ben doesn’t look like a teacher. At least not like any teacher Rey has ever had. - teacher au
For Now - E - 8k - There are plenty of things he could say, but he doesn’t. Buying you muffins makes me excited to get out of bed in the morning. Orion - E - 14k - Rey Niima finds herself in the Saharan desert trying to heal wounds from her life, and Ben Solo is there too, fixing himself along the way. - roadtrip au
Embers - E - 34k - All the myriad things he’d been—someone who made her laugh; the warmth on the other side of the bed; her best friend—those things, Rey had buried. Rey left Ben two years, three months, and sixteen days ago. But who's counting? - getting back together au
Gilded - M - 11k - Everyone had two marks, one for class and another to identify a soulmate. She only had one: green rings on her finger, proof she was part of the laboring class. It made matters lonely, but never unbearable.Until she met him. He had two sets of marks—had a soulmate—and she did not. - soulmate au
flutz - E - 27k - Rey was determined to have no distractions during her first season in Senior Ladies figure skating. She swore that Olympic medalist and figure skating legend Ben Solo was not going to change that, no matter how intent he seemed on proving her wrong. - ice skater au
oh autumn, oh teakettle, oh grace - E - 30k - "So let me get this straight," he says. "You're a dryad.""Quite so," she cheerfully replies."Like an actual—" His hand rises to make a feeble gesture at the towering elms that surround them— "tree-dwelling, speaks-with-animals, has-magical-powers, frolics-through-the-woods-in-orgiastic-pagan-frenzy dryad?"She wrinkles her delicately freckled nose. "Well, I don't know about orgiastic frenzy, that's really more of a maenad type of deal."He looks her up and down, taking in her pretty face and her slender figure in the skimpy white dress."Too bad," he mumbles. - dryad roadtrip au
A Proposal by Any Other Name - E - 188k - Rey and Finn have been A Thing for a long time now. Since she was eighteen, to be exact. When Finn leaves on a trip to Europe for six months for work, Rey finally chases after him to Dublin to do what he seems to be putting off: propose. She wants a family, after all.The universe has different ideas. Her flights are delayed, storms hit, she loses her tickets and everything seems to be going horribly. To top it off, she ends up stranded around a rather irritating man by the name of Kylo Ren. It goes about as well as you'd expect. - leap year au
endless summer afternoon - E - 63k - “My son's room is always made up,” Han had said, hitting a light switch as Rey clung to a dirty backpack in the dark hallway, “he never comes home. Warm bed might as well get some use.”Rey spared Han some of the dignity of his own longing assessment of the space that clearly hadn’t been looked at in a long time. An empty room in a quiet house. As gruff as he was, handing it off to some runaway nobody just because she was helping him rebuild a car was one of the kindest gestures she’d ever experienced, and had a hidden weight that she knew needed a respectful amount of privacy. Mysteries were often about unresolved sadness, and were usually only solved by the people who didn’t feel it.Rey is offered a place to stay: a spare bedroom once belonging to the mysterious Ben Solo. What does she do when she wakes up with him wanting his bed back? - roommates au
Dandelion - E - 45k - Rey's an ex con and orphan, just released from jail after killing Plutt. She follows advice from her former guardian, Maz, and finds a job at Luke's coffee shop. Ben's a lawyer who lost his job and moved back to his hometown. He falls for Rey, unaware of her dark past. - coffee shop au
A Few Small Repairs - E - 69k - Ben Solo is a ruthless property developer, and Rey Johnson is the lone holdout on the block. She does not intend to give up what's hers, not for anything. (Not even for a pair of pretty eyes.) - property developer au
Unbroken - E - 7k - He found her sleeping in the stables, curled up in the stall of his newest, unbroken colt...
Lockjaw - M - 106k - Kylo finds Rey unconscious and near death on the side of a road, surrounded by twitching, wretched things looking to her for their next meal. Ever the altruist, he picks them off and takes her with him, saving her life in the process. It's no wonder that when she wakes she feels she owes him, and agrees to become his travel companion as he crosses the United States in search of safety and a new home. - zombie apoclypse au
Everything to Prove - M - 13k - “The show,” he says. “It’s probably best if they don’t—if we don’t—”And Rey follows his line of thought at once. For all the program is one that doesn’t seem melodramatic—the height of drama in previous seasons came from someone’s cake falling over and that was about it—she does not doubt that the producers and cameramen would leap at the opportunity to make there be something out of nothing in their relationship—especially if there was something out of something.“Yeah,” she agrees. “Yeah, probably. We can pick baking stations that are…” but she doesn’t want to complete the thought. She likes baking next to Ben.“Or we can just be careful?” he suggests, sounding quite as pained by the prospect as Rey feels.“Yeah, careful. I can do careful,” Rey says at once and her lips are on his again and he’s laughing now, and she’s laughing, and she didn’t think laughter would be part of all this. She didn’t think it could be. But here she is, laughing and kissing and holding a man who, at some point, she’s going to want to beat. She does her best not to think of that now. It’s a friendly competition, after all. It’s not life and death. It’s baking. - great british bake off au
*In Bloom - E - 13k - The flowers that bedeck her skin don’t lie—ballet dancer Rey is in love with her partner, Ben. But the years go by and his skin stays resolutely, devastatingly blank. He doesn’t love her. But when his hands are on her body, she can pretend. - ballet soulmates au
By Blood and Flame - E - 10k - Rey can’t go to her professors with this spell. She needs help, though, needs someone to do the spell with her, and she needs the best because it’s tricky. Dangerous. There’s a boy on campus. Powerful. Mysterious. He’s admired and envied, feared and loathed, depending on who’s talking, but for all everyone knows his story, no one seems to really know him. And Rey… Rey has been curious about him for… well, for longer than she wants to admit. She’s not sure if it’s good or bad luck that he’s the perfect person to help cast her spell. - magic college au
count the rings - E - 63k - “Because you’re sitting there all comfy, not looking at all bridal-” “I’ll just fetch the veil out of my backpack, shall I?” “-when you could be, you know, making a move on that fine-ass tree.” In which camping comes with unexpected consequences. - accidental marriage au
(won’t you let me) walk you home from school - E - 129k - Ben, a counselor in the upper school at the legendary Alliance Academy, keeps finding himself interacting with the lower school art teacher, Rey. He definitely doesn’t like it. - teacher au
follow in your form - E - 23k - Ben Solo wakes up paralyzed and angry about it.A story about dealing with change, holding onto hope, and finding love. - quadriplegic ben au
*screwdriver - M -101k - Rey is a bright-eyed intern on her first campaign trail, Ben is an irritated data analyst, and how difficult can it be to get a legacy senator elected president? Apparently fucking impossible. - political au
9 pints - E - 83k - She knew next to nothing, and Google was largely unhelpful. All of her searches (“vampire sex rules” and “vampire dos and don’ts” and one very self-indulgent “average vampire cock size big?”) linked her to dated top ten lists written by anyone other than an actual vampire.Twenty minutes of frustrated scrolling eventually led her to a supernatural dating forum. The website was horribly aged, but still active. Questions were tagged, which meant that it was easy to narrow down her search. Vampire, she clicked, and Sex.--In which Rey gets suckered into shooting porn with one of Poe's pickiest vampire actors. - magical porn stars au
fine young cannibals - E - 27k - Kylo raised his head to the sky as he inhaled, his broad chest expanding even wider. His eyes fluttered shut, savoring the scent like a sumptuous meal. He grinned.“Oh,” he murmured, so softly Rey wasn’t even sure it was meant for her ears. His eyes slid to meet hers, scarlet and violent and hungry. “You brought a snack.”And then all hell broke loose.About three things, Rey is absolutely positive:First, she is totally, completely, and madly in love with her vampire boyfriend, Poe.Second, there is another vampire—an older, evil, definitely-not-hot vampire—that thirsts for her blood and wants nothing more than to kill her.And third, she is maybe not absolutely positive about either of these things. - twilight au
Epithumia - E - 46k- ἐπιθυμία, ας, : epithumia : desire, passionate longing, lust *** “No extra credit.” He made a noise that might have been a laugh. “You ask that every time.” “Well, I have to try.” Rey said, weakly. “Can you make an exception?” A lone eyebrow ascended his lofty forehead into his hairline. “Try harder, Miss Kenobi.” - college teacher/student au
Historical AUs (ranging from medieval to the early 2000s)
light carries on endlessly - M - 6k - “Traitor,” he told Cerberus gruffly not too much later, using both hands to scratch behind the hound’s many ears. What appeared to be a rat tail lay nearby on a blood-stained bit of stone. “What did I tell you about women with pretty eyes?”One wet tongue lapped at his wrist, and he sighed. “Right. Nothing.” - Hades and Persephone au
The Witch in the Wood - E - 138k - As a knight errant of the kingdom of Alderaan, Kylo Ren has traveled the country, completing quest after perilous quest in search of redemption for the dark deeds of his past. When an evil witch captures the princess of a neighboring kingdom, Kylo reluctantly accepts the burden of rescue with the assumption that it will be a simple task.It is not. For the creature that lives in the woods is not a monster at all.Since her mentor died, Rey has lived in the witch’s tree and uses magic to maintain the balance of the forest. London | Finn Shelby
Hey! Can you please write an imagine about Finn Shelby and reader in their wedding day? Thanks a lot!
London | Finn Shelby
You were buzzing. Certain someone would see you and recognise the both of you before the train made it out of Birmingham. Small Heath, while densely populated, wasn’t nearly crowded enough that anyone there should not know a Shelby on sight. And one of them was sitting beside you, with your hand clasped in his and resting in his lap. Your knee bobbed up and down as the familiar sounds of the train starting up signaled the beginning of your ride to London. There was still snow on the ground from last night’s sudden storm and at this hour you’d really expected to be sleeping off a hangover from partying but instead you were wide awake, the license in your companion’s pocket weighing heavy on the back of your mind.
It didn’t seem to trouble him though, Finn had fallen back to sleep almost instantly after you’d boarded the train. He was as relaxed as you wished you were but the mix of eagerness and anxiety had you alert.
Last night had been the New Years Eve party at the Garrison and Finn had asked you to go with him. You had been seeing Finn for a while now, nearly a year and a half, but this was the first time he suggested bringing you around his family.
“That went brilliantly! Just like I told ya didn’t I?” Finn had exclaimed as you both walked back to his place after the evening. It had begun to snow even before you left the Garrison but Finn had assured his Aunt Polly that you would both be fine getting home.
“You keep ‘er warm now ya hear?” John had shouted after you, mocking Polly for being so concerned for her youngest nephew.
Once you were both back at Finn’s house, laying down in bed together with the blankets pulled up like a fort over your heads, Finn made his proposal. Untraditional but no less serious. “Let’s get married.”
“What?”
“Let’s get married. Tomorrow, when we wake up, let’s catch the train to London. We can get married there at the courts.”
“We need a license for that sort of thing Finn.”
“So we’ll do it then?”
“What?” You laughed.
Finn, from your very first encounter with him, did not seem to have such an interest in fooling around. Not like Arthur had or Tommy or even John who loved his wife but seemed to have an ever wandering eye. Finn had been serious about your relationship, committed and faithful for a year and a half. And as that time progressed and things between the two of you became more serious the idea of marriage seemed, to him, like the logical next step.
Though he was disinterested in the mess of weddings and tradition. He wanted nothing fancy like Tommy and certainly nothing with the whole family like John. You and he at the courts would do just fine.
Your own ideas on marriage had never been very well thought out. Someday you would marry, as was expected. You would settle down with some bloke in Small Heath who had a decent job and you’d have a few kids and then they’d grow up, get married, and have kids. That was bound to happen though you had never considered it happening with a Shelby.
Finn, you had always assumed, would eventually get bored and his eye would wander just like his brothers’ and you could always think of the days when you were young and dated a Shelby but that was all. A marriage proposal, no matter how serious things seemed to be getting, felt unreal.
“Well, you’ve not said no. So it’s a yes then?” He asked, shifting slightly so he could prop himself on his elbow.
“Yes.” You replied, no hesitation in your voice. “But wouldn’t you like to wait?”
“Would you? Honestly, I mean, would you prefer the wedding?” He asked.
You didn’t prefer the wedding and Finn didn’t prefer to wait so, with little sleep you both awoke early in the morning and went straight to the notary office to apply for a license. Finn was in his normal state of dress and you were in the party dress you’d worn the night before, a coat tied securely around your body to keep out the cold.
“Get some sleep.”
You looked away from the window and the rushing countryside to Finn, who was looking at you with the same sleepy eyes as he had the night prior, though they were considerably less bloodshot.
“I can’t sleep...I’m too excited. I don’t know how you’re so relaxed.”
“Hmmm.” Finn hummed almost thoughtfully before leaning over to kiss your forehead, “easiest thing I’ve ever done, marrying you. Don’t see what there is to be jumpy about.”
“I’m not jumpy, I’m excited. It’s different.” You replied, “you aren’t Tommy, you don’t have to be so stoic.”
“I’m not, I’m just tired. You kept me up last night.” Finn joked, winking at you rather obviously.
When the train pulled into the station in London you and Finn were among the first off. He carried a small suitcase with him, the only luggage the two of you had packed in your hast to leave Small Heath. You had insisted in the morning, as Finn woke you early and told you to get dressed, that it would be just as legal to get married at the courts in Birmingham. He was adamant that travelling to London was the only option.
“We can spend a couple days, like a honeymoon.”
Finn kept hold of your hand as he led you through the streets of London to the courts. It was New Years Day and people were milling about, visiting houses and seeing the sights of the city. You couldn’t deny that you were distracted once or twice on the way to your destination, trying to drink in the city. It was your first time to London. Usually you only visited the city through stories Finn told you about his trips there with his brothers but to actually be there felt thrilling. And to think it was your wedding day as well.
“Mum is going to have my head when we get back to Small Heath,” you giggled, passing Finn as he held the door of the courts open for you.
“Nothing she can do about it. You’re a married woman, or you will be,” he replied. “Not to mention a Shelby.”
“Birmingham royalty I’m marrying into.” You teased.
The wedding included you, Finn, the secretary at the desk, and the courts official. The secretary had commented that you both seemed a bit young and asked if you’d had any to drink the night prior. Finn had assured her that you were both sober though had been blissfully drunk when he proposed. You’d laughed at that and nodded your head to confirm his story.
All thoughts of your mum and Aunt Polly were gone as you stood beside him in the small office, giddier than you were on the train this morning. Finn kept stealing glances at you, a smile on his face the whole time, making him look even more boyish than usual.
“You’ll sign here.” The clerk announced when the short ceremony was finished, guiding the both of you to his desk where the marriage certificate was. “Full names, married.” He instructed.
“You first Mrs. Shelby.” Finn teased, nudging your side.
I don’t know about this.

nobody gets out without scrapes & scars || self para
why don't you say it like it's real instead of i don't think about you ever since you've been gone & yeah it's cool you threw all of my records out on the lawn 'cause i don't miss you when the radio plays our song 'cause love don't really hurt said no one ever TAGGING: Erika & her ex; who i have named Finn; with mentions of Willa & Jake LOCATION: Finn’s Apartment in Michigan. TIME FRAME: Jan 12, late morning. TL:DR: Erika goes to her ex’s house and gets him to sign papers to let Jake adopt Willa.
Erika had this day played ever since she fell in love with Jake, that she would be able to convince Finn, who already had no rights to their daughter, to sign over the last bits of rights over so eventually one day Jake could adopt Willa. And this weekend was hopefully the only trip that Erika would have to make out here to get Finn to agree to it.
She didn’t want to bring Willa with her when she went to see Finn, so she left her with her parents & Jake at the house, get in all the grandma and poppy time that she could anyways. The hard part wasn’t going to be seeing Finn. Did she still love him? Yes it was her first love, and the father of her child, she would always love him. but she hadn’t been in love with him for seven plus years.
Getting outside his apartment was the easy part, and him knowing Erika was coming did make it a lot more easier. Pulling the sleeves of her winter jacket over her hands and let out a sigh grabbing the keys and heading to the door. She got herself buzzed in and made her way up the apartment stair case.
It wasn’t that this apartment building was bad, Erika had totally seen worse, but she was still glad to left Willa behind. Getting to Finn’s door, Erika knocked a few times before pushing her hands into her pockets and waiting, rocking back and forth on the heals of her shoes.
Finn opened the door seeing her, “Hey Erika.” a smile crossed the mans face seeing her. “Come in, can I take your jacket for you?” He asked once Erika was inside
“Hi Finn.” She said simply stepping inside. His apartment was like him. everything in a place, and nothing out of place. “I’m fine.” She nodded letting him lead her inside. “So i know I probably should have had Willa with me, but she hasn’t seen my parents since last time I was in town and that’s been a while. I didn’t want to pull her from them.” She said softly.
“Oh no no, thats fine Erika. I get it.” He nodded. “I see her enough from what you post on instagram anyways.” Finn pushed his hand though his hair, “It would have bee nice to see her though. Maybe next time though right?”
Erika nodded. “We are here till tomorrow night, or afternoon. She does still have school.” She reminded him. “But while we’re on that subject.” She paused and pulling out papers from her bag. “So if you see Willa on instagram, there’s a good chance you saw Jake and I are engaged too then. And..” She sighed handing him the some what thick stack of papers. “Seeing as the custody is having me have legal and physical, and it’s not like what is going on with us is really going to change. but.” Erika pushed her hands into her back pockets. “Those are papers, or at least information, for you to read, and I would really hope that you would do what is best for her, and let Jake adopt her when we’re married.” Erika hadn’t made eye contact with him until then. “You don’t have to give me an answer right now, but it would be nice to know before we go back to LA tomorrow.”
Finn listened, already skimming the papers, “Does she love him?” He asked looking over at her. “Is he good to her?”
Erika nodded “She loves him so much, Finn. And he’s so good with her, like any time they’re doing something and i walk in I just want to cry cause he treats her like she was his already.” She rolled her lips between her teeth.
“Okay. I’ll sign them.” he said simply.
“Oh? okay. I wasn’t expecting that quickly” Erika perked up a little. “We just need a notary and a think two witnesses and we can get that done today.”
Finn nodded. “Well, whats stopping us?” he asked grabbing his jacket and keys.
“Clearly nothing.” She let out a soft laugh
The two agreed to where to go to get the notary, meeting there. and both texted one of their parents each so they’d each have a witness that was on their side. It was a pretty pain free and it was one less thing Erika now needed to worry about before the wedding.

Day 119 - 14/01/2021
A typical day
When someone asks me “what do you work” I somehow always feel like I need to say “I don’t work right now”. I guess I feel like that’s the correct response because I am not hired by anyone and I don’t have work that pays. But to say that “I don’t work” or “I don’t have a job” right now couldn’t be further from the truth... And today was one of those days again where it became very clear to me that I do indeed *work*. I sat in front of the computer all day and took care of various things... so probably more for my reference rather than anybody else’s I thought I’ll share what a rather typical day of work looks like for me right now.
6.30 Cat woke me up 7.30 Slowly started to get ready to get up 7.50 Made coffee 8.00 My Mum texted me that a colleague of her husband died of COVID the night before. So I spoke to her for a while. 8.30 Checked my emails and was happy to see that I had received a response from the Finnish tax authorities. I had contacted them a few days earlier in regards to the sale of my apartment in Helsinki last year because I figured I still need to pay taxes for that. But since I don’t have a Finnish bank account anymore, I can not access the online tax service anymore and so I needed to email them... Luckily Finns are awesome and they responded really quickly and sent me instructions what to do. 8.40 I downloaded the form they told me to fill and started working on it. It required me to dig up all sorts of bank statements and other papers from way back in 2018… In the end I wasn’t sure how to correctly fill the form so I only did it half way through and then sent it via email to a friend in Finland asking for help. 8.50 texted my friend who is ill from COVID if I should bring her some soup
8.55 texted Erick to tell him I needed to talk to him and asked if he could come by my house today (will explain later)
9.00 received a revised version of the “tiny houses” from the architect of the construction company in Sayulita - revised it but didn’t like it so I started drafting a response to him giving him honest feedback
The first image is their initial proposal and the second image the revised option.
9.30 Texted my architect friend to see when he has time to talk to me as we agreed to speak this morning
10.00 Received a text from my friend asking when I’m gonna be at the house today. She wanted to buy some of the old furniture I found in the house. I told her that I revised the furniture yesterday and that I’m not planning on selling any at this point cause I might need them myself in the future
10:15 got a voice message from my architect friend asking for some clarification - some back and forth and eventually spoke on the phone briefly. I was happy to hear that he thought I was making some wise decisions with the latest layout but that he suggests I forget about the idea of a second floor because the cost are not in relation to the benefit I get from it. He also said by not building a second floor I only need to get a “renovation permit” and not a “construction” permit and that that is much easier to get. It actually made a lot of sense to me and we agreed to trash the idea.
10.45 briefly revised the sketches I made and sent them to my friend
11.00 Made breakfast
11.30 Erick came by my house and we spoke for around 30min - I spoke to him about a job offer. I told him that I’m looking for a “right hand” and that I can not offer him a grand salary right now but that I’m willing to offer him a “future” to grow with me and my business. He seemed exited.
12:14 Sent a text to my notary asking what’s up with the RNIE fine I’m supposed to pay and if there’s anything I can do to fight their decision
12:15 Sent feedback to the architect whose design I didn’t like
12:16 Sent a message to my friend Santana asking for recommendation for anti-termite treatment for the old furniture I’m planning to refurbish
12:30 my notary responded saying that she’s out of office for health reasons but that her colleague is taking care of the RNIE situation and that she’ll inform me when she knows more
12.50 Sent the same feedback to the architects boss telling him that we’re not gonna end up working together on this project at least not for now
13.30 Had a really great Zoom call with a good old friend of mine from Germany.
14.45 saw a post on Facebook by someone in the local group that property taxes (predial) are due to being paid and realised that that’s probably something I need to pay as well. So I started researching (aka googling) a bit and then thought about who might know about this that I could could... 15.10 texted my friend Carlos who is Mexican and has also purchased some property in town and asked him about the predial - he checked with his mum and told me about the place I need to go pay 15:30 decided to still text my contact Chava and see if he knows if 2020 is paid already, he said 2020 is paid but I need to pay for 2021 and I need to do it now in January to get a discount 15.45 went back to the Facebook post since someone had mentioned they paid it online. Found the link and investigated. It indeed seemed like one can pay online and gets a discount so I tried to just pay it right away instead of going to their office in Bucerias - however after 2 failed attempts I gave up. The payment was rejected.
16:20 received a message from my accountant telling me that they finally arranged a meeting for me with SAT (tax office) - unfortunately the appointment they scheduled is in Tepic which is 2h away from where I live and I had asked them to book it in the town that is only 1h away from me. Also the date they booked does not work for me as it’s the day the construction of the roof starts and I need to be at the house that day.
16:30 Texted my bank lady asking why I can’t pay online with the company credit card 16:45 She replied that she first needs to unlock my cc so I can make payments online and asked me to send her the cc number which I did right away 17.00 Realized that I was starving and decided to driver over to San Pancho to buy dinner and bring some soup to my friend. 17.30 Received a message from my bank lady that as of tomorrow I can use my credit card to make online purchases 17.40 Received a message from my accountant asking if she can call me. I asked her to call me tomorrow
19.00 Got back home, made some tea and started watching Netflix 22.30 Started writing this blog post

The bottom line: Kong rules again.
Mix King Kong with The Lost World, spike it with a bracing dash of Apocalypse Now and you've got Kong: Skull Island, in which Warner Bros. finally gets the effects-driven fantasy adventure formula right again after numerous misfires. This highly entertaining return of one of the cinema's most enduring giant beasts moves like crazy — the film feels more like 90 minutes than two hours — and achieves an ideal balance between wild action, throwaway humor, genre refreshment and, perhaps most impressively, a nonchalant awareness of its own modest importance in the bigger scheme of things; unlike most modern franchise blockbusters, it doesn't try to pummel you into submission.
Leagues better than Peter Jackson's bloated, three-hour Kong of 2005, this one looks poised for strong returns and potential sequels co-starring hinted-at monsters from movie lore.
It may have seemed like a stretch to entrust this giant project to a director whose career hitherto consisted of one small, kid-centric Sundance film, the 2013 The Kings of Summer. But it was Jordan Vogt-Roberts who had the crucial inspiration to set this Kong redo in 1973, specifically at the moment the United States pulled out of Vietnam, a decision that nourishes nearly every aspect of the film. Certainly the specter of Col. Kurtz looms over the perilous journey undertaken by this tale's small band of mostly military explorers into unknown tropical territory, but what awaits them is a whole lot bigger and scarier than Marlon Brando.
Smartly operating under the theory that exposition in this sort of thing should quickly be dispatched in order to get to the good stuff, the director, screenwriters Dan Gilroy, Max Borenstein and Derek Connolly and story creator John Gatins have made Skull Island and its environs into a storm-enshrouded location in the Pacific Ocean that has never been charted or found. As the war ends, old-time secret op Bill Randa (John Goodman) convinces the Nixon Administration to back a small expedition to try to find and map the place “where God didn't finish the creation, a place where myth and science meet,” as Randa alluringly puts it. Goodman gets several of the writers' best lines, including one designed to reference Vietnam but that will register with modern viewers: “Mark my word, there'll never be a more screwed up time in Washington.”
A crew is ferried by about a dozen choppers that penetrate the dense fog and rain to find what Skull Island has to offer. Among the key members are Samuel Jackson's bitter Lt. Colonel Packard, who's pissed that the U.S. didn't finish the job in Nam and brings with him his team of “Sky Devils” with quick trigger fingers; Tim Hiddleston's Capt. Conrad, a sleek SAS black ops vet now at loose ends; Brie Larson as combat photographer Mason Weaver; and Corey Hawkins as a bookish biologist, all of whom have their own agendas to pursue in a land unknown to man.
Unknown, that is, except to one man, Hank Marlow (John C. Reilly), a pilot who crashed there during World War II and has lived peaceably among a few silent natives ever since. Looking like an old hippie with his tattered uniform and untended beard, Marlow has somehow survived through the years with his humor and good will intact, and Reilly's warmly funny performance becomes the heart of the film; he could have been just comic relief in an old coot Walter Brennan-style turn but, in stressing the character's generous acceptance of his strange fate, the actor makes the man embraceably multidimensional and accessible (one of the Chicagoan's first questions of his visitors, along with who won World War II, is whether the Cubs have won anything yet).
In the end, though, it's not the characters the audiences will have come to see, but the monsters, and the film doesn't stint in supplying them. This Kong, who makes his entrance a well-timed half hour in, is far bigger than any before him, about 100 feet tall. Still, he faces fierce competition on the island from, among others, some toothsome lizards who happily take advantage of the change in diet offered by the new human visitors.
As before, Kong himself is portrayed as fearsome but also observant and sensitive. The tragic element to his character is carried over from previous incarnations; he's the last of his species, and the bones of his family are strewn about the ground. Unfortunately, he's got a new enemy in Packard, who is determined to settle his unfinished business in Nam by taking out Kong, as if that would somehow right the balance.
Its numbers steadily decreasing as it goes, the expedition struggles against rugged terrain and a nasty environment to make it to the far side of the island, where they're due to be picked up in three days. Mason snaps away at all the freakish wonders to provide photographic evidence, while Capt. Conrad, the nominal handsome male lead, really doesn't engage in many heroics, perhaps the better to allow Hiddleston's neatly styled hair to remain perfectly in place throughout. And despite his helping Mason out of a jam or two, the expected romantic sparks remain unlit, which may be a sign not only of the times, but of the director's relentless determination to avoid cliches and eliminate the “boring parts,” as kids used to call the inevitably bland love scenes in such films.
Instead, there is considerable emotional investment to be made in Reilly's character, who is no doubt not named Marlow for nothing. Despite his decades of deprivation, he's the best-adjusted character on hand, his relaxed acceptance of his odd destiny becoming palpably moving at times, a reaction never sought or expected in this sort of film. At least as far as the humans are concerned, Reilly steals the film.
That said, Vogt-Roberts and his collaborators make sure to take care of business where it really counts, which is in the invention and excitement of the monster scenes. Fully realistic creatures are now nothing new, but the filmmakers, notably led by visual effects supervisors Stephen Rosenbaum and Jeff White, have engineered scenes of bestial combat that are not only hyper-credible but shot through with unexpected, and often gruesomely funny, moves. The digital zoo is colorful indeed, from a towering spider to a giant water buffalo and an all-embracing octopus, making it clear that Kong has his hands full of worthy opponents on a regular basis. It's no wonder the old guy seems world-weary.
All the requisite elements are served up here in ideal proportion, and the time just flies by, which can rarely be said for films of this nature, which, in a trend arguably started by Peter Jackson, have for years now tended to be heavy, lumbering and overlong. A post-end credits bit suggests that Warner Bros. already has some famous opponents lined up for Kong's heavyweight belt, beginning perhaps with Rodan. Whoever undertakes any follow-ups will have a high bar to clear.

HF96 – Makes it harder to opt-out of vaccinations
Minnesota currently has pockets of low immunization rates in schools--these low rates could spark disease outbreaks and threaten the most vulnerable children in our schools. HF96 replaces the easy-to-obtain notary signature with a doctor's signature. This "informed refusal" bill requires parents have a conversation with a doctor about the risks of refusing vaccines before opting out of school entry vaccine requirements.
