Danny Nightingale looked flustered, nervous, and far too pretty with his cheeks flushing red under the glow of the nearby lamp fixtures. Tim wondered when his brain would finally come back online. Right now it was far too interested in putting everything else on the backburner.

On one hand, he had been trying to get information out of Danny on his connection to Vlad Masters- a connection that had seemed more tenuous with each passing minute of the evening. On the other, Tim could admit it had sounded a bit like he was inviting Danny for something more.

And if he was honest with himself, it was only mostly unintentional.

"It's not even you, I just get attached really easily and don't want something casual. Sorry."

Tim hadn't even realized boundary setting could be so attractive.

Middlemen without enshittification

Enshittification describes how platforms go bad, which is also how the internet goes bad, because the internet is made of platforms, which is weird, because platforms are intermediaries and we were promised that the internet would disintermediate the world:

The internet did disintermediate a hell of a lot of intermediaries – that is, "middlemen" – but then it created a bunch more of these middlemen, who coalesced into a handful of gatekeepers, or as the EU calls them "VLOPs" (Very Large Online Platforms, the most EU acronym ever).

Which raises two questions: first, why did so many of us end up flocking to these intermediaries' sites, and how did those sites end up with so much power?

To answer the first question, I want you to consider one of my favorite authors: Crad Kilodney (RIP):

When I was growing up, Crad was a fixture on the streets of Toronto. All through the day and late into the evening, winter or summer, Crad would stand on the street with a sign around his neck ("Very famous Canadian author, buy my books, $2" or sometimes just "Margaret Atwood, buy my books, $2"). He wrote these deeply weird, often very funny short stories, which he edited, typeset, printed, bound and sold himself, one at a time, to people who approached him on the street.

I had a lot of conversations with Crad – as an aspiring writer, I was endlessly fascinated by him and his books. He was funny, acerbic – and sneaky. Crad wore a wire: he kept a hidden tape recorder rolling in his coat and he secretly recorded conversations with people like me, and then released a series of home-duplicated tapes of the weirdest and funniest ones:

I love Crad. He deserves more recognition. There's an on-again/off-again documentary about his life and work that I hope gets made some day:

But – and this is the crucial part – there are writers out there I want to hear from who couldn't do what Crad did. Maybe they can write books, but not edit them. Or edit them, but not typeset them. Or typeset, but not print. Or print, but not spend the rest of their lives standing on a street-corner with a "PUTRID SCUM" sign around their neck.

Which is fine. That's why we have intermediaries. I like booksellers (I was one!). I like publishers. I like distributors. I like their salesforce, who go forth and convince the booksellers of the world to stock books like mine. I have ten million things I want to do before I die, and I'm already 52, and being a sales-rep for a publisher isn't on my bucket list. I am so thankful that someone else wants to do this for me.

That's why we have intermediaries, and why disintermediation always leads to some degree of re-intermediation. There's a lot of explicit and implicit knowledge and specialized skill required to connect buyers and sellers, creators and audiences, and other sides of two-sided markets. Some producers can do some of this stuff for themselves, and a very few – like Crad – can do it all, but most of us need some help, somewhere along the way. In the excellent 2022 book Direct, Kathryn Judge lays out a clear case for all the good that middlemen can do:

So why were we all so anxious for disintermediation back in the late 1990s? Here's a hint: it wasn't because we hated intermediaries – it was because we hated powerful intermediaries.

The point of an intermediary is to serve as a conduit between producers and consumers, buyers and sellers, audiences and creators. When an intermediary gains power over the audience – say, by locking them inside a walled garden – and then uses that lock-in to screw producers and appropriate an ever larger share of the value going between them, that's when intermediaries become a problem.

The problem isn't that someone will handle ticketing for your gig. The problem is that Ticketmaster has locked down all the ticketing, and the venues, and the promotions, and it uses that power to gouge fans and rip off artists:

The problem isn't that there's a well-made website that lets you shop for goods sold by many small merchants and producers. It's that Amazon has cornered this market, takes $0.51 out of every dollar you spend there, and clones and destroys any small merchant who succeeds on the platform:

The problem isn't that there's a website where you can stream most of the music ever recorded. It's that Spotify colludes with the Big Three labels to rip off artists and sneaks crap you don't want to hear into your stream in order to collect payola:

The problem isn't that there's a website where you can buy any audiobook you want. It's that Amazon's Audible locks every book to its platform forever and steals hundreds of millions of dollars from creators:

The problem, in other words, isn't intermediation – it's power. The thing that distinguishes a useful intermediary from an enshittified bully is power. Intermediaries gain power when our governments stop enforcing competition law. This lets intermediaries buy each other up and corner markets. Once they've formed cozy cartels, they can capture their regulators and commit rampant labor, privacy and consumer violations with impunity. That capture also lets them harness governments to punish smaller players that want to free workers, creators, audiences and customers from walled gardens. It also hands them a whip-hand over their workers, so that any worker who refuses to aid in these nefarious plans can be easily fired:

A world with intermediaries is a better world. As much as I love Crad Kilodney's books, I wouldn't want to live in a world where the only books on my shelves came from people prepared to stand on a street-corner wearing a "FOUL PUS FROM DEAD DOGS" sign.

The problem isn't intermediaries – it's powerful intermediaries. That's why the world's surging antitrust movement is so exciting: by reinstating competition law, we can keep intermediaries small and comparatively weak, so that creators and audiences, drivers and riders, sellers and buyers, and other groups seeking to connect will not find themselves made subservient to middlemen.

((Mostly for Vox, buuuuuut some for Velvette too.

Chronologically and physically the youngest of the Vees. Though physically not by much, she's still within the 30's-40's age range like they are

Velvette

Was unsurprisingly a fashion influencer in life. However she unfortunately started out as one of those child influencers her parents vicariously live through/make money off of.

Eventually killed her parents to finally escape them. To this day no one in the living realm caught on that she murdered them.

Died about 2015 when an obsessive fan sent her a trap package in retaliation for getting a boyfriend. Yes, really.

Gained a big following rather quickly on Hell's social media, catching Vox's attention.

After Vox pulled her into the Vees, she's the one that brought eyes to the boys' bigger projects, and often does photography and costuming for them.

Aside from the obvious knives, Velvette also wields a selfie stick. And man can she do damage with it.

Velvette cooks as a hobby, primarily baking. Sometimes posts food aesthetic pictures. The only people she cooks for are those she's fond of. Sort of a love language for her. She stopped cooking for Valentino, however, after an incident where online he insulted the cookies she made for him. Now he can only get a taste of her food by either persuading Vox to share, or otherwise stealing the food off him. Girl holds grudges.

Vox

Chronologically the oldest of the Vees, though physically a little older than Velvette and a little younger than Valentino.

Born and raised Catholic, though admittedly didn't have the attention span for Sunday School. He was essentially agnostic until he died.

Grew up reading comics, watching TV, and in general fucking around with any electronics in the house he could find rather than playing outside. He was neglected by his parents growing up and didn't really have any friends so yeah.

Always wanted to be in the film industry. He wanted to act in and make films. Unfortunately he only got as far as commercials and infomercials before he died. He was a pretty good salesman, though, so it suited him just fine. He got progressively more and more unethical in trying to sell the products and services he was advertising. Shaped up to be a real corporate shill.

Also. Drugs. So much drugs. He's just better at hiding this habit than most people.

Died in a studio accident where a light fixture fell on his head. Yes. Really.

Goes without saying Vox isn't his real name. But it wasn't his first Hell alias either.

Not only did he start out with the old boxy tv for a head, but he couldn't communicate vocally at first. You know silent films where after the talent "says" their lines, it cuts to a frame where we have to read the dialogue? Yeah he started out having to do that.

Now more machine than man, he works differently from other sinners. Rather than respawning when he dies, he needs to be repaired to come back. Even when he's been torn to pieces, all you can do is gather him up and put him back together. The only thing setting him apart from broken machines is that he does bleed when he's been hurt.

Aside from the ability to bleed, there are other occasions where his machine body functions like it's organic. Like if he's injecting something, he can treat his wires like veins.

Theoretically, he doesn't need to eat, but he does get hunger pangs if he doesn't, and eating does provide more power for his batteries.

I could go on and on about his anatomy and his relationship with it tbh but for now the most important one; he has a tail. Very Hellborn like but a cord with a plug at the end. It's how he charges, or stays powered on when he doesn't have battery. He just hides it under his clothes and wound around his waist [like a Saiyan] because he's gotten tired of some assholes tearing it off or fucking up the prongs. Why did I give him a tail? Because I saw someone edit him with one and now I want it to be canon fite me.

Made his start in Hell as an inventor and repairman. That's when he first met Alastor. Just dumped some broken equipment on him asking him to fix it. One time became semi regularly. After a little bit of that, Vox was taken under his wing.

Yes, thanks to Alastor, he has eaten "human" flesh. [Only in quotes cuz technically no one in Hell is human anymore.] He doesn't exactly hate it, like he wouldn't refuse it if it was cooked for him, but he doesn't seek it out either.

Alastor's cooking is also the reason why his white ass can handle spicy food-

Vox looked up to Alastor back then. The relationship was far from healthy, however.

By the time they split, Vox was an Overlord in his own right

Met Valentino a few years after the split. This relationship is also unhealthy but good luck getting Vox to realize that.

Essentially provides the platforms for the other Vees, and often time helps with video editing and sometimes get involved directly with the filming. Val learned all his film tricks from Vox.

Custom made the Vees' phones and set up Valentino's online accounts. With some bombass security.

As an old with a ton of life experience (not all of it good), it’s pretty common for people who’ve come out of a ltr to move more quickly with the next one. You’re older, you’re more secure in yourself, you know what you like. That’s not to say that csw will become a long term fixture in Joe’s life, but I wouldn’t judge them on the supposed speed of the relationship. (I don’t see it as that fast anyway, tbh? They’ve been on a few dates over a couple of months. It’s not like she’s moved in.)

Another thing: why are you all assuming Joe was the one responsible for not taking the big step with M? She mightn’t have wanted to. I know multiple guys - yes, multiple - who’ve proposed and been turned down. Much of the time it was more of a “not yet” and the relationship continued. Some of them even worked out in the end! One of my friends brought up marriage three times before his boyfriend agreed! They’ve been married for 15 years now ❤️.

Lastly, I’ll confess to being one of those people who get defensive of Steve, and it does low key translate to having mixed feelings about Eddie. How this came about for me mightn’t be the same for others, but it went like this: I loved Eddie in the show and was so sad when he died. But some elements of his fandom ruined things a bit by insisting he was the best part of S4 (I disagree), and that Steve should have died instead. I saw that a LOT, usually accompanied by a rant about Steve having served his purpose and that his death made more narrative sense. That made my affection for Eddie diminish considerably! I still like him, but nowhere near as much as I did on first watching the show.

Everyone can have their own opinions, of course, but equally, people can’t help their own emotional responses to those opinions. I don’t like feeling this way about Eddie, believe me! But it is what it is.

Thank you for making it so clear and easy to understand. as for the first part, I see what you’re saying I think it’s more or less the fact that she did just get out of relationship like two months ago. And I personally don’t think that this is a rebound for him (after M). I think that this is a rebound for CSW. I see what you’re saying, though about people moving onto one relationship to the next because of them being older, and knowing what they want, but this just feels like something that she tends to do very often. Which makes me believe she doesn’t know what she wants. Which again is fine I mean I dated around a lot in my early to mid 20s because I was still figuring out what exactly I want out of a relationship. But I see where you’re coming from, and we all can have different opinions on it. Relationships are individualized, and sometimes I do get the read wrong. I’ll admit that, but this one just seems like there is an expiration date. Again this is not me being jealous, it’s just what I see.

We don’t know about him and m and Who wanted to take the next step, I think you’re absolutely right on that. We will never know. We will also never know if that was even something that they thought about together.

and for the Eddie stuff, I totally get what you’re saying. After the end of season four online was a little bit of a mess. I personally am not involved in the Jq/Eddie fandom anymore because it was way too toxic. And it honestly made me like Jq and Eddie a little bit less . So I totally get what you’re saying about that.

I really didn't know why they accepted my application, but I wasn't going to shoot myself in the food. The job paid well, had excellent benefits, and provided food, so I went for it. The interview process was a bunch of yes and no questions. They said I could do anything in between the calls; write, read, draw.... just be sure to answer the phone.

I spent the first weeks fixing an old typewriter up. The calls were benign, average. My answer was usually yes, and I'd wait for them to hang up before I went back to my free time project.

The type writer became my permanent fixture as I began to use it to work on a book. Tappings and chings stopping long enough to answer the phone. The questions began to get more complex, but I only used the yes or no as I had been instructed. This job was too cushy to let my curiosity or confusion get to me.

As the months went by, I finished the book, started another, picked up a laptop, and started to learn a coding language. The questions began to get morally concerning, but if I wasn't given any context, I didn't ask for it. I answered the question yes or no and continued.
