Other images pour out and mix, in a museum that is perhaps his own memory. Time rolls back again, the moment returns. But you have to say something. where is it now, who is it now? (NO ANSWER)

12 Silent Men In this chatty feature film, a silent short is hiding. Filmscalpel isolated the shots in which no character is talking: the quiet lulls in the stormy debate and the wordless reaction shots. Is the story arc still comprehensible? Can you still sense the tension and the power struggles between the twelve jurors? Judge for yourself.

The Weight of Gravity from Filmscalpel on Vimeo.
Follow Filmscalpel on Twitter: @filmscalpel
When it was released in 2013, Gravity was that rare case of a movie that was (generally) well received by public, critics and film scholars alike. Critics even wielded lofty terms such as "avant-garde" and famous film scholars described it as an "experimental film". High and nearly unanimous praise indeed.
But Gravity is also a movie of contradictions. It features state-of-the-art special effects that push the boundaries of film technology. Yet this high tech extravaganza also evokes early cinematic technology and experience. It is a film that focuses on bodily experience, taking us on a breathless ride with the (heavily breathing) Sandra Bullock. Yet in other ways this film denounces the human body and its autonomy.
Several years have passed since Gravity blasted off in cinemas, so maybe this is a good time to take another look at the movie and at what makes it remarkable. What is its importance in film (and even art) history? Did it herald a new way of filmmaking or did it harken back to earlier episodes of this art form? Those are the questions this video essay tries to address, along the way connecting Cuarón's movie to abstract expressionist painting and computer chess.

Landed on Filmscalpel.com after reading a review of the movie “First Reformed”, in which the critic says:
This isn't just Paul Schrader's best picture in years; it distills his brilliant, erratic career into one magnum opus. It brings together his background in Calvinist theology, his fascination with male sociopathic rage and his scholarly expertise on the austere, contemplative style of filmmakers like Carl Theodor Dreyer and Yasujirō Ozu.
For reference, the linked article about Paul Schrader states that he wrote the screenplays for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The Last Temptation of Christ. IMO, Raging Bull is a great movie.
Anyway, I had to look up the “austere, contemplative style” of Yasujiro Ozu...saw what turned out to be a video essay called “The Eternal Virgin”, and found a page of video essays.
Thank goodness I listen to public radio.

Sound Unseen: The Acousmatic Jeanne Dielman from Filmscalpel on Vimeo.
Is Jeanne Dielmans’ apartment on 23, quai du Commerce in Brussels a haunted house? It might well be. Because the dwelling where most of Chantal Akerman’s 1975 masterpiece is set is often eerily deserted, with only the distant sounds of shuffling feet and clanging keys filling its hallways. As the camera waits for the titular protagonist to arrive (or lingers after she has left), the rooms are reduced to echo chambers. Jeanne Dielman is disembodied, a ghost even in her own domestic realm. Her visual absence in these moments represents quite literally the invisibility of her plight: a life lived in the shadows, a fate suffered just around a corner, conveniently out of view for the rest of society. This video essay consists of those moments in "Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles" where we are left to ponder empty rooms and corridors. We hear a day in the life of Jeanne Dielman while the desolate visuals function as a memory palace. The video essay suggests that these motionless moments are not appendages but the heart of the movie. A heart with four empty chambers.

Pretty Messed Up #6 | God vs. Satan from Filmscalpel on Vimeo.
Prepare for a match-up of epic proportions. In the left corner: the prince of darkness, the king of hell, Beelzebub or Baphomet... the evil known as Satan. In the right corner: the all powerful, all knowing, Absolute Being... the heavenly good known as God. They square off in this mammoth mash-up of two dozen movies.
This is the final instalment of Pretty Messed Up, a limited series of conceptual movie mashups by Peet Gelderblom (directorama.net). You may know Gelderblom from his side-by-side montage that pitted Hitchcock against De Palma in a Split Screen Bloodbath (vimeo.com/193068848), or from his Director’s Cut of Raising Cain (directorama.net/raising-cain-directors-cut/).
