I developed some film today! Have a blurry but compelling phone scan of part of the negative. Once it's dry, I get to spend an hour or two painstakingly scanning all these with my actual film scanner. I'm excited to properly see how they came out, given that my film chemistry was mixed before the pandemic and has come along with me through two or three separate living arrangements. (For reference it's supposed to last, like... a year.)

Over the holidays, my brother delighted me with his interest in our dad's old film camera, FED 5b.
I ended up handing him a roll of Kodak T-Max P3200 that he shot indoors. It was his first time with a film and a rangefinder camera, and he chose to eyeball his exposures.
The next step was to develop the film, which is when we both learned something new.
This was my first time developing black and white film (my recent first emulsion in a tank was a roll of C-41, which worked out surprisingly well). Evan's much better than me with Chemistry (he's in his final years as an undergrad) and so he was able to help me out in more ways than one.
Aside from being our first time developing film, this was also the first time with Cffenol, i.e. making the chemicals from stuff found around the house.
We ended up using the Caffenol C-H formula, adjusted to 19 minutes in the tank. There was no washing soda, so we baked the baking soda to make some. There was no potassium bromide, so we relied on a hunch from a blog post that suggested substituting it with a 20x in table salt weight. There was no fixer either, so we followed another suggestion: water and salt bath, in which we submerged the film overnight at 43℃ and allowed it to cool.
We had to crush the vitamin C pills and filter them a number of times to get rid of the chalky residues. Once mixed with the washing soda, some really nasty white strings of "cheese" appeared, which we also filtered.
The negatives looked really dark and brown out of the tank, showing lots of base fog. But the pictures still turned out (scanned on PrimeFilm XAs).

6/2/23 - Back In The Darkroom
It has been quite some time since I’ve posted any updates on here. Started a new job, still sorting through lots of family concerns, and trying to stay ahead of the ball all the way around has left little time for playing around in the darkroom. But, I finally had a chance to get back in the darkroom and do some printing this past weekend. I had about 6 rolls of film (4 bulk rolled Kentmere 100,…

Should You Use a Larger Film Developing Tank?
by Johnny Martyr If you’ve been processing you own film for some time and enjoy shooting alot of film, you might be growing out of your conventional, student-size one or two reel developing tanks. Think about it. Let’s say you have ten rolls of Kodak Tri-X 35mm that you want to process in Kodak HC110b. If you use one two-reel Dot Line developing tank (my favorite model two-reel tank), you will…
