Stage 6 Can You Handel This?
The concept of “Can You Handel This” is about giving different music-related challenges to our performers and lecturer. The challenge will change for every episode. The main purpose of these videos is to be engaging and attract the audience to stay tuned for our concert in 2023.
My key deliverables are to edit the videos on video editing software and post a preview of every episode every Wednesday before posting the full video every Friday. My main challenge is to make the video both engaging and fun. However, I have only done video editing on my own but not in any professional setting. A key struggle I face is that there is no easy way to insert funny sound effects and video effects.
Another main struggle I face is meeting the expectation of our director. She has a certain vision and outlook on how the video should look and I have to find ways to meet her expectations in video editing. Additionally, sometimes the way the video is filmed makes it hard to insert photos and videos on top of the main video.
It took me a very long time to get a grasp on editing the videos. For the very first episode, I took more than 10 hours to figure out how to use the Final Cut Pro software and edited a complete episode 1. The entire editing process includes video synchronisation with audio, cutting out unnecessary parts, finding and adding suitable sound effects and stickers to the video clips, making highlights of each episode, and adding subtitles.
I went to watch plenty of videos on how to use the software in order for me to edit more proficiently. Along the way, I also faced issues with limited memory space due to large editing. Nevertheless, I managed to resolve those issues and improve the average time for me to edit an episode down to 6-7 hours for a 6 mins video.
It was a fulfilling experience for me to learn a skill on my own and use them in a professional setting. In this journey, I also learned how to work with people effectively and efficiently as it requires lots of teamwork and communication on feedback and support. The detailed marketing plan also drives me to work promptly in order to meet the deadline.

“Mulan” inadvertently reveals why it’s so difficult to create multicultural content with global appeal in 2020. It highlights the vast disconnect between Asian Americans in Hollywood and Chinese nationals in China, as well as the extent to which Hollywood fails to acknowledge the difference between their aesthetics, tastes and politics. It also underscores the limits of the American conversation on representation in a global world.
In conversations with several Asian-American creatives, Variety found that many feel caught between fighting against underrepresentation in Hollywood and being accidentally complicit in China’s authoritarian politics, with no easy answers for how to deal with the moral questions “Mulan” poses.
“When do we care about representation versus fundamental civil rights? This is not a simple question,” says Bing Chen, co-founder of Gold House, a collective that mobilizes the Asian American community to help diverse films, including “Mulan,” achieve opening weekend box office success via its #GoldOpen movement. “An impossible duality faces us. We absolutely acknowledge the terrible and unacceptable nature of what’s going on over there [in China] politically, but we also understand what’s at stake on the industry side.”
The film leaves the Asian American community at “the intersection of choosing between surface-level representation — faces that look like ours — versus values and other cultural nuances that don’t reflect ours,” says Lulu Wang, director of “The Farewell.”
In a business in which past box office success determines what future projects are bankrolled, those with their eyes squarely on the prize of increasing opportunities for Asian Americans say they feel a responsibility to support “Mulan” no matter what. That support is often very personal amid the industry’s close-knit community of Asian Americans, where people don’t want to tear down the hard work of peers and friends.
“‘Mulan’ is actually the first film where the Asian American community is really split,” says sociologist Nancy Wang Yuen, who examines racism in Hollywood. “For people who are more global and consume more global news, maybe they’re thinking, ‘We shouldn’t sell our soul in order to get affirmation from Hollywood.’ But we have this scarcity mentality.
“I felt like I couldn’t completely lambast ‘Mulan’ because I personally felt solidarity with the Asian American actors,” Yuen continues. “I wanted to see them do well. But at what cost?”
This scarcity mentality is particularly acute for Asian American actors, who find roles few and far between. Lulu Wang notes that many “have built their career on a film like ‘Mulan’ and other crossovers, because they might not speak the native language — Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Hindi — to actually do a role overseas, but there’s no role being written for them in America.”
Certainly, the actors in “Mulan,” who have seen major career breakthroughs tainted by the film’s political backlash, feel this acutely. “You have to understand the tough position that we are in here as the cast, and that Disney is in too,” says actor Chen Tang, who plays Mulan’s army buddy Yao.
There’s not much he can do except keep trying to nail the roles he lands in hopes of paving the way for others. “The more I can do great work, the more likely there’s going to be somebody like me [for kids to look at and say], ‘Maybe someday that could be me.’”
Part of the problem is that what’s happening in China feels very distant to Americans. “The Chinese-speaking market is impenetrable to people in the West; they don’t know what’s going on or what those people are saying,” says Daniel York Loh of British East Asians and South East Asians in Theatre and Screen (BEATS), a U.K. nonprofit seeking greater on-screen Asian representation.
Some of the disconnect is understandable: With information overload at home, it’s hard to muster the energy to care about faraway problems. But part of it is a broader failure to grasp the real lack of overlap between issues that matter to the mainland’s majority Han Chinese versus minority Chinese Americans. They may look similar, but they have been shaped in diametrically different political and social contexts.
“China’s nationalist pride is very different from the Asian American pride, which is one of overcoming racism and inequality. It’s hard for Chinese to relate to that,” Yuen says.
Beijing-born Wang points out she often has more in common with first-generation Muslim Americans, Jamaican Americans or other immigrants than with Chinese nationals who’ve always lived in China and never left.
If the “Mulan” debacle has taught us anything, in a world where we’re still too quick to equate “American” with “white,” it’s that “we definitely have to separate out the Asian American perspective from the Asian one,” says Wang. “We have to separate race, nationality and culture. We have to talk about these things separately. True representation is about capturing specificities.”
She ran up against the industry’s inability to make these distinctions while creating “The Farewell.” Americans felt it was a Chinese film because of its subtitles, Chinese cast and location, while Chinese producers considered it an American film because it wasn’t fully Chinese. The endeavor to simply tell a personal family story became a “political fight to claim a space that doesn’t yet exist.”
In the search for authentic storytelling, “the key is to lean into the in-betweenness,” she said. “More and more, people won’t fit into these neat boxes, so in-betweenness is exactly what we need.”
However, it may prove harder for Chinese Americans to carve out a space for their “in-betweenness” than for other minority groups, given China’s growing economic clout.
Notes author and writer-producer Charles Yu, whose latest novel about Asian representation in Hollywood, “Interior Chinatown,” is a National Book Award finalist, “As Asian Americans continue on what I feel is a little bit of an island over here, the world is changing over in Asia; in some ways the center of gravity is shifting over there and away from here, economically and culturally.”
With the Chinese film market set to surpass the US as the world’s largest this year, the question thus arises: “Will the cumulative impact of Asian American audiences be such a small drop in the bucket compared to the China market that it’ll just be overwhelmed, in terms of what gets made or financed?”
As with “Mulan,” more parochial, American conversations on race will inevitably run up against other global issues as U.S. studios continue to target China. Some say Asian American creators should be prepared to meet the challenge by broadening their outlook.
“Most people in this industry think, ‘I’d love for there to be Hollywood-China co-productions if it meant a job for me. I believe in free speech, and censorship is terrible, but it’s not my battle. I just want to get my pilot sold,’” says actor-producer Brian Yang (“Hawaii Five-0,” “Linsanity”), who’s worked for more than a decade between the two countries. “But the world’s getting smaller. Streamers make shows for the world now. For anyone that works in this business, it would behoove them to study and understand the challenges that are happening in and [among] other countries.”
Gold House’s Chen agrees. “We need to speak even more thoughtfully and try to understand how the world does not function as it does in our zip code,” he says. “We still have so much soft power coming from the U.S. What we say matters. This is not the problem and burden any of us as Asian Americans asked for, but this is on us, unfortunately. We just have to fight harder. And every step we take, we’re going to be right and we’re going to be wrong.”

Nihonjinron: Just a couple of thoughts on why Jdramas aren’t as popular as Kdramas
I came across this great thread on quora that includes many great replies about why Jdramas are not as popular as Kdramas. I’d recommend the thread to anybody, but at the same time I’m not on quora so I’m going to give my two cents here.
First some things I don’t agree with. One user gave a great reply, but in her answer she mentioned two particular points that I couldn’t agree with.
First, I disagree that Jdramas aren’t doing as well because they are written by men while Kdramas have women writers. Some of Japan’s most popular screenwriters are female and there are plenty of female screenwriters across the broadcasting companies. I haven’t looked into the number of female producers or directors deeply, but they do exist. And active female screenwriters? Most definitely. Not to forget that female screenwriters contributed to the once explosive popularity of Jdramas across Asia. Talk about Getsu9 dramas and it’ll be hard to talk about Kitagawa Eriko as well.
Next, I disagree that Jdramas lack variety. The reality’s quite the opposite! Jdramas cover multiple genres from comedy, romance, crime, mystery, scifi, adventure and etc. In fact, the primary reason why I’m such a fan of them is precisely because they cover a broad spectrum of genres and topics.
Now for the things I agree with. One user, Michael Do gave a brilliantly comprehensive reply and goes in depth on an issue which I think is the most pertinent one as to why Jdramas are not as popular. That is, the lack of accessibility. Japanese companies are notoriously stringent in taking down illegally uploaded videos, which is fair. But in place of these, they hardly ever support legal avenues through which people can potentially watch said shows. Of course, with the increasing popularity of Netflix, we are starting to see more mainstream dramas on legal online avenues, however, most of the offerings are exclusive to Netflix Japan and do not include subtitles of other languages.
On top of that, which is not as discussed, is that in the early to mid 2000s when Kdrama was on the rise, Jdramas were sold at higher rates than Kdramas. As such, given the choice between them, international broadcasting companies were more reluctant to pick up on Jdramas. And as the Korean government and relevant parties made more effort to improve on their dramas, it effectively decreased the demand for Japanese drama.
Both of these I think, is linked to the fact that for a long time Japan never saw the need to look outward – and this sentiment is echoed by a character in one of my favourite dramas, Manhattan Love Story. Manhattan Love Story is a postmodern drama about people who gather in a café. Because the café is right next to a broadcasting company, these characters are all, in some way, connected to the entertainment business. Among them is a popular female screenwriter (probably based on Kitagawa Eriko), who, in a great self-reflexive moment in drama, complains about being given an award by an overseas awards ceremony. She laments ‘I write dramas for Japanese people.’ That, I think, encapsulates the mindset of the main players in the Japanese industry really well.
But why do the Japanese not look outward? Why the lack of motivation to venture overseas for so long? I think an attempt to answer this question has to start with a look at nihonjinron.
Essentially, nihonjinron are theories on what it means to be Japanese. It’s a broad genre that covers sociology, ethnology, anthropology and so on. Historically these texts emphasise how unique Japan is – and how special its position is in the world. Thoughts associated with the nihonjinron include how the Japanese are direct descendants of the gods, Japanese are homogenous (aka, biracial? You’re not really Japanese), that Japanese have their own unique set of thinking and moral values, and that the Japanese are leaders to their ‘backward’ Asian counterparts.
I’m a fan of golden age Japanese cinema directors, and their surprised reactions to the positive reception of their films are well-documented. They didn’t think films made for a Japanese audience could be understood or appreciated by a foreign audience – and that has a lot to do with this concept of a unique identity and way of thinking as Japanese people. In the same way I feel that Japanese execs kind of have a ‘I don’t think these foreign people are actually gonna GET this’. So marketing to an international audience is not the first thing on their minds.
Then I think that this idea that geographically Japan is part of Asia but not really a part of Asia hinders them from expanding. I remember back when people were really interested in Japanese entertainment, early 2000s when Korean entertainment was just starting to make its mark in Asia but not quite the force it is now. Back then you’d be hard-pressed to find any artiste that would want to have a concert in, say, Singapore or attend an Asian awards show. The furthest some would venture to would be Taiwan, which historically has ties with Japan. So the underlying sentiment seems to be, ‘This is an Asian thing – I’m not really part of y’all.’ And the interesting thing is that this thought is so pervasive that as an Asian I too sometimes felt that Japan was kind of unique. But that kind of haughtiness led to their inwardness and downfall.
Lastly I want to talk about the decline of the international Jdrama fandom. Decline of the fandom is due to Japan not marketing its shows outside of Japan, but the decline of the fandom may lead to Japan being unable to market its shows successfully outside of Japan too. Chicken and egg? Yes.
I love Jdramas, I really do, but Japan’s crackdown on fans who devote time and effort into subbing work and growing an international fandom has really hurt its reach. A weakened, wary fandom results in less subbed works, which leads to less exposure – especially when no legal forms of exposure exist. Big TV companies need to start partnering with Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime on a larger scale – allowing them to market these shows to an international audience, if needs be. It’s all about motivation – motivation to adapt, change and explore new methods. I’m slowly starting to become more optimistic as I see the media streaming trifecta (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon) start to produce more interesting originals, but I hope it’s not a case of too little too late.
What I do know is that there is still a fanbase for Japanese dramas. People like me who adore them, yes, for their uniqueness, for the language, for the atmosphere, for the outlook on community and life, and for the diversity. Japan, please acknowledge us.

What’s On in Copenhagen: February 2019
February may not be everyone’s favorite month in Copenhagen; the excitement about New Year’s resolutions has worn off and winter finally hits, leaving you with a month’s worth of the infamous Tuesday Blues. February, however, is also the gateway to spring; or at least the last chance to really indulge in the cosy, languid hibernation of Scandinavian winter. So let’s make this month worthwhile. As always, there is plenty to do in the city!
Here’s what’s happening in Copenhagen this month:
Sunday 27th January – Sunday 3rd February
Copenhagen Jewish Film Festival
This annual film festival approaches Judaism from many perspectives. Watch some of the selected films, join a dinner, or enjoy a concert. The venues are Cinemateket, Københavns Synagoge, and Verdenskulturcentret.
Tuesday 29th January – Friday 1st February
Copenhagen Fashion Week
Get a sense of what’s going to be hot in 2019 at the largest of the Scandinavian fashion weeks. The festival includes the Copenhagen International Fashion Fair (CIFF), a large trade show with a variety of designers and brands. There’s also plenty to see and do off the runway, so make sure to check out the free events and parties.
Wednesday 30th January – Saturday 2nd February
Copenhagen Fashion Film Festival
Combine fashion and short film at the 8th edition of Copenhagen Fashion Film Festival. The festival features a curated selection of fashion films from all over the world as well as a talk programme. On the last day it finishes off with an award show and final party. The location is open from 12.00 to 22.00 every day and admission is free.
Friday 1st February
Sindroms Magazine White Issue Launch
Sindroms Magazine is an independent print magazine that curates colour across design, art, culture and food. The third issue explores the color white through the concept of a blank canvas. There will be an exhibition about the process behind building the white issue as well as talks, music, and drinks. From 5 pm at VALRYGG Studio.
Opening of the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition
Be the first to see one of the most important open exhibitions in Europe while Apollo Kantine serves the dish of the day for 85 DKK and DJs Slow Coach Club take care of the tunes. The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition has been held annually at Charlottenborg since 1857 and, over the years, has presented works by great internationally renowned artists such as Alvar Aalto and Olafur Eliasson. The exhibition runs until 10th March.
Saturday 2nd February – Sunday 3rd February
Aure Studio
Design Studio Aure produces work across art, object, and fashion design with a focus on timelessness and slow living. Having been founded by four Norwegian friends in Copenhagen, Aure opened up its new combined studio and shop in December. Along the own garments and artworks, you can find a small selection of other brands and local designers. The studio shop is open on Saturdays and Sundays only from 11 am – 3 pm as well as during Copenhagen Fashion Week, from Tuesday 29th January to Friday 1st February, from 11 am – 5 pm. Go check it out!
Saturday 2nd February
The Ice is Melting at the Pøules – Martin Ersted
As part of the Copenhagen Light Festival, the historic North Atlantic House will be wrapped in waves from Martin Ersted’s organic light-art. The color scale is beautiful to look at, but actually conveys an important message as it reflects the past 150 years of global temperature rise. Pro tip: There’s an excellent view over the Copenhagen Harbor from the North Atlantic House. The installation can be seen again on February 9th and 16th. The lights are on from 5 – 10 pm on all dates.
Sunday 3rd February
Dansk guldalder at Glyptoteket
Dive into the Danish Golden Age and Hans Christian Andersen’s Copenhagen in this free viewing of Glyptoteket’s collection of “Dansk Guldalderkunst.” The number of tickets is limited and there is a maximum of two tickets per person, so go early!
Monday 4th February – Sunday 10th February
Copenhagen Winter Pride Week
The younger sibling of Copenhagen Pride reminds us that LGBTQIA+ is about more than a summer parade. There will be talks, performances, debates, and exhibitions culminating with a big party.
Thursday 7th February
Opening of café Picnic at Glyptoteket
Glyptoteket’s café Picnic opens with new name, concept, and interior. Try free samples and enjoy Prolog Coffee Bar’s coffee and Carlsberg’s beer. Don’t miss out when, from 7:30 – 8 pm, Lasse Askov from Picnic and journalist Rune Skyum-Nielsen talk about the joint experience of food and art. From 6 – 9:30 pm.
Friday 8th – Sunday 10th February
Himmeriget 3 Year Birthday

Friday 8th February
MULGEO Official Opening
MULGEO opens their long-term pop up at Torvehallerne! The menu based on the classic blini (small pancake), topped with local, seasonal ingredients, and paired with outstanding wines and other drinks. If you have missed out on the food jury events in their test kitchen back in December and January, now is the chance to try out this new food concept. On the opening day from 3 – 6 pm, all blinis come with a complimentary glass of wine. Cheers!
SMK Fridays: Sonja Ferlov Mancoba Opening Evening
SMK invites to this year’s first SMK Fridays and treats to talks, music, Friday bar and workshops to celebrate the opening of the Sonja Ferlov Mancoba exhibition. The works of the Danish French artist reflect her interest in inter-human connectedness and a global outlook. Throughout the evening, the sculpture garden turns into a haven for everyone craving drinks and food, served by Kafeteria, and music by DJ Jonas Visti. Admission is free and the event is from 4 – 10 pm.
Farao at Ideal Bar
Somewhere between snuggling-up-on-the-sofa-indie and euphoria-inducing electro-pop, Farao might be the perfect soundtrack for February. On February 8th, the Norwegian singer is coming to Copenhagen and will be playing playing at Vega’s Ideal Bar. Tickets are 145 DKK.

One ‘secret’ growth stock I’d consider with IGAS Energy plc
Today I’m going to take a look at a stock that’s risen 511% so far this year. Can this stock market rocket continue climbing, or should investors consider taking some profits?
I’ll also look at the outlook for oil and gas group IGas Energy (LSE: IGAS). With the price of oil rising and a successful refinancing under its belt, is now the right time to take a fresh look at this firm?
Follow the smart money
IGas’s oil and gas assets fall into two categories. The company has a number of conventional UK onshore oil and gas fields, producing about 2,250 barrels of oil per day. But the big hope for future growth is shale gas, where IGas has one of the largest positions in the UK.
One clue that these assets might have potential is that energy industry specialist Kerogen Capital contributed £29m to the group’s refinancing, giving it a 28% stake in the firm. Kerogen is also a major backer of North Sea success story Hurricane Energy, suggesting to me that the company’s stock picks could be worth following.
As a result of several partnership deals, IGas is set to benefit from up to £183m of funded exploration work by its partners. Although the prospects for UK shale gas are still highly uncertain, the company is now well positioned to benefit if early exploration efforts are successful.
In the meantime, rising oil prices should improve the cash generation of the firm’s conventional oil assets. With operating costs of just $28.50 per barrel during the first half, the current Brent Crude price of about $60 should ensure the group continues to generate cash to fund its ongoing operations.
IGas isn’t without risk, but at under 80p per share, I believe the stock could be a speculative buy.
A surprise winner in 2017?
Tech firm Zoo Digital Group (LSE: ZOO) specialises in providing dubbing services for television and movie content. So if you want your film to be voiced and subtitled in a different language, for example, Zoo Digital could help. According to the group’s website, customers include Sony Pictures and Universal.
The shares have risen by a staggering 511% already this year, and now trade on a demanding 2017/18 forecast P/E of 100. So does the group’s current growth rate justify this premium valuation?
Half-year results published on Monday show that revenue during the six months to 30 September rose by 63%, to $12.7m, compared to the same period last year. Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 34% to $1.3m over the same period. Another piece of good news is that the group has reduced its dependency on its largest customer from 47% of revenue to a safer 28%.
I believe this could be a successful growth business. My main concern is that profitability doesn’t seem to be improving as it expands. The firm’s half-year operating profit of $413,000 gives an operating margin of just 3.2%. That’s actually lower than the 4% figure for the same period last year.
Zoo is spending money on expanding its capabilities, which makes sense to me. But I believe profit margins need to rise quite soon to justify the stock’s current valuation. I’d need to do more research before deciding whether to invest.
10 simple steps to £1m
Small-caps like IGas could help you to build a £1m share portfolio. But if you're serious about making a million from shares, I believe you need a more detailed investing strategy to maximise your profits.
In Your 10-Step Guide To Making A Million In The Market, our experts have revealed a simple, 10-step strategy they believe should help you to achieve your financial goals more quickly than you might expect.

"Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets" Review
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets has been a lifelong passion project for filmmaker Luc Besson (The Professional, The Fifth Element, Lucy). Based on a French comic book series entitled Valerian and Laureline, Besson has been trying to get a film version off the ground during his entire filmmaking career. After scoring his biggest hit yet in 2014 with Lucy, Besson finally decided to pull the trigger and make the film. While there were parts of the film that I enjoyed, there were other parts that stopped the film dead in its tracks.
During the opening credits of Valerian, we are treated to a montage about how the space station Alpha became the city of a thousand planets. Hundreds of years later, special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are assigned by the government to investigate a dark force that’s taking place within the center of Alpha. Not only could it affect Alpha, but it could have ramifications across the entire universe.
One of the things that I liked about Valerian is the visual look that Besson and his longtime DP, Thierry Arbogast, gave the film. At times, the film looked like it was leaping off the pages of the comic book. It’s probably one of the most colorful films you will come across this summer. Both the production and creature designs in this were great as well. They did a really good job in making sure one stood out from the other. The production design, especially with Alpha, was astounding. I will say that for both DeHaan and Delevingne, this was better then their last films they were both in (A Cure for Wellness (the 2nd worst film I’ve seen this year) and Suicide Squad). The action scenes were cool, well designed, and imaginative, especially during a sequence at the Big Market that takes place on different dimensions. Including the mostly single take shot from the trailers of Valerian running through different sections of Alpha. When the film was good, it was fun.
One of the biggest problems that I had with this film is the runtime. The story that Besson presented to us in no way warranted the 137-minute runtime that this had. Even though this was his passion project, Besson needed to trim the fat. There are characters and scenes in this film that could be easily eliminated and the film still would have played the same way. With this runtime, the film takes awhile for the plot to kick in (the same issue Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 had earlier this summer). As soon as the film started to get good, it would stop dead in its tracks and nothing would happen. So it keeps you waiting and waiting for developments.
The plot itself was a little confusing to follow, and it’s not particularly exciting. Also, while I said that this was better then their last films respectively, DeHaan and Delevingne had zero chemistry with one another. Maybe there were better actors for these roles. The music from Alexander Desplat was a little disappointing as well in that it’s not particularly memorable. When I first saw the ads, I thought it would be a great film to see in 3D. Sadly, the 3D doesn’t add much to the film, and only a couple of spots here and there. Lastly, the subtitles for a film like this weren’t particularly imaginative, and oddly, they were framed on the extreme edges of the screen.
Overall, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets wasn’t a bad film per say, but it wasn’t a great film. I wished it fully embraced the weirdness that the ads were showing us. For some of the runtime, it delivered what I was hoping for. If they would have cut down the runtime, I think I would have a much more positive outlook on the film. It’s a film that sometimes goes around in circles not knowing what it wants to be. I don’t see this doing well here in the United States, but it’ll be interesting to see how it does overseas. If you want a great sci-fi film from Besson, stick with The Fifth Element. You don’t need to pay the price for a 3D ticket. If you must, go see this during a matinee screening. If not, catch it on TV sometime.

New Post has been published on https://bestnewsmag.com/right-to-education-has-done-more-harm-than-good-return-of-exams-is-just-a-one-step-towards-reform/
Right to Education has done more harm than good; return of exams is just a one step towards reform
Prakash Javadekar, the union minister for human assets development, lately advised The Instances of India: “An Imperative Advisory Board of Schooling (CABE) meeting had taken area these days wherein Training ministers of all states had been the gift. The Education ministers of 25 states demanded that there needs to be a change in the coverage to sell all students till Elegance VIII. They wanted detention in lessons V and VIII. Best 4 states said that they wanted no detention of students.”
In brief, the authorities are deliberating re-introducing assessments at a few tiers within the schooling gadget.
The Right to Education (RTE) basically makes it clear that no infant have to be held returned in Magnificence or expelled from faculty till he has finished his essential Training (i.E., up till General VIII). This becomes carried out so that you can lower the stress on college students. But at the flip aspect, this essential method that there are to be no tests and students keep moving from one Class to some other, regardless of whether or not they’re excellent sufficient for the subsequent Elegance or not. The Act also makes it clear that no toddler should be required to bypass any board exam till the final touch of basic Education. Reuters This along with other matters which might be part of the RTE have ruined the getting to know effects of colleges through the years. The RTE came into impact from 1 April 2010. As consistent with this Act every toddler between six and fourteen has the Right to free and obligatory Schooling in a neighborhood faculty.
As referred to in advance, for the reason that advent of the RTE, the gaining knowledge of consequences of children have come down dramatically. As in line with the brand new Annual Reputation of Training Record (ASER), in 2010, 53.7 percentage of Well-known V students in rural India should read Widespread II stage textual content. By using 2016, this had fallen to 47.eight percent. The fall became extra in case of presidency faculties. In 2010, it had stood at 50.7 percent and By way of 2016, this had fallen to forty-one.6 percent. Consequently, Best around two out of every 5 General V students can study Fashionable II level textual content, in rural India.
In the case of arithmetic, the consequences are even more disastrous. In 2010, 36.2 percent of Trendy V students in rural India may want to do department. This had dropped to 26 percent With the aid of 2016. In the case of presidency colleges, the parent has dropped from 33.9 percentage to 21.1 percent. Hence, Most effective round one-5th of presidency faculty students studying in Fashionable V in rural India can do department.
What this tells us is that scholars aren’t mastering what they’re anticipated to research in a given Elegance. And notwithstanding this, they may be promoted to the following Elegance, given that there are not any tests. That is something that Javadekar desires to exchange With the aid of re-introducing assessments. Indeed, that may be a precise thought.
The RTE really specifies that the instructor ought to entire the entire curriculum (i.E., the syllabus) in the specified time. This regardless of the truth whether they are knowledge matters or not.
As economist Abhijit Banerjee said at a literature competition a few years returned: “Beneath the Right to Training Act, each 12 months you’re presupposed to cool the syllabus. It doesn’t rely upon whether the kids apprehend something. Think about all the usual IV children who can’t study. they are learning Social Research and all sorts of other remarkable matters – except [that] they are able to study. they may be gaining knowledge of not anything. they’re sitting in a category looking some film in some overseas language without subtitles. Consequently, the drop-out quotes are excessive. And I’m stunned why everybody comes to school at all.”
So, at the same time as instructors are busy completing the syllabus, most college students don’t study a whole lot. In the meantime, they hold getting promoted and soon they’re totally lost on what’s happening in Class. The shortage of regular attendance, each of teachers in addition to students, has its impact. Moreover, the point of interest is on completing the syllabus. Given this, the academics concentrate on that and no longer on how lots gaining knowledge of is taking location. in the system, they come to be addressing the needs of a small portion of the Magnificence which follows what’s being taught and pass over the rest.
Subsequently, the reintroduction of assessments in Class V and sophistication VIII isn’t always going to help a great deal. By the time the student might be tested in Magnificence V, it’ll be too late. The horrific studying effects will already be in place and the examination will just keep him or her again in General V, without doing whatever about improving the studying consequences. Possibilities are he or she will be able to soon drop out.
As economist Esther Duflo places it: “getting to know is not about enrollment, the teacher-scholar ratio [or] having latrines in colleges; it’s about if we are severe approximately studying.” The question is: Are we critical about getting to know? It turns out that we aren’t. A simple problem with the RTE stays that it expects children to be ready for simple Education after they enter Fashionable I. In reality, as Duflo places it: “With the aid of the give up of Grade 1, they are speculated to be performed with analyzing…. It’s an entire delusion.”
In reality, it’s miles worth emphasizing here that when a toddler joins Popular I, in most instances, he or she typically comes from a text-scarce environment. In many cases, the dad and mom may not have long gone to high school or Handiest long gone to school for some years.
Given this, the solution to this problem is not completing the syllabus or having tests. the answer as Duflo places it’s miles to be serious approximately learning. And the way can that show-up? Banerjee made a completely thrilling factor about this a few years again whilst he said: “We did one experiment in Bihar which became with authorities faculty instructors…. the teachers have been instructed: ‘Instead of teaching as you generally educate, your process for the following six weeks is to get the kids to study a few simple talents. If they are able to read, educate them to read. If they can’t do math[s], train them to do math[s].’ On the end of six weeks, these teachers were given a small stipend. They’d additionally been given multiple days of education.”
And how did the scholars do? As Banerjee mentioned: “At the cease of six weeks, the children had closed 1/2 the distance among the pleasant performing children and the worst appearing youngsters. They’d definitely advanced quite.”
So, what became taking place right here? the lecturers did now not have to complete the syllabus in this situation because the RTE mandates. They had to teach college students what the students did no longer understand. As Banerjee put it: “within the first four years, we must prioritize the studying of primary competencies – overlook approximately getting to know the records of the united states of America, etc. You don’t know who Gandhiji changed into for the primary 4 years. Permit’s simply deal with students being able to study and do simple maths. I assume that such a system could deliver a miles higher final results.”
Therefore, to supply better mastering consequences what is wanted is a radical reorientation of the way matters are taught in schools throughout this united states. And that, as I maintain pronouncing, is less complicated stated than done.
Schooling—like democracy, free markets, freedom of the click, and “ordinary human rights” — is one of those topics whose distinctive feature is considered self-glaring. So is the prevalence of the industrially superior international locations in accomplishing them. Consequently, any package deal that arrives with such a magic labels on it mechanically qualifies for the “inexperienced channel” at our access ports. No questions requested. This uncritical recognition has critically crippled our discussion of these types of essential subjects. For example in Training maximum of our discussion facilities around literacy records and the need to have such a lot of graduates, masters, Ph.D.’s, and so many specialists — engineers, doctors, and many others.— in a given u. S . A . primarily based on the standards within the industrially superior countries. The Valuable issue of curriculum or even greater fundamental problem of the cause of Schooling usually do not entice our attention; they have got already been determined By using the “superior’ countries for us and our task is Simplest to follow in their footsteps to attain their level of progress.
Indeed they have got. in the “first” world, Schooling has to turn out to be an extension of the capitalist system. Its cause is to offer the qualified body of workers for its equipment of manufacturing and eager consumers for its products. Stated in a more polished shape, the cause of Education is to offer for the monetary prosperity of a rustic. In addition to a personal degree today the purpose of Training is a good way to earn a decent residing.
whilst earning halal residing and imparting for the financial properly being of a country are sincerely important Islamic dreams as well, the linking of Education to monetary desires is extremely unlucky. It turns the facilities of gaining knowledge of into mere vocational facilities of their outlook and spirit. It degrades Schooling and thru it the society.
To deliver domestic the pivotal But forgotten position of Schooling we want to recall that there may be an essential difference between people and animals. Instincts and bodily desires alone can deliver ants, bees, or herds of beasts collectively to live in a perfectly functioning animal society. humans do not characteristic that manner. they’re no longer confined By way of nature to observe Best the one’s methods that are important for the harmonious operation in their society. If they may be to form a possible, thriving society, they need to selected to achieve this. What drives that choice is the sharing of common desires, ideals, values and outlook on lifestyles. without a not unusual framework binding its contributors, a human society cannot continue to exist; it’ll disintegrate and be absorbed By using different societies. Further, the society should make sure that the not unusual floor will retain to maintain from technology to generation. This is the actual motive of Schooling. The Education gadget of a society produces the residents and leaders wished for the clean operation of that society, now and into the future. Its nation of fitness or sickness translates directly into the fitness or illness of the society that it is meant to serve.
these days we find many internal issues — corruption, injustice, oppression, crippling poverty — anywhere we turn in the Muslim international. If we reflect consideration on it, we may additionally realize that most of these issues are man-made. That is any other manner of announcing that they are in large part traceable, directly or not directly, to the Education machine that produced the folks who perpetuate the issues. The rulers who sell out to overseas powers and subjugate their human beings; the bureaucrats who put in force legal guidelines based totally on injustice; the generals who wage struggle against their personal people; the businessmen who take advantage of and cheat; the journalists who lie, sensationalize, and promote indecencies, they’re all educated human beings, In many instances “quite” educated people. Their Training was intended to put together them for the jobs they’re gambling in actual existence. And it has, despite the fact that in a completely surprising manner!
The trouble plagues all layers of society. Why are Muslim groups within the grip of a lot of materialism these days? What needs to we anticipate while our entire Education gadget is preaching the gospel of materialism? Why have we efficaciously relegated Islam to a small inconsequential region in our public existence? Due to the fact that is exactly in which our secular Training machine has put it. Why in our behavior in the direction of each different we see so little show of Islamic manners and morals? Due to the fact, our imported Education device is without all ethical training. Why our societies are ill? Because our Training machine is sick.
That is the real disaster of Education. Before we got into this mess With the aid of importing from the exams Colonial powers what was present day and popular, towards schooling in our societies changed into usually the method of nurturing the person.
ethical education, Arabiya, become always an inalienable a part of it. The Ustaz,(instructor), turned into not just a lecturer or mere professional, However a mentor and ethical guide. We remembered the hadith then, “No father has given a more present to his children than excellent ethical training.” [Tirmidhi]. Our Training gadget was knowledgeable By using this hadith. Our Darul-rooms still keep that tradition however the quantity of college students who bypass through their gates is minuscule compared to the secular schools.
within the U.S. And Europe, the schools have been started out With the aid of the church. Later as forces of capitalism overtook them, they molded them into their picture. ethical schooling turned into a casualty of that takeover. However, capitalism and their political economy did want humans trained to work Below these structures. So citizenship schooling changed into retained as a vital, although diminishing, the aspect of the curriculum— a faith-unfastened subset of the ethical education it displaced. Something civility we see right here is largely a result of that leftover thing. The imported versions inside the Muslim international locations, even though, had even that aspect filtered out. And the outcomes are seen.
We will resolve our trouble once we realize our mistakes. the first reason of our Schooling machine ought to be to supply certified citizens and leaders for the Islamic society. Tarbiya, actual Islamic moral education, have to be a critical a part of it. This ought to be the soul of our Schooling, no longer a ceremonial husk. All plans for enhancing our Schooling will be totally vain until they are primarily based on a complete know-how of this key truth. This calls for revamping our curricula, rewriting our textbooks, retraining our instructors, and knowing that we have to do all this ourselves. We do have wealthy records of doing it. Are we sooner or later willing to turn to our very own in-house treasures to redo Education the manner it must always have been?
Secrets and techniques to Passing the California Coverage License exam
Like most States, California calls for that you bypass a central authority administered license exam Earlier than you can dangle your shingle to promote Coverage.
