2023 Media Thread #1 - Brahmāstra: Part One - Shiva
I need to figure out a way to keep track of what I actually watched/played/read and a way to do something with this blog, so off we go with a review thread. Starting with one of the biggest blockbusters of India's cinema - Brahmāstra: Part One - Shiva.
Tumblr media
Meant to be a start of a new cinematic universe called the Astraverse, Brahmāstra has to pull a double duty of not only being an entertaining film but also setting up a long-term franchise.
The story follows a young man called Shiva, who is an orphan that works as a DJ. At the beginning of the movie, he witnesses a beautiful woman at a party called Isha and deeply falls in love with her at the first sight. At the same time, he starts receiving mysterious visions of events that could threaten the world if he does not act and discover his destiny.
The audiovisual aspects of the movie are at a very high level. Actions scenes are a visual spectacle and get the blood pumping, while the music does a wonderful job of instilling larger-than-life flavour into the scenes.
...that said, this is a love story where the main couple gets together by the middle of the first act and doesn't really evolve after that. No conflict, no upshake, it's the most static thing in the whole movie. That's not a good thing, given that Brahmāstra is primarily a love story at it's core. The movie is also almost three hours long, so it really doesn't give you much to chew on.
Shiva, played by Ranpir Kapoor, is a decent enough main character. He's got a charismatic pull to him, he can carry a movie. A love story needs two people to it though and Isha, played by Alia Bhatt, doesn't really pull her weight. Shiva and Isha don't really have a good chemistry and Isha's role largely amounts to being in love with Shiva after knowing him for one night. She just has nothing to do.
The other half of the story, the organization of Brahmansh, it's duty to protect the all-powerful astra (a hindu term for supernatural weapons, largely wielded by gods) known as Brahmastra and how Shiva ties into, is more well-put together by comparison. It's fine with a few hitches, but it moves forward and develops.
Even so, the movie's writing is the weakest element of the movie. Beside Shiva, the characters are only loosely characterized. There's a a group of characters in the latter half particularly that I would struggle to tell you anything about beside what astras they wield.
I think that this movie functions well enough as a start to a cinematic universe. It's a setting in which you could make a cool movie. This was not such a movie, but I'm willing to give whatever they're cooking next a shot.

The makers of Brahmstra reveal Ranbir Kapoor's special training before its release on OTT
Tumblr media
New Delhi: Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer astraverse drama 'Brahmastra' raged at the box office with its release on September 9. The film became one of the biggest blockbusters of the year, earning over 250 crores. The Ayan Mukerji directorial is now all set to stream on the ott platform Disney+Hotstar, to the delight of all those who missed watching it in theatres. From protecting Isha from Junoon’s wrath to transforming his hand into a fire sword, when Ranbir Kapoor used the Agniastra in Brahmāstra: Part One–Shiva, the audience was more than mesmerized. While the VFX and CGI effects presented a stellar cinematic experience, perfecting the movements in the backdrop of blue and green screens demanded movement perfection. Ahead of the action-adventure fantasy film's digital release, Disney+ Hotstar shared an exclusive behind-the-scenes video of the star’s demanding preparation which required him to change his own movement habits. From juggling to practicing controlled air movements, the star is seen doing it all. The never-before-seen video presents a glimpse of the mammoth preparation and process that went into making the masterpiece that Indian audiences fell in love with in 2022. Check out the video here:   Discussing his vision for the film in an exclusive BTS video, director Ayan Mukerji says, “Every moment where Shiva physically, emotionally and spiritually connects with his powers of fire, had to be crafted very carefully. So that every time he used these powers, they would feel graphed and real. There was no context or reference  - it all had to be imagined, and then created. That is why we met Ido and eventually collaborated with him to help Ranbir and me, create the movement you now see on screen” Produced by Star Studios,  Dharma Productions, Ayan Mukerji & Prime Focus and directed and written by stalwart Ayan Mukerji, the film stars an ensemble of highly revered actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy and Nagarjuna Akkineni. In an Instagram post, director Ayan Mukherji confirmed that his Hindi-language fantasy adventure film would be available for streaming on the platform, starting November 4. Starring Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor in the lead, the film is the first of a planned trilogy, and explores various Hindu myths in a modern-day setting. Brahmāstra is helmed under Karan Johar's Dharma Productions banner, and is aimed at kickstarting India's own cinematic universe, ‘The Astraverse.'It was only fitting for Mukherji to share the update a day prior to Diwali, since his film Brahmāstra, is set amidst the festival of lights. Following the September 9 theatrical release, the film's writer-director claims to have continued technical work on the movie, adding a “few subtle things” to try and refine it for phones, televisions, and other platforms. “I am excited for Brahmāstra to be in your homes soon so it can be experienced afresh in the most convenient manner,” he concluded the post. All you Need to Know About Brahmāstra: Part One – ShivaProduction on Brahmāstra had been in a state of flux since 2014, with the COVID-19 pandemic further delaying the release window, initially set for 2016. Produced on an estimated budget of Rs. 410 crore, it is the costliest Bollywood movie to date — falling just short behind S.S. Rajamouli's Telugu-language RRR, and the Rajnikanth-led 2.0 in Tamil. Brahmāstra plot follows Shiva (Kapoor), a young DJ, who harnesses a strange connection with the elemental power of fire. His whole life gets turned upside down when Guru Arvind (Amitabh Bachchan), a strange visitor from afar, reaches out for help with obtaining the titular weapon/ astra — capable of annihilating the entire universe.“Brahmastra is a grand celebration of our rich Indian culture, of our spirituality, and a product of where our unique history meets technology,” director Mukherji said in a prepared statement. “With the OTT release on Disney+ Hotstar, we will now be able to bring Brahmastra even closer to audiences across the globe, to be watched in the comfort of their homes with their friends and families.”Brahmāstra opened to mixed critical reception, collecting Rs. 320 crore in India and Rs. 111 crore overseas, for a worldwide total of Rs. 431 crore. The film also stars Bhatt as Isha, Shiva's love interes; Mouni Roy as Junoon the Queen of Darkness; Nagarjuna as Anish, a member of the Brahmānsh; and Shah Rukh Khan in a cameo role.Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva will be available for streaming from November 4 on Disney+ Hotstar.Affiliate links may be automatically generated - see our ethics statement for details. Hindi Fantasy Epic Overwhelms & Exhausts
Hindi Fantasy Epic Overwhelms & Exhausts
Imagine a fantasy epic that combines Hindu religious themes with MCU-styled blockbuster action and extravagant Bollywood musical numbers. Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva puts all of those ingredients in a blender, adds lighter fuel, and then sets it on fire. The spectacle overwhelms your senses with a relentless aural and visual assault. The film never stops to breathe over a tiresome two-hour and…

And for saying yes…” Sharing how the characters are deep-rooted in India’s rich culture and are representative of it, Ayan Mukherji said, “Brahmastra is a grand celebration of our rich and unique Indian culture.
