Blog Post #3: M&S Schmalberg
On Thursday, September 12, 2024, our NYC Fashion Study Experience course visited M&S Schmalberg, a custom flower company specializing in fabric flowers. When I first researched the company, I was excited to learn about its history, having been established in 1916 and passed down through generations. As the last remaining artificial flower wholesaler in New York City’s Garment District, the company has become a staple, enduring for over a century in an ever-evolving industry. I was impressed by its ability to adapt and preserve its legacy.
When entering the office, I was captivated by the past works on the walls, including pieces created for notable clients. A moment that stood out to me was discovering that M&S Schmalberg contributed to one of the iconic looks in Crazy Rich Asians, one of my favorite films. Despite the company’s continued success, the guide shared the challenges they face in today’s market, such as competition from overseas manufacturers offering lower costs. Additionally, pricing has become a significant issue, as many consumers are reluctant to pay for artisanal craftsmanship. To remain competitive, they’ve had to adapt to the rise of fast fashion and the increasing practice of offshoring.
One of the most interesting aspects of the visit was learning about the flower-making process. The guide walked us through each step, starting with starching the fabric to ensure it holds its shape during production. The fabric is then folded to maximize efficiency in cutting out shapes. Unlike ironing, these cutouts are placed in heated molds, which create the desired three-dimensional shape and texture. The molds are then pressed to crease further and define the fabric. Once texturized, the cutouts are passed to artisans for assembly using either sewing or adhesives. Witnessing this process in person was fascinating, as it reminded me of my own high school projects where I made three-dimensional flowers from unconventional materials. Despite the difference in materials, it was remarkable to see the similarities between my creative process and that of professionals in the industry.
During the tour, we had the opportunity to ask questions. I asked whether certain materials are more difficult to work with than others. The guide explained that thicker materials like leather present challenges in cutting due to their irregular shape and thickness, while synthetics like vinyl require careful temperature regulation during molding to avoid melting. I found this particularly intriguing, as I hadn’t previously considered how melting points could impact production.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and gained valuable insights into an industry I knew little about. Seeing the incredible variety of flowers available for purchase, each unique in its own way, highlighted the artistry and skill involved in their creation. The experience deepened my appreciation for the craftsmanship behind these fabric flowers and the artisans’ dedication.
