Celebrate Armed Force Veterans Day on 14th January
Tumblr media
Since 2017, 14th January has been celebrated as Armed Force Veterans Day in India. It is celebrated in the honour of Field Marshal KM Cariappa OBE, the first Indian Commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces. KM Cariappa retired on 14th January 1953, and hence the event falls on this day.
One can talk for days about KM Cariappa’s bravery and wit. He is one of the only two Indian Army officers to hold the five-star rank field marshal, the distinction he shares with Sam Mankeshaw. He was the first Indian to enrol in Staff College in Quetta, first Indian to command a battalion, and one of the first two Indians to be selected to train at the prestigious Imperial Defence College in Camberley. His service to the nation didn’t stop after retirement, as he founded Indian Ex-Servicemen League (IELS) in 1964, to promote the welfare of Indian veterans. In his career spanning three decades, KM Cariappa stood as a pillar of bravery and wits.
Tumblr media
Indian Armed Force Veterans Day is celebrated across the country to commemorate the sacrifices made by our veterans. Last year, a celebration was held at Manekshaw Center, Delhi Cantt, in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral R.Hari Kumar. Numerous such events are held across the country.
While these events are being held, you as a citizen can also make contributions to the welfare of the veterans on this auspicious occasion. Here are some of the NGOs actively working that you can support on this day:
Sainik Welfare Organisation (SWO)
Created by ex-servicemen, SWO dedicates itself to the cause of making our veterans financially independent. They provide employment opportunities to the ones who have fought for our country and provide housing services for them. It also helps the widows of our soldiers.
Lakshya Foundation
Started by some selfless volunteers, this body organises events dedicated to tell the tales of the bravery of our Indian soldiers. They use their platforms to create awareness and empathy for our armed forces. They also shed light on the plight of soldiers and their gallant sacrifices.
Veer Nari Shakti Foundation
The battle is not only fought on the fields, but also in the hearts of the family members, who have bravely sent their family to fight for our country. Veer Nari Shakti aims to provide relief to such families. Since the last 21 years, Veer Nari Shakti Foundation has been an exemplary NGO which has supported hundreds of families who have lost their loved ones in service to their country.
Paraplegic Rehabilitation Center
Most of the time, our soldiers sustain injuries which scar them for life. Their lives become distraught in such crucial circumstances. Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre provides relief and medical care to such soldiers who have been wounded to make sure that we get sound sleep at night.
Vasantharatna Foundation of Arts (VRFA)
VRFA was started by Subhashini Vasanth, in tribute to her husband, Late Colonel Vasanth Venugopal, who was martyred while fighting insurgents at Jammu and Kashmir. VRFA identifies the families of martyrs and their needs, provides scholarships, job placement, legal counselling and vocational training to the family members of Indian soldiers.
So, this 14th of January, hurl your tiranga and celebrate the bravery and grit of our jawaans serving in the borders, and make sure to look after the ones who have fought previously for our peace and security.

Much has been said about the politicisation of armed forces during the Lok Sabha elections of 2019. Some political commentators have also termed it an attack on the institution of Armed Forces. However, some others have said that PM Modi deserves to get credit for the unprecedented and decisive Balakot strikes in Pakistan, as it is him who would have been blamed, had anything gone wrong.

Speaking on the occasion, Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria assured that the welfare of the veterans would be taken care of. “For Air Force starting as an auxiliary force in 1932 and growing to where we are today, a lethal, potent aerospace power – on this Veterans’ Day, I would like to acknowledge with respect and pride the contribution of our Veterans in this journey,” he said. “I would like to assure you that we are fully committed to look after your welfare and all issues related to whatever matter that comes up whether pension, support, or any other thing. A lot has been covered in terms of policies, procedures, and initiatives taken by various departments,” he added. The Air Force chief met the veterans from the Air Force and informed them about various new initiatives taken to address their long-pending grievances. Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh extended his heartfelt gratitude to all veterans for their service to the nation. “It is a matter of great pride and honour for me to get an opportunity to speak to our Veterans on the occasion of Armed Forces Veterans Day and at the very outset I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all veterans for their service to the nation,” Singh said. “All of us who are in uniform and service today gratefully acknowledge that the multidimensional and credible force that we are today is due to the vision, perseverance, and fortitude of our veterans,” he added. The grievances of ex-servicemen at the Veterans’ Day event were also heard. Many veterans explained their issues in detail and officials concerned were directed by the Army Chief to take note and look into them. The day was chosen as recognition of the services rendered by the first Commander-in-Chief of Indian Armed Forces, Field Marshal KM Cariappa, OBE who retired on this day in 1953. Wreath-laying ceremonies and veteran’s meets are being organised in various Military Stations to mark the solidarity towards the next of kin of the brave hearts and towards the veterans as a mark of respect to their selfless duty and sacrifices towards the nation. The Army chief also said 2021 will be celebrated as ‘Golden Victory Year’ to mark the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war victory. “Swarnim Vijay Varsh” song dedicated to the “brave sons” of Bangladesh and India, commemorating their valour and courage during the 1971 War, was released by Admiral Karambir Singh during the celebrations at Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. The song has been written by Kumar Vishwas and sung by Romy. Chris Powell has composed and produced the music under the creative directorship of Nairrit Das.
