Note
For the fanfiction trope mash up, either:
A- royal au and body guard au
B- hospital au and coffee shop au
For Josh/Donna
Josh Lyman is an emergency medicine doctor. When he's asked why he went into emergency medicine, he'll say that no two days are ever the same, that he'd rather chew his own arm off than sit in front of a microscope all day. But the truth is, it's because he lost his big sister when he was a kid, and the idea that he could do something to help others makes that an easier weight to carry.
Josh likes going to the coffee shop across the street from the hospital after a long shift. It's usually quiet by the time he gets off, and it gives him a chance to decompress before heading home. It helps that his best friend Sam Seaborn owns it, too. He walks in one day expecting to see Sam behind the counter, only to discover that Sam has hired someone new.
Her name is Donna, Josh learns. Or Donnatella -- her mom's Italian, her dad's Irish. She's from Wisconsin, of all places -- her shitty boyfriend's finishing up his residency and she's working a couple of different jobs to help them stay afloat. (Leave it to Sam to hire a woman he thinks he can help save.)
Of course, Donna doesn't need anyone's help. She's smart, witty, capable... Josh can't help but be captivated by her. And if he finds himself stopping by for some coffee on non-work days, or on days he knows Sam won't be there, well, sometimes that's how it goes. There are sparks -- of course there are sparks -- but it's not like he can do anything about it. She's dating someone, he's focused on his career, and it's not like he's great with women anyway.
After about a year of regular coffee shop patronage, Josh is on his way out of the hospital after a long shift when he sees Donna, hobbling on crutches as she attempts to make her way out of the emergency room. Turns out she was in a minor car accident and injured her ankle. Dr. Freeride couldn't be bothered to show up to make sure she was okay, so Donna dumped him.
Josh, for his part, is indignant, ranting. He's pretty sure he saw the aforementioned Dr. Freeride in the cafeteria about an hour ago, and what kind of guy can't be bothered to take the elevator up a few floors, and --
Donna cuts him off with a kiss.
Now, when Josh heads over to the coffee shop, Donna's in the corner, saving him a spot. She's getting some last-minute studying done before her big exam -- she's finally finishing the college degree she put off while she was dating Dr. Freeride. She's not sure, but she thinks she might want to get her master's degree after she graduates in a couple of weeks.
The engagement ring has been hidden in Josh's sock drawer since the day he found her leaving the ER.
Give me two tropes from this list and I'll tell you how I'd make them into a joshdonna fic!

Hi! Are there any fics where Claire is the virgin, instead of Jamie, on their wedding night? Thanks!
Hi @jinnelle,
Two fics come to mind with this premise:
Virgin Bedchamber by @takemeawaytocamelot - This one follows canon, everything being the same except that Claire is the virgin instead of Jamie.
Dr. B, Medicine Woman by @crossinginstyle - This one is a complete alternate universe, but it does have that premise.
Fandom, if you know of any other fics that follow this premise, please feel free to leave them in the comments!
Happy Reading!

Author Self-Interview
Tagged by @krastbannert
Name: LJF
Fandoms: I've written for Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, Miraculous Ladybug, Fairy Tail, Tales of Arcadia, Teen Wolf, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Space Boy, Familiar of Zero, Wolf Children, The Dragon Prince, Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, and Yona of the Dawn. I also have fics in the works for Astra: Lost in Space, Angels of Death, One Tree Hill, Harry Potter, and Descendants. Other fandoms I'm in (but haven't yet been bitten by the plot bunny for) include Spy x Family, Fruits Basket, Rising of the Shield Hero, Black Clover, The World is Still Beautiful, Noragami, A Silent Voice, Percy Jackson, Julie and the Phantoms, and many, many others.
Where do you post: AO3. I tried using FanFiction.net a while back, but that site is just soooo bad.
Most popular multi-chapter fic: If you count the whole series, then we all want love/we all want honor by a long shot. If not, Between the Idea and the Reality. (My most popular non-ATLA fic, btw, is Times Are Changing.)
Most popular oneshot: Most popular stand-alone oneshot is The Bells of Kardia Cathedral. (Most popular oneshot in a series is you don't get what all this is about, of wawl/wawh.)
Favorite story you’ve written so far: Well, I'm super-obsessed with wawl/wawh, of course. I also really love The Legends Have Been Forgotten (If They Were Ever Known), the age of wizardry is over, Something Like a Love Story, and You Can Lead An Ostrich-Horse To Water.
Fic you were nervous to post: All My Love and You Can Lead An Ostrich-Horse To Water. Those are both fics I held off writing for months because I wasn't sure how they would be received. I was also a little nervous about Something Like a Love Story, because it was my first time writing a story that was so focussed on a romance.
How do you choose your titles: They usually come from a) song lyrics, or b) a line from in the story. There are times when I do get titles from other places, though.
Do you outline: Sometimes? I have a strong outline for wawl/wawh, and I've got some semi-decent ones for a handful of other fics, but usually I don't bother.
Complete: Outside of oneshots, the only really good completed fic I have right now is The Waterfall Effect.
Do you accept prompts: Yup! I'm really slow, and super picky about ships, but if you send me a character-centric and/or non-ship specific prompt, odds are that I'll get to it eventually.
Upcoming story you’re most excited to write about: I'm hard at work writing my fic for the @secrettunnelatla Big Bang. (Thanks so much to @trekkele, who has already finished two gorgeous pieces of fanart for it that I am so excited for y'all to see!) It's a story I've been planning out, working on, and teasing you guys about for nearly a year, and I am so hyped to know that I'll finally be able share it very soon. I am also working on a story for @freedjustineappreciation's Freed Day, which will be on November 17. It's shaping up to be the longest oneshot I've ever written (I'm already over 3000 words, and I've barely scratched the surface of where I want to take it), and I cannot wait to share it with the world.
Stories you’re most excited to read: I'm really loving @somanyfamdomswhy's Redemption (Fairy Tail Avengers-esque AU), @pencilofawesomeness's How to Raise Your Dragon Slayers (Papalogia AU) is so good, @catie-does-things's Fate Deferred (Aang wakes up ten years later, Zutara AU) is really interesting, @evienyx's Fractures (Zuko was imprisoned after the Agni Kai AU) has my whole heart, @izzyaro's Strange Visitors From Another Century (Harry, Ron and Hermione travel back in time to meet the Hogwarts founders) is amazing, @pigeonchest's not supposed to come home (Toph traveling with Zuko during his banishment) is one of my biggest inspirations, @knittyninja's The Truth Comes to Light (Earthbender Lu Ten AU) is soooo cool, @lynzine's Family: Lost and Found (Grandpa Aang/Roku) is adorable, @song-of-fairies's My Brother's Not Normally a Psychopath, Promise! (Natsu remembers his past AU) is a concept I wish I'd come up with myself, @awesomeavocadolove's Another Brother (Zuko is adopted into the Water Tribe AU) is incredible (no pressure about updates, love, take all the time you need!), and @mushi9's Capturing Her Damaged Heart (Fairy Tail Zombie AU) is absolutely captivating.
Tagging: Everyone I've already tagged, along with @edendaphne, @azulasragdoll, @xfangheartx, @thethiefandtheairbender, @praetorqueenreyna, @mnemosynes-elegy, @mslead, @khrushchevs-corn-farm, and anyone else interested.

F/GO High School/Modern AU BS
Me and @rex101111 have been talking about a modern/HS AU ft. as many Chaldean servants as possible. Here are the ideas we came up with (I am pretty much cut and pasting our message convo, so this is a mixture of both me and Rex's ideas):
Gil is the douchbag Senior everyone hates but his dad owns the school or whatever so he can do whatever he wants. The only decent person who willingly hangs out with him is his childhood friend Enkidu who's hoping he can un-douch his bro. He has kid Gil as his little brother and Caster Gil as his older bro who both agree that he sucks (Gil is the loser middle child of the family), Caster Gil wonders what Enkidu sees in his shit head brother. "He's too good for you." "Blow it out your ass." "One day he's going to wise up, see how much of a shit you are, and when you're all alone don't come crying to me." Caster Gil is in college studying political science, Kid Gil goes to a fancy boarding school. Archer Gil goofs off and throws parties
Scathach is a swimming class teacher, mainly b/c I recall underwater training being a part of Cu's regiment under her tutelage. People were jealous of the Cus for like two seconds when they find out the swim teacher is their mom, then they see her having them do an extra twenty laps and ignoring when OG Cu starts floating in the water. "CU DIED!" "YOU'RE NOT HUMAN!" while Scathach is like "you have two seconds to stop playing around before I ACTUALLY drown you" and he's back to doing laps.
Yeah with 4-5 Cus (if you count Setanta from Arcade) that is like 5 brothers.
Nightingale as school nurse, she is friends with Asclepius who works at a hospital associated with the school (strictly professional, but the students think otherwise).
Side note, keep in mind you can have multiple servants be the same type of teacher, just for different classes/grades.
King Hassan is the old Religious History teacher. Every one thinks he's older then the rock is the school is made out of. He has a scary face and a scarier voice but most students consider him the most fair and patient teacher in the whole school. He always gets a lot of food gifts before Ramadan form the students. (A few students, such as the Guda twins and Mash, call him gramps.) The other Hassans are his grandkids, like actual grandkids. He's super strict with them because he expects a lot from them. He always praises them when they do well though. He made sure they ALL got into his class and they've been living in fear ever since. They love their grandpa but by Allah they know not to disappoint him. The only one to ever get out of anything is kid Hassan (one of the hundred face). Cursed Arm is oldest, then Asako (the main hundred face), then Serenity.
"I am very disappointed in ALL of you, have you all lost your heads? I swear I-*to kid Hassan*-ah no Habibi not you you're fine here have a candy-*back to the rest*-I KNOW you're better than this!"
VERY traditional guy, Cursed Arm mutters "Oh for God's sake" while doing a pop quiz and King Hassan looms over him and growls, "No Blaspheming In This Class Room"
For the various Artoria/Arturias, I imagined Lancer and Lancer Alter being sisters, so Saber Alter is a cousin. That leaves everyone else to just be sisters with one brother. Mother Lartoria owns a casino and gas her own yacht in reference to the summer event where she became a Ruler. If you want MHX could be a part of the family as a massive fucking Star Wars nerd. MHXX and MHX Alter are her mom and sister (so MHXX is a third sister for the two Lancer Artorias)
For Irisviel, I remember in one of the Nero Fest things that she was called Therapist Iri. Maybe she starts to get into that b/c she wants to help her adoptive son Shirou (instead of a big fire like in Zero it can be an orphanage fire thing, similar situation but a much smaller scale) , so she is the school therapist/psychiatrist. Like Maruki in P5 Royal.
Iskandar died in his 30s, Waver is around his 30s as Lord El Melloi II. The two are old college friends who still hang out and Alexander is Iskandar’s kid.
If you guys want you can see this as the two being gay dads since I know that ship is popular.
Fran had an abusive father before Babbage and Moriarty got involved. In the og story, Frankenstien has a scientific mindset like his creator, here Fran has a talent in the field, but she also hates it b/c it reminds her of him. Like imagine being talented at the thing your abusive parent was good at/known for. Moriarty tried to get it into her that SHE'S the one with the talent, not her college dropout bum of a father, "From you tell me of him Victor couldn't engineer his way out of an argument with a cat, you have a magnificent mind my dear, not letting it flourish to spite him would be a horrible waste...it's your talent, your skill. Not his." He smiles that smile she loves that scares every one but she knows he only smiles like that when he is absolutely convinced of something, "and you can out perform him without breaking a sweat."
Moriarty teaches Fran sign language while Babbage teaches her some engineering.
Jekyll is going for a major in medicine with a minor in law (in the actual irl story Dr. Jekyll was a doctor in medicine and law).
For science associated servants, you got da Vinci, Babbage, Edison, and Tesla as possible science teachers.
The Jeanne sisters. Without the Avenger BS, the reason Jalter (or Joan as one series of fics calls her) could hate her here is just inferiority complex and being compared to her perfect saint big sister all her life. Joan does have her talents, based on the summer event an, but again she doesn't acknowledge her own talent b/c of her always being compared to her older sister., in the 7 counterfeit events she is a really good artist. And it is the typical thing of Jeanne actually being scared out of her wits of being less than perfect because of all the expectations thrust on her. She gets one A- and runs to the bathroom crying and Joan has to swallow her pride and actually have a conversation with her sister for the first time in years. Jeanne Alter lily puts up Christmas decorations super early, much to Jeanne Alter/Joan's displeasure.
"IT JUST TURNED NOVEMBER CHILL TF OUT!"
"CHRISTMAS!"
Martha is Jeanne's BF since middle school and has this HUGE dog that scares everyone and growls at anyone expect Martha and Jeanne. She calls him Terry.
Rex loves Penthesilea. and we talked at length about the situation between her and Achilles. Can you not tell that he likes a woman who can kick his ass *gestures to all of his Baiken posts*
Rex's idea: I think they had a fight when they were little and Achilles, being a little shit back then, made fun of her for being a girl, and Penth has been sore about it ever since. She keeps running into big misogynistic meatheads that reminded her of that and she just got angrier over the years. She's a wrestler and can knock out just about every dude in school by herself. Achilles is very regretful about back then and wants to apologize but Penth ain't having any of it.
My idea: I thought they were on opposing HS sports teams and when Achilles handed her ass to her he forgot to drink his respect women juice and then Penth got all pissed.
In this AU, Penth and Hippolyta's dad was a general who taught them how to kick the ass of men twice their size since they were seven or something.
Penth surprises everyone when a festival comes up and she gets picked to be the one to organize everything...and does a spectacular job. Another surprise is that she plans on being a business major when she goes to college (Obligatory Amazoness CEO jokes)
Bedivere is the Arturia Pendragon family butler with a prosthetic arm. He's also the security guard, last guy that tried to steal something or cause trouble got slapped right out of the window he sneaked in from.
Francis Drake and Artoria Alter Lancer are work friends (referencing them both being associated with the Wild Hunt in F/GO's lore).
Beni-Enma is the short and shorter tempered lunch lady, last kid who mouthed off at her during lunch got smacked upside the head with her spoon. She's sweet, but if you're in detention and have to help her in the kitchen she's a mini Gorden Ramsey, "IT'S RAW DECHI!!!" She can also come into the home EC class where Shirou is her best student. Also her roasting of the other girls like in her quest. Getting Fs in Beni's class is the worst, because it isn't just an F, it's a meticulous dressing down of exactly why letting into a kitchen should be considered a war crime, dechi.
The three Avenger Nobus are three different people. 1st Ascension is basically Archer Nobu, then you got Oda Kipposhi, and then the mom is Ascension 3 with Demon King Nobunaga. The youngest Ascension 1 Nobu is a musician. Demon King Nobu is one of those "super scary but also super polite people that only makes them scarier" type, basically a female koei Nobunaga from samurai warriors (check out some cutscenes form the games with him, he's a treat).
Imagine Demon King Nobu mom in a business suit.
Suzuka Gozen and Sei Shonagon are the textaholics who always talk in slang to the point of it sounding like they speak a different language. Murasaki is the librarian but Sei is like that ONE student who just makes her job so much harder.
Every week it's "No phones in the library Miss Shonagon." while Sei rolls her eyes and types out twitter post like "fugly ol librarian at my school needs a life lol"
Oui Katsushika is a gifted art student, and her dad (not a floating little octopus), is just a normal dude with a squid/octopus like beard. She's the teacher's pet in De Vinci's art class.
Eresh and Ishtar come from a rich family, Ereshkigal is the older sister so she had a shit load of responsibility to take over the family business while Ishtar basically gets to party her life away. Rin is the cousin they each try and swing their way. Eresh wants Rin to keep up her studies and get into a good university, Ishtar wants Rin to loosen the fuck up and admit that she likes that scrawny Emiya kid already.
BB is the host of a talk show downtown so she is kind of an absentee mom. Meltryllis has prosthetic legs that she specifically asked to be made into stilts b/c she wanted to be taller, and Passonlip has a massive rack that makes life difficult (either people staring, people assuming she's gonna be a home wrecker b/c said staring must be intentional, etc.), and of course he also has prosthetic arms to match her canon claws, obviously not as massive.
Hijikata is a very serious police officer but his wife Carmilla just uses this to have fun in the bedroom. They have two Dobermans. Hijikata's route has him patrolling near the school so most of the kids know as that scary police dude that has a picture of his wife in his pocket. One day a famous Idol called Eli-chan~ (yes spelled with the ~) is about to perform in the town and the kids can't stop talking about her, so Hijikata overhears. But, being the serious dude he is he shrugs it off until he sees a picture of this "Eli-chan~" and realizes it's his sister-in-law that came to visit and suddenly the influx of parasitic paparazzi near his house start making sense.
Carmilla: "Now you see why I hate them?", Hijikata: "No you cannot send the dogs after them honey."
She almost ran one of them over in her, very expensive, car and when that reporter says she should be locked up Hijikata corrects that would only happen if she had hit him...and she would be fined. For littering.
Okita Alter being Hijikata's partner, while Okita is her younger sister who's looked up to Hijikata since she was a little kid but she has asthma and such so she's afraid she might not get accepted.
Sigurd owns a metalworks shop (referencing his myth where he was raised by the dwarf Reginn), he met his wife Brynhildr when she was disowned by her overly controlling father.
Ozymandias, Nitocris, and Cleopatra are all the high board members of a company. Nitocris specifically got wind of Scheherazade's abusive husband situation and after getting said husband arrested, she offered Scheherazade a job.
Atalanta is a college student/TA who worked with Achilles' dad who ends up at their HS for a program or something, Achilles' dad has told him a lot about her.
Amakusa Shirou is an uncle married to the CEO of Babylon Gardens Pharmaceuticals, Semiramis. Semiramis herself is kinda chill if REALLY scary. She had to be pretty cutthroat to get to her position in the company, but Amakusa Shirou helped her mellow out, but she is still a massive tsundere.
"You know you COULD poison their lunch." "Semi, dear, I'm not going to poison my coworker's sandwich for being an ass." "It wouldn't kill them! Just a bit in their peanut better and they'll be stuck on the toilet for a week, no harm no foul."
Rex initially said Taiga would be an overly enthusiastic gym teacher but then I remembered that she was a homeroom/English teacher in Fate canon, but either or can do if you wanna be unique.
For Quetzalcoatl, Wrestling club supervisor when she isn't the senior year gym teacher. Some of the male students laughed that they didn't think a woman would know anything about wrestling. Two piledrives later, the students have earned a new appreciation for the importance on how not to be two pieces of shit. She's big on Lucha as in canon and during Halloween she gets JAGUARMAN to have an exhibition fight with her. They make a show of it but later on Taiga admits that Quatz could have CRUSHED her if they were actually fighting. She takes the wrestling club out for homemade Mexican food after tournaments
For Siduri, there's a bunch of rumors she's dating Caster Gil but it's strictly professional, Caster respects her too much to consider that. Archer Gil hits on her relentlessly, she manages to wound his ego more severely then anyone else simply by being unfailingly polite in her rejections and treating him like what he is, a teenage punk jumping higher than he can handle to land.
Ibaraki is Shuten's adoptive little sister after she was taken from an abusive mother, hence why Ibaraki looks up to her. Ibuki is either Shuten's big sister who had to take on a guardian role, or just her mom. Shuten and Ibuki have a bit of a strained relationship because Shuten saw the way Ibuki acted as they grew up, taking more and more responsibilities onto herself and refusing any distractions. And she decided that her biggest nightmare is to wake up one morning and realize she's turned into Ibuki so she tries to do everything to avoid that, hence their relationship not being the best. Ibaraki is kinda stuck in the middle because she wants to side with Shuten but she sees where Ibuki is coming from. Messy.
Caren is still Kotomine’s daughter, but he isn’t a good dad and in rebellion she sleeps around despite being a woman of god. Including sleeping with local punk Angra Mainyu. Angra Mainyu seems like a bad guy but he has a shit load of issues due to being blamed for everything going wrong in his old town, eventually coming to believe them and thinking he will cause nothing but problems. Caren banging him gives him a type of closeness he’s never felt, but under very warped circumstances.
For the Tamamo family, Vitch totally fucked her way up a corporate ladder or something, imagined Tamamo Cat working at a Cat Cafe if she were a Student. Tamamo no Mae accidentally fed her prev BF a food he was allergic too, and that kind of haunted her and scared her rep. IDK basically she seriously fucked up a previous relationship, either on purpose or accidentally, and that kind of hurts her deeply so she wants to start over with Hakuno.
Nero and Tamamo no Mae are rivals over this one guy.
Kiichi Hougen is the adoptive mom, Benkei is the family friend/uncle, Taira is Ushiwaka's older sister. Taira isn't on the best of terms with her family, some drama way back caused a rift and nowadays Ushi is the only one who's willing to talk to her and visit. Benkei never lets her go alone because he doesn't trust Taira one bit. Taira and Ushiwaka are Kintoki and Tomoe's cousins (I say Tomoe b/c apparently her husband and Ushiwaka were half cousins, with their grandpa having kids with their grandmas. I tried to make a whole family tree out of a few servants).
These are the ideas we had the most to talk about, if you guys have any suggestions for your fav servants in this AU, let either me or Rex know. Or just reblog and say them here. Who knows maybe you have a much better idea for a Servant we already mentioned.

Gone with the wind.
If you’re looking for the original, may we suggest the 1939 classic film based on the book? You can check it out on Amazon Prime! The book clocks in at an impressive 2.5 pounds, 1048 pages, and 418,053 words.
Know what else is super long and really readable? Dr. B, Medicine Woman over on AO3. This fic is a fandom cult classic, is currently a touch under Margaret Mitchell’s tome (but with a word count of 352,902), and has a massive following, and @crossingwithstyle is gearing up to finish it off soon! Now’s a great time to get caught up.

Twelve years and their relationship has been a blurry line of you are the most important person in my life with we don’t speak about what how we really feel. (Suits, 2011-present)
Double Agent  by erinmangerer
Two of my favorite fandoms collide- the story of Alias told with the characters of Outlander! Claire Beauchamp's life is full of secrets. When one decision crumbles her world around her, she must lean on old relationships and new allies to find justice and reclaim her life. (Alias, 2001-2006)
His Girl by @listentothewordsyousay
Based on the BBC show Our Girl (2013-Present)
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
Chapter 4
Chapter 5
Chapter 6
Chapter 7
Chapter 8
Chapter 9
Chapter 10
Chapter 11
Two Hearts of Stone by rebeccasbunch
AU that takes place after Outlander 410 and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend 411. Roger MacKenzie goes through the standing stones and ends up in West Covina, California, where he befriends Nathaniel Plimpton III.  (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend 2015-present)
I'll be there for you by  sassenachwaffles @sassenachwaffles
I knew I was in trouble when he moved in. I had known somewhere deep inside, that sharing an apartment with Jamie Fraser was going to be a problem. But, I had needed the help to pay the rent and he was the only suitable person who met my obscene standards.
He was clean, respectful, and didn’t mind my coming and going at odd hours. He was a hard worker, Adso loved him, and all the references on his application had stellar reviews about him. He was also extremely charming and good-looking. I had started to fall for him the moment he came over for a tour of the apartment, though, I hadn’t wanted to admit it to anyone- let alone myself.
The problem was, I was with Frank, and he had a girlfriend—But Jamie Fraser was my best friend, and that was all.  (New Girl 2011-2018)
Dr. B, Medicine Woman by CrossingInStyle @crossinginstyle
Claire Beauchamp is trying to make her way as a woman doctor in the 19th century. After the death of her uncle and only supporter, she decides to risk everything to travel to a small frontier town in Colorado in need of a doctor. There, she meets Mac, a mysterious, quiet man who lives among the Cheyenne, and becomes a sudden mother to three orphaned children.
Yes, it's Dr. Quinn/Outlander remix! (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman 1992-1998)
The Writer Who Loved Me by @sassenachwriter
The concept was inspired by the tv show/book series Castle. If you’ve watch Castle, don’t expect too much references. Only the basic story was inspired by it: Jamie is a journalist and follows Claire around (who in that case is a doctor, not a cop) to write his article. (Castle 2009-2016)
Outlander Forever by Kazroo
While not a cross-over in the strict sense of the meaning, I have appropriated several plot devices from both the current show about immortals, Forever, and another earlier show about an immortal, New Amsterdam (which starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) that I actually preferred the back-story for, and pulled them into a purely Outlander character-scape. The Outlander references are a mix of the books and the TV series, so don't jump down my throat on date differences!
Simply put, Jamie Fraser is immortal, and his path is about to cross once again with Claire, and Brianna, the daughter he has never had the chance to meet. Picking up where Dragonfly in Amber left off, what happens if Claire can't go back, but Jamie never dies? (Forever 2014-2015)
Unearthed by  @jewelsbrooke, @livinginafanficworld
An invitation from the Forensic Anthropology Society of Europe sets Claire Beauchamp on an exciting path of murder, mystery, and intrigue. Little does Claire know, bones aren’t the only things being unearthed in Edinburgh, Scotland. (Bones 2005-2017)
Scotham by @bonnie-wee-swordsman
Prompt: “Perhaps something Christmas themed? Or an AU where Jamie and Claire are a badass crime-fighting duo, taking on the criminal red coat gang in the seedy underbelly of the city…sorry, mind got away from me there :P” (Gotham 2014-Present)
New Life by Nikki_Herzog
Claire Beauchamp arrives to her new job as a nurse at the Scottish Helicopter Ambulance Service, where she meets helicopter pilot Jamie. (Medicopter 117, 1998-2007)
COVERT OPERATIONS by @sablelab
The most covert of all antiterrorist organizations, wages war against those who would destroy … or at the very least reorder… society. Its adversaries, who have remained beyond the reach of normal police and intelligence agencies, are many, and they are ruthless, and so Section resorts to measures that would be unacceptable for most government organizations. For this reason, Section jealously guards its anonymity. It recruits criminals and killers and gives them a choice: death or life as a Section operative. It’s usually a rather short life for operatives are expendable, and losses are high, but then so are the stakes in a global power struggle against sinister terrorist organizations such as the Triad group called ‘The Rising Dragons’. (La Femme Nikita 1997-2001)

Here’s my first Bechloe fanfic. It’s been a while since I’ve written anything so I’m a bit rusty. Because of that, there’s bound to be mistakes. Be gentle with me, please? Okay, I’m done rambling. Enjoy, nerds!
The room is dark, still, as though she‘s the only one here. But she knows she isn’t. The rest of the Bellas are looking for her, hoping to take a shot at their captain. All of her senses are on high alert as she navigates the iridescent maze in front of her.
Beca wouldn’t be in this situation, or stupid getup for that matter, if it wasn’t for a certain redhead and her need for more team bonding. They literally just got back from the retreat four days ago. How much more bonding do they possibly need?!
Goddamnit, Chloe, Beca thinks to herself, taking a cautious step to her left before ducking down behind a massive pillar. Why laser tag?
The bonding exercise had started out relatively well and, actually, kinda fun. Something that surprised the short brunette.
It’s also something that didn’t last very long.
What was once a 5 vs. 5 battle is now the Bellas vs. Beca. Which is why she now finds herself scared shitless in a corner with bulky laser tag gear on and a whole lotta Bellas closing in on her.
A creak to her right her forces her to spin around, gun raised, eyes frantically searching for their target. But there’s nothing there. More importantly, there’s no one. She takes a steadying breath, attempting to calm her pounding heart.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
She should’ve never agreed to this. But when Chloe has an idea, there’s no stopping her. Especially when she gives Beca the big ‘ol puppy eyes with those baby blues of hers.
She could never say no to Chloe.
Her eyes dart to her left then to her right and back again, watching for any signs of the Bellas. Still nothing. Not a peep.
How are they able to be fucking ghosts now, but they’re loud as all hell at 2 in the morning?! She thinks.
Footsteps and small giggle just to her left grab Beca’s attention. She’d know who that was anywhere.
Chloe.
Her lips curve upwards in a mischievous smirk. The fear she felt just a few seconds ago is gone, vanishing in an instant, and in its place is pure hunger. With a new surge of confidence, Beca leaves the comfort of her hiding spot and steps out into the open. A flash of neon red immediately catches her eye. So she follows it.
The smile never leaves her face as she inches closer and closer to her co-captain. As soon as Beca is in reach of Chloe, she does what any normal person would do during a game of laser tag... she pounces.
“Gotcha!”
Before Chloe can let out a squeal of surprise, she feels the weight of Beca at her back and a hand flies to her mouth, silencing her. Beca flips the redhead around so she faces her, then gently backs Chloe into a small opening, hand still on her mouth.
“Thought you could sneak up on me, huh? Well, give me your best shot, Beale,” Beca says in a low, intimidating voice, face mere inches from Chloe’s. She drops her hand from Chloe’s mouth to her upper arm, and waits for a response.
“Becs, it wasn’t me,” Chloe whispers. “Amy corralled the girls together and pitted them all against us. I’ve been trying to find you.”
“Wait. Are you — You mean I’ve been hiding like a coward this entire time when we could’ve been cowards together?”
Chloe scrunches her face in guilt. “Yeah... Sorry.”
“I’ve been scared out of mind, Chlo! We need to make a plan. Like now.” Chloe nods in agreement. “But what? At this point we’re probably surrounded.”
Beca grumbles a quick “shit” while glancing behind her to make sure they’re still alone. Beca turns back to Chloe, but what sight awaits her makes her stomach drop. Uh oh.
“What are you...?”
A bright red flash and a high-pitched sound come from Beca’s vest. She releases Chloe, mouth open, eyes wide with betrayal.
“You just shot me,” she gasps, looking down at her blinking vest before turning her gaze back up. “I-I don’t... um, what just happened?”
“You just got played!” Chloe cheers, arms raised in the air in victory.
Beca simply stares at the woman before her. “I — wh-what...l,” she stutters, searching for the right words but not finding any.
The smug, yet adorable, redhead before her is beaming. “Consider this payback.“
“Payback?! For what? What’d I’d do?”
With a shit-eating grin on her lips, Chloe takes a few steps forward so she’s now toe-to-toe with the brunette. She doesn’t speak right away, letting the silence wash over them as she sees the realization hit in Beca’s eyes when she figures it out. And it only makes Chloe smile that much more.
“You set all of this up as a way to get back at me for not telling you about the internship? Are you kidding me?!” Beca’s starting to get upset, and a bit pissed off if she’s being honest. “Dude, we literally talked about this less than a week ago. I thought things were cool?”
Chloe nods. “Oh, they are. I just wanted to give you a little taste of your own medicine.”
Beca rolls her eyes and doesn’t say anything as she begins to pace back and forth.
“Are you mad at me?” Chloe asks after what felt like minutes of grueling silence, when, in reality, it had only been like 10 seconds.
When Beca still doesn’t respond, Chloe shortens the distance between the two of them once again and tilts her head to the side to get the pouting woman to look at her.
“Hey,” the redhead says in a soft voice. “Look, I’m sorry I made you feel bad about the internship, and for putting you through all of this laser tag-team bonding stuff. I know it’s not your thing, and I’m sorry.” Chloe takes a deep breath, “Can... can we just call it even?” More silence greets her. “Please? Come on, don’t make me beg.”
When Beca’s blue eyes meet Chloe’s, she rewarded with a pretty adorable sight — Chloe’s got her bottom lip sticking out, eyes wide, in her best pouty face. It makes Beca laugh.
“There it is. There’s that beautiful smile,” Chloe beams, clasping their hands with a single squeeze. “Forgive me?”
Beca nods with a sigh. “Only if you forgive me.”
“Deal!” She then brings her friend into a hug.
Beca smiles into the other woman’s shoulder, not ready to let go just yet. “And hey, thank you for this. It was ridiculous and I will never do it again. But ... thanks. I needed it more than I thought.”
The two pull apart, hands clasped together.
“Great way to relieve stress, huh?”Chloe asks, giving Beca’s hands a squeeze.
“It, uh, definitely helped me forget about the damn internship and worlds. But no. How was any of this not stressful? I’ve been running for my life for the last, oh — 50 minutes, while you and Amy and everybody hunted me down like a friggin’ dog.”
Chloe merely laughs at her friend’s dramatics. “Okay, A) we’ve only been playing for 15 minutes, you big baby. B) the girls all left about 10 minutes ago, so it’s just been the two of us in here. And C) just admit you had fun!”
She gives Beca a poke in the side for good measure. Then continues to do so until Beca caves.
“Okay, okay. If I admit it, what do I get in return?”
It’s meant to be playful and lighthearted, but oh, how the mood quickly shifts.
Chloe smirks, all smug and serious, and it makes Beca immediately regret asking the question. Her heart begins beating faster and louder in her chest as the distance becomes basically non-existent between the two of them.
The air is thick, making it harder for Beca to breathe. She audibly gulps, watching with wide eyes as Chloe takes agonizing step by step until they’re chest-to-chest.
The bulky laser tag gear clanks at the contact, but neither woman is paying any attention to that.
No. Their sole focus is on each other, and more specifically, on each other’s mouths.
Chloe slowly, oh so slowly, brings her face right up to Beca’s, and smirks inwardly as she feels the younger woman tense up. Her mouth is now at Beca’s ear, and the hot air from her breath sends tingles down her spine.
Finally, finally, Chloe talks.
“Oh, Mitchell. I’m not sure you’d be able to handle it if you tried.” Well, fuck, Beca thinks. As soon as Chloe pulls back, Beca’s hands fly up and hold her still. “Wait,” she breathes.
Now it’s Chloe’s turn to freeze.
“Try me,” Beca says, doing her best to keep her voice as level as possible.
It’s all the invitation Chloe needs, and soon, their mouths are pressed together, moving and dancing as they kiss for the first time.
Beca kisses Chloe back with all of the want and lust that’s coursing through her veins. Her hands grip the other woman’s hips in a vice lock, tugging her closer – like that was even possible.
They eventually pull apart, both breathless as they open their eyes and stare at one another in amazement.
Holy shit.
Beca feels her mouth curving upward in a smile that matches Chloe’s. It’s takes her a moment to get her heart rate under control, but then she says, “Okay, I’ll admit that that was fun... I’m still a little iffy on the whole laser tag part though.”
Her comment makes Chloe laugh. “You’re impossible,” she chuckles.
Beca, feeling bold, yanks Chloe back to her and whispers in her ear, “Am I? Why don’t you prove me wrong then, Beale?”
Beca plants a brief kiss on her lips then walks away, leaving a flustered Chloe behind. Only, she doesn’t get very far because her vest suddenly flashes, signaling she’s been shot... again.
Son of a–
Turning in a whirlwind, she finds that Chloe is no longer there. “It’s so on! You’re gonna regret that, Chlo!”
“I highly doubt that!” She hears somewhere in the maze, only to be followed by, “You just gonna stand there, or are you gonna come find me?”
“Oh, I’m gonna do so much more than that,” she calls back, tightly gripping the plastic gun as she sets off in search of the feisty, hot redhead.
Maybe laser tag wasn’t so bad after all...
Annnd there you have it, folks. Like I said before, this was the first time I’ve written a fic in a very long time -- I’m talking years here -- so go easy on me.
Much love, DR-JB

My take that no one asked for:
2 - I think that at this point it's probably safe to say that it doesn't matter what the topic is, when you are in fandom, especially as a creator, things that should be discussed will inevitably get turned into fandom policing. So I feel like discussing a topic and fandom policing should always be categorized as 2 different things even though you can't have one without the other. Some people want to chat, some people want to fight and bully others. We're all attending the same very large schoolyard and we'll all see the same bs to varying degrees depending on where we stand.
3 - it's nobodies job to educate others via fandom. If I see someone stabbing someone else in the stomach I don't have to share my knowledge on anatomy and stab wounds to know it's a bad thing and should be called out. If I share that information then that is my perogative....and will lend credence to my argument that stabbing someone is not good. You know what I mean? If we all had to write an essay every time we were uncomfortable a lot of people wouldn't say a whole lot.
4 - I too have seen it. And I am not a gay man but that shits gross and dehumanizing and to me is a marker of an inexperienced writer. The Top/bottom = man/woman stereotype thing aggravates me so much for so many different reasons that I cannot deal.
5 - A: not all fanfic is written by women so let's take a second to get off our bs about that. B: I do not believe that a person's gender makes them incapable of writing something about the opposite gender. This isn't Hollywood.
What I do believe is that it is your experience, understanding of Sex ed and commitment to improving your writing that determines how often these tropes get used. Ao3 is the writing club of the aforementioned schoolyard and there is no limit on who can join. I fandom hop a LOT and I have found that the fics with the most negative m/m tropes seem to be geared more towards young adults/teens. Such as Dr Who and Dragon Age and...I legitimately cannot think of any other examples atm because I hop out of them real quick tbh. I think the appearance of tropes in those fandoms is indicative of an audience that hasn't explored the sexual mechanics of m/m ships apart from watching porn or reading porn. Which isn't a good learning ground and writers know that it isn't as easy as reading well crafted porn and then writing well crafted porn. Hell sometimes you can read a fic and it's very apparent the author has never even kissed someone much less touched a penis. (tongue wars for dominance in fic is just...everywhere. it's like dandruff). Sometimes in those fandoms there is a standout piece of great fiction but that's a testament to the writers abilities imo. (I say this as a person who wrote dragon age fanfic with lotsa porn when I was 20. It's bad.)
In the same vein when a fic just skips over lube It tends to shoot me out of the story so fast I get whiplash (People should be tearing their foreskin a lot more in the fics is all I'm sayin). Or when people are like "nooo it hurts, I just gotta deal with the pain and then it'll get good" like...no. no. You do not. Regardless of genitals if it hurts to have sex then stop and relube or restretch or what have you.
6 - I think there can be a suspension of disbelief in certain cases and to a certain extent. (Before I wrote my star wars fic at 26 I did a lot of research into how gay sex works with my limited resources. Aka the Internet. I was on forums and drew from my own experience. Still managed to pass over dental dams and parasites ngl.)
A great fictional fantasy story is great because of its realistic parts. The realistic parts prevent it from reading as childlike or too perfect. Realism compliments the fantasy. If you are writing in a futuristic world like Star Wars or Star Trek or Mass Effect then maybe you can skip the safe sex practices and condoms and the like under the guise of advanced medicine (preferably imo with an acknowledgment somewhere either in text or as a note that stds and sti's are no longer a thing. Although now I'm thinking of like. Holographic condoms and that sounds interesting to put in a story) but stretching is still a thing and it will make it all more realistic. Because even if you have no condoms you still gotta stretch or be ready for a dong. Especially these monstrous sized things some of you come up with. (...Holographic donuts for monster cocks :o). Or if it's an old period fic use like. Oil. Or butter. Or something. Look up what slick substances were available and use those. Idk
If you are writing a modern day au then yeah. You should add stuff like condoms and lube and prep time. We're not 10 cent romance novels where everybody is beautiful and wet and everything is perfect. In the past half a decade ya'll have really gotten into analingus so like. Take a second to think and wonder about the mechanics of that, look it up and then add it in your writing.
And as was already said about the whole top/bottom stereotype. Stop it. It's boring and as a woman I am offended because it implies that I am being submissive by being penetrated so I can't even imagine what it's like to gay men reading it. Just. Stop that. Plz.
7 - the impact of fanfic is tiny but it hurts lots of people in many ways. To pretend otherwise is to be willfully ignorant. (Although this is where the age gaps become floppy. I don't expect a 14 yr old to have the same awareness of their impact as a 24 year old would. And I don't expect a 24 yr old to understand it like a 34 year old should. At some point the awareness of your impact on not just people you know but in your online presence shifts from being 'not a thing' to being an 'oh. People are listening to me.' And it's at different ages for different people. So. Floppy) but as I've been saying for ages on my blog of you feel you can't write because you are scared people will ask you to write a certain thing a certain way then that's a you problem, and something that could mostly be avoided by not opening asks up or filling requests. (I'm aware this isn't the main complaint sorry if I sound like a douche)
As for it being annoying that a fandom you want to be a part of is filled with that trope....that's also kind of a you problem and is a huge drawback of our schoolyard. There are several fandoms I want to be a part of but are just porn. It's even well written porn. But it's just porn. And I want stories damn it! And I could contribute and maybe fix that a little bit but nah. I'd rather come on tumblr and write an essay in response to a post about a topic that doesn't really have anything to do with me.
Ultimately I think the trope thing is here to stay and that people will learn as they write that those tropes suck. I think it is a byproduct of being new to writing but not to reading. And I understand why people become defensive about people discussing how pointing out the bad in those tropes can scare away new writers but.... a writer needs to work passed that. If you crumble at every negative thing you see when it's not even directed at you then I think the young writer is looking for a reason or excuse not to write.
And I think the extreme bullying that some authors receive is rare enough that shutting down the discussion is redundant.
In conclusion, to any new writers out there please remember:
Writing is fun, be creative. Tropes aren't rules
Enjoying m/m fic isn't automatically fetishising. But I, a queer man, don't feel comfortable reading most m/m fic because the chances of gross tropes being used or mischaracterisation to make the pairing fit the Classic m/m Dynamic is just too high :/ it's things like vilifying/killing women so that they can get together, mischaracterising women so that you have a lens to use as a voyeur ('cause it's the *character* watching them fuck), the weird focus on who tops... not a fun place to be gay in
Also it’s not about gay men but tumblr user thedeadflag has *really* solid commentary on the fetishisation of trans women in fanfic, esp girl!penis and a/b/o fics. Definitely worth a read if you want to know more about what constitutes fetshising and what doesn’t
Oof. Yeah, those tropes sound like the opposite of fun. Ugh.
thanks for the resource! (and I hope you can find some good fic in amongst the rest)

Untitled M*A*S*H fic for Caitallolovesyou
These three chapters are all I have so far but I hope they give you a smile. (And that I don’t end up taking too long to write the second half!) Since I teased you with it I didn't want to keep you waiting.  *hugs*
Set post-series. Features Charles and Hawkeye, plus a couple of family members.
Chapter One
She watched him, studied him, growing more concerned for him with each passing day.  Mother and Father seemed to notice nothing, but then, when did they ever so long as their children were behaving in a proper manner and not causing any sort of scandal?
But Honoria Winchester was not so blind as they when it came to her beloved brother.
Charles had been different since Korea. Quieter, more introspective, less inclined toward the bluster and bombast with which he armored himself against the world. And he never listened to his music anymore. That alone was cause for concern. Charles had been in love with the classics; Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and particularly Mozart, since he was in short pants. Medicine was his particular genius, his profession and he had worked hard to refine his knowledge and technique until he was rightly regarded as one of the finest surgeons on the east coast; but music had always been his passion.
Since his return, however, neither work nor play seemed to give him satisfaction. The music, in fact, seemed to cause only pain.  Their parents had treated the entire family to an evening at the symphony a month after Charles returned to Boston, intending to celebrate his safe return, but instead of enjoying the performance, his features had been set in a stiff expression all evening that could have passed as a calm smile if one did not question it too closely, but which appeared to Honoria to be more of a pained grimace.
She had assumed that he needed time to adjust to being back in the civilized world. That he would be fine once he’d had an opportunity to adjust to his new position as Chief of Thoracic surgery at Boston Mercy hospital. Charles had always been a strong believer in the benefits of a healthy work and leisure balance, devoting full attention to whichever he was engaged in at any given time. However, the latter occupation seemed to have disappeared entirely.  Golf games and cricket matches with colleagues slowly disappeared from his schedule.  Gourmet dinners, formerly one of the highlights of his existence, seemed to give him indigestion and had given way to plain fare.  Evenings at the ballet or opera became increasingly rare. And he formed no attachments at all.
It had been nearly a year and Charles had become obsessed with his practice to the point that he rarely seemed to leave the hospital. Her brother was gone when Honoria rose in the morning, and back home long after she had retired for the night.  He was using duty as an excuse to avoid seeing friends and family. When she had last seen him, a week ago, Honoria had been startled by the haggard look of him. Oh, he was tidy enough; immaculately dressed and properly groomed, but he looked as though he had not slept in weeks. He had also begun noticeably losing weight, suggesting that he did not eat as often or as healthily as he ought, and his formerly ruddy complexion was now unhealthily pale. He had clearly given up on his lifelong habit of a brisk sixty-minute constitutional at mid-day, to refresh him in body and mind.
Sensing that the time to intervene had arrived, Honoria tried cornering him and talking to him, but he was a master at putting off conversations he did not wish to have. However, if he thought he was going to hide in his duty and be able to avoid her forever, Charles Emerson Winchester had another think coming to him!
Quietly, clandestinely, Honoria slipped into her brother’s office at Boston Mercy and spoke with his secretary. She arranged for a two-week vacation, confirming her suspicions that he had already racked up enough hours on shift just in the past six months to have earned twice that amount of holiday time. Madeline even expressed relief, telling her (“Not that I would ever gossip about our doctors, you understand, but…”) that Charles’ colleagues had been after him to take some time before he ended up on the wrong side of the surgical table.
That, though likely exaggerated a trifle, steeled Honoria’s resolve. Come Monday, her brother was taking a break. Whether he wanted one or not.
  ~*~*~*~*~
“A vacation? My dear girl, I cannot possibly be spared for an entire week! There are patients, board meetings, a veritable plethora of duties which cannot possibly . . .”
 “Two,” she interrupted calmly.
Charles spluttered to a halt. “Excuse me?”
“Two weeks.  It’s all ar-r-ranged, Charles darling,” she said, taking a sip of tea and flashing her most pleasant smile at him. “T-two weeks in the c-c-country. You are taking what I believe is called a r-r-road-trip in the common p-parlance. Your colleagues w-w-were delighted to be rid of you. P-perfectly happy to c-c-cover for your absence. M-m-madeline was q-quite efficient about arranging things.”
He gaped at her. “Madeline conspired with you on this?  The two of you went behind my back? The cheek! The treachery! The gall!  I’ll have her sacked at once!”
She smiled even more brightly. “You won’t. In f-f-fact, I believe you sh-should consider a raise. J-just for putting up with you and your t-t-temper.”
“My temper is perfectly fine!” he blasted, defying the statement with his own volume. He seemed to realize this and turned to pacing about the room instead. His voice was quieter but no less irritated when he continued, “This is absurd. I will not be herded along toward some idyllic pasture like a stupid sheep. I have duties, responsibilities, commitments you cannot possibly understand!”
Charles continued on in this vein for several more minutes. He fretted and grumbled, not seeming to notice that he was receiving no counter argument until he abruptly ran out of steam and sat down in the chair across from his sister, fuming but silent.  Exactly as she had known that he would do if she remained patient.
Honoria got up, setting her teacup aside and crossed to perch lightly on her brother’s knee, wrapping her arms around his neck and resting her temple against his, just as she had done when they were children and she was the one in need of comforting. Charles’ arms came around her waist, relaxing against his will as he responded automatically to the familiar gesture.
“I’m w-worried for you, my Chuck,” she said softly, using the childhood nickname that nobody else on earth was allowed. “You aren’t w-w-well. You haven’t been yourself since the w-w-war, and I don’t think you will be until you t-t-talk to someone. I’ve arranged for that as w-w-well.”
His lips primmed in distaste. “You know I don’t believe in that psychological twaddle,” he said, his tone noticeably less annoyed than it had been before. “I’m fine.”
  “You’re not, and that isn’t w-w-what I m-meant.”
Charles pulled his head back to look up into her face. “Not a doctor, then?”
“Oh, yes. A d-d-doctor,” she said with a laugh. “J-just not that sort.”
Charles struggled to maintain his disapproving air, but failed to resist her coaxing smile. Honoria had always known how to manage her big brother. His eyes narrowed curiously. “Where have you got up your sleeve?”
“F-f-father is allowing you to b-borrow the Duesenberg,” she told him.
A smile quirked his lips. “Is he aware of this generous act?”
She batted her lashes innocently. “I’ll tell him . . . ev-ventually. Perhaps at the w-w-weekend.”
Charles laughed in spite of himself. “You are a cheeky girl. I suppose I’m expected to drive to the scene of my own kidnapping?”
“Of course,” she said. “D-d-driving is quite relaxing, I’m told. And the early s-summer s-s-scenery is lovely in M-maine. P-particularly the c-c-coastal towns.”
Now he just looked confused. “Maine. What could anyone possibly find to do for two weeks in Maine? It isn’t as though we know anyone . . .” When she continued to smile expectantly at him, Charles suddenly put the clues together.  He wagged his finger scoldingly under her nose. “Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no!  My dear young woman, you cannot possibly be suggesting that I go to Crabapple Cove.”
“I am, and you are,” she said succinctly. “You m-m-may think I paid no attention to your l-l-letters, brother dear, but I assure you that I d-did.  You spoke more often and more f-fondly of Captains P-pierce and H-h-hunnicutt than you probably knew. I b-b-believe it would do you good to s-s-spend time with someone to whom you do not have to exp-p-plain your ongoing d-difficulties.”
“What difficulties?” he grumbled, wary but unable to avoid her now that she was so close and so openly concerned with helping him. “I’m perfectly sound.”
Honoria stroked her thumb over his cheek, not nearly as round and rosy as it should have been, then traced one of the shadowy bags underneath his eyes. “Are you?” she said gently. “You c-came home, but n-n-not all of you returned from that place. Did it?”
Finding himself unable to lie to her face, Charles attempted to avoid her probing gaze, ducking his head against her chest to hide his expression. He shook his head, not willing to risk his voice trembling.
“I c-can’t understand. Not entirely,” she said, stroking the hair over his ear. It was getting too long again. “B-b-but I think your friend may.  I s-s-stayed in touch with the elder Doctor P-p-pierce after our f-f-family reunion. He’s kind; v-very sweet, once one m-m-moves past the endless b-b-bad jokes. From your letters, I s-s-suspect the son is m-much the same.” She had met and become friendly with the families of many of Charles’ colleagues and camp-mates during an event dreamed up by Dr. Hunnicutt and arranged by his wife Peg.
Charles cleared his throat and said quietly, “He is. Hawkeye Pierce could try the patience of a saint with his endless buffoonery, but . . . he is a good man, and an excellent physician. I actually learned a great deal from him.”
Honoria smiled, knowing that for Charles there could be no finer compliment. “There’s a w-weekend medical conference in M-m-manchester. It ap-p-pears to be roughly an hour from their h-h-home.”
“So I may as well drop by while I’m in the neighborhood, eh?” he said, eyes beginning to twinkle as he caught on to the spirit of her plan. Honoria had known that he would handle this better if he had a legitimate excuse to make the trip. “Well, I suppose it might be good to get away for a few days at that. Weather conditions should be ideal for a spot of fishing, and it wouldn’t do to be rude.”
Honoria kissed him on the forehead. “Thank you, Charles. S-sinclair will bring the car around f-f-for you at seven.”
Charles raised an eyebrow. “And I suppose my bags are already packed for me too.”
Hopping up from his lap, she smiled. “See you at b-b-breakfast?”
Rising to his feet, Charles looked down into her face. “I suppose you think you’re very clever, don’t you?”
“If I g-g-get my Chuck back, I w-w-will consider myself very c-c-clever indeed. And very blessed.”
As she left the room, Honoria heard her brother mutter, “No child, it is I who am blessed.”
 Chapter Two
The medical conference, if one could call it that, was an utter waste of time. The special topic of the gathering was advances in podiatry. Hardly something Charles found worth a three and a half hour drive north.
Still, the journey had been scenic, the climate warm, with a gentle breeze that had coaxed him to roll his window down and breathe in the pleasantly fresh  air. He could not deny that it felt good to relax.  Perhaps he had been working too hard at that. To go somewhere new and allow his activities to go unscheduled for a change felt good.  His sister would be unbearably pleased with herself if he were to admit that she had been right, but that was a price he just might be willing to pay.
Particularly if she proved equally prescient about his upcoming visit to the shore.
Charles could not deny that he was nervous about seeing his old camp colleague. He had grown fond of many of the people with whom he had endured the hellish conditions of Korea; Colonel Potter, BJ and Hawkeye, Margaret, Father Mulcahey, and even that rapscallion of a Maxwell Klinger; but since the war, he had not spoken with any of them. In fact, he had done his best to avoid even thinking of that time, or anyone connected to it. He had wanted to believe that he could simply return to the life he had previously enjoyed, and put all of that dreadful business behind him.
Unfortunately, reality had proved somewhat less accommodating than his daydreams. So long as he worked, he could center his concentration on that, and only that. Not unlike the marathon sessions of meatball surgery performed in that far away M.A.S.H. tent, where only the utter refusal to think of anything but the instruments and delicate tissues beneath one’s hands could get a person through the endless hours.
No, it was his time away from the surgical table that frequently proved his undoing.  It was impossible to sit quietly enjoying a drink, or a game of cribbage, or a concert somewhere, and pretend that he did not feel guilty for his very leisure. For being alive, healthy and well-off, living a beautifully civilized existence when so many others had not received that same gift.
How many young men, just boys most of them, had failed to returned to their homes and their own beloved pass-times because there had simply not been time, or advanced enough equipment to save their lives? Because a different patient with a slightly better life expectancy had been deemed more able to benefit from their limited resources, leaving the doctors with the grim choice to save as many as they could in the time allotted, and leave others to die?
They haunted him, those boys. The soldiers, the civilians, the many prisoners of war whose lives and future contributions to their society had been destroyed by a damned ‘conflict’ that never should have touched them at all. Like that quintet of Chinese musicians whose bloody faces he still saw whenever he heard the beautiful strains of Mozart. Their faces and the sound of their poor but lovingly played instruments lived on in his dreams. They shamed him with their talent, and hope, and the endless joie de vivre that had driven them to embrace beauty in the midst of horror. Had enabled him to feel a little bit of normalcy in the midst of chaos.
Right up until the day that they had died.
Charles closed his eyes and swallowed, determined not to allow his thoughts to wander down that unforgiving path yet again. He was supposed to be taking a holiday, and he deserved a good one, damn it all!
“Doctor Winchester?” a voice said from off to his left.
Charles opened his eyes, startled by the familiarity of that voice. He turned, mouth already half open to greet his old ‘swamp’ mate, when he instead found himself facing an older gentleman wearing dark slacks and a shapeless yellow sweater with patches at the elbows. “Oh, er, yes? Yes, I’m Winchester.”
The man smiled brightly and rushed forward to shake Charles’ hand, behaving for all the world as if he were greeting a long lost friend.  “I knew it had to be you as soon as Dr. Wickshaw started his lecture and I spotted that long-suffering expression on your face. My son described you to a T!”
That was why this fellow looked so familiar. His crinkled blue eyes, long ski nose, and the voice were a dead ringer for, “Doctor Pierce, of course!” Charles shook the old man’s hand cordially in both of his own, determined to display his finest manners to combat whatever impression the son might have given. “It’s a sincere pleasure to meet you, sir.  Your son spoke of you a great deal as well. My sister informed me that you would be open to a guest, but I hope she wasn’t taking advantage, or bringing you too far out of your way.”
Doctor Pierce dismissed the idea with a quiet ‘pshaw’ and a wave of his hand. “Glad to have you, son. And call me Dan. Any friend of Hawkeye is a friend of mine. He’d have come with me, but Rosie Maynard decided it was time to have her baby this morning, so I came on ahead.  The good thing about retirement is that there’s never a bad time to take a day off.” He grinned, his eyes sparkling with fun. “Now, what do you say we scram before one of these doctors catches on that we don’t belong? Wouldn’t do to get off on the wrong foot with these fellas!”
He cackled at his own joke and Charles politely offered a wan smile. Oh, yes. This man was definitely a Pierce.  “Indeed.  My car is in the rear parking area. Will I just follow you back to your place?”
The gray-haired man’s eyes danced. “Only if you want to drive at an old man’s walking pace.” He laughed. “And that would be one hell of a walk for me!  No, my neighbor was coming out this way to see his daughter. I just hitched a ride with him, since I knew you’d be driving. Figured you might like someone to show you the sights.”
Surprised but not displeased at the idea of an on board navigator, particularly as he found himself unexpectedly liking the man, Charles nodded. “I hadn’t expected such forethought, but that is an excellent suggestion.”
Doctor Pierce did not seem to take offense at his inference that thinking ahead did not necessarily run in the family. He simply chatted along in an amiable fashion about whatever came into his head as they walked outside. Then, “Oh, my.” He rushed forward to take a better look at their ride, circling the car like a treasure-hunter finding a lost tomb. “This is fine.  Just fine!  How’d you ever come across a beauty like this?”
The man was all but drooling as he ran a gentle hand over the smooth red two-tone paint covering the right fender of the gorgeous 1924 Duesenberg Roadster, which had been kept in pristine condition for the past 30 years.
“Father bought it new during a business trip to Indiana.  This car is Charles Emerson Winchester II’s pride and joy.”
In fact, it was a mark of how concerned the man was that after Honoria’s explanation at breakfast of his son’s sudden journey out of town, Dad had expressed more concern for his health than for the borrowed auto.  Charles had merely had to promise upon the life of his future firstborn that he would allow no damage to come to it.
Daniel Pierce grinned like he’d just won a surprise jackpot. “Now I’m definitely glad I didn’t drive here.  I’ve never had the pleasure of riding in a car like this one. If I happen to vanish on the ride back, just tell my son that I’ve died and gone to heaven.”
Charles laughed, opening the door for the older man and then taking his time about getting situated in the driver’s seat, just to give his host a bit more time to enjoy the luxurious leather seating. It was refreshing to discover that not everyone in the Pierce family was an uncouth heathen.
  Chapter 3
The journey eastward was a pleasant one. Charles was not in a particular mood to chat. In fact, he could not recall the last time that he had been; but his monosyllabic responses did not seem to deter his companion in the slightest. Like his son, Daniel Pierce had been blessed with an unlimited gift of gab, and he kept up a virtual soliloquy as they drove, discussing cars, music, and movies. It seemed that the town council had just approved the addition of a new movie theater to the outskirts of nearby Spruce Harbor, and it was the sensation of all its neighboring burgs, including Crabapple Cove. “Lines a mile long to get in, every Friday and Saturday night!”
“And what film is the populace currently enjoying?” Charles asked, rather curious to know what rural America would be in such a fever about.  Popular cinema had never his particular entertainment vice, but he had learned to enjoy an occasional flick during his sentence in Korea. A M.A.S.H. unit tended to be either feast or famine as far as diversion went. Either one was up to his eyebrows in work, or all but desperate for some form of mental stimulation. Movie nights filled that bill, if only just, and at times the more simplistic or sensationalistic that film was, the easier it was to allow it to transport one away from the painful reality of their situation.
His guide’s eyes lit up. “Heard they just got a new Monroe film this week!  “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, I think it’s called. Though if a woman built like Jane Russell came knocking on my door, I sure as hell wouldn’t  turn her away for her hair color!”
The old man cackled in a lecherous manner that once again reminded Charles of his son, and he found himself chuckling along. “Neither would I, as a matter of fact, and I do take pride in being a gentleman. Perhaps it would best to experience this cinematic masterpiece for ourselves, and gather more intelligence on the matter.  Just to make an informed decision, you understand.”
Pierce gave his shoulder a friendly thump. “That’s what I like to see; a man of science!”
He turned to pointing out local landmarks as they approached his home, chatting about people and places he knew, urging his visitor to experience all that the village and nearby town had to offer.  It was clear that he was quite proud of his home, so Charles just nodded and smiled, and tried to pretend that he was not at all taken aback by the miles up miles of rural scenery, populated by little more than trees, farms, and the occasional bovine.
To say that Crabapple Cove was small was to be entirely too generous.  It was miniscule.  A virtual blink and one would never know they had been there.  And yet, in direct contrast to its size (Pierce assured him that the outlying farms and independent properties that made up the rest of the town proper stretched far beyond ‘downtown’, which was apparently what they were experiencing now.) there was an absurdly enormous banner stretched across two tall poles as one entered it, urging visitors to be, ‘Welcome to Crabapple Cove, Maine!  Home of the nation’s finest blueberry pie!’
“And is the confection worthy of such a boast?” he asked, sitting up a bit taller and enjoying a feeling of pride as he noticed the locals beginning to pop out of their homes and businesses to gawk at the beautiful luxury automobile sliding down their quiet streets. (Street? Charles could not swear to it that they had more than just the one.)  And given that he had seen nothing but farm vehicles and a couple of worn family sedans, he was not surprised. From what he knew of small towns, they probably would have been equally curious if he had wheeled in on an old velocipede. In a place where everyone surely knew everyone else, any stranger would be cause for curiosity.
“Best pie on the east coast,” the other man boasted happily. “Berries are in season now, so you’ll have to find out for yourself.  For my dime, Jenny’s Place serves the best, but Hawkeye would argue for Mable’s Diner. Oh, this is it. Just pull up here to our left.”
He eased his father’s car into an empty space along one side of a long board walkway next to a small office that he could now see had a sign painted in one corner reading, “Benjamin Franklin Pierce, M.D.”  Hanging from the doorknob was a tiny paper sign on a string that read ‘The Doctor is In’.
It gave Charles an oddly warm feeling, while at the same time reigniting the butterflies in his stomach. The elder doctor Pierce had been nothing but kind and welcoming, but suppose the younger was only being polite in granting him leave for a visit. He might be no more pleased to have a reminder of their time in Korea than Charles himself had been during the past thirteen months.
Luckily, his fears were put to rest before he had even managed to do more than shut the driver’s side door behind him.  The door to the little office came open and there stood Hawkeye, big as life and twice as noisy as he slammed back the door and jogged out to meet his visitor with a huge smile that caused his eyes to practically vanish into the deep laugh-lines surrounding them. He hopped off the boardwalk to vigorously pump Charles’ offered hand in greeting.
“Charles, I never thought I’d hear myself say this, but damn if it isn’t good to see you.” He laughed and shook his head, still grinning from ear to ear as he admitted, “Thought I’d mean it even less, but it’s great to have you here.”
It was strange somehow, to see Pierce dressed in a neat short-sleeved blue checked shirt and a pair of slightly wrinkled gray trousers, rather than the Hawaiian print shirt and loose army-green field issue of old. His hair seemed grayer now, and had been trimmed more neatly than Charles had ever seen it, as if in direct contrast to the slovenly appearance he had previously favored as a subtle middle-finger to military regulations.
Charles found himself smiling back, clasping Pierce’s forearm with the hand that was not still being warmly clasped. “I know precisely what you mean, and I find myself sharing that sentiment. It’s good to see you as well. Thank you for agreeing to host me on such short notice.”
“Glad to. We always keep a spare room warm for company. Don’t we, Dad?”
Hawkeye let go of Charles, then clapped him on the back almost as if he needed the physical contact to prove to himself that he wasn’t imagining his old colleague into this incongruous place and time.  He looked to his father, who said, “Indeed we do, son. Indeed we do. Help me with these bags and we’ll get your friend settled in.”
“That isn’t necessary,” Charles protested half-heartedly, privately glad that he did not have to personally haul all four of the suitcases his sister had packed. He was rather embarrassed as he looked over the wealth of belongings. “To be quite frank, I’m not certain what’s in most of these. My sister became a bit overzealous in her plans to ship me off on a holiday. She seems to have prepared for every possible terrain and climatological contingency.”
Daniel just smiled, hefting the smallest of the four cases out and testing it for weight. “My late wife was like that. More prepared than the Boy Scouts of America, and God love her for it. Her forethought saved us from some sticky business more than once.”
Between the three of them, they made short work of the luggage. Then the elder Dr. Pierce excused himself to go check on a few neighbors, leaving them to chat.
“He supposedly retired when I came home to take over the practice, but he likes to keep his hand in,” Hawkeye said, flopping down on his side atop the neatly made guest bed and propping himself up on his elbow to watch Charles unpack. “They’re getting used to me, but you don’t replace an old country doctor overnight. And I wouldn’t want to. They keep the checker boards warmed up and the gossip mill cranking, just hoping he’ll stop in.”
Charles allowed himself a delicate snort. “Sounds rather dull to me, but I suppose when one chooses a provincial life, they soon run out of options for entertainment.  Although your father was telling me on the way in that you just got a theatre in town. Very civilized indeed.”
Hawkeye did not appear to be insulted by his slightly condescending tone. Indeed his grin just got wider. “Well it’s not your kind, filled with the music of classical snores in B Flat. It’s just a little one-screener, but they show a pretty decent variety of movies.  Abbott and Costello the first month, then we had a western. Did they show “Shane” up in Bean Town?”
“I wouldn’t know,” Charles said dryly. “The wild west is not precisely my cup of tea, nor are sticky, crowded, childish pursuits in general. However, I am reliably informed that you currently have the beauteous Miss Monroe on display. For such as she, I would be willing to suffer the degradations of a public cinema.”
The other man grinned. “You old dog, I always suspected there was a human heart beneath that rusty suit of armor. Or a human something anyway!” He cackled wildly at his own innuendo, making Charles roll his eyes and toss a pair of socks at his widely gaping mouth. He missed his target, but they did bounce satisfactorily off of his victim’s forehead, leaving a startled expression that was more than pleasing. Hawkeye sat up. “Say, you hungry? I could give you the grand tour, ending in the best steak and potatoes you’ve ever tasted over at Mable’s.”
“And perhaps a sampling of the blueberry pie,” Charles agreed, feeling his stomach already growling at the mere thought. It had been a long time since breakfast, and the luncheon served at the conference had been more of a risk than he wanted to take.
Hawkeye’s blue eyes lit up. “Now you’re talking.” He jumped up, calling something behind him about meeting downstairs in ten minutes as he abruptly left the room.
Charles stared after him, a bit surprised to find himself smiling quite naturally for the first time in months.
There was something refreshing about seeing his old camp-mate so seemingly happy and comfortable in this place. As if a rough-edged puzzle piece that could not be made to fit into a particular picture had been plucked from there and connected back into its own proper puzzle.  As unsettled and distressed as Pierce had been during his final weeks in Korea, even spending some time in a sanitarium undergoing treatment for a nervous breakdown, this tiny town appeared to have been the correct balm to ease his mind and spirit.
Although he wished it very much, Charles doubted that being here would do the same for him. After all, it was likely the emotional connection of family and familiar sights that had helped Hawkeye, not the locality. And heaven knew that familiar surroundings had done little to soothe his’ own troubled soul . . .
“Hurry up, Winchester! The town isn’t going to come up to your room and introduce itself!”
The shout, coming up the stairs, startled him. He glanced at a small clock sitting on the table next to the guest-bed, surprised to see that nearly fifteen minutes had drifted by while he stood here woolgathering.  Shutting the suitcase, he picked up a light sport-coat that went well with the tweed trousers and button-down he had chosen for the conference and pulled it on.  A bit formal still, but what of it? It behooved one to make a good first impression, even when there was nobody worth impressing.
“Coming,” he called down, quickly checking himself in the small vanity mirror attached to a dresser.  More than satisfactory. “One cannot rush perfection, Pierce.”
A merry laugh echoed up the stairs. “We only have two weeks, Charles, and I’m starving. I’m sure the people of Crabapple Cove will be willing to settle for passable.”
He found himself smiling again, and shook his head.  There had been a time when he would have sold a kidney to be rid of that man, and yet here he was. Unpacking his belongings into a guest room smaller than the linen closet back home, and about to embark on a guided tour through the place that had spawned one Benjamin Franklin Pierce and unleashed his madcap antics upon the world.
What’s more, he was happy to be doing so.
Perhaps his sister had been wiser than she knew.

Hi! I'm currently reading "You'll Be In Mo Cridhe" by CrossingInStyle and I love it so much! I was wondering if you knew any other fanfics in which Jamie lives in autarky, or something like that (the same way he is Tarzan in CrossingInStyle's fic)? Thank you :)
Hi Anon!
In Dr. B Medicine Woman (another fic by @crossinginstyle), Jamie is living rough, on and off with a group of Native Americans or alone. However he’s not really living completely wild as he is in You’ll Be in Mo Cridhe.
We’re not aware of any other fics that follow that same pattern of complete separation from human civilization; fandom, if you know of any, please feel free to drop them in the comments below!

LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE: WEEKLY FICS
Happy Monday! I hope you are all having a wonderful start to your week, or if you’re in the US, a great long weekend. Here are some gems to make your day a little brighter.
the stars will sing for us by @fallofrainblog
Claire Beauchamp is just trying to start anew. She finds the fresh start she’s looking for in a small Scottish town, along with a pair of Jamies and all the things she never knew she needed. This one-shot has such an organic, lyrical quality to it, that the reader feels like they’re growing into this new life right alongside Claire. If you’re looking for peaceful and lovely, this is definitely the fic for you!
Market Price by @desperationandgin
Another modern AU, this series starts off with Claire on a rather forced bit of time off, looking for a way to fill her free hours. Well, she finds one rather quickly in the form of a local farmer’s market and a certain farmer therein. What follows is a scavenger hunt, some burnt lamb, a Date Five cut short, and some truly delightful vulnerability. This whirlwind romance is sweet and genuine; make sure to not miss out on the Market Price ficlets as well!
Dr. B, Medicine Woman by @crossinginstyle
This week seems like a good time to highlight Dr. B, as its 100th chapter was recently posted. Yup, you read that right, 100 chapters! At just over 300,000 words, this fic is a big one to dive into, but completely worth it. This is the story of Claire Beauchamp, a Boston lady Doctor who lands into the middle of a small town in the American West in the mid-late 1800s. As the story progresses, she grows more and more entwined with the townspeople; namely with three children who will eventually call her ‘Mama,’ and the mysterious red-headed Mac. While it is inspired by the show Dr Quinn Medicine Woman, it is not at all required to have watched Dr Quinn in order to enjoy this fic. Be warned, this story is the very definition of slowburn! Keep your patience, it will be 100% worth it in the end.
Well, that’s all for this week! I hope you all have a wonderful start of September, and happy reading!

This category has the potential to be simply massive, knowing how accident-and-chaos-prone our lad is. We’ve tried our best to include as many as we can, but as always, please let us know if we should be adding any to our list.
