Uma molécula liga-se ao receptor de neuroquinina (NK3), que desempenha um papel na regulação da temperatura corporal bloqueando suas atividades. Estudos recentes têm mostrado a eficácia desse tratamento para o controle dos fogachos da menopausa, com benefício terapêutico rápido e sustentado sem a necessidade de exposição ao hormônio estrogênio. Trata-se do primeiro medicamento desse tipo aprovado pela FDA. "As ondas de calor como resultado da menopausa podem ser um fardo físico sério para as mulheres e afetar sua qualidade de vida", disse Janet Maynard, MD, MHS, diretora do Escritório de Doenças Raras, Pediatria, Medicina Urológica e Reprodutiva, no Centro de Avaliação e Pesquisa de Medicamentos da agência norte-americana. "A introdução de uma nova molécula para tratar as ondas de calor moderadas a graves da menopausa fornecerá uma opção adicional de tratamento seguro e eficaz para as mulheres", destacou.
