remember that wild Dragon Age theme park ride (Dragon Age: Flight of the Wardens), originally located in Dubai until it randomly turned up years later (now also oddly-rebranded as "[Not Dragon Age We Swears It]: The Guardian") in, of all places, Skegness England? well, I had to satisfy my curiosity and obsession with obscure pieces of Dragon Age media & archival thereof. and so - actually quite some time ago now - I finally got around to going on a pilgrimage there (which was this whole, like.. heinous harrowing in and of itself, that I will not go into), and I rode it
and to my surprise the original Dragon Age in-ride movie is still part of the ride experience! - complete with references to darkspawn, a Pride demon, dragons, green "rifts", Discount Anders (a Grey Warden[?] mage called 'Eldron'), Discount Yavanna (a Witch of the Wilds called 'Alexia') and Dragon Age: Inquisition soundtrack music. there is also now a new pre-ride movie which replaces the old Dragon Age pre-ride movie as part of the ride's rebranding, and i simply ?¿?
there are also still quite a lot of identifiable Dragon Age props in the fantasy-themed queue-area of the ride (so these must have been part of the whole purchase between parks), including multiple iconic Inquisitor helmets, Grey Warden shields, a Dragon Age dragon (now with DA-dragon identifiable horns.. sawn off??), and several Dragon Age banners, including the Inquisition hairy eyeball, the templar symbol and the Circle symbol. here's some pictures.
[^this image is taken from the video linked below]
I also captured the new pre-ride movie, and you can see it along with the Dragon Age in-ride movie here ⬇️. and so now, with this epilogue to the.. most odyssey of all time, more than two years after the first message about the ride was ever sent to Ghil Dirthalen, this adventure in obscurity and the strange fever-dream meta story of the Dragon Age: Flight of the Wardens era in Dragon Age history is finally complete.

some further notes, thoughts and commentary under the cut -
there's a few seconds missing from this capture of the in-ride movie. for the sake of the curious and completion: in them, you're still in the fort and you see lots of 'Wardens' walking and milling around.
a camera in the ride takes two photos of the riders during the ride, which are displayed on a screen on the way out. you can choose to buy these from the Fantasy Island merchandise store. you know those photos of people on log flume rides? it's like those, only of the four riders in a row in the seats. the photos have Fantasy Island branding on them and fire along the bottom, then in two corners there's a bit of a dragon's head and that's about it. the ride photo is the only Guardian-specific merch available at the park.
some of the queue area props appear to be from random other places. like there was a barrel which had something like "1850 distillery" written on it, which is obviously temporally/thematically and universe-ly out of place (not that that's at all unreasonable given the rest of the rideworld lore, there's totally a way it could have gotten there easily hh, see below), and I guess it's a spare or leftover prop from a Western-themed ride or something? others were generic sword'n'sorcery fantasy props (some of these are from the ride's previous life in Dubai though). there are also some pretty random props, like a dead stuffed roe deer's head on the wall and a.. comically large spoon.
there's music playing in the queue area, but it's not DA music, it's generic ye olde fantasy world music.
some folks there mistakenly thought that the long themed lead-up (it was pretty darn long) queue area with the props was the entrance to or start of something completely different, like a haunted house or maze type thing, or was the ride 'experience' in and of itself.
the ride attendant gives you the option of watching the new pre-ride movie or not. I guess they get sick of putting it on and listening to it 9000 times a day (valid), and also cutting it out reduces queue times as it's about five minutes long. it's screened in a little enclosed room at the end of the queue area. you go in and sit down, they show it to you, then you go through another door to the chair machine.
the in-ride movie is blurry and poor quality. I heard someone else who rode it say that it was so blurry that they had no idea what was going on hhh
Now about the new pre-ride movie. first of all, here's the transcript.
Pre-ride movie transcript "Welcome, my friends, to the gates of our kingdom, and the start of your adventure. I know your journey has been a long and arduous climb to get here, but we are grateful that you are the ones that have stepped forward to help us in our quest. I should probably start at the beginning. My name is King Aethelswyth [sp?] and I am the ruler of Elvia [sp?] - at least, what's left of it. You see, six months ago, our world was invaded by giant demons and creatures from another dimension, which now plunder our lands, and continue to destroy our kingdom piece by piece. They came, through a time-rift, from another world, leaving much destruction in their wake. Ever since they came, our people have defended as best they are able, but, we were once a peaceful race, and sadly no match for the giant demons and dragons. Luckily, a few days ago, help arrived. They came through the rift, human in form but with incredible powers, and the ability to not only fly but transform into dragon-like creatures. That's where you all come in. You see, not only have they brought hope to our lands, but also gifted us with technology, the likes of which we have never seen before. This communication device for example - it enables us to talk to each other from great distances without being in the same room. And there is something else, and the reason why you are here. They provided us with plans to create our own machine, which as we speak is being prepared for your mission. I should explain. The machine, although made of metal and advanced technologies we can't even begin to understand, requires biological matter to function; a very specific amount of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and calcium, all of which you are made from my friends. Once you are connected to the machine, you will be lifted into the portal and instantly dropped into the outer world. You'll be able to fight alongside the guardians and help close the rift once and for all. I won't lie. The mission will be dangerous, but with your help, we can defeat the giant demons, close the rift and save the kingdom. Hahahaha! [dragon roars] Ah, do not be afraid! This is Mia [sp?], one of the dragon guardians. She will help you on your quest and guide you to the rift. There it will be up to you to find a way to close it. My friends, it is almost time for you to enter the machine, and become the guardians! [inaudible] a safe journey. Save Elvia, become the heroes you're destined to be! The gates will open momentarily, as soon as the machine is ready for you. Good luck my friends, and I'll see you on the other side!"
in the linked video, the start of the new pre-ride movie isn't included in full at normal speed as it seemed to be a compilation of whatever random fantasy-themed stock footage the video creator could find, stitched together. but again for the curious and the sake of completion: it starts out panning randomly around SPACE, like at the solar system and of planets and at the Milky Way. for a sec I wondered if it was made up of random old Mass Effect assets. then it shows dragons (FROM SPACE) invading an Earth-like planet where I suppose the Ferelden-y kindgom (formerly called "Noathen", now called "Elvia" or something) setting in the rideworld is now supposed to be set. these invading dragons invade either from space or.. another dimension?? or maybe from the future or both?? [see below], entering through a big green rift. (and they still have the green coloring for the rifts and call it/them "rifts" like in DA, which was honestly so funny to me for some reason). the whole panning in from space start to the movie reminded me a lot of the Easter eggs in the DA and ME games that, while they're just Easter eggs for fun and I don't subscribe to this theory myself (as DA is its own great, self-contained thing), could light-heartedly imply that the planet with Thedas on it is a planet in the MEverse (like the krogan head in the Winter Palace in DAI or the ogre in that ME dlc).
in the pre-ride movie, the kingdom of "Elvia" might have actually been called "Albion", which is the earliest-known name for the island of Britain. (it was hard to make out exactly what the king was saying there) the new pre-ride movie seems like it was made in England and ofc thats a common fantasy setting, so I could see it, especially since the king character's name was something like Aethylswyth, which sounded very "Old English". for me personally, if it was "Albion", it adds fuel to the fire of Caitie's cracktheory/"trying to make this fit"-headcanon for the ride story/lore (see Caitie's original video on the ride's previous life for this), that it's set somewhere obscure and backwatery in Ferelden, which is kinda England- or Britain-inspired. (dont take these thoughts or other thoughts in this post about the lore/canon etc too srsly pls hh, it's just crack for fun and I know tis just an off-brand themepark ride)
on the whole the new pre-ride movie is pretty random. there's a giant in it, but it doesn't look like a DAI giant. (is it his big spoon??) it shows a fortress in part of it which looks a bit like Skyhold if you squint, with the long bridge approaching it as the entrance. at one point one of the dragons that pops up is a dragon designed more in the style of a dragon as they are sometimes depicted in, for example, Chinese mythology and folklore. the "communication device" the king described had me rolling, it's exactly like a Dragon Age Skype Crystal or a working set of eluvians from Thedas.. I wondered if the video creator was inspired some by DAI promo images and took cues from the Inquisitor's green hand/the Anchor, since the king has a green glowing thing on (or in?) his chest. and when the king started listing the elements humans are made of, I was reminded of Fullmetal Alchemist.
also, "through a time rift".. I mean technically Dorian's involvement in DAI DOES show green space-time magic right? Where is this other dimension? ofc I know it's not literally Dragon Age, but it's funny to think about and to try and make it "fit" skhskdhfjhe. is it the Fade? the Void? from somewhere in-between like Tevinter Nights implies exists? or is it the dimension which has Thedas's mundane world itself in it - like maybe the dragons are invading this poor guy's kingdom dimension from Thedas? if so what tf is going on in Thedas?? did Solas' explosion at the Conclave ripple through spacetime and rip holes in the fabrics of other worlds as well - like is Solas out here accidentally causing interdimensional Space Dragon invasions? like, theoretically.. the new pre-ride move does reference the in-ride movie, and in turn the in-ride movie is still Dragon Age (!), so technically the new pre-ride movie IS.. kind of.. weirdly.. canon.
((the pre-ride movie references an "outerworld", implying that even in THAT dimension there's an outer world and an inner world, definitely more than one at least. and back on the dimensions thing, I'm not clear - are the dragons coming from Thedas dimension? or are they coming to Thedas dimension? "they came through the rift, human in form but with powers, the ability to fly [that's Eldron] and the ability to transform into dragon-like creatures [that's Alexia]" implies that the dimension on the other side of the rift - if the helpers came through the same rift as the invading dragons - is Thedas, because that's Eldron and Alexia from the Dragon Age in-ride movie being referred to, and Noathen where they're from is in Thedas somewhere. so some Thedosians have travelled to another world to save it?? Dragons are escaping out of Thedas? but.. from space? but also - the narration is telling us that Eldron and Alexia and the other Guardians brought with them from where they came from, as a gift, incredible advanced technology that the people of Elvia have never seen before. he then gives the example of "this communication device" which could be read meta-ly as meaning the television screen, and of plans to build a machine made of metal and advanced technology (meaning the ride machine you go sit on, which is a themepark machine irl obviously and in the 'world' of the ride, some kind of flying machine). so like.. are Eldron and Alexia from Future Thedas (think Avatar Aang/Korra, when by Korra's time there's like lots more machinery and a more modern feel), a Thedas which has advanced complex machines like idk, AEROPLANES? is that what they mean by "time-rift"? because they specifically did say "time". is that to try and explain the modern machinery? does that mean the invading dragons also came from the future, not just from space or another dimension? the other option: Eldron and Alexia came from alternate universe Thedas, which has more modern technology in it. but Thedosians Time-Travelling From The Future And Also Space And Another Dimension is so funny to me so lets go with that. my headcanon is that on the way to Elvia they also timetravelled through a Westernthemed time period and thats why theres a recent-modern period whisky barrel)).
in the ride's previous life, the explanatory hook was that Eldron made you a special harness or saddle thing with which to ride a dragon, which was what the ride machine was simulating. however now, the hook to explain the machine is that it's a gift of advanced technology powered by carbon, hydrogen, organic matter (Big Oil lmao?) etc. (I enjoyed that this explanatory hook got wackier between eras of the ride's life, much like the whole meta story of this piece of media itself. it was already weird because riding dragons isn't really part of DA. though I don't understand meta-ly speaking this convoluted explanation for the machine. dragon-riding isn't an identifiable or key part of the Dragon Age franchise, so they could have kept the idea that you're sitting on a dragon's back and flying around on that in instead of having this wacky explanation about a flying machine gifted from magical strangers from Back To The Future and it would have been fine. I love it though bc its so absurd)
And Tiny Dragon Alexia from the original ride experience is kinda referenced (unintentionally?) when the king introduces the dragon "Guardian" "Mia", as when she comes on-screen her size or scaling looks small/kinda off, so maybe Tiny Dragon lives on. so now we have Tiny Dragon Alexia, Tiny Dragon Mia, and Tiny Dragon queue prop. it's a Tiny Dragon Conference.
and like I just have so many questions. in her original video on the ride, Ghil Dirthalen wondered at length where in Ferelden/Thedas Noathen could be. where is Elvia? why does the pov of the pre-ride movie proceed downstairs into the room where the king is - like why does the king have his throne in a basement? is he in an underground bunker for safety because of the Space Dragon invasion? why does he say we "climbed" up when we have just gone down into his dungeon? why is the tiny dragon introduced as "Mia" when the tiny dragon witch lady in the in-ride movie is called "Alexia"? does the king's green glowing chest thing work like the Anchor - does he have a chest Anchor.. a Chanchor? where did they get Discount Gandalf from the queue area and why is he exactly like the Ghil Dirthalen Stock Theatre Wizards in her original video? why did they change the kingdom's name from "Noathen" to "Elvia" in the pre-ride movie when "Noathen" was already non-existent in Dragon Age lore? why did they scrub Dragon Age from or avoid Dragon Age in the pre-ride movie but leave the whole Dragon Age in-ride movie intact? are the "Guardians" Discount Grey Wardens? is the king's whole schpeel secretly an evil plot so he that can use our bodies for like necromancy-alchemy? why does the ride run on your flesh and are we about to be sacrificed in a blood magic ritual? do we end up like the husks in Mass Effect after our organic forms are broken down into compounds to fuel the King of Elvia's flying anti-dragon defense tank? is the actor of the king a park staffer who is into larping, or someone's fun nerd uncle who likes DnD? does Caitie not in fact agree that I am very handsome and smart, indeed the World's Most Interesting Guy? 😤 why go to the trouble of sawing off the dragon's DA-dragon horns when the in-ride movie is still Dragon Age?? why are the dragons invading from space anyway like what do they want??? how can I obtain the king actor guy's autograph? where are EA's lawyers? and why is there a giant spoon?

J = Jet Lag
A/N: I’ve been away at a conference and I’m just back, so I thought it’s about time for the next part the collab by @its-a-goddamn-heartbreak and me! You can find part one HERE (choking), part two HERE (drugged), part three HERE (seasick), and part four HERE (fever). We hope you enjoy this part just as much as the rest!
McKenzie slumped back against the wall of his dorm room, ducking his head low so as to avoid banging it on the underneath of the top bunk. How he'd managed to draw the short straw here and end up with the bottom bunk, he didn't know - but he felt it ever more keenly here, in the land of the shorter stature. He'd already felt like a giant walking through the streets of Tokyo, and he was slightly worried about the rugby team they'd be playing - it was very possible they might flatten them all.
He hitched a grin onto his face as he clutched his iPad in his hands and tapped on the screen, listening as the ringing dial tone echoed about the empty room.
Bridie glared at her textbook. She had midterms coming up, and this particular module was absolutely refusing to be understood. She’d been banging her head against this chapter for the whole morning, and she still couldn’t answer the stretching questions at the end. Pulling her laptop towards her, she opened up a new page of notes, hoping that reorganising the information would make it sink in better. As she began typing, a little blue icon popped up in the corner of her screen. She clicked on it, her face lighting up as she waited for the connection to establish.
“Hey McKenzie!” She greeted enthusiastically. “How are you? How was Dubai? How’s Japan? Tell me everything!!”
“Hey!” He tried to inject a tone of cheeriness in his voice as Bridie’s picture pixeled into view. “Dubai was great! It was so hot though, I thought I was going to melt halfway through the game! How are you getting on?”
“I’ll bet!” Bridie exclaimed. “Did you win though?”
“Of course,” McKenzie puffed himself up slightly, then banged his head on the top bunk. “Ouch!” The iPad wobbled as he put one hand up to rub the top of his head.
Bridie sniggered. “You’re a melon… But Japan! I’m so jealous, I want to hear all about it.”
“It’s great,” he said, but he was struggling to keep his voice at that jaunty bouncy level as usual. “I feel like an absolute giant though… we went for a walk once we’d dropped our cases off here this morning, and it’s so so different to anywhere else I’ve been.”
“Arrghhh,” Bridie groaned frustratedly. “I want to go so bad! What else have you done today? Please tell me you’re going to go and experience stuff while you’re there, not just chuck a ball around a field…”
“Course!” He replied. “I think we’re going to some temples tomorrow after training, then… uh, I can’t really remember where else… but somewhere!” He rubbed his hand across his face, the cogs in his brain working slowly.
“That’s so cool! You have to take pictures for me!” Bridie demanded. She picked her laptop up, going to lie on her bed. “What about tonight? Not gonna lie, I didn’t think you’d have time to call with how you guys are always together.”
“You’ll have to watch - your snapchat is gonna get bombarded!” He smiled, leaning back against the wall; he felt overly tired, like his limbs were being weighed down. “The guys have gone out to a karaoke place, I think.”
“Oh fun!” Bridie grinned. “They do it different over there, like in private booths, and you can order food up and stuff, my dad told me.” She paused, peering curiously at McKenzie. He looked exhausted, which she guessed was to be expected, but she couldn’t tell if the pallor of his skin was real or just a trick of the light. “Why aren’t you with them? Is everything ok?”
“Yeah, yeah - I’m…” He tried to think of how to reply, forcing a smile back onto his face. “I’m just tired…” He finished lamely, hoping she’d believe him.
“I can imagine,” Bridie said gently. “They really work you hard, huh?”
“Yeah,” he nodded again; he felt a wave of tiredness and longing sweep through his body, and he wished he could have a hug from her. “How are you getting on?”
“Heh, you know,” she shrugged. “Exams are kicking my arse. I just want to run away to the countryside until they’re over. The usual.” She chewed her lip, a knot of concern forming in her belly. He really did seem worn out, his face drawn and his eyes tight. “Maybe you should have a nap Kenzie,” she suggested. “Or at least a lie down?”
“Well, I’ll be a distraction from studying any time you want,” he suggested kindly. “I tried to have a bit of a nap earlier, but it’s like, I’m tired, but I’m not tired tired, if you understand?”
“Mmmm,” Bridie hummed, looking unconvinced. “I guess.”
“Do you have any grand adventures planned for while I’m over here?” He asked, hoping he’d sound normal and interested.
“Not that I can think of…” She pondered for a second. “I think I might take the boat down to Loch Lomond once my exams have finished, but nothing major. What’s your schedule like when you get back? You free at all?”
“Yeah, we’re gonna have some… rest time,” McKenzie took a sharp intake of breath as his head gave an achy throb. “Recuperate, all that stuff, y’know?”
“Hey, you ok?” Bridie frowned down at her screen. McKenzie’s face had screwed up in what looked like pain - only for a second, but she was certain it had happened.
“Uh huh!” McKenzie replied, a little too quickly, his voice higher pitched than usual.
“Hey, no. Don't do that!” Bridie ordered sharply.
“What?” McKenzie’s eyes went wide, uncertain about being reprimanded.
“Just tell me what's wrong,” she wheedled. “You're clearly not quite right.”
“I - I…” McKenzie started, then he sighed heavily. “I don’t know…”
Bridie ran a hand through her hair. He looked really rather dejected, and she had the sudden urge to wrap her arms round him and not let go until he cheered up. Or rub his back until he fell asleep. Or… She really wasn’t sure where this was coming from - she wasn’t at all used to worrying this much. But he was six thousand miles away, and there was so little she could actually do for him. “Sorry, sorry. I’m not mad, I’m just worried. You’re looking a little peaky. If it’s not that you’re tired, are you sure you’re feeling alright?”
“I’ve felt kinda funny since the flight…” He admitted, biting his lip. “I’ve never really done long-haul before, and I just feel like I’ve been run over.”
“Ohh…,” she trailed off, unsure what to say that wouldn’t sound patronising or insincere. “Could be jet lag? Did you sleep at all last night?”
“Not… not really?” McKenzie cast his mind back to the night before; everything was such a blur, from them playing on the pitch in sweltering heat, then scrambling to get all their stuff into bags and to the airport for their onward flight to Japan. “I kinda catnapped on the plane for a bit… but we were on a bit of a high.”
“Hmmm… And you’re what, nine hours ahead? So still…-” She paused, having to count on her fingers. “Still a whole five hours ahead of Dubai I think. I’m not surprised you feel a bit run down.”
“Is it common like?” He asked. “I’d always kinda thought jet lag was a bit of a joke…”
Bridie tapped away at her keyboard, searching up the term. “Yeah, um, it’s a legit thing. For some people it’s worse than others I think, but especially bad if you travel east. Ah, here. It says: ‘Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when your body's biological clock is not in sync with the local time zone you are in.” So basically like, your body still thinks you’re here, and that might be what’s making you feel bad…”
McKenzie frowned slightly. “So it’s to do with sleep?” He said. “So it wouldn’t account for feeling… anything else?”
She glanced up from website she was reading. “Well, it’s not just sleep. If your...everything’s a bit out wack, so it can make you feel physically unwell too. Why?”
“It’s just…” McKenzie took a slow breath in, a cold shiver running through his body, as he looked down at the image of Bridie. “I don’t feel that great really…” He replied vaguely.
“Oh hun…” Bridie’s brow wrinkled sadly. “I’m sorry, that’s rubbish.”
McKenzie sighed, nodding his head slightly, drawing his knees up slightly closer to his chest. “I wish you were here.”
A bashful smile tugged at Bridie’s lips, and she turned away slightly, her hair obscuring her face. “Alright big guy, here’s what we’re going to do. It’s a semi-reasonable time to go to sleep over there, right?”
“Well, yeah…” McKenzie nodded again.
“Ok. Go and get yourself a glass of water, get into something comfy, and have a lie down. I’ll be right here, so if you can’t sleep it’s not a problem we can just talk, but I think you should at least give yourself a chance - and give your body a rest.”
“I’m - kinda already in my pyjamas,” McKenzie admitted, his cheeks going a little pink.
“Brilliant.” She smiled encouragingly. “Looks like we’re on the same page here then. Come on, you can’t be comfortable all hunched over like that.”
“Okay…” McKenzie tried to prop his tablet upright, so he could lie on his side and still be able to see her.
“Hey, water first,” she reminded him softly. “Even if you don’t drink the whole thing. Or you’ll wake up feeling horrible - planes really dry you out.”
“Okay bossy boots,” McKenzie chuckled slightly, reaching down the side of his bed and bringing up a water bottle, which he shook gently at the camera, before taking a swig. “Happy?”
“Yeah. Yeah I am actually. Thank you,” Bridie teased, shifting her screen so that she could revise some flashcards while they talked. “Alright, try to look a bit more like you might actually try to sleep instead of like you’re lying down because I told you to, that’d be great.”
“Why don’t you tell me about what you’re studying?” He suggested quietly. “Teach me, via face call.”
“Aha, if you want. I guarantee you’ll find it boring.” She picked the first card off the top of the pile. “So, sustainable building is important because our buildings consume up to 50% of the physical resources in their environment. Once built, they continue to be a direct cause of pollution because of the emissions produced in them or their impact on the ground.” She paused, studying his face on her screen. His eyes were drooping closed, and she felt a slight ache in her chest just looking at him; it must be so awful to be sick and so very far from home. She plucked up the next card. “Sustainable building materials must be highly durable and can incorporate different technologies, such as capturing carbon dioxide. There are other original techniques, such manufacturing concrete with recycled tyre rubber; using the mud from sewage plants for making bricks; reusing industrial waste materials such as rock, ash, mud…”
Bridie was brought out of talking by the rustle of sound, looking up at her screen she saw McKenzie had taken hold of his tablet and sat up on his bed again.
“You can’t sleep sitting up, hun,” she joked, although she felt a slight sense of consternation now that his too-pale face was more in the light. “Everything ok?”
“No,” McKenzie mumbled, wrapping his free arm around his midriff and leaning forwards slightly; he took a couple of slow deep breaths in and trying to convince himself that the burn in his chest wasn't the creep of stomach acid. “I can't lie down…”
“What’s wrong?” She pressed softly. “Can I help at all?”
“I feel…” He stifled a hiccup into his hand. “Really sick…”
“Awwh babe, I’m so sorry,” Bridie sighed. “Try to relax, I know it’s not nice.”
“Yeah,” he said slowly. “I'm - I'm sorry…” He stifled another hiccup into his hand. “Maybe I should go - let you study.”
Bridie looked doubtful. “Is there anyone there with you?”
“Nah, they've all gone out…” He shook his head minutely, and that small action seemed to compound the way he was feeling. He clapped his hand to his mouth as his stomach gave a little lurch, and he forced himself to swallow hard.
“I’m not letting you go through this by yourself,” Bridie said adamantly. “It’s bad enough that you’re so far away. Studying can wait.”
“You're… you're so lovely, y'know?” McKenzie told her, now massaging his stomach with his free hand.
“Yeah, yeah.” She brushed him off. “You’ve done this for me how many times?”
“I think - hic! - we're even…” McKenzie answered, then groaned as his stomach cramped again.
“Yeah.” Bridie replied. “Exactly.” McKenzie’s face twisted, and she felt her hands twitching; the need to make sure he was alright was like an itch under her skin. “Deep breaths Kenzie, you’re alright. You feeling really rough?”
“Yeah…” He sniffed, he could feel hot tears burning at the back of his eyes, but he didn't want to let them spill out - this was bad enough without him crying too.
“Oh Kenzie…,” she consoled him gently. “It’ll be okay. I’m not going anywhere.”
“This is a nightmare…” McKenzie muttered, shifting his leg from underneath him as it had gone to sleep.
“You’ll be fine in a couple of days,” Bridie said, uncertain whether that would be helpful to him at all. In reality, it could be over a week until he felt better, but she was sure that he wouldn’t want to hear that.
“I've got training…” He said mournfully.
“Usually people don’t get sick from jet lag, so I doubt this’ll last that long,” Bridie reassured him, although she found it a little ridiculous that he was thinking about training when he was feeling so unwell. She wondered if he’d be feeling this anxious about it if he’d come down with food poisoning or a virus. “As long as you get a good sleep tonight, it shouldn’t put a spanner in your training schedule…”
“I'll do my best…” He replied. “I am tired… just don't feel like sleeping is an option yet.”
“Are you actually going to be sick d’you think, or are you maybe just nauseous?” Bridie asked tentatively. “Because you know like, sometimes it can mess with your belly just when you’re too tired.”
“I keep getting like… weird spasms,” McKenzie said, “I don't know. I feel pretty bad…”
“Alright,” Bridie said soothingly. “We’ll see how you go then, hm? How can I help? Distraction? Bit o’ quiet?”
“I like hearing you talk…” McKenzie admitted, feeling his cheeks pinken slightly. “Just about anything…”
“Okay…,” Bridie hesitated momentarily. “Have I ever told you about the time my dad took my friends camping and Seamus got stuck up a tree?”
“No, you've not!” McKenzie replied, settling back so he was leaning against the wall again.
“Alright, so me and my dad, we used to go camping a lot,” Bridie began, settling in for a potential long afternoon of storytelling, “and a lot of my friends never really left Belfast. So when I was about seven, for my birthday, I demanded that we take them with us. Just so it wasn’t so weird that we did it, and because it was my favourite thing, I don’t know. And I think he was worried about being the only adult in charge of so many kids, but I was absolutely set on it, and he’s never really been very good at saying no to me. So he packed six of us into the car and took us out of the city to this place we used to go all the time. It had everything you know? I think that’s why we went so often. Like, there were nice places to walk, and a reservoir nearby, and a rope swing over a stream not too far out, and my personal favourite - the climbing tree.”
“I used to have a climbing tree as a kid…” McKenzie mumbled, smiling as she spoke.
“Yeah?” Bridie grinned. “Aren’t they the best?”
“Absolutely,” he agreed. There was something soothing about the rhythm of Bridie's voice.
“Yeah, so there’s this tree. And I’ve been climbing it since I could walk basically, but the boys being boys didn't believe me.” She continued her story, sensing that McKenzie wasn’t really up for much conversation. “So the little idiots decided we’d have a competition to see who could get up and down fastest.”
“Mmhmm? I tried to do that with my brother once,” McKenzie mumbled.
“Did that work out for you?” She asked drily. “Cos it definitely didn’t for them.”
“No, it didn't…”
She chuckled. “You’ll have to tell me about it sometime! Anyways, Darragh went first and he went up really fast, but coming down was harder and Orlaith cried the whole time, she was so scared. And then it was Seamus’ turn. And he went up OK, until he got nearly to the top and looked down.”
“I - um - sorry!” McKenzie had sat bolt upright; he could feel sweat trickling down the side of his face as though he’d been running at full pelt.
“Hey, you're alright,” Bridie soothed softly. “What's wrong?”
“I - I…” McKenzie bit his lip as the tears that he'd tried to hold back spilled out onto his face. “Ugh, this is so stupid.”
“Oh Kenzie…” Bridie chewed her lip, trying to find a way to comfort him and coming up empty. She was feeling a little useless, sat there on the wrong end of the call.
“Sorry, sorry,” he swiped furiously at his eyes again. “I’m sorry about this… I just don't know what to do!”
“You don’t need to be sorry,” Bridie said insistently. “Sometimes you need to have a good cry, especially if you’re feeling lousy.”
“Yeah, it's just…” McKenzie sniffed. “I feel so far away.”
“I know, but I’m sure you’ll feel better soon and then you’ll enjoy being so far away! And then you’ll be home before you know it and you’ll wish you weren’t,” Bridie smiled encouragingly.
“I won't,” McKenzie said stubbornly.
“Oh you will.” Bridie rolled her eyes. “When you come back to this weather you really will.”
“I’ll get to be with you though,” he mumbled.
“You’re a sap,” Bridie chuckled. “I promise I’ll stay right here as long as you need…”
“You’re so good to me…” He smiled, then his stomach cramped again and he doubled forwards, pressing his hand to his belly. “Ugh…”
“Think I’m just about average to you to be honest,” Bridie muttered, slightly at a loss as the image in the screen bounced about with a clatter, until she was just looking at the slats of the top bunk. “You’re ok Kenzie.” She raised her voice, hoping he could still hear her. “Take some nice deep breaths for me, yeah?”
“Oouuhh…” She heard him groan. “Brrruuuaaarrpp!” The belch was low and loud across the speakers of the tablet, but it was still facing the ceiling. She winced. She really hated that he was having to deal with this by himself - that none of his teammates had stayed around or checked on him.
“Oh hun, that sounds rough,” she murmured. “I’m so sorry…”
The tablet moved, and McKenzie picked it up again, he was trembling slightly as he brought it back up. “I - I think ‘m gonna lie down again…”
Bridie nodded. She’d travelled a lot, and though she’d never had jet lag this bad - had never even met anyone who got jet lag to this extent - she was fairly certain that some rest would do him good. “Alright babe,” she said gently, pausing as it suddenly occurred to her that that wasn’t a word she’d used often. “If you can, I think it’s a good idea.”
“Yeah…” He groaned slightly as he lay down on his side, holding the tablet so half of his face was in view. “Will you still talk to me?”
“Of course! Whatever you need.”
“Thank you…” He spoke softly. “Tell me ‘bout your climbing tree?”
Bridie smiled pensively. “Okay,” she began. “Storytime. Are you sitting comfortably?” She waggled her eyebrows as she asked the question.
“As much as I can be,” he answered back, his body felt heavy as he lay there.
“Alright, where was I?” Bridie mused, trying to remember where she’d left off. “Oh yeah, Seamus. So Seamus got to near the top much quicker than Darragh, but once you get up high the branches are much thinner. And I think he must have been trying to work out whether he could get away with stopping where he was and coming back down from there, or he wanted to see how far he’d come, I don’t know to be honest. But either way, he got up there and he looked down. And then he just...froze. Like a cat. And we couldn’t see his face because he was so far away, but we could hear this noise, and we eventually realised he was crying, and being the mean kids that we were, obviously, we started poking fun. And then I guess eventually we realised he was actually stuck and we started trying to help - like, give instructions and stuff.”
“Mmmhmm?” McKenzie sniffed a little, tears were still periodically leaking out of his eyes as he listened.
“Yeah, so we’re like shouting up to him where he can put his feet, trying to get him to come down, and he just won’t move, he’s petrified. So I went up cos I knew the tree best, and I got to just underneath him and I pulled on a branch and the tree kinda swayed. Like I said, we were high up and it was all getting thinner. So the tree moves and he screams bloody murder, and the first thing he says since he got stuck there is telling me not to come higher. So I’m trying to persuade him to just move his feet down, cos it’s perfectly safe like, I do it all the time, don’t be such a baby. And I was so tempted to just grab his ankle and pull to get him moving, which in hindsight was a terrible idea and I’m glad I didn’t go through with it.”
McKenzie’s eyelids were heavy, and he struggled to keep them open as he listened to Bridie’s soothing voice; he positioned his head so his ears were free so he could hear, and he allowed his eyes to close.
Bridie smiled sympathetically as she watched him curl into his pillow, and lowered her voice slightly so that she wouldn’t keep him awake. “Well, we’re up there a bit, and at some point someone went to fetch my dad - probably Orlaith, because she’s a big sister and was responsible even back then. So my dad rocks up, and demands I come down. And then he climbed this tree, but because he was a lot bigger than any of us, he couldn’t get anywhere near Seamus because the branches wouldn’t take his weight…” She trailed off, watching McKenzie’s face closely. His eyes had drifted shut and his jaw had slackened, his lips parting slightly so that she could hear the slow, gentle puffs of air that escaped them. He looked...really young, and really vulnerable, neither of which were words she associated with him. She waited a little, just in case he wasn’t properly asleep, but he didn’t seem to notice that she’d stopped talking.
“Sleep well McKenzie,” she whispered, as she reached out to end the call.

Beyond the Coming Age of Networked MatterBy Bruce Sterling
I wasn’t too chuffed about the weird changes I saw in my favorite start-up guy. Crawferd was a techie I knew from my circuit: GE Industrial Internet, IBM Smart Cities, the Internet-of-Things in Hackney hackathons. The kind of guy I thought I understood.
I relied on Crawferd to deliver an out-there networked-matter pitch to my potential investors. He was great at this, since he was imaginative, inventive, fearless, tireless, and he had no formal education. Crawferd wore unlaced Converse shoes and a lot of Armani. He had all the bumbling sincerity of a Twitter Arab Spring.
Crawferd could see no difference between physics and metaphysics. The way he had it figured, all matter was code. If you suggested that his trippy hacker mysticism was not entirely plausible—that rocks were rocks and trees were trees, they weren’t “networks”— he’d brood at length, then chase you from the hackerspace, slam the door, and blog compulsively.
Given his deep unworldliness and his intense interior life, Crawferd was a pretty easy guy for me to manage. We got along okay, while Sophia and Fatima totally loved Crawferd. S&F were my two wealthy oil widows from Dubai. Their Gulf State pin money had to go somewhere that wasn’t Cyprus or Bitcoins.
So for a while things were cozy. I’d arrange funding brunches in Gstaad, where Fatima and Sophia went skiing. I’d wheel in Mr. California Ideology while they had their mint tea and shared the hookah. The sparks would fly.
Crawferd was cool about Sophia and Fatima. He never asked them for much, and he always brought them nifty digital fitness toys. All tech chicks kind of dug Crawferd. He had this spooky geek tenderness, a possibly sensual, my bits-might-turn-to-atoms thing going on.
So S&F hung on his every word, but the truth was, the guy simply didn’t know how to cash in. He was all sci-fi and no megacorp.
Then he missed a couple of gigs and he stopped updating on LinkedIn. I was busy helping Microsoft waste some Kinect money, so I didn’t bother him.
Then I breezed through Palo Alto and he spotted me on Foursquare. He shot me a mysterious, incoherent SMS full of sick Tweet orthographics. “W3 sh4ll overl4p time, space, and dimensions,
and with0ut bodily motion, peer to the .”
I got rid of that thing pronto. I always erase after reading, my lawyer taught me that. But seeing his freaked message, I took good care to meet him F2F.
Crawferd was lurking and had gone very downside-scenario. He had tinfoiled all the windows inside a nameless AirBnB, which he’d rented from some shivering TumblrGoth who was way into, like, black candles, inverted pentagrams, and big plastic 3Dprinted gargoyles.
Fancy LED lights in Shapeways Nervous-System lamps were segueing through every color in the spectrum, while Soundcloud was streaming the shriekiest works of Grimes.
This was not his customary scene, and I further perceived that my man Crawferd had shed several kilos, dyed his hair pastel, and failed to shave. He kept compulsively stroking the filthy screen of his Chinese-knockoff fondleslab.
“Buzz, old buddy,” he croaked at me, “it used to upset me, because I couldn’t deliver a massive breakthrough in the networked- matter space. I talked a great game sometimes. But I couldn’t execute. But now I’m so freaked out! Yes! Freaky from success! I have networked matter!”
Crawferd had this thousand-mile killer-drone stare now, and also that rigid, pedantic, coder tone of voice, that grammar-nazi thing you see mostly on Ayn Rand websites.
My deliverable seemed clear to me: reduce fever, resume chill, and restore functionality.
“Crawferd, pal, listen up. You’ve been way overdoing it in an overheated tech scene. I’ve got your back, and I’m thinking Oahu. There’s this cool yoga-hula ashram out there, no Internet connectivity, no cell-phone bars, nothing. Some exercise, brown rice, and vitamin B, and you’ll be the old Crawferd in no time.”
“Buzz, this matter is about matter. We see matter because we’re constructed from matter. We imagine we’re made from matter because all we can measure with our network sensors is a narrowly materialistic set of inputs. But that is not the cosmic truth, Buzz. A new science underlies ‘matter.’ It’s about a cellular- automata framework in which all material manifestations are computationally equivalent.”
I’d seen these sad symptoms in other guys like him. My fave Californian tech boy had gone straight off the ledge into full Erik Davis techgnosis. “Oahu’s just hours away. Beaches, blue sky, maybe a sweet, understanding hippie lady with some pakalolo.”
“I have found the grail for the coming age of networked matter, Buzz. I have seized its Philosopher’s Stone. I have found a way to transform all matter into network.”
“Why?” I said.
He got that look on his face. “What do you mean, ‘why’?”
“Where is my user benefit? Where is the business model? You can’t get VC backers for that scheme! That is pure Tim Leary mystic woo-woo! You’re a coder, Crawferd. I can hear crap like that from L.A. screenwriters.”
“Do I look like I’m handwaving at you? I have built a freaking demo! I can run it for you, right here, off my phablet.”
Crawferd was a proud and touchy fanatic, but then again, so was Steve Jobs. You can take one fatal step too far into the Reality Distortion Field, and all the typewriters will vanish. They don’t come back, either. “So, what does your demo, uh, demo?”
“You remember those two Maker kids? The ones I had hacking those beehives for me?”
I remembered his interns, all right. Two cute Millennial designer kids. Their names escaped me, but she was, like, very Kevin Kelly techno-emergence, while he was very Jussi Parikka insect media. They were Crawferd’s start-up slaves. Being Makers, they worked around the clock without a salary, just like bees did.
“Your beehive kids,” I said.
“Great design research team! They went deep into the bee ‘umwelt,’ that sensory world of bees that only bees can perceive. Bees are intensely illustrative of matter-networking principles. Bees scarcely have brains, yet they still assemble and congeal all the nectar and pollen within a given area.”
“So that’s your demo? It’s bees? Cut to the chase! Where’s the humming and stinging?”
“That’s not my demo yet . . . but here, look what they did on
Kickstarter. You’ll appreciate this.”
Crawferd caressed his cruddy little “phablet”—man, I really hate that word—and there they were, Crawferd’s two favorite Maker kids. Nicely dressed up in black and yellow bee-themed cosplay duds, with that embedded video that crowdfunding projects always do.
“Hi there, people of the Internet! I’m Adrienne, a graphic interface designer from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, and this is Julio, my coder and Significant Other!”
There followed ninety seconds of jerky handheld from Adrienne’s iPhone. Her pitch was all about the graphic interfaces through which bees perceive and manipulate matter. Bee sensors, mostly, their compound eyes, antennae, and their big tonguey mandibles.
Then Julio horned in, to vlog about the bee-code running on their tiny bee brains.
Bee brains lacked much processing power. Just enough hardware in there to run a high-level bee-dance language where the bees could clue each other in about tasty matter resources. Adrienne had mocked this system up on a whiteboard with boxes and arrows. Julio had coded it with open-source modules.
Then they’d created these 3Dprinted plastic “bee puppets.” Their fake plastic Maker bees were, like, awesomely effective at bee dancing. Their robot bees, set dancing by Arduino, were basically Trojan Bees. They had gotten root in the hive. They had powned the hive colony superorganism. Those bees would do whatever the hackers wanted.
“Their bee-swarm pitch is out of this world!” I told Crawferd. “I can’t believe I haven’t seen this idea before!”
The Maker kids ramped up to their triumphant climax. Being new to California, they’d noticed all the window-box marijuana plants. They’d hacked their bees to go out to forage for dope pollen.
They showed the camera their existence proof: a double fistful of honey-drenched Silicon Valley hashish.
Then little Adrienne and Julio modestly asked the public for twenty grand to go 3Dprint some beehives, so they could issue some royal-jelly marijuana prescriptions. A business-model screwup that was total facepalm. Of course their Kickstarter had exploded. Just gone ballistic. It had blown past twelve million USD in capital and was heading north at high speed.
“You have created a monster,” I told Crawferd. “I can see why you’re so upset now. This is not even funny. Where are those crazy kids? They’re gonna need to lawyer up.”
“They’re no longer with me,” muttered Crawferd. “That’s the bad part. That’s why I’m hiding in here.”
“So where’d they run off to?”

Immunotherm for Mass Fever Screening
Immunotherm is a solution for thermal imaging for mass testing throughout pandemic outbreak (fever screening) is the reduced level of sensitivity for detecting people that is infected. Thermal screening at flight terminals and also any other places where the general public congregate or travelling is targeting people that are currently symptomatic as well as most likely to be contagious, (coughing, sneezing, and also the manufacturing of mucous creating the fastest spread). Thermography Testing Dubai to discover irregular temperature (hot or cold) will certainly have a high portion of precision in spotting unusual temperature levels, which after that results in more screening of a specific in order to validate signs and symptoms or dismiss medical uncertainty. Immunotherm is a solution that will detect and discover fevered individuals a mass testing technique consisting of fast motion in airport terminals, boarder, malls and more. One recommended option is thermal scanners. Infrared (IR) thermography, infrared radiation discharged from our skin can be spotted as well as utilised in addition to details regarding the ambient atmosphere to approximate core body temperature level- which might suggest a person is running a high temperature, an usual very early sign of COVID-19. Today, this stands for Thermography Camera the only feasible non-contact mass testing solution for high temperature. The precision of the infrared system can, nonetheless, be influenced by human, ecological, as well as devices variables. Comprehending this wide range of variables consisting of the methods which the scientific research, innovation, as well as applications themselves communicate-- will certainly assist both customers and system manufacturers supply the very best outcomes.

What Returning to Work Will Look Like in Offices, Cafes and Factories Around the World
(Bloomberg) — Wearable social-distancing buzzers. Masked blackjack dealers. Drive-thru electronics purchases. From cubicles to factory floors, cafes to clothing boutiques, businesses around the world are dreaming up creative ways to reopen, attempting to start revenue flowing again while minimizing the risk to customers and employees.
The global economy is riding on their ability to pull off that delicate balance. A new flareup of Covid-19 cases could shutter offices, stores, restaurants and manufacturing plants once again, further choking off the flow of goods and services and threatening more jobs. Some governments, such as China, are providing rigorous oversight of the process. Others, including President Donald Trump’s administration, have offered looser guidance and are entrusting businesses to monitor their facilities. Scientists are still studying how the virus is spread, and whether keeping people six feet apart is enough, adding to the risks.
The companies’ plans rely on a steady supply of masks, gloves, thermometers and tests that is likely to strain budgets and manufacturers’ ability to keep up. Social distancing will be built in, with people divided by barriers and kept apart from colleagues and customers, a U-turn after years of movement toward open floor plans. Some companies will monitor employees more closely than ever before, while others will let workers choose how much protection they need. The way we work, shop, travel and eat in 2020 – and probably beyond – is being plotted out in boardrooms around the world.
Here are the changes companies are contemplating for their workplaces in the coming weeks.
The Office
Seats on the shuttle bus to Unilever’s Shanghai offices can be reserved using a chat group. Employees must be masked to board, and they sit on alternating sides, one person to each four-seat row. Upon arrival, each worker scans a QR code and fills out a health status report to get a daily pass to enter. Then comes the temperature check and the hand sanitizer.
Inside the office, movement is tightly regulated. Employees keep their masks on and are encouraged to use the stairs instead of the elevator, with spritzes of hand sanitizer before and after touching the regularly disinfected handrail. In the canteen, a single person is allowed at each four-seat table.
Such measures might seem predictable in a centrally controlled society like China, but some version of them is starting to appear in the West. At Britain’s former state phone monopoly, BT Group Plc, call center workers sit two meters apart, and walkways are designated as one-way to keep people from brushing past each other. Temperature checks are becoming routine at Sistema, the Russian conglomerate, which also says it’s developed its own two-hour test for Covid-19. Employees who come to the office have been tested in the past couple of weeks, though as many as half of the call center workers at MTS, the mobile network controlled by Sistema, are operating out of their homes.
More Room
Flexible space operator Knotel, which runs offices for corporations including Uber and Netflix, says workplace design has to change. Offices will likely be less densely populated, and altered to make them “antiviral,” according to Amol Sarva, Knotel’s chief executive officer.
“Things like ventilation, UV light, density screening, video monitoring, and temperature monitoring, cleaning protocols — those are all going to have to change,” he said. “Certainly there’ll be more space.”
In China, Cushman & Wakefield has helped move nearly a million workers back into 800 million square feet (74 million square meters) of office space. The company is creating a Recovery Readiness manual for landlords and tenants, based in part on its experience in China, that includes colored carpets to create visual boundaries around desks, plexiglass shields between desks that face each other and signs that direct walking traffic in a single direction.
Fewer Meetings
Even when people do come back to the office, meetings will be limited, and large gatherings are out of the question. This week, Facebook Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg canceled all physical events of 50 or more people through June 2021. The vast majority of employees are required to work from home through May, and those who need to carry on doing so will be able to work at home through the summer.
The road to normalcy may be much longer than that. At Abcam Plc, a British protein research company, 40 out of 300 China-based employees started returning to work in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Hong Kong on Feb. 14. Two months later, the company is running split shifts to maintain distancing for the roughly 50% of employees based in manufacturing, logistics and essential lab work.
The Factory
On Feb. 10, Winly Automotive (Wuhan) Ltd. was assigned a checklist from the government. To reopen, the company would be required to have a one-month stash of masks and sanitizer, take a photo of the supplies, and send it to officials before submitting to a detailed inspection. “The policy has been constantly changing,” said Wang Xuepan, one of the plant’s managers. “It’s very difficult for us to handle.”
In the Seattle area, Boeing Co. has worked with the Washington state labor department on a plan to reopen its factories. It will be doling out cloth masks to most workers, saving the gold-standard N95 masks for a select few in more hazardous conditions.
Unlike office drones, factory workers have to show up in person to get the job done. Figuring out what basic protections they’ll need is part of the challenge. At Boeing, industrial engineers are analyzing the sequence of work on its assembly lines to find ways to spread apart workers.
Taking the Temperature
Airbus SE has divided employees at its plants into red and blue teams, who don’t see each other because they use different routes to enter and exit buildings. Volkswagen AG is allotting more time between shifts and reducing expectations for production because it takes longer for people to move around each other at a safe distance. Ford Motor Co. is experimenting with wearable devices that would buzz workers if they get too close together.
While the virus can be transmitted by people with no symptoms, many manufacturers are doing temperature checks, whether with thermometers, thermal imaging cameras or — in the case of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV in the U.S. — reusable forehead strips.
Fiat Chrysler, whose CEO Mike Manley is one of the executives talking with Trump about reopening the economy, is requiring workers to fill out a health questionnaire two hours before reporting to work each day. They must bring either a hard copy, or scan a QR code with their phone, to prove they aren’t displaying signs of illness or exposure to the virus, according to documents obtained by Bloomberg. Workers can’t enter the plant without it.
Some companies are closing cafeterias in favor of vending machines. Dongfeng PSA in Wuhan is handing out prepared lunchboxes to employees, who must eat at least 1.5 meters apart with their backs to each other.
Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. said Chairman Li Shufu wrote a song to keep workers motivated through such dreariness. “A world full of expectations/Turned to dust of yesterday,” the lyrics go. “Their sorrow flowing into the sea/But the flower of love is quietly blooming.”
The Airplane
When air travel resumes in earnest, it’s likely that hand sanitizers, face masks and thermometers will become standard at most major airports, said David Powell, medical adviser for the International Air Transport Association, a trade group. All three have shortcomings, but can also reassure passengers, he said.
The International Civil Aviation Organization, which sets global flying standards, wants to establish a “public health corridor concept.” Under such a plan, major airlines, airports, public authorities and other parties would adopt common protocols for screening, boarding, in-flight procedures, arrivals, customs and baggage.
“We cannot all just stop flying,” Ansa Jordaan, the group’s chief of aviation medicine, said during an April 15 webcast.
Emirates Airline said this week it was the first to conduct rapid Covid-19 blood tests, with results available in 10 minutes for passengers flying Wednesday from Dubai to Tunisia. It plans to extend the procedure to other flights, according to Chief Operating Officer Adel Al Redha.
Other carriers are attempting less invasive measures. Etihad Airways, another major airline in the United Arab Emirates, plans to deploy touchless self-service devices at its hub airport in Abu Dhabi to identify travelers with medical conditions, including the early stages of coronavirus.
In the U.S., American Airlines Group Inc. plans to continue spacing customers apart during boarding and flights, conducting extensive cleanings of aircraft and reducing food and beverage service to limit contact, CEO Doug Parker said in an April 15 video message.
“When you do fly, aircraft cleanliness and social distancing matter greatly,” he said.
The Store
In China, it’s become standard to have your temperature taken any time you want to go shopping. Visitors to the Wuhan International Plaza luxury mall are checked for a fever at the door, before they queue up to be served one at a time at Louis Vuitton.
Levi Strauss & Co. disinfects its Chinese stores three times a day and requires temperature checks for customers, who are expected to wear masks before entering the store. Fitting rooms and products that have been tried on are disinfected each time they’re used.
It’s unclear whether practices implemented in China will make their way to other parts of the world, though several companies said they’ll learn from their experience in Asia.
Drive-Thru Shopping
Another technique is to keep shoppers out of the store altogether. Dixons Carphone Plc, the electronics retailer, is considering plans for contact-free “drive-thru” style stores to limit the risk of coronavirus for staff and customers. Shoppers would park outside, call the store to select items to buy, use a contactless system to pay and then open their trunks so staff could deliver the products.
Salespeople at luxury retailers in China were already using social media to engage with customers before the outbreak, but they’ve stepped up the effort since, adding clients on WeChat and sending them information about the latest trends. Louis Vuitton tried showcasing its summer product line in a livestream show on March 26 featuring a social-media star, but was ridiculed for the quality of the video. Sometimes there’s no substitute for personal contact.
The Restaurant
Buffets and salad bars will be re-thought, and self-serve drink stations may be “a thing of the past,” said Taco John’s CEO Jim Creel, who added that other changes are afoot at the 387-store chain. Taco John’s popular salsa bar — around for the past 15 years — may be removed.
“We hope we don’t have to take them out — that we’ll be able to figure out a way to make them still work — but I’m afraid the fear factor our there will force us to go to a pre-packaged option.”
A test of self-ordering kiosks may also get pulled back. “It was a good idea three months ago, but not so good today,” Creel said.
Phone Pay
In China, restaurants and even bars have opened back up in Shanghai, with varying limits on seating arrangements – some allow six to a table, others only one. In Beijing, restaurants are doing temperature checks. In Wuhan, most places are still delivery-only.
“In the short run, as dining rooms open back up again, you’ll probably see many restaurants space their tables a little bit further apart,” said Jack Li, CEO of menu researcher Datassential. “You’ll see more restaurants try to adopt phone pay. So not having to hand your money or card to anyone. You’re certainly going to see more places continue to do things like contactless delivery.”
Starbucks Corp. is taking a store-by-store approach to resuming business activities in the U.S., with services limited to drive-thru, delivery and takeout via mobile orders and contactless pickup.
“As we experienced in China, this will be a journey,” CEO Kevin Johnson wrote in a memo to staff on Thursday.
The Menu
Chains are cutting back menus, focusing on products that sell best and are easy to make. Romano’s Macaroni Grill has pared down its menu to 70% of what it used to be, saying goodbye to pizzas and calzones recently. McDonald’s all-day breakfast menu is gone.
Fazoli’s Italian restaurant chain is trying to secure Purell sanitizing stations – four for each store — along with “millions” of alcohol-based wipes for re-opening the dining rooms of its 216 locations. The company is also re-thinking bathrooms and looking into touch-less soap dispensers. It’s an investment, but a worthwhile one, says CEO Carl Howard.
“I want to let the consumer know I’m doing everything I can to keep them as safe as possible,” Howard said in an interview.
The Arena
Large public gatherings aren’t top of mind yet in China, but Trump and the people who run the U.S.’s biggest sports leagues appear aligned in their thinking that live games, at least in some form, are a critical part of helping the country recover.
“The progression needs to be open outdoor sports first, golf, tennis, swimming so that we can start to test the waters — that I’m fine with,” said billionaire Mark Cuban, who owns the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.
One obstacle may be local politicians. When UFC floated plans to host an event this weekend on tribal land in California without spectators, it was pressure from politicians, including Governor Gavin Newsom, that led to its cancellation. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has reportedly discussed the possibility of prohibiting large gatherings like concerts and sporting events in the city for another year.
The Movies
That said, there’s billions on the line for sports leagues, sponsors and media networks if the games don’t resume soon. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious-disease expert, has said that that the only way to do that this summer is to close venues to fans and keep all the players, coaches and referees isolated from society.
Cinema owners are also waiting to see when health officials give them clearance to open up. Cinemark Holdings Inc., the third-largest U.S. movie chain, has been in discussions with major film studios about when to release blockbusters again. The chain’s management thinks they could begin bringing back staff starting in late June, then build up a marketing campaign for a broader re-opening on July 1.
The experience won’t be like it was before coronavirus hit. The chain will either have to limit the available tickets for each showing, leaving about half its seats open. Or it may eliminate reserved seating, so customers can voluntarily spread themselves out when they arrive. Cleaning will have to be ramped up, and opening hours may be limited to accommodate the changes.
“How long that will take? We’re not completely certain,” said Mark Zoradi, Cinemark’s CEO, on a call with analysts and investors on Wednesday. “But we’re planning on anywhere from one to three months to light up that engine again and then to begin with higher profile, new product.”
The Casino
Las Vegas casino executives have discussed opening with as little as one-third of their rooms available, with limited entrances where guests’ temperatures could be checked. Casino employees would wear masks and gloves, and gamblers would sit at least a chair apart at blackjack tables.
The moves are similar to what is already occurring in Macau, the world’s largest gambling market, where casinos closed for 15 days in February and reopened under tight restrictions.
The companies are also discussing enhanced cleaning techniques, something unions have requested.
Fun Parks
The $19.3 billion U.S. theme park industry is also making plans, though no one knows when gates will reopen.
When they do, employees may be wearing masks and temperatures may be checked not only at the entrances but inside as well, said Dennis Speigel, a theme park consultant in Cincinnati. Operators may also institute virtual queues, where guests snag a place in line through an app and come to ride when it’s their turn.
“The theme park of the future is going to have to take a much different turn, from distancing to wanding to cleaning,” Speigel said. “I’ve never heard the fear in the voices that I’ve heard. Nobody knows what they’re going to be doing.”
