Oh I’m so excited by a Don Quijote Au, I’ve been reading it since I was four! (Childrens version, I’m not a super genius just hispanic,) But I would love to see your au!!! Your drawings are so good!
Awww tysm anon!!! I don't know if it's something I'd actually end up drawing, just because I'm not even sure what I could draw for it(I'm not too fond of armor and that's all Don Quixote wears 😭) But as I'm reading the book, I can't stop thinking "yeah I could see Fernando doing this." I think they're just the same breed of ultra dedicated, dramatic maniac with an insane lack of self preservation. Like im not even that far in, and he keeps getting grievously injured and just gets back up and continues his adventures. Its like Fernando going back to racing after getting electrocuted, after having jaw surgery, hand surgery, etc etc. And all those long rambling, dramatic speeches Don Quixote goes on, I'm like, hmm yeah if Nando was in 17th century Spain would act like this. Just everyone around him being like "idk what nonsense this is, but he sounds committed!! I'll humor him ig"
Also a child's version, omg I wish! I enjoy reading it but there's so many references and words that have me 🤨. But tbh it's not too much of a struggle when I just view it as if it's a Monty Python bit djkfkg just the way he goes on and on and everyone around him is like, wow this dude is insane, is so funny
#Fernando WOULD try to fight a windmill#except i think he'd win #but i love how in the book sancho is so done w his ass but don quixote keeps pulling him back in w his sheer dedication and earnestness#<- which is sooooooo fernando to me#its how i imagine he is w his mechanics/team in general#just being like WE COULD WIN THIS#like that one time last ssn when he said that whatever race was the last time he'd miss out on a podium#and we all genuinely believed him bcs of how confident he sounded 😭#but this is like my napoleon au#idk if I'll draw much of it. but its such a thesis for me#that he is very similar to them just in character and mentality and everything etc#catie.asks.

There was another part of this ask that I’m assuming was lost, since this was in response to your post on Hubert in FEH. Thing is though, I kinda want to alter my answer to that.
I noticed recently that Dorothea and Ferdinand are likely a literary allusion to Don Quixote, with Ferdinand being the Germanic equivalent of Fernando. Both of them end up helping a priest stop the Windmill Tilter, as before he was reimagined he was meant to be seen as arrogant, violent and erratic. It would work for pushing the idea that these two should join the Church against Edelgard, especially considering Ferdinand’s comments after Dimitri’s death in SS/VW, where he likens Edelgard to Dimitri and says a retainer should have moved to stop their lord.
Now, with the allusion to Don Quixote established we must remember that the book was an attack on the romanticized notions of chivalry in literature at the time. And one of the big things about chivalry, something Dimitri comments on in Hopes to Ashe, is how it serves to strengthen the lord’s position through the loyalty he commands. It’s a method of control, similar to the Japanese bushido code and therefore open to the same criticism you see in the likes of some old samurai movies or Ghost of Tsushima. It’s also worth noting that the Imperial Japanese used bushido to justify the atrocities they committed in WWII, as it made them believe themselves above the subhumans they were fighting for various reasons.
Anyway, think about Hubert for a second. He was taught at a young age to serve Edelgard, and wanted to be a pegasus knight. When Edelgard was kidnapped by her uncle, his first instinct was to take off after her to try and save her. In both games, Hubert is also the only one who will never defect from Edelgard’s side. Hubert is a very twisted example of chivalry, willing to do anything in the service of his lady out of duty and love for her... and she’ll just laugh at his confession.
Hubert killed his father because his father betrayed his Emperor and his duties. That’s all Hubert sees. He doesn’t want to see his father as the good man Hanneman knew, or think about the reasons why his father would do such a thing such as protecting his family from the power-hungry Emperor. Wonder how the mother and sister Hubert says he has took the death of their husband and father, and how they see Hubert now. But that’s left unanswered.
Hubert will believe Edelgard about Aegir despite the evidence to the contrary, and when Ferdinand reveals there is no proof of Edelgard’s accusations Hubert rationalizes it as Aegir having destroyed the evidence despite there being a lot of it for his lesser offenses.
The Insurrection fought against Ionius’s attempts to gain power and used it to empower themselves.
The Elites left the empire and took their relics with them, with the church not stopping them.
All betrayals of the Empire in the mind of someone who was raised to be loyal to Edelgard, with no thought towards the reasons why people would turn against the Empire or the morality of the emperor. Hubert even pushes Edelgard into working with TWSITD in order to facilitate her goals, and is willing to go behind her back and kill people he views as a threat to her even when she says they will live.
Hubert is, above all else, loyal and that’s the problem.
He’s not like a Ferdinand who fights against Edelgard, someone who saw fit to help those who served his family escape the Empire when he defected. He’s not like the Ferdinand who will tell Hubert, in the Japanese iirc, that Edelgard must be removed from power and is willing to die in order to make that happen (while the translation just made it out like Ferd wasn’t thinking and just following orders. Fuck you Treehouse). Claude even calls Hubert a loyal dog to Edelgard.
Hubert is loyal to Edelgard like the boy who wanted to be a pegasus knight was taught to be. In his case, it makes chivalry out to be very toxic if it means blind support...never mind Edelgard weaponizing Jeritza’s mental illness to become her Death Knight.
Which makes sense, because Byleth's story is supposed to be about them having to fight their former student a la Obi-wan, stopping the Black Eagles from joining her through their influence. It's not like with Claude and Dimitri, where Byleth's influence helps them become better rulers. It's one of those cases where Hopes requires knowledge of Houses, showing how it can't stand on it's own legs story-wise while also trying to give information that should have been in Houses..
Exactly.
It's really kinda annoying that Hopes requires previous knowledge. I understand why, but it still sucks.
