I know how easy it is for great fics to get lost to time and buried on Ao3 by a mountain of newer or more highly viewed/kudo'ed/commented-on ones—especially in a fandom as large and active as Dragon Age. So this is my weekly-ish event where I dig up a few of them to read and then tell y'all what I've found!

Bottles of Thedas

This is cheating a little because I've read this before, but seriously, rereading this feels like paging through a college photo album. Everyone shows up and is delightfully in-character, and Kit's writing SHINES in the dialogue. Bottles is mostly funny, and a tiny bit sad in places, and heartwarming the whole way through. Plus, it's in a delightful bite-sized format!

The double-edged sword of Duty

OK Bull's characterization is so good in this fic--he's thoughtful, loyal, and cool-headed in a crisis (even when he's panicking over his kadan being in danger), and I think Direga gets his thoughts on Solas right on. Also he and Mahanon are cute as hell!! I loved this.

So in Trespasser Solas says that he had to "override the magic personally" to take control of the eluvians from Briala but what if it was way stupider than that.

Her passphrase was Fen'Harel enansal.

What if while he was knocking his head against the wall trying to figure it out, one of his own agents just happened to mutter that in proximity to an eluvian for unrelated reasons and the mirror came to life

and the agent is like "Your name activates the eluvians!" and Solas is like [sweats] "I knew that."

Seriously, I went back and forth hating pretty much everyone but Felassan (because how can you not adore him?) And now love most with a grudging respect for two.

Athena. My badass. The main character in my fic, Tales of the Fadewalker. It’s my longest running piece of writing I’ve ever done with 750k words over 3.5 years.

Eluvians are basicaly teliportstion circles, so far there all mirrors, they often have a code it can be an item nearby or a password, for brialas eluvians the pasword is "Fen'Harel enansal"

so briala controls the eluvians in the winter palace right? how is t the qunari were also controlling them? do they have more than one key?

Briala controls more eluvians than just in the Winter Palace; she controls them all over Thedas! :D This is one thing DA:I actually does include from the book too, in the eluvian codex entry.

As Morrigan explains, different eluvians require different “keys,” most of which seem to be just plain knowledge. While Briala primed a master key in The Masked Empire, (creating her chosen passphrase, “Fen'Harel enansal,”) the eluvians can also be used individually by collecting their own keys. This is how the qunari were able to stumble upon this independently, and this is why the they were collecting as much knowledge of the ancient elves as possible.

There are some eluvians that are broken/corrupted, like Merrill’s, that don’t work. There are also some that Briala didn’t have access too, as Solas says she only unlocked a portion of the eluvian network. (Which makes you wonder just how many eluvians there are out there.) But until Solas took control over all of them, Briala was basically the master of the eluvians.

Solas leaned forward and squinted to observe just how eroded the instructional mosaic was, hoping to understand. This artwork was meant to inform the denizens of their little wayside temple how to unlock the room for shelter, should great winds or a violent storm hit. This outpost was no more than ruin now, of course, but the door appeared intact. The room beyond should serve as a safe harbor for the night.

Only, he could not make out the instructions. Too much had been chipped and worn away. Solas huffed in exasperation, stepped back, and tried calling forth yet another set of runes to make the door slide open. When those failed he tried another set, gesturing broadly with his staff. He accidentally reached too high and knocked a branch overhead; the swallow poised there squeaked indignantly, ruffled its feathers, and shot from the branch. Solas lowered his staff and studied the crystal and metal affixed with rough cloth to the end of the long length of freshly-carved oak.

It was not broken, luckily - unlike everything else he had encountered in this world since waking.

He squinted at the door, and sighed.
