beginning to be legitimately charmed by boom!sonamy. everybody knows these two losers are crushing, eggman keeps bugging sonic about it because being archnemeses doesn't stop him from being a wingman, yet all of team sonic do NOT acknowledge the disaster happening at all except to take potshots at sonic and amy

sonic even appears to be aware amy likes him because he makes jokes that she's "obsessed with him", and whenever pressed amy will insist that sonic is a fucking loser and she doesn't like him in any capacity, actually, and no she did not write a play about him

the core of it is that they're both too obsessed with their self-image to ever admit to being in love, because being in love is SINCERE and GENUINE and UNIRONIC and therefore GROSS.

sonic needs to be a cool guy 24/7 so he is NOT stammering he is MANLY. you see even in the tails' crush episode that he recommends acting so utterly unimpressed that it entirely avoids even HINTING at any desire to, uh, "spend time with" the person you like (disgusting!!). for tails this just meant zoey was deeply confused and went "okay!" and left. sonic is in too deep in the teenage boy disaffected apathetic coolness sauce to acknowledge he has emotions outside of sardonic quips.

AMY MEANWHILE. SHE IS NOT EXEMPT FROM THIS. my core amy thesis is that all versions of her have an immense need to control their image, and this amy has simply choosen a different direction than the rest. amy is an intelligent woman of refined taste, a grand example to all, the smartest and most benevolent of the team, a feminist, an icon (and incredibly humble to boot!). therefore liking someone like SONIC, known cringefail loser, is a grand affront to everything she stands for. it's unrefined. liking someone as quintessentially a 17yr old boy as sonic should qualify as antifeminist, even. she shoots him down in everything he does because she's got that "i can fix him" mentality when in fact they are both ruining each other in new and exciting ways.

both of them r allergic to sincerity and that's precisely why they deserve each other. keep everyone else out of it. everyone deserves to make fun of you for this horseshit

i love the sonic w did hc ever since i reread some of the corocoro manga and that is just Straight Up the nicky situation it's great. love the idea that mr tinkerer is in some way still part of eggman but i'd imagine that eggman tries to ignore/stamp down everything related to that but it bleeds thru in how often idw likes to play w eggman being parental to his creations. i dont think eggman is ableist necessarily it's just that showing vulnerability goes against his Public Image yakno. so he'd tolerate in others but not really himself

and yeah like. tails' respect for eggman is Solely on the technical level and tails often has contempt for How eggman uses what he does. it's like wasted potential.

kind of getting obsessed w eggman. guy w issues. ignored by his family so he makes his own and it's twisted and broken and bent but by god it's his.

our eggman having NPD and fighting against sonic whos exactly the same is p interesting. the two are p similar - impulsive, doing what they want when they want, generally not doing what they do out of a sense of justice or for the greater good (though eggman sometimes claims as such as a joke) but because they feel like it. they both want attention, respect and acknowledgement, its just that ones evil about it and the other thinks he's evil bc of it

talking further abt sonic boom the hit 2014 tv show, the secret sauce to the comedy is really just that everyone is an egocentric loser

characters aren't making jokes for the audience, but for the other characters, because everyone needs to be the funniest person in the room at all times. that's how you get characters just flubbing their bits ("Your Obliteratorbot can't hurt me! I'm unoblibi- unbl- unob- You can't kill me." / "Take that Egg..... ....man. You try coming up with new ones every time.") [I am genuienly convinced that they just kept bloopers in sometimes.], you have characters discussing how to improve their punchlines, you have everyone else reacting to the jokes, threatening to harm each other for bad puns, communaly laughing at the butt of the joke, giving unimpressed stares, hitting each other with hammers, etc.

it's just all a very naturalistic delivery. the voice direction is also top notch, and i could honestly believe any of these people could exist in real life.

every character has the fundamental capacity to be a loser. i've seen this praised as an aspect in atla, funnily enough. NOBODY is ever as cool as they want to be, and that is simply funny as hell.

sure chris has dark blue instead of black and the shade of red is different but both of them have nigh identical reddish brown hair, plus the red/white/yellow colors???

it is SO apparent when they're in the same shot it drives me crazy hello.

plus chris' dad is a tech ceo so new conspiracy theory that the thorndykes and the robotniks are relatives

i feel like it makes a lot of sense that sonic would be panicky about it at first... being that big on freedom and autonomy n all it's easy to imagine he would be Upset to say the least if he discovered he's not the only one behind the steering wheel and things happen without his input sometimes

do love in this scenario how tails is just supportive. he's probably at least friends with most of them (but gets scourge with the water spray bottle.) does he consider all of them his Big Brother or just sonic specifically... i mean you mentioned one who is Specifically for giving tails affection so i just wonder if the relationship is different... mary-ann vs the cps who will win.

also appreciate the sheer commitment to the bit in having one alter who is just very obviously inspired by sonic sez.

SHADOW BUT GREY: this is Mephiles. He stole Shadow's shadow and that's why he looks like this. Mad god of time trying to reunite with his other half and blow up the world.

SHADOW BUT ORANGE: Shadow Android. Eggman mass produced these. Why? Who knows. He never used them. First appear in Sonic Heroes.

SHADOW BUT...??? ORANGE AND METAL SONIC??: This is either Metal Sonic 2.0 from Sonic Rivals (i forget if 1 or 2), but if it's a comic panel and he has a mouth, that'll be Shard the Metal Sonic from the archie comics. (He's Metal Sonic, but with a makeover.)

SONIC BUT GREEN:

1. Leather jacket + shades: Anti-Sonic / Scourge! Sonic from Anti-Mobius, he's a dick, he's green because Knuckles punched him. You may also see him in blue, still with the shades and jacket, from before Knuckles punched him. (From the Archie comics!)

2. Red jacket, messier hair, and drumsticks: Manic! Sonic's triplet, from Sonic Underground. He's not a dick, but a thief who still retains those tendencies.

KNUCKLES BUT????: this is a character from the Knuckles the Echidna archie comic series, and I could not fucking help you more than that. Knuckles has a brother named Kneecaps in those.

SONIC WITH A MUSTACE: That's Sonic's uncle Chuck! He appears in a coupla things, such as the Archie comics, satam, and underground. He has a dog, and he's a scientist. Gets turned into a robot a lot.

SONIC BUT WITH ONE SINGULAR STRAND OF BROWN HAIR: Sonic's dad Jules from the Archie comics.

SONIC BUT WITH GLASSES A SWEATER AND ANXIETY DISORDER: Nikki/Nicky from the CoroCoro manga. he actually IS sonic, is just the only one unaware of this fact.

EGGMAN BUT PALETTE SWAPPED: Eggman Nega, who is uhhh. Eggman from the Sol dimension / Eggman's descendant. Either of those. Or both? Either way, he first appears in Sonic Rush.

AMY WITH A DIFFERENT HAIRCUT: Sonia from Sonic Underground, Sonic's other triplet. She and Amy are both pink girl hedgehogs, but Sonia is darker, and has straight up hair instead of just styled quills.

CHAO THAT LOOKS LIKE CHARACTER XY: they just do that sometimes.

ANOTHER au that has been slow cooking is the fucking dadow AU and i am thinking abt what 300yrs postcanon shadow is like

i think he's like. chill. all his friends have died five thousand times over (exaggerated) so for like the era immediately after sonic and co he had it Fuckin Rough but eventually made like new friends probably had a whole adventure saving the world as the wise old mentor of a new gen of heroes or whatever and he has had to embrace the sonic attitude of live every day as you go By Force or else he would have Fucking Imploded

so now instead of dissociating and having a mental breakdown when thinking abt his friends too hard he just gets wistful nostalgia and melancholy. good for him. i think he'd have The Most Peace over maria by then because he knows he's fulfilling her wish and protecting the world even while also living for his own enjoyment

also omega is there. and other robots probably. the new adventure of saving the world could've just also been sage going ballistic after eggman dies (of old age eventually) so she tries to conquer the world in his name or something and shadow gets closure over grief by paying the lessons he's learned forward

honestly i have not considered whether silver has another parent in this AU at all. and i think part of that is silvace's fic where shadow just. reproduces asexually. which is very funny and also in that fic i want to throw him down the stairs.

ANYWAYS. POINT IS. shadow has embraced the Transience Of All Life over the past couple decades and omega has been ship of theseus'd several times over and then shadow has a kid and wait a fucking minute. is that silver. is that silver. is that

and THIS is the first time shadow gets a Fucking Crisis in thirty years because he actually recognizes someone for once and he gets full force slammed thinking abt the past and also he's thinking abt how fucked he knows silver's original childhood was so he needs to make it a point of pride to be The Best Dad Ever because. did his other timeline self just abandon his kid or what. is og future shadow dead. is he a fucking clown

so all around silver does have a decent childhood in this. his dad is Super present in his life and sometimes silver got the feeling his dad wasnt really looking at him and wow how does he know how silver's powers work this well???

but all is good until silver approaches Age 14 and shadow needs to consider how time travel works. because there is a very real chance he's gonna lose his son without the kid even dying. and he is Used To Grief but he's never experienced grief like this before. (i think in his many years he did also have a phase of not getting attached to others because he knows he'd have to grieve them later but he got over that but now he's REMINDED of it and like he's had friends family but he's only got The One Kid and wurgg.)

so he's just dreading it. considering talking to silver about this showing him the records but too afraid he's gonna box silver into an identity that might have retconned itself out of existence anyway and shadow knows what it's like to be defined by your misery so.

which of course means he spends too long pussyfooting and the Time Travelling happens and silver just shows up at the house one day with 14yrs worth of new trauma

i ran out of steam but anyways how do you connect to your son when he is both your son but also an ally you have rose tinted nostalgia for, a reminder of the first rough years of your existence and all the things you've lost and now you wonder if all the love you scrounged up to give him ever made a difference or whether it was all just doomed to end up like this

and silver gets the dilemma of how do you connect w your dad when you remember how much he loves you but also his past self got into an argument with you yesterday/three hundred years ago. and there's two versions of yourself running in parallel and one of them loves him so much and the other one doesn't even know who he is

inherently viewing each other as two different people and feeling like two different people shoved into the same perception and unwilling to let this fall apart for the half of love that's there yet so incapable of properly reconciling everything into a neat and tidy existence <3

also the sequel to that fic would be silver getting invited to a extreme gear race via dedicated silver timecapsule (it's always in the same spot and it works by putting in a message that gets sent to the future, silver reads it and goes back in time, and by him going back in time the message can be taken out of the capsule for a different one and the original message is retconned out of ever reaching the future and silver arriving in the past for whatever he was invited for becomes a minor paradox. to sonic and co it's like instant messaging because they only have to put the message in until the actual event and the timeline where they had to protect this thing doesn't exist)

anyways. when silver gets invited to something low stakes and silly, shadow decides to tag along because he wants to reconnect with his kid (who was just normal yesterday and now there is an infinitely deep rift between them) and silver cant bring himself to stop shadow (because suddenly since a day ago they're closer than ever) and what ensues is a cat and mouse conflict of silver trying to keep shadow's identity a secret from the people of the past as shadow tries to be the most obnoxious supportive dad ever

i am poking MORE at sonic chronicles and i think chronicles amy is quickly becoming one of my favorite takes on amy???? if you actually look at her dialogue options instead of just being a dick to her for the laffs then you can see that she's actually pretty ashamed of herself. she hates her temper and she's worried her clingy behavior has permanently ruined her relationship with sonic. not even in the romantic sense, in the general sense.

like, if you have sonic express actual worry for her, her first gut reaction is disbelief. isn't that fucked. "I'm worried about you." "You... you are?" like it just doesn't track. and when you poke fun at her and question her facade, she gets defensive and angry, but any hint of genuine care... she's incredibly flustered!! it's!! argh!!! chronicles amy i love you so much actually!!!

just adding the tiniest smidgen of self awareness to amy where she wants to be anything to sonic so bad but she doesn't know how to behave other than to carry on like she always has! she's making a stupid plan to make up a fake boyfriend so sonic will get jealous so she knows he cares. at least a little bit. and maybe this is her final nail in the coffin but she can't stop!! what else can she do except cling tighter!!

um um um you get. me talking about metal sonic. for very long.

the main sonic AU thing i have slow boiling up there is like. robian metal sonic theory except he gets deroboticized by accident except he's still 12 yrs old because robots dont age. and now he has to deal with a) being flesh and blood again b) being twelve years old. i rotate it in my mind with my sibling because metal sonic has become blorbo incredibly fast somehow and i blame Complex Inquiries on ao3 which is SO GOOD. also this fic it's evil. and basically my AU thing was lowkey spawned in opposition to it (AFFECTIONATE) because . stares at the sky. man.

gets a bit embarrassed gushing about it but proceeds anyway. ahem. (clears throat.) basically metal just slams head first into the roboticizor on little planet and the only person who witnessed this is sonic, but metal, having just had a Major Fucking Revelation (he did not know he's actually sonic from an alternate timeline) just Bolts and everyone who meets him just goes "hey why is classic sonic so sad. also why did he bite me. also why is he here." because considering generations and forces, why WOULDNT they assume he's classic sonic, right, and this just kinda pisses him off worse. because now he's being delegated not to "the sonic copy" but to "the baby sonic" so pick your poison honestly.

in my mind's eye he DOES look exactly like classic but like. more unkempt. gloves are torn so he can claw at people. (there's a whole dilemma about how he'd view his robot form as "superior" because a) it's actually faster (thanks to upgrades) than he is now as a 12yr old b) claws and lasers are simply cool c) customizable. (i love transfem metal sonic and HONESTLY honestly. if i play the long con that IS where this Au can end up. but only with a very careful long con and character development.)

so you have sonic, who is deeply confused because he ALSO doesn't know metal's backstory and just thinks metal got turned into a flesh and blood child somehow and man he has GOT to get that guy like a bath and some good chili dogs, everybody else wildly concerned why classic just blew up a town, and metal just exploding internally at all times.

very fond of the "classic is mute" hc also (tho i think that's just Game Canon thanks to generations) so metal also struggles to communicate a lot since robot hands werent actually dexterous enough to do sign properly and now he's suuuper rusty, as is everybody else who knew sonic back then, because they haven't needed to use sign for years.

i think at some point also metal just goes back to eggman. hey fucker turn me back into a robot i need to kill sonic absolutely right now. now the REAL kicker is eggman didn't even know metal's backstory, because the roboticizor is a design he just reconstructed from his future self back then, decided he wasnt gonna bother with something SOMEONE ELSE came up with, and then promptly forgot about it. so eggman is also confused. what do you MEAN you're metal sonic. what the fuck. ok i guess you can have some gauntlets and a jetpack go fuck shit up.

i dont have plot beyond this i simply like to spin it.

I also keep thinking abt What Continuity this would be set in because i fucking LOVE metal in idw i love his hesitation and his Choice to reject sonic's outstretched hand and go back to eggman and i ADORE his whole bit with Belle where she wants to save him and.

but there's also a lot of potential in Sage being Dad's Favorite when metal is very much eggman's special boy in idw. like Sage & Belle both have such unique perspectives about them but they don't exist alongside each other and metal has a different relationship w eggman compared between idw and the games that i can't decide which is more narratively interesting to pursue because "ok maybe you started warming up to your creator after the whole betrayal bit and a huge chunk of that does turn out to not just be programming but your own volition, and now when you were in trouble you turned back to him again, this time with No Shot of it having been programming, but now you get to remember that he's actually nothing to you and stole your future and committed the greatest possible atrocity against you" is. is a Bit for sure.

but also compared to "you hate him so fucking bad you need him dead but you need sonic dead even worse so you have no choice but to team up with him and are forced to reckon that he CAN be kind, he can be kind to someone who was the age you were once, but the version of him back then wasn't. she made him kinder but you weren't enough so you just get to suffer."

it's both. it's both so good man i can't pick.

like metal definitely also just tries to blow up the world super sonic style 100%. and has to be talked down into at least accepting what happened so he can even begin to process it. and accept that the Sonic he Used To Be has been dead and gone for years. ego death has already occured. he's already been someone else for ages and it's about time she saw that at least.

which is of course where i can bring the transfem angle in as metal is forced to redefine herself and come to terms with her continued existence. yippie yay.
