the silver & whisper dynamic is so fucking funny actually.

first silver starts as a whisper fanboy because Holy Shit a New Hero!! Silver's seeing the rise of someone he's never heard of and that's So Cool. it's proof the world is actually moving forward it's a symbol of hope.

(and whisper is entirely unaware of this and hates the attention)

but when they actually meet. good lord. silver at this point has been waiting for things to Go Bad for several weeks. ptsd and finally escaping his shit environment for good. meanwhile whisper is ALSO on hypervigilance because mimic is Out There and she is just waiting for things to go to shit, also.

same issues. same issues. the paranoia squad. and whisper is blinded to tact by her hatred and trauma around mimic, and silver is blinded to tact by his recklessness, and Both of them lack social skills (autism moment) and they just. get into the Paranoia Feedback Loop where they unintentionally egg each other on without realizing how insane they look to everybody else

resulting in whisper and silver stalking someone for an entire day and then attacking the guy in broad daylight.

it's so fucking good. i hope they sincerely try to kill mimic again and tangle has to stop them. tho i can also see silver stopping whisper from taking the shot considering silver's chill-out vacation and him having learn his lesson about how Things Can Be Fine, sometimes, whereas everything and everyone keeps pressing the retraumatize button on whisper.

absolute disaster duo whose issues amplify each other in terrible ways. do not let these two go on a duo mission alone. or do, and See What Fucking Happens

i love the sonic w did hc ever since i reread some of the corocoro manga and that is just Straight Up the nicky situation it's great. love the idea that mr tinkerer is in some way still part of eggman but i'd imagine that eggman tries to ignore/stamp down everything related to that but it bleeds thru in how often idw likes to play w eggman being parental to his creations. i dont think eggman is ableist necessarily it's just that showing vulnerability goes against his Public Image yakno. so he'd tolerate in others but not really himself

and yeah like. tails' respect for eggman is Solely on the technical level and tails often has contempt for How eggman uses what he does. it's like wasted potential.

kind of getting obsessed w eggman. guy w issues. ignored by his family so he makes his own and it's twisted and broken and bent but by god it's his.

our eggman having NPD and fighting against sonic whos exactly the same is p interesting. the two are p similar - impulsive, doing what they want when they want, generally not doing what they do out of a sense of justice or for the greater good (though eggman sometimes claims as such as a joke) but because they feel like it. they both want attention, respect and acknowledgement, its just that ones evil about it and the other thinks he's evil bc of it

beginning to be legitimately charmed by boom!sonamy. everybody knows these two losers are crushing, eggman keeps bugging sonic about it because being archnemeses doesn't stop him from being a wingman, yet all of team sonic do NOT acknowledge the disaster happening at all except to take potshots at sonic and amy

sonic even appears to be aware amy likes him because he makes jokes that she's "obsessed with him", and whenever pressed amy will insist that sonic is a fucking loser and she doesn't like him in any capacity, actually, and no she did not write a play about him

the core of it is that they're both too obsessed with their self-image to ever admit to being in love, because being in love is SINCERE and GENUINE and UNIRONIC and therefore GROSS.

sonic needs to be a cool guy 24/7 so he is NOT stammering he is MANLY. you see even in the tails' crush episode that he recommends acting so utterly unimpressed that it entirely avoids even HINTING at any desire to, uh, "spend time with" the person you like (disgusting!!). for tails this just meant zoey was deeply confused and went "okay!" and left. sonic is in too deep in the teenage boy disaffected apathetic coolness sauce to acknowledge he has emotions outside of sardonic quips.

AMY MEANWHILE. SHE IS NOT EXEMPT FROM THIS. my core amy thesis is that all versions of her have an immense need to control their image, and this amy has simply choosen a different direction than the rest. amy is an intelligent woman of refined taste, a grand example to all, the smartest and most benevolent of the team, a feminist, an icon (and incredibly humble to boot!). therefore liking someone like SONIC, known cringefail loser, is a grand affront to everything she stands for. it's unrefined. liking someone as quintessentially a 17yr old boy as sonic should qualify as antifeminist, even. she shoots him down in everything he does because she's got that "i can fix him" mentality when in fact they are both ruining each other in new and exciting ways.

both of them r allergic to sincerity and that's precisely why they deserve each other. keep everyone else out of it. everyone deserves to make fun of you for this horseshit

talking further abt sonic boom the hit 2014 tv show, the secret sauce to the comedy is really just that everyone is an egocentric loser

characters aren't making jokes for the audience, but for the other characters, because everyone needs to be the funniest person in the room at all times. that's how you get characters just flubbing their bits ("Your Obliteratorbot can't hurt me! I'm unoblibi- unbl- unob- You can't kill me." / "Take that Egg..... ....man. You try coming up with new ones every time.") [I am genuienly convinced that they just kept bloopers in sometimes.], you have characters discussing how to improve their punchlines, you have everyone else reacting to the jokes, threatening to harm each other for bad puns, communaly laughing at the butt of the joke, giving unimpressed stares, hitting each other with hammers, etc.

it's just all a very naturalistic delivery. the voice direction is also top notch, and i could honestly believe any of these people could exist in real life.

every character has the fundamental capacity to be a loser. i've seen this praised as an aspect in atla, funnily enough. NOBODY is ever as cool as they want to be, and that is simply funny as hell.

i would kill for belle and sage interacting. i bet they're each other's worst nightmare.

belle looking at sage and seeing a girl who still gets her father's love but in return she's part of the same ideals that hurt the friends she's made and oppose her new life. a stern reminder that what belle wants is simply impossible to obtain anymore.

sage looking at belle and seeing that love is not unconditional. that she can fall out and be abandoned. that she is not special. she is replacable. she is the replacement.

frontiers idw adaptation when they'd probably kill it

in the sonic universe, is it considered racefaking to have a fursona? or do mobians also make humansonas? is there discourse about how character customization only includes token mobian species and it's ALWAYS hedgehogs and foxes like cmon we know this isn't for mobians, this is for humans who want to roleplay sonic. since human-mobian contact seems pretty sparse, are there like, weird presumptions about each other? "all mobians are so short--" "op has never met a crocodile" "idk man one time i met a rabbit who was like 180" "op does know some humans are also that short right" are sports seperared by species or is it just all of sonic's friends who are insane even by mobian standards? what do humans even have going for them?

lanolin. the wayshe starts as spunky villager #3 but has everything taken from her again and again as mere collateral damage to the big adventures. she bows to authority she flinches at loud noises she Needs Rules because following the rules kept her alive.

she finally gets to be in control but nobody behaves how she wants them to. finally, she is the authority, in some small way. she is the one calling the shots, and she will do so only according to the Rules, because everyone needs to follow the rules to stay alive.

Tangle wants the diamond cutters to be friends, but to her, it is a Job. It is a Job, that must be done like a Job, and treating it like a fun adventure is dangerous and stupid.

in comes duo. duo listens to her. duo tells her she's right. duo is even newer than her, someone who truly respects her authority, someone she can teach The Right Way To Do Things. it's everybody else who is already used to this, who isn't villager #3 whose home burns in the background, who is Wrong. because she doesn't have superpowers. she can't afford to be cocky.

finally, someone who respects her, someone who respects her rules, someone who is just as normal as she, and he was playing her like a fiddle the entire time.

starting a conspiracy theory that sonic and amy in the boom show actually started dating offscreen and havent told anyone sometime between s1 and s2

in the evil dr orbot episode you see them having a picnic, alone, and whenever someone alludes to the two of them being together, like mombot in the mombot episode, instead of Vehement Denial they just look away and laugh awkwardly. AND in the beebot episode, we get THIS dialogue exchange:

Sonic: "Must everyone chime in with a quip?" Amy: "Communication is the key to a functional relationship, Sonic." Sonic: "Relationship-- who said anything about a relationship?"

which like. oh yeah she is vagueing him. they are NOT fucking telling anybody this is the funniest interpretation i think.

it really is genius that the main games refuse to ever give sonic a backstory. that way any spinoff media can do whatever the fuck it wants. what if sonic was actually just a 10yr old boy with DID. what if sonic got his speed in a science experiment gone wrong. what if sonic was actually a prince and had siblings. what if he was just a random kid who happened to be born this way. it's great. never change

ANOTHER au that has been slow cooking is the fucking dadow AU and i am thinking abt what 300yrs postcanon shadow is like

i think he's like. chill. all his friends have died five thousand times over (exaggerated) so for like the era immediately after sonic and co he had it Fuckin Rough but eventually made like new friends probably had a whole adventure saving the world as the wise old mentor of a new gen of heroes or whatever and he has had to embrace the sonic attitude of live every day as you go By Force or else he would have Fucking Imploded

so now instead of dissociating and having a mental breakdown when thinking abt his friends too hard he just gets wistful nostalgia and melancholy. good for him. i think he'd have The Most Peace over maria by then because he knows he's fulfilling her wish and protecting the world even while also living for his own enjoyment

also omega is there. and other robots probably. the new adventure of saving the world could've just also been sage going ballistic after eggman dies (of old age eventually) so she tries to conquer the world in his name or something and shadow gets closure over grief by paying the lessons he's learned forward

honestly i have not considered whether silver has another parent in this AU at all. and i think part of that is silvace's fic where shadow just. reproduces asexually. which is very funny and also in that fic i want to throw him down the stairs.

ANYWAYS. POINT IS. shadow has embraced the Transience Of All Life over the past couple decades and omega has been ship of theseus'd several times over and then shadow has a kid and wait a fucking minute. is that silver. is that silver. is that

and THIS is the first time shadow gets a Fucking Crisis in thirty years because he actually recognizes someone for once and he gets full force slammed thinking abt the past and also he's thinking abt how fucked he knows silver's original childhood was so he needs to make it a point of pride to be The Best Dad Ever because. did his other timeline self just abandon his kid or what. is og future shadow dead. is he a fucking clown

so all around silver does have a decent childhood in this. his dad is Super present in his life and sometimes silver got the feeling his dad wasnt really looking at him and wow how does he know how silver's powers work this well???

but all is good until silver approaches Age 14 and shadow needs to consider how time travel works. because there is a very real chance he's gonna lose his son without the kid even dying. and he is Used To Grief but he's never experienced grief like this before. (i think in his many years he did also have a phase of not getting attached to others because he knows he'd have to grieve them later but he got over that but now he's REMINDED of it and like he's had friends family but he's only got The One Kid and wurgg.)

so he's just dreading it. considering talking to silver about this showing him the records but too afraid he's gonna box silver into an identity that might have retconned itself out of existence anyway and shadow knows what it's like to be defined by your misery so.

which of course means he spends too long pussyfooting and the Time Travelling happens and silver just shows up at the house one day with 14yrs worth of new trauma

i ran out of steam but anyways how do you connect to your son when he is both your son but also an ally you have rose tinted nostalgia for, a reminder of the first rough years of your existence and all the things you've lost and now you wonder if all the love you scrounged up to give him ever made a difference or whether it was all just doomed to end up like this

and silver gets the dilemma of how do you connect w your dad when you remember how much he loves you but also his past self got into an argument with you yesterday/three hundred years ago. and there's two versions of yourself running in parallel and one of them loves him so much and the other one doesn't even know who he is

inherently viewing each other as two different people and feeling like two different people shoved into the same perception and unwilling to let this fall apart for the half of love that's there yet so incapable of properly reconciling everything into a neat and tidy existence <3

also the sequel to that fic would be silver getting invited to a extreme gear race via dedicated silver timecapsule (it's always in the same spot and it works by putting in a message that gets sent to the future, silver reads it and goes back in time, and by him going back in time the message can be taken out of the capsule for a different one and the original message is retconned out of ever reaching the future and silver arriving in the past for whatever he was invited for becomes a minor paradox. to sonic and co it's like instant messaging because they only have to put the message in until the actual event and the timeline where they had to protect this thing doesn't exist)

anyways. when silver gets invited to something low stakes and silly, shadow decides to tag along because he wants to reconnect with his kid (who was just normal yesterday and now there is an infinitely deep rift between them) and silver cant bring himself to stop shadow (because suddenly since a day ago they're closer than ever) and what ensues is a cat and mouse conflict of silver trying to keep shadow's identity a secret from the people of the past as shadow tries to be the most obnoxious supportive dad ever

i'm actually growing to be incredibly fascinated by the many different attempts to add depth to amy from the basic characterization of "short tempered girly girl with a huge crush"

like obviously me talking about how chronicles keeps all that as the surface level of her character, but adds depth by making her just a tiny bit self aware and ashamed of what she's doing, but with no clue on how else to act

and boom amy is a bit similar where she's the trope of the Strong Independant Woman on the surface, but the short tempered girly girl with a huge crush is actually the inner layer she tries to hide because it doesn't fit her image

and like all the different prime amys are kinda interesting in that they're amys from worlds where sonic just doesn't Exist at all so all of them do their own things

or idw amy being forced to shed that old skin because she has to take up so many responsibilities that no one else is willing to bear when those simpler days are what she really wants to go back to

and just a Common layer to her being that she's just incredibly empathetic and propping up others is just part of who she is and what she wants to do, but she doesn't want to let herself be subservient to someone else either, she always wants to be on equal footing, and she's chasing that forever, and
