Day 9/40: Nathan Barato - Day 2: Neon Garden

(Thursday) Having closed up the artists from Wasteland, it is time to get down and groovy with house and techno at Neon Garden! I have to admit that this is my first time exploring this stage so I picked these songs because they sounded interesting. Our first artist in the garden is Nathan Barato!

"Feeding the Rhythm" is labeled as tech house, but I would pass it as techno. One of the main hallmarks of techno music is the repetition of a phrase for mostly the whole song and building layers on top of it. This contrasts with trance in that trance music seems to flow from left to right; it has repetitive phrases but builds into a climax. Techno music can be looped indefinitely and you wouldn't know otherwise.

For this song, the repeated line at 1:20 and the high note at 2:20 sound dissonant and a little eerie. This eeriness is what pulled me into the song, and although it may not encompass what a general techno song would sound like, it is a good introduction to techno's song structure.

Nathan Barato will be playing at Neon Garden on Day 2. I'm not sure what his set would sound like, but I would keep him in mind!
