How Weight Training Reverses The Aging Process And Why Everyone Needs To Lift Weights

Cardiovascular exercise is great, yoga is a fantastic way to center and relax the mind, but when it comes to reversing the aging process and keeping you as strong and independent as possible for as long as possible, nothing beats weight training. Younger folks tend to not think about the aging process and doing things to reverse it, but the reality is that everyone reading this article right now is getting older and unfortunately most people don’t pay attention to the aging process until they start seeing tangible signs of the passage of time. Having been surrounded by bodybuilders for the past 40 years, I have seen first hand the benefits of weight training for those in their forties, fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties, and in every case the men and women have lives that are exemplary compared to their peers who don’t lift weights. In this article we will highlight why everyone should consider incorporating weight training into their fitness routines as it can help you reverse many aspects of the aging process and create what gerontologists term “successful aging.” Which is defined as getting older with a low probability of disease, physical disability and maintaining high cognitive and physical function and having an active engagement with life in your later years.[3,4]
Unfortunately, here in the United States, the aging process is looked upon as a syndrome in need of “treatment” rather than a natural part of life that should be enjoyable to some extent. It’s a concept born from the experience of seeing the negative health outcomes of elderly men and women in this part of the world as in most cases the aging process is indeed a narrative of decline. The party line is that getting older means increased body fat, significant loss of muscle mass, loss of muscle strength and balance to the point of infirmity. Getting older also means having to deal with the onset of metabolic disease which we erroneously associate with aging. While most of the population will indeed one day suffer from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and osteoporosis, the irony is that none of this is a natural part of getting older and is preventable. What is commonly perceived as an inevitable consequence of growing older is often the end result of a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits. Elderly men and women in hunter gatherer societies and agricultural populations that live close to the earth with very active lifestyles have little incidence of metabolic disease and not nearly as much muscle loss as their Western counterparts. However, you don’t need to go join a tribe or leave town to live off the land in order to age gracefully as a proper diet and regular weight training will give you similar outcomes! Studies of older men and women who regularly engage in regular weight training do not suffer the same degrees of muscle loss, increased body fat bone loss and metabolic disease as those who do not. [2] If this is the case then why aren’t more people working out with weights and watching what they eat? It’s a difficult question to answer but part of the problem is that weight training is not as easy to do as getting on a treadmill or going for a run. Nor is it as promoted as other more trendy forms of exercise today like spin classes and dance based forms of exercise. Lack of knowledge is also a causative factor as because so many believe that aging inevitably comes with these infirmities, they fail to take the necessary steps to prevent them.
The specifics of the aging process is relatively easy to understand. The number cells that make up your body are kept at a relatively steady number through a process called, mitosis, or cellular division, which is in turn matched matched by the number of cells that die. This state of balance (called homeostasis) is necessary for optimal health, however such equilibrium cannot be maintained indefinitely as if it could, we would live forever and never get older. You see, all animals have a limited number of times that they can produce new cells to replace the ones lost, which is called the Hayflick limit. As we get older and closer to that limit, senescence sets in, which is a decline in the ability of our bodies’ cells to divide. We don’t feel the effects initially as it usually starts in our early thirties and continues on throughout our lives where it can becomes more evident. One theory is that the everyday occurrence of cellular reproduction leads to cumulative DNA damage, and cells begin to die or not function correctly as a result. This process, called apoptosis, may sound awful, but is actually beneficial as it acts a way of ‘cleaning up’ the cells that don’t work well, which benefits the healthy remaining cells. Taken as a whole, aging is our bodies decline in being able to deal with the environmental stress that inevitably destroys cellular tissue. Maintaining a balance between cells lost and cells created eventually becomes more and more difficult until a point is reached where cell losses far exceeds cellular replenishment and in time the organism dies.

For the average man or woman who does not engage in regular weight bearing activity, as much as half of total skeletal muscle mass is lost between the ages of 20 and 90 old years. Such drastic loss of muscle mass usually comes with an increase in overall body fat. Lean muscle mass is the most metabolically active tissue in our bodies, which means we burn the most calories maintaining it. Loss of muscle mass means a slowing down of overall metabolism and so if you consumed let’s say 2,000 calories everyday and your bodyweight was stable, eating that same amount of food would make gain excess body fat as your muscle mass drops over time. It’s why people complain of having a harder time staying lean as they get older, but is FAR less of an issue with older men and women who regularly train with weights. as studies suggest that lack of exercise- or more specifically weight bearing resistance exercise is one of the overriding causes of sacropenia.[5]

So, it’s not a given that you will lose large amounts of muscle mass as long as you have some form of resistance exercise in your regime, as the old adage ‘use it or lose it’ certainly applies when it comes to muscle mass. That being said, my experience over the past three decades as a trainer has been that if you start weight training in your forties or early fifties, most people reach a stage where they have muscle mass and are far stronger in their fifties and forties than they were in their twenties if they didn’t weight train when they were younger. Among those who have lifted weights their entire lives, the results are even more impressive. Not in their 20’s and not even in their thirties. You see, weight training is a progressive endeavor. The longer you do it, the more results you will get. That said, a young man or woman who might be blessed with amazing genetics still will not likely be as muscular and lean as an athlete with similar or even sub-par genetics who has been training for decades longer. It’s all about the time you put in rather than how old you are. A concept quite foreign to most given that almost all the fitness related marketing employs younger models and so the general public isn’t aware of how completely normal it is to look great in your fifties as long as you just keep training.

There are a few public figures who have helped showcase just what can be accomplished in the later years such as the late Jack LaLanne, who pioneered the modern gym industry and was a model of fitness up until his death at 96 years old. I had the honor or meeting Jack when he was in his 80’s and I was quite impressed not only by his energy and vigor, but also that fact that he really seemed to be enjoying every second of life, a common attribute of those who make fitness a balanced part of their lives. There is also the inspiring Ernestine Shepherd, listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest bodybuilder of her time and who is quite a figure on the internet and social media. However, for every public figure there are hundreds of thousands of men and women training regularly who are up there in age but look truly inspiring! My friend and lifetime natural bodybuilder, the late great Kenny Hall started competing in his twenties and kept on winning titles for the next half a century. His greatest accomplishment was winning the winning such titles as Mr. Universe over-40 and Pro Mr. America over-50, all while being lifetime drug-free, but what amazed us all was that he was able to maintain a level of muscle mass and definition that allowed him to easily best competitors who were decades younger than he was up until he retired in his 70’s. Not so much because he thought he couldn’t keep going but because he wanted others to have a chance to win as well! Kenny passed away in his late 80’s and enjoyed quite a life thanks to the robust health that his weight training program gave him. But the positive effects of weight training on aging are not just anecdotal, research shows that those who engage in intense weight training over the course of their lifetime can demonstrate physical qualities and abilities equal to if not exceeding that of untrained individuals in their twenties while well into their fifth decade of life.[6,7] Short term studies also show that resistance exercises like weight training increases the ability of our muscles to synthesize proteins and in so doing minimizes the advent of skeletal muscle decline over the years. 6,7]
How Weight Lifting Reverses Osteoporosis
As we get older it is not only our muscles that get significantly weaker without added physical activity but also our bones. Increased bone porosity and reduction in bone mass can lead to the debilitating effects of osteoporosis. Which as we know can be both reversed and prevented by the implementation of weight bearing activities such as weight training. There are some aspects of the aging process that are beyond our control. With the advance of years comes a natural decrease in the speed of nerve conduction, reduction in peak cardiovascular ability as well as a decline in kidney and other organ functions. As mentioned earlier, our cells have a limited number of reproductions over the course of our lifetimes and as you get older the motor units (motoneurons) in your fast twitch muscles begin to die. It isn’t something you notice even though it starts fairly early in your late twenties and thirties as our bodies have a remarkable way of compensating. For example, the muscles in your leg might have approximately 250 motor units and each motor unit (the technical term is motoneuron) has as many as a thousand muscle fibers under its control. This ratio of motor units to muscle fiber is known as an innervation ratio and in this case would be 1,000 muscle fibers per motoneuron.
Over time, the 250 motor units in your leg muscle may drop by as much as half to 125 muscle fibers by the time you are 70 years old. Now you would think that this would make you only half as strong as you were before, but it isn’t that straightforward. We lose muscle fibers at a much slower rate than motor units, so you would have only lost 10% of the muscle fiber in that leg muscle by the age of 70. However, the remaining 125 motor units will sprout new branches to the muscle fibers that have lost their motor units to activate them and do more work than they did before. As a result, there is a higher innervation ratio. In this example it could be a total of 1,500 muscle fibers per motoneuron as our motor units take control of more muscle fibers as a way of helping us retain our strength as we get older. (And some would argue that it sets the stage for greater absolute strength.)

Our nervous system and the mechanisms behind muscle contraction slow down over time as part of the aging process as well. Despite these natural declines, regular resistance type exercise and an overall active lifestyle can help minimize and offset any adverse consequences form these changes in our bodies. As such the importance of building as much muscle as possible becomes readily apparent as the more muscle mass you are able to build up, the more strength, coordination and motor skills you will have as you get older and the longer it will take before you see a decline in ability. Keep in mind that without the use of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs, even the most genetically gifted men and women don’t build that much muscle. The lowland gorilla look that so many associate with weight training is sadly a reflection of drug use more so than weight training as you’ll never look like the monsters you see in the magazines if you train naturally. A point that is sadly lost on sadly on the millions of women who pursue aerobic type exercises and lower impact activities like yoga out of a misplaced fear of developing man-sized muscles. The sad part is that because women have naturally lower muscle and bone mass than men, weight training is even more important for them as they get older. Hormone Replacement Isn’t The Answer
Our hormones also play a role in the reduction of our muscle mass as we get older. Testosterone, growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) help our bodies’ build and maintain muscle mass but there is a marked reduction in production as we get older. High intensity weight training has been shown to increase all three hormones [9,10,11] naturally and within standard human parameters. It might sound like a good idea to forgo weight training and instead turn to hormone replacement therapies but research shows that this reduction in hormones may be a key mechanism that allows us to live longer. Mammalian models with reduced growth hormone (GH) and/or IGF-1 appear to live longer [12,13] and while the administration of testosterone replacement therapy for men has become a lucrative and fast growing industry here in the United States, presently available data does not justify the broad use of such hormones for anti-aging purposes.[14,15] With most of our medical anti-aging focus resting on the shoulders of pharmaceutical companies trying to find a pill form solution to the combat the effects of the march of time, comparatively little is invested in researching protocols that are far less potentially lucrative such as weight training.

The science of Gerontology has only just started to pay attention to the amazing examples set by those engaged in a lifetime of weight training and drug free bodybuilding, and research reveals that involvement in such activities can “create possibilities for people to age positively and reconstruct what aging “normally” means.”[2,16,17,18] Such studies also highlight the self-fulfilling prophecy that our society’s acceptance of advancing age as a time of disengagement, dysfunction and disease goes a long way in our not taking action to change this. For as long as we perceive aging as a downward trajectory of physical and mental deterioration, we are doomed to experience it as such. One of the common attributes of men and women involved in weight training activities over the course of their lives and who exhibit remarkable physicality into the later sixth decades of life is what was termed a ‘mondadic styled’ body. In short, they focused on who they were and what they were doing as opposed to being influenced by what society expected them to be. Or by the examples of their peers aged in keeping with narrative of rapid decline. Without turning to hormonal solutions that can cause more problems than they solve, these men and women centered themselves on following a healthy. One that allows them to significantly offset the impact of aging and achieve what we are all looking for; namely twilight years that aren’t defined by disease and disability but instead is filled with engagement with life on all levels. You don’t need drugs or DeLeon’s fabled fountain of youth, you just need to make weight training and a proper diet part of your life at all times.

How Weight Training Reverses The Aging Process And Why Everyone Needs To Lift Weights
Aging is essentially loss of proteins over time, weight training is about increasing protein cells in your body and as simple as this sounds, it’s the very basic premise behind the importance of weight training or any form of resistance exercise as a part of everyone’s fitness program. Cardiovascular exercise is great, yoga is a fantastic way to center and relax the mind, but when it comes to reversing the aging process and keeping you as strong and independent as possible for as long as possible, nothing beats weight training. Younger folks tend to not think about the aging process and doing things to reverse it, but the reality is that everyone reading this article right now is getting older and unfortunately most people don’t pay attention to the aging process until they start seeing tangible signs of the passage of time. At which point, weight training can help, but it is always best to incorporate some form of weight training in your regular routine at all time, before you start seeing Father Time’s effects on your body. Thanks to advances in medicine, improvements in living conditions and food availability, people are living longer than they ever did. So much so that by the year 2030 there will be more than twice the number of Americans over the age of 65 than there was in the year 2000.[1] The problem is that living longer has little to do with having a better quality of life as you get older. Drugs can help extend your life in many ways but the only way to truly improve your health is to work for it, and the addition of a sound weight training program can add some truly good years to your life. Having been surrounded by bodybuilders for the past 40 years, I have seen first hand the benefits of weight training for those in their forties, fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties, and in every case the men and women have lives that are exemplary compared to their peers who don’t lift weights. In this article we will highlight why everyone should consider incorporating weight training into their fitness routines as it can help you reverse many aspects of the aging process and create what gerontologists term “successful aging.” Which is defined as getting older with a low probability of disease, physical disability and maintaining high cognitive and physical function and having an active engagement with life in your later years.[3,4]
Unfortunately, here in the United States, the aging process is looked upon as a syndrome in need of “treatment” rather than a natural part of life that should be enjoyable to some extent. It’s a concept born from the experience of seeing the negative health outcomes of elderly men and women in this part of the world as in most cases the aging process is indeed a narrative of decline. The party line is that getting older means increased body fat, significant loss of muscle mass, loss of muscle strength and balance to the point of infirmity. Getting older also means having to deal with the onset of metabolic disease which we erroneously associate with aging. While most of the population will indeed one day suffer from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and osteoporosis, the irony is that none of this is a natural part of getting older and is preventable. What is commonly perceived as an inevitable consequence of growing older is often the end result of a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits. Elderly men and women in hunter gatherer societies and agricultural populations that live close to the earth with very active lifestyles have little incidence of metabolic disease and not nearly as much muscle loss as their Western counterparts. However, you don’t need to go join a tribe or leave town to live off the land in order to age gracefully as a proper diet and regular weight training will give you similar outcomes! Studies of older men and women who regularly engage in regular weight training do not suffer the same degrees of muscle loss, increased body fat bone loss and metabolic disease as those who do not. [2] If this is the case then why aren’t more people working out with weights and watching what they eat? It’s a difficult question to answer but part of the problem is that weight training is not as easy to do as getting on a treadmill or going for a run. Nor is it as promoted as other more trendy forms of exercise today like spin classes and dance based forms of exercise. Lack of knowledge is also a causative factor as because so many believe that aging inevitably comes with these infirmities, they fail to take the necessary steps to prevent them.
The specifics of the aging process is relatively easy to understand. The number cells that make up your body are kept at a relatively steady number through a process called, mitosis, or cellular division, which is in turn matched matched by the number of cells that die. This state of balance (called homeostasis) is necessary for optimal health, however such equilibrium cannot be maintained indefinitely as if it could, we would live forever and never get older. You see, all animals have a limited number of times that they can produce new cells to replace the ones lost, which is called the Hayflick limit. As we get older and closer to that limit, senescence sets in, which is a decline in the ability of our bodies’ cells to divide. We don’t feel the effects initially as it usually starts in our early thirties and continues on throughout our lives where it can becomes more evident. One theory is that the everyday occurrence of cellular reproduction leads to cumulative DNA damage, and cells begin to die or not function correctly as a result. This process, called apoptosis, may sound awful, but is actually beneficial as it acts a way of ‘cleaning up’ the cells that don’t work well, which benefits the healthy remaining cells. Taken as a whole, aging is our bodies decline in being able to deal with the environmental stress that inevitably destroys cellular tissue. Maintaining a balance between cells lost and cells created eventually becomes more and more difficult until a point is reached where cell losses far exceeds cellular replenishment and in time the organism dies.
Weight Training Prevents and Can Reverse Loss Of Muscle Mass Due To Aging
Building muscle however through the use of a well executed weight training program of sufficient intensity is a way of increasing our bodies’ adaptive response to stress. As we get older one of the main aspects working against us from being as strong and muscular as we are in our younger years is a process called sarcopenia. Sarcopenia, which means literally ‘poverty of the flesh’, refers to the loss of skeletal muscle mass that comes with aging. We need muscle mass to be able to move and it is central to our ability to do just about all physical activity. As such, significant muscle mass losses can lead to loss of independence, overall weakness and frailty. For the average man or woman who does not engage in regular weight bearing activity, as much as half of total skeletal muscle mass is lost between the ages of 20 and 90 old years. Such drastic loss of muscle mass usually comes with an increase in overall body fat. Lean muscle mass is the most metabolically active tissue in our bodies, which means we burn the most calories maintaining it. Loss of muscle mass means a slowing down of overall metabolism and so if you consumed let’s say 2,000 calories everyday and your bodyweight was stable, eating that same amount of food would make gain excess body fat as your muscle mass drops over time. It’s why people complain of having a harder time staying lean as they get older, but is FAR less of an issue with older men and women who regularly train with weights. as studies suggest that lack of exercise- or more specifically weight bearing resistance exercise is one of the overriding causes of sacropenia.[5]
Weight Training Can Help You Maintain An Impressive Amount Of Muscle As You Get Older
So, it’s not a given that you will lose large amounts of muscle mass as long as you have some form of resistance exercise in your regime, as the old adage ‘use it or lose it’ certainly applies when it comes to muscle mass. Will Raw Milk Save Dairy Farmers?
As corporations continue to take control of the food supply, small family farms are giving way to concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) mass producing a surplus of poor-quality food. Conventional milk is a prime example. Milk surpluses have led the price of milk to plummet.
In Wisconsin, farmers are getting nearly 40 percent less for their milk than they were in 2014. Nearly 700 dairy farms closed in the state in 2018, most of them small operations.1
As CAFOs became the norm for dairy farms (even in idyllic-seeming dairy states like Vermont), farmers trying to survive were forced to grow their herds and increase milk production using artificial (drug- and hormone-based) methods, among others (like feeding cows an unnatural amount of grain-based food, 24-hour confinement and increased numbers of milkings per day).
Such was the case for Pennsylvania dairy farmer Edwin Shank, who increased his herd size to 350 cows, used growth hormones and milked cows three times a day — only to face financial ruin as milk prices dropped in the 2000s.
Shank’s story has a happy ending, though, as he is one of a growing number of farmers who’ve been able to not only climb their way out of a failing industry, but also thrive by switching over to a profitable niche market: raw milk.2

Judith McGeary, an attorney and board member with the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, told Civil Eats, “Dairy is an incredibly consolidated system. The farmer has no bargaining power … Raw milk provides this polar opposite; you have this product in high demand by consumers who value it, and all that profit goes to the farmer.”3
Shank’s farm, The Family Cow, is now the largest raw-milk producer in Pennsylvania, taking advantage of increasing interest in this fresh, wholesome food. Likewise, Charlotte Smith, a farmer in Oregon, is able to stay in business by milking just three cows, the number the state law allows for raw milk farmers.
“I milk three cows and my neighbor who milks 300 cows could probably make as much money as me if he sold all his cows and milked three,” she told Civil Eats.4 Meanwhile, the price of conventional milk has gone so low that an average-sized dairy farm in Vermont (about 125 cows) may operate at a loss of $100,000 a year.5
But for Organic Pastures, the largest raw milk dairy in California, sales grew 18 percent from January 2018 to January 2019. Likewise, as conventional milk farmers are shutting down, licenses for raw milk dairies climbed from six in 2006 in Washington state to 32 in 2019. And in New York, permits for on-the-farm sales of raw milk increased from 12 to 37 over the last several years.6
CAFOs Destroy Rural Communities
Across the U.S. Midwest, small farms that once raised a mix of crops and livestock over the course of generations have been disappearing, replaced by agribusiness giants growing monocrops of corn and soy and raising thousands of chickens and pigs in inhumane CAFOs.
In Missouri, for instance, the 23,000 pig farmer operations that existed in 1985 have dwindled to about 2,000, while the number of independent cattle farms has also dropped by 40 percent.7 The trickle-down effect put not only the small farmers out of business but also the communities that once thrived around them. The Guardian reported:8
“In 1990, small and medium-sized farms accounted for nearly half of all agricultural production in the U.S.. Now it is less than a quarter. As the medium-sized family farms retreated, the businesses they helped support disappeared. At one time, there were 1.6 million independent farms in the U.S. Today, there are about 25,000 contract farms that raise most U.S. poultry, with many of them raising upward of half a million birds annually.9
In many rural areas, there’s only one (or maybe two) big chicken companies in town, and farmers have no choice but to enter into exclusive contracts that, for many, saddle them with debt and little recourse if the relationship sours. The story is similar among big pig producers.
As noted by The Guardian, “Iowa Select Farms has one of the fastest-growing CAFO operations in the country, with 800 farms spread through half of the counties in Iowa. Yet few of the economic benefits spill down to the communities around them. Workers are often poorly paid; many are bussed in.”10

Only about 3 percent of Americans (more than 9 million people) regularly consume raw milk, but the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) states this could offer a major push to rural economies.
In fact, if 100 farms in Wisconsin could provide raw milk to 50 local families, it would lead to more than $10 million in “increased wealth and well-being” for Wisconsin residents.11
OCA further noted, “A boost like that is exactly what rural economies need as U.S. dairy farmers continue going out of business at an unsustainable rate. In 1950, there were about 3.5 million farms with milking cows. By 2016, there were only 41,809. Between 2015 and 2016, 1725 dairy farms went under.”12
How Risky Is Raw Milk, Really?
Public health agencies claim that raw milk is simply too risky for your health to consume, but how dangerous is it, really? Research published in PLOS Currents revealed that while the legal distribution of raw milk has been on the rise, the rate of illnesses associated with raw milk have been on the decline since 2010.
“Controlling for growth in population and consumption, the outbreak rate has effectively decreased by 74 percent since 2005,” the researchers wrote.13
Further, citing evidence of the “immunological effects” of raw milk consumption to offer benefits against childhood asthma and respiratory illness, the researchers suggested, “given the potential for significant public health benefits which could be gained from a reduction in immunological disorders, a re-evaluation of the risk/benefit profile of unpasteurized milk is in order.”
It’s also essential to point out that leafy greens are actually the No. 1 source of food poisoning in the U.S, accounting for nearly half of all illnesses.14 But, as Civil Eats noted, “no one is calling on Americans to stop eating salads.”15CAFO meats are also notoriously dirty.
One study by the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) found that chicken samples gathered at the end of production after having been cut into parts, as you would purchase in the grocery store, had an astonishing positive rate of 26.2 percent contamination with salmonella.16
Meanwhile, it’s not without irony that raw milk continues to be targeted as an unsafe food while the government-subsidized CAFO model’s illness outbreaks are minimized or glossed over. For example, a CDC report on 121 milk outbreaks between 1993 and 2006 focuses on the 73 raw milk outbreaks and barely mentions the 48 involving pasteurized milk.
That same report mentions that there were 4,413 illnesses reported as a result of drinking milk, of which 1,571 were from raw milk. But, rather than pointing out that more illnesses — 2,842 — were from pasteurized milk, they leave it for you to figure out.17 That said, many raw milk producers hold their products to even higher standards than are observed for pasteurized milk.
Take The Family Cow, for example. They run 10 milk sanitation and herd health tests, only three of which are required to sell milk to a pasteurizer. The other seven are extra tests required in Pennsylvania for those selling raw milk directly for human consumption.18
This means the milk produced by CAFOs that ends up pasteurized and shipped to grocery stores across the U.S. may very well be contaminated from the start — it’s only the pasteurization process that makes it “safe.” Raw milk, on the other hand, is required to be safe from the start.
Anti-Inflammatory Health Benefits of Raw Milk
While raw milk is noninflammatory and inhibits MAST cell release of histamines, pasteurized milk is the most allergenic food in the U.S., Mark McAfee, founder and chairman of the Raw Milk Institute (RAWMI), notes. “[I]ntestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP), a potent endogenous anti-inflammatory enzyme, is directly stimulated by various components of milk (e.g., casein, calcium, lactose and even fat),” researchers wrote in Medical Hypotheses,19 “… and detoxifies proinflammatory microbial components … making them unable to trigger inflammatory responses and generate chronic low-grade inflammation leading to insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, Type-2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity, known risk factors for CVD [cardiovascular disease].”
Raw milk also contains protective components that aren’t found in pasteurized milk, including antibodies and beneficial bacteria that help to kill pathogens in the milk, as well as compounds that prevent pathogen absorption across the intestinal wall. Big Sugar and Coke Conspiracy Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola The rise of chronic metabolic disease in the U.S. follows the growth of the U.S. sugar industry and increases in per capita sugar consumption. Today, we consume about 20 times more sugar than our ancestors did, and we have very little control over the amount since what was once a condiment has now become a dietary staple added to countless processed and fast foods.1 Yet, if you were to visit with a conventional nutritionist, you'd likely still hear rhetoric that's been parroted since the 1950s — incorrect and misleading rhetoric at that — that "a calorie is a calorie" and obesity is the result of consuming more calories than you expend. Gary Taubes, co-founder of the Nutrition Science Initiative and the author of "The Case Against Sugar," wrote in The New York Times:2 "When it comes to weight gain, the sugar industry and purveyors of sugary beverages still insist, a calorie is a calorie, regardless of its source, so guidelines that single out sugar as a dietary evil are not evidence-based. Surprisingly, the scientific consensus is technically in agreement. It holds that obesity is caused 'by a lack of energy balance … '" Yet, as Taubes pointed out, researchers have known since the 1960s that your body metabolizes different types of carbohydrates, like glucose and fructose, in different ways, causing very different hormonal and physiological responses that absolutely may influence fat accumulation and metabolism.3 "In light of this research, arguing today that your body fat responds to everything you eat the exact same way is almost inconceivably naïve," Taubes said, "But don't blame the sugar industry for perpetuating this view. Blame the researchers and the nutrition authorities."4 'Energy Balance' Theory Perpetuated by Nutritionists, Soda Industry Many conventional nutritionists are among the top supporters of the energy balance theory, which still suggests that weight gain is simply a matter of consuming more calories than you burn off. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute is among those prominent government organizations still perpetuating this myth5 — alongside soda giants who obviously have a vested interest in keeping sugar's "OK-in-moderation" reputation. In 2015, for instance, Coca-Cola Co. was outed for secretly funding and supporting the Global Energy Balance Network, a nonprofit front group that promoted exercise as the solution to obesity while significantly downplaying the role of diet and sugary beverages in the weight loss equation.6 Public health authorities accused the group of using tobacco-industry tactics to raise doubts about the health hazards of soda, and a letter signed by more than three dozen scientists said the group was spreading "scientific nonsense."7 By December 2015, the Global Energy Balance Network announced it would be shutting down, with Coca-Cola claiming it was working on increased transparency. However, as reported by CrossFit bloggers Russell Berger and Russ Greene, the soda industry maintains many close ties with organizations that continue to promote the energy balance myth (and directly funds such organizations).8 Among them: The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), which was funded by Coca-Cola until 2015. They also founded a program called "Energy Balance 4 Kids With Play" in partnership with the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF), "an industry organization representing Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestle, General Mills and other distributers of sugar-sweetened products."9 "The program promotes the concept of energy balance among children and parents through registered dietitians," Berger noted.10 The International Food Information Council Foundation, which is funded by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, promotes the idea that "when it comes to weight management or weight loss, it's the total calories that matters most." The National Institutes of Health "We Can!" Campaign. Coca-Cola has channeled millions of dollars to the NIH Foundation. The campaign advises drinking soda only "once in a while" and suggests balancing out days when kids eat lots of high-sugar foods/drinks with more physical activity. The American College of Sports Medicine, which is also funded by Coca-Cola, suggests that while water should be your first choice of beverage, "there is no harm in drinking juice or even soda in moderation." The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which also receives funding from Coca-Cola via the CDC Foundation, also promotes "energy balance," assuring that: "Healthy eating is all about balance. You can enjoy your favorite foods even if they are high in calories, fat or added sugars. The key is eating them only once in a while … " How the Soda Industry Downplays the Health Risks of Excess Sugar While leveraging the energy balance theory via public health organizations, the soda industry also uses a variety of other smoke-and-mirrors tactics to distract the public from the true health risks of consuming sugary beverages. One of their favorites is blaming obesity on lack of exercise and suggesting that you can somehow out-exercise the effects of a poor diet, which you cannot. Berger noted:11 "Perhaps the biggest trick of Big Soda nutrition science is to promote physical activity instead of fitness and weight loss. Weight loss and fitness require limiting the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages. Generic references to physical activity, however, may actually encourage the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, especially when the same organizations promote the idea of "earning" sugar by burning off additional calories through daily activity." There are other stealthy tricks too, like industry-funded health organizations suggesting metabolic syndrome is the result of obesity and can be remedied with physical activity. But independent studies have suggested insulin resistance, caused by overconsumption of sugars, especially fructose, may, in fact, be a primary cause behind metabolic syndrome. For instance, a meta-review published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that once you reach 18 percent of your daily calories from added sugar, there's a two-fold increase in metabolic harm that promotes pre-diabetes and diabetes.12 Moreover, research suggests sugary beverages are to blame for about 183,000 deaths worldwide each year, including 133,000 diabetes deaths, 44,000 heart disease deaths, and 6,000 cancer deaths. By focusing on obesity and physical activity, the soda industry very carefully avoids bringing attention to the role sugar and insulin resistance play in this increasingly common chronic condition. Another common tactic, as Berger pointed out, is describing chronic disease and obesity as "complex" issues. While it's true that disease can be complex, the soda industry uses this term as a form of false nutritional propaganda. Berger wrote:13 "Big Soda speaks of the complexity of addressing and identifying the causes of chronic disease. The label of complexity rules out simple treatments like 'stop drinking sugar' and makes models of chronic disease based on overconsumption of sugar seem oversimplified and rash." Food Industry Attacks Respected Exercise Scientist for Dissing Sugar Dr. Timothy Noakes, is a professor of exercise science and sports medicine at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a long-time low-carb advocate. He is perhaps best known for the book, "Waterlogged: The Serious Problem of Overhydration in Endurance Sports," which suggests that overhydrating will actually worsen athletic performance, not improve it. He also widely promotes a low-carb, high-fat diet, including for children. In 2014, he tweeted the recommendation that babies should be weaned onto low-carbohydrate diets — a far cry from the processed cereals most dieticians and pediatricians recommend. The advice resulted in backlash from Claire Julsing Strydom, the president of South Africa's dietetics association, ADSA, (and also a consultant for Kellogg's) and others who reported him for "unprofessional conduct." ADSA itself also has additional ties to cereal giant Kellogg's and reportedly gets more than one-third of its revenue from corporate sponsors such as Nestle, Unilver and Huletts Sugar. South Africa's Health Professions Council (HPCSA) is reviewing whether to strip Noakes of his medical license, but there's much more to this story than meets the eye. Greene uncovered an elaborate backstory that reveals the case against Noakes to be nothing more than a witch hunt aimed at protecting the interests of the junk food industry, which exerts major influence over South Africa's dietary guidelines. I will also be interviewing Noakes in April, so watch for what I'm sure will be a revealing interview in the months to come. In short, Greene reported:14 "To summarize: [A] former ILSI [International Life Sciences Institute, a Coca-Cola proxy organization] South Africa president convinced the HPCSA to charge Noakes, another former ILSI South Africa president testified as an expert witness against him, and an ILSI-funded researcher consulted for the legal team prosecuting him. And yet, not a single news story has connected ILSI to the Noakes trial. … The HPCSA will release its final decision on Noakes on April 21, 2017. Noakes is cautiously optimistic. It seems unlikely that HPCSA will rule that his 2014 tweet constituted a doctor-patient relationship. Strydom herself has admitted that Noakes' tweet did not qualify as such a relationship. The case against Noakes falls apart without that crucial element. Noakes even thinks it's possible that his 900 slides and 30-[plus] hours of testimony will convince South Africa to discard its industry-corrupted dietary guidelines. Perhaps." 'The Case Against Sugar' — Is Sugar Actually a Drug? Taubes' excellent book, "The Case Against Sugar," expertly documents sugar's link to chronic disease and much more, including whether sugar should more aptly be described as a drug instead of a food. It doesn't cause the immediate symptoms of intoxication, like dizziness, staggering, slurring of speech or euphoria, associated with other "drugs," yet perhaps this only allowed its long-term medical consequences to go "unasked and unanswered." "Most of us today will never know if we suffer even subtle withdrawal symptoms from sugar, because we'll never go long enough without it to find out," Taubes wrote, continuing:15 "Sugar historians consider the drug comparison to be fitting in part because sugar is one of a handful of 'drug foods' … that came out of the tropics, and on which European empires were built from the 16th century onward — the others being tea, coffee, chocolate, rum and tobacco." Interestingly, Taubes claims that sugar has likely killed more people than tobacco, and that tobacco wouldn't have killed as many people as it did without sugar. This is a fascinating story in and of itself, which Taubes details in greater depth in his book. " … [S]ugar was, and still is, a critical ingredient in the American blended-tobacco cigarette, the first of which was Camel. It's this 'marriage of tobacco and sugar,' as a sugar-industry report described it in 1950, that makes for the 'mild' experience of smoking cigarettes as compared with cigars and, perhaps more important, makes it possible for most of us to inhale cigarette smoke and draw it deep into our lungs."16 It's also known that sugar induces similar responses in the "reward centers" of the human brain as other additive substances, like nicotine, cocaine, heroin and alcohol. The 12-step Alcoholics Anonymous program even recommends consuming sweets in lieu of alcohol to ward off a craving for a drink. Today, "Sugar has become an ingredient in prepared and packaged foods so ubiquitous it can only be avoided by concerted and determined effort," Taubes wrote, which is, of course, precisely the problem, especially as realization grows that simply "moderating" sugar may not be enough. Taubes continued:17 "The traditional response to the how-little-is-too-much question is that we should eat sugar in moderation — not eat too much of it. But we only know we're consuming too much when we're getting fatter or manifesting other symptoms of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome … Any discussion of how little sugar is too much also has to account for the possibility that sugar is a drug and perhaps addictive. Trying to consume sugar in moderation, however it's defined, in a world in which substantial sugar consumption is the norm and virtually unavoidable, is likely to be no more successful for some of us than trying to smoke cigarettes in moderation — just a few a day, rather than a whole pack … If sugar consumption is a slippery slope, then advocating moderation is not a meaningful concept." Breaking Free From Sugar's Hold Once you understand the close ties between the soda and junk-food industries and public health organizations' dietary recommendations, it becomes clear that relying solely on them for nutritional advice puts your health at risk. And once you understand the health risks of sugar, including the fact that it's not an issue of extra calories but the kind of calories, it may motivate you to want to cut back, or eliminate, this substance from your diet and that of your children. The bright side is that once you cut down on added sugars and other net carbs (total carbs minus fiber), which will allow your body to start burning fat as its primary fuel again, the sugar cravings will disappear and avoiding it won't feel like such a struggle. In the meantime, if a sugar craving strikes, fit in a quick workout, drink a cup of organic black coffee, or eat something sour (like fermented vegetables or lemon water). All can help you kick your sugar cravings to the curb. "To the sugar industry, the nutritionists' dogmatic belief that obesity is a calorie overconsumption problem and a calorie is a calorie has been the gift that keeps on giving. So long as nutrition and obesity authorities insist that this is true, then the sugar industry can rightfully defend its product on the basis that the calories from sugar are no better nor worse than those from steak or grapefruit or ice cream — perhaps even kale or quinoa. We can't have it both ways," Taubes concluded.18
