When we met
Tumblr media
Chapter 9
"Nix wake up, we are late for the meeting with Sink and Strayer, get up, get out of the freaking bed" Lane was running around the loft Nix had been billeted to.
She was supposed to share a house with Katie, Mia and/or Dani depending on which of the nurses had their shift at the clearing station or field hospital, but she was never there, she spent most nights with Nix.
"Come on Nix, they want back at the regiment, let's go, something's up, Strayer's order" Lane was now fully dressed and slightly pissed off.
"Ok go ahead, I'll be right there" Nix mumbled down in his pillow.
"Now Nix, we only got ten minutes" Lane was pulling Nix out of the bed.
"Don't make me get Winters up here, he is waiting downstairs" Lane pulled Nix out of bed and got him dressed in record time.
Nix was ranting about how he thought the campaign in Holland should continue.
"I mean, we are the only unit in the group who have the Germans on the German side of the Rhine, If we had taken Antwerp, and I am not saying that would have been easy, we would be over the River, well supplied and have the Krauts on their heels, now if I can Ike on the Phone, are you two listening to me?" Nix asked
Lane had spaced out while he was talking, and Winters was used to Nix's ranting, so he just let him rant.
"Oh honey, we are hanging on every word" Lane cooed to Nix.
They walked into the HQ, Heyliger was already there.
"They called you too" Winters asked him
"Yeah, whatever is going on Sink is not happy" Heyliger told him.
"Nixon, Heyliger, Easterday" Sink called out and motioned them over
"Meet colonel Dobie of the British first Airborne, Captain Nixon and Captain Easterday is our second battalion S2's, first lieutenant Moose Heyliger"
Dobie did a double take of Lane, now there was a pretty woman, wondering how she made it into the Airborne, and there was definitely something going on between the two captains.
"The Brits lost 8000 men, when Market-Garden fell on its ass, which is why Colonel Dobie has been tasked with coordinating some kind of rescue operation for the red devils who is trapped at Arnhem side" Sink told Nixon, Lane and Heyliger
"The Dutch resistances are harboring 140 of my chaps here, just outside a Jerry held town just 15 miles north of the river, they make their way to the river bank and assemble by the woods here tonight" Dobie said and pointed to a place on the map placed before them.
"Pick a team from Easy company and get them back across the Rhine as fast as possible" Strayer said
"A hundred and forty men" Nixon said
"The Canadian engineers have supplied six boats, the rendezvous point is on isolated land, and I swam it myself last night. At approximately 00.30 hours I will signal the V for victory with a hand-held red torch, that would be a hand-held red flashlight," Dobie pointed to the RP. On a map on the wall and turned to Nixon and Lane.
"All right we call this operation Pegasus, ok Bob your second battalion is on the spot, get it done" Sink said to Strayer.
Strayer turned to Nixon "Captain Nixon assist Colonel Dobie in any way possible, you need anything at all you come to me" Strayer said to Nixon
"I can hardly ask for more" Dobie said
Lane, Dobie, Heyliger and Nixon were discussing the details of the operation; Lane had heard rumors about the mad colonel from Arnhem. He didn't seem like a man who made rash decisions, but then again he did swim the Rhine and the water was freezing this time of year.
Lane nudges Nix, "Maybe we should take a look at the maps" she whispered to him, she had chosen to stay quiet, she hadn't figured out what the colonels' take on women in the army was yet.
"Enemy dispositions map are in the S2, we should take a look at that" Nix led the group to the S2 section of the HQ.
Lane dumped her tired body down into her desk chair and sighed, the group gathered around the table, "Do you have an opinion on this operation, or are you just another pretty face" Dobie asked her
"Noā€¦ I mean yesā€¦I mean" Lane looked at Nix; she wasn't sure how to get out of the verbal mess she just made.
"What the captain is trying to say is, that she does have an opinion on all this, just like she has an opinion on everything else that goes on around here" Nix laughed.
"Hey, be nice" Lane smiled to Nix
Oh yah, there was definitely something going on between the two of them, the colonel thought to himself, it was nice to see something good come out of this messy war.
"So what's your take on this" Dobie asked Lane
"Well we need to execute fast, speed is the key and are you absolutely sure about the Intel?" Lane was skeptical.
"Positive and I know my men, they will be ready by the time we get there" Dobie smiled, yah she was a hard ass, and he was sure she earned her rank the hard way.
Winters had been tasked with writing combat reports and Strayer wanted a complete list of whatever the 34th left behind; he was disappointed, having to write reports instead of help planning and executing the operation, was not what he would have liked to.
He walked into the aid station, he was searching for Katie, when he ran into Mia, he stopped her; the poor nurse was stressed out, and seemed to be running in circles.
"Mia, Mia" Winters tried to get her attention.
Mia did even acknowledge him "lieutenant MacKall" Winters then called
"Captain Winters, Sir" Mia said
"you wouldn't happen to know where Doctor Hendrick is."
"She is in her office, Sir" Mia started to walk away.
"Lieutenant MacKall, get some rest, or I am telling the first sergeant, that you aren't taking care of yourself"
"Sir" Mia walked off mumbling something about overprotective men.
Winters found Katie, she got up from her chair when he opened the door "Dick, I am glad to see you, I got something for you" Katie held out a complete list of medical supplies, left behind by the 34th.
Winters looked at it "You are a lifesaver, thank you" he kissed Katie on the cheek.
"No problem, I figured the regiment would want a complete list of supplies" Katie looked at Winters, he looked like a man who didn't get enough sleep.
"Dick you and me, tonight, a hot meal and a warm bed, no excuses" Katie said
"I want to, but Easy is going on a mission" Winters said
"Dick it's not your job to take care of Easy anymore, its Moose's, so relax Easy is in good hands" Katie said
"I know, stop by my office at eight" Winters kissed Katie and shut the door
It had gotten dark out; Katie was on her way to meet Winters in his office.
She had only just gotten there when Moose, Lane and Nixon came knocking on the door.
Zelinsky, Winters orderly was there and Nixon came running up the stairs "Hey Dick you finish your novel yet" Nixon said referring to the report of the incident, the attack at the crossroad.
He looked at the stack of papers on Winters desk again "That's a lot of Homework" He commented, and bent down and kissed Katie on the cheek.
Moose came walking in after him "I thought executive officer was supposed to be a fun job" Moose said.
Nixon turned to Zelinsky and asked "Who are you?"
"Zelinsky sir" The orderly answered
"Who is he" Nixon asked Winters
"Zelinsky is my orderly," Winters said
Nixon let out a whistle and looked at Katie "Do you have an orderly"
"Well rang does has I privileges" Moose said
Katie smiled "Yes I do, I have Mia" Katie joked
Nixon looked at Zelinsky "Orderly, I bet you get things like coffee" Nixon said
"Black no sugar and a bacon sandwich" Nixon said
"Leave the poor kid alone" Katie said and sat down on Winters desk, he tried to get her off it, but all he got was a smile and dirty answer.
"Here give this to Colonel Sink with my compliments," Winters said and handed Nixon two pages of paper.
"All that for two pages, guess that's going to take awhile" Nixon said referring to the supply list he had to type out.
"Yeah so matter of fact it will, want a job" Winters was a tad upset
"There it is, I think that somebody wish they were back with Easy company, Moose" Nixon said smirking
"Are you two just here to gloat" Winters said
"No just to rub it in a little bit, Moose is going to lead his first mission as company commander" Nixon said
"Operation Pegasus is set to go off, I thought I might give you the heads up" Moose said
"Pegasus yeah, great, everybody know their job" Winters said
"We drilled with the boats all day and Captain Hunt is coming along, and so is the Canadian engineers, Colonel Dobie knows his stuff" Moose said
"Guess she loves you" Katie said
"Yeah she did a little miffed, but we cleared things up" Heyliger said.
"Do you know how many times you have to cross the river" Winters asked
"If there really is hundred and forty men hiding over there, three trip" Moose said
"Speed is the key, what time is jump off" Winters said
"We will be at the far side of Rhine at 01.00" Moose said
"Speed is the key, keep moving and lead the way" Winters said
"Dick, Easy is in good hands" Nixon said
"Yeah, yeah right, well hang tough" Winters said
"I could say the same too you" Heyliger held his hand out for Winters to shake
"Good luck Moose" Winters said and shook Heyliger's hand
"Nix are we sure on the intelligence on this" Winters asked him
"I think it's pretty damn good"
"Is easy walking into another company of Germans no one can see" Winters asked Nix
"Why don't we ask Moose when he gets back" Nixon said and started to leave
"Yeah and if they do run in to any troubles will you let us know" Winters said
Lane got up and squeezed Winters arm, "They'll be ok"
Dani was in the middle of the celebration when Moose got up on a chair and started to yell something nobody understood but everybody answered him.
An officer stood up and said "Moose Heyliger and the American 101st has done the Red Devils a great service, making it possible for us to return and fight the enemy on another day, to Easy Company, Victory and Currahee"
CURRAHEE the men shouted, the party got pretty rowdy and Dani had a bit too much to drink, which didn't say a lot, she had never been drunk before, at least not this drunk.
Lane was talking to Bull and one of the British sergeants, when she noticed Dani getting a little too close to one the Brits.
"Bull, go get Talbert and tell him to get Dani to bed, now" Lane said
"Ma'am" Bull turned and immediately found Talbert
Bull motioned him over "What can I do for you sergeant, Captain" Talbert was a little confused, he wasn't close to Captain Easterday in any way
"Talbert, you need to get Hunt to bed, now, she had enough" Lane ordered the sergeant
"Yeah, she is having a rough time with the lieutenant being gone and all" Talbert walked over and picked up Dani and carried her to his room, he put her down on his bed, she opened her eyes for a short moment, "Why can't anybody love me, why do they always leave" she asked him and then passed out.
Talbert gently stroked her hair "I will always love you and I will never leave you" he whispered, he got undressed and climbed into bed and held Dani close all night.
Colonel Dobie came over to where Lane was sitting nursing her drink, Bull had left and Nix had some bet going on a arm wrestling contest going on "So how did a pretty girl like you end up in the airborne" He asked her
"I wanted to serve and the airborne seemed like the best," Lane said and tried to shrug Dobie's question off.
"How long have you been with Easy" Dobie asked
"Since the beginning, I was already a S2 lieutenant when the company got formed at Toccoa
"So exactly how many women are there attached to Easy" Dobie asked
"Well now there is me, then there is Katie, she a doctor, a surgeon she is like a freaking genius and she will marry Winters at some point, then there is Dani a nurse, she just left, she is with a Lieutenant who is recovering from a gunshot wound, Mia our sweet and sacrificing nurse, she been with us since MacKall.
"And you, what's going on between you and Nixon" Dobie asked
"We actually grew up together, and I have loved him most of my life, it only took this little war to get us together" Lane smiled, and at that moment Nix looked at her and a big smile spread across his face
"Well good for you, it's nice to see some happiness in the midst of this miserable war." Dobie toasted Lane
The 506th moved to Driel, Holland
It was an extremely active sector.
Winters called Heyliger and suggested the two of them make an inspection of the outposts.
Winters then called Welsh and told him they would be en route that night.
They were walking side by side down the narrow path, when suddenly they heard someone yell Halt.
Moose for the life of him couldn't remember the password, and without further notice the private, who was at the outpost, fired his M1, Moose was hit in the right shoulder and the left leg, his calf looked like it had just been blown away.
Winters screamed at the private, that he needed to get Lieutenant Welsh and fast, and to call an ambulance.
Welsh and Winters bandaged Moose up as well as they could and carried him to the waiting ambulance, when they got there, Mia and Doc. Roe was waiting for them
"How much morphine did you give" Roe asked
"Two maybe three syringes, I don't know" Welsh said
"Well I don't see a single syringe on this man jacket" Mia said
"You lucky he is a big man, he might just make it" Roe said
"We are sorry ok" Winters said
"We didn't know what to do he was in so much pain" Welsh said
"Well you are officers and grownups you ought to know" Mia said and slammed the ambulance door
"Dick we are heading out, we heading for Mourmelon" Nix was standing halfway up the stairs to the loft Katie and Winters shared in the house they had been billeted to, he had his holding bag packed and was ready to go.
Winters looked at Nixon "Yeah the office is packed and we are good to go".
The two officers walked out into the busy street, a jeep was waiting for them, it had Lane on its hood. She was waiting for Nixon to show up, when she noticed Nixon heading for the driver seat, she jumped off the hood and pushed him out of the way.
"You are not driving, I know you've been drinking and we are going to have a little talk about that" Lane jumped into the driver's seat and fired up the engine, Nixon and Welsh got in the back and Winters got in the passenger's seat.
Nixon and Welsh had both been drinking and were cracking jokes, Lane zoned out, she was looking forward to getting some rest. The men needed some time off and if, and that was a big if the Intel was correct, the 1001st wouldn't see combat until spring.
Mourmelon was an old garrison fort, old being the key word, but none of the officers complained, it had hot water, warm beds and good chow.

Tamaki followed you out of his room, keeping close to your side in case he stumbled. You were both alone in the hall, your footsteps echoing off the high stone walls. Tamaki marveled at the architecture, noting how intricately placed each stone brick was.
He'd been to various parts of the merpeople empire, witnessing incredible underwater palaces, but he was used to the simpler practice of living in caves or small houses formed from the muck on the seafloor. Tamaki loved seeing the attention to detail in each of your walls; windows perfectly spaced and letting the sunlight warmly spread across the floor. He couldn't help but wonder if all human homes looked like this, but a part of him figured they didn't.
His mind also began to question why you lived in a place like this, and had what you called a handmaiden like Brianne. Were you important in some way? Was it your father? You had mentioned him a few times. Maybe you happened to be from a very rich family. Tamaki felt a slight lump form in his throat. Of course, he had to fall for someone who seemed to be more and more out of his league with every new piece of information he found out about her.
Just what was a princess? Tamaki felt like he might have heard the term before, maybe in some kind of legend or story, but he couldn't remember where. The not-knowing nagged at the back of his brain, but he was determined not to ask in case he insulted you.
You led him through a big room with a large table, guiding him towards a door in the wall, which was nearly hidden against the cool tones of stone. The door swung open, and Tamaki found himself looking down at a flight of steps leading down into a warmly lit room.
You showed him the rail, letting him cling to it as you assisted in making your way down the small number of steps. Miraculously, Tamaki survived, and he felt very proud of himself for not tumbling down the stone stairs on his first try at them.
You confidently strode around a bend and excitedly led him towards a burly man who was washing dishes in the sink with his back turned to the two of you.
"Gabriel!" you called out. "There's someone I'd like you to meet!"
The man turned. He looked to be about in his forties and sported a brunet mustache, his eyes twinkling when he caught sight of Tamaki.
You pulled him closer to the new man, beaming excitedly. "Tamaki, this is Gabriel, our cook. He's very very sweet. I'm sure you'll also be interested to hear that he was the one who rescued you off the beach."
"Please tell me you didn't go there on purpose? The water there is dangerous." Gabriel's voice was gruff yet somehow smooth, words reverberating in his chest. Tamaki allowed the sound to resonate in his mind for a minute, savoring how it sounded so different from the women he'd heard before. It vaguely reminded him of the lower pitches of whale song he'd hear when the large mammals would migrate north in the spring and summer; when the waters would warm and the currents would slow.
He barely had time to nod before you jumped in at his silence. "He's a castaway. Apparently his boat went down out at sea and he happened to wash onto our shores." You turned and grinned at him. "You're not a complete idiot after all."
"I knew I didn't recognize him," Gabriel said, looking into Tamaki's face and making him go back to being generally uncomfortable. "It's rare for me not to know a fellow islander. I see pretty much everyone when I go off to market. Feeling better, son?"
He placed the back of his large hand over Tamaki's forehead, making him elicit a small squeak as he shied away. His touch was warm and gentle, but such factors were canceled at the fact Tamaki had never met him before.
"Jumpy thing, aren't ya?" Gabriel straightened, apology quickly flashing in his eyes. "Still shook up? You were in pretty rough condition. Must have taken a blow to the head on one of those rocks. But you weren't too bloodied up, thankfully. I've seen so much worse come of those that venture into the cold, dark sea . . . ." His voice trailed off, gazing at nothing as it looked as though his mind traveled to places unseen or heard.
You placed a hand on his solid arm, catching his eyes with yours as you gently pulled him out of his daze. "Hey," you softly crooned.
"Sorry, Princess. Got . . . distracted." He abruptly straightened and shook his head. "I'm glad we found you as soon as we did. Any longer and you woulda frozen to death. You really have (Y/N) to thank, here, for finding you."
You bashfully lowered your gaze and shrugged, toeing the stone floor. "Without you, I would never have been able to get him all the way back here."
"A team effort, then." Gabriel slid back into a grin and winked at Tamaki. "You best get plenty of rest. Did you enjoy the stew?"
Tamaki nodded. "Thank you," he said, trying to keep his voice above a mumble. "It was really good."
Gabriel squinted at him, suddenly confused. "What?"
Tamaki frowned and looked back up at him, opening his mouth to repeat himself before remembering the necklace that still hung around his neck under his shirt.
You'll be able to speak to the first human that touches you, so make sure it's her.
This must be what Nejire meant. Gabriel couldn't understand him. Tamaki briefly wondered what the man had heard come from his mouth, hoping it wasn't too embarrassing before you jumped in again.
"You ate it so fast!" you giggled. "Which reminds me. Gabe, could you get him another cup of water? I think he's still thirsty."
"Of course." Your friend pulled another metal cup from the sink behind him, giving it an extra rinse in the water of the basin before filling it with clean water from a pump. He handed it to Tamaki who gratefully took it and began to take small sips from the mug, enjoying the newfound taste of fresh water. "So where are you from?"
Tamaki faltered mid-sip, mind starting to spin. Should he lie? He didn't know what to say. How should he keep his secret? Gabriel couldn't understand a word he said but you could. Even if he told the truth, the name of his empire would be very difficult to translate. He was sure even you would have a hard time figuring out what he meant.
Tamaki just tried for a mildly distressed hum and shrugged his shoulders, going back to swallowing some water.
You and Gabriel shared a glance that went unnoticed by Tamaki's eyes, hidden from view behind the rim of his cup. "Were you . . . a pirate?" you spoke up, trying to work out his history.
Pirates . . . . The term was vaguely familiar to him. Maybe he'd seen it in one of the children's' story scrolls at the library. He hesitantly shook his head, trying to stay hidden behind his drink.
"Just a sailor that lived out at sea?" Gabriel asked, his voice suspicious yet equally hesitant.
Tamaki decided this would be the best one to roll with, finally peeking out and nodding his head.
"Sure are quiet . . . ." the man softly muttered, lightly stroking his chin as he studied Tamaki's face. "Are you mute or something?"
Mute?
"He was talking just fine before," you said, resting a gentle hand on Tamaki's shoulder. "Do you need to go lie down again? It's been a long day."
Tamaki shook his head. He wanted to spend time with you. Just maybe you alone, without other people who might hear whatever nonsense came out of his enchanted mouth.
"He staying here?" Gabriel asked, relaxing his stance only fractionally.
"Yeah, in one of the guest chambers. We're waiting for the ships to the mainland to come back."
"That'll be some time," the man mused. "Oh well. If you ever need anything, you can always ask." This was directed at Tamaki. "And if you ever try anything funnyā€”" a steely glint arose in Gabriel's eyes, making the boy gulp, "ā€”you'll have to deal with me."
You smirked and caught Tamaki's gaze, mockingly giving him a sharp nod. Everyone in the room could agree that Gabriel was not a man to be messed with.
"Thank you, Gabe," you said, nudging Tamaki so he would know it was time to start moving again.
"No problem, Princess." Gabriel turned and went back to his work. He lifted something out of the basin that caught Tamaki's eye. It was a sponge. What was he doing with one of those?
Tamaki glanced at you, but before he could even think to try to subtly whisper something in your ear so Gabriel couldn't hear him, you pulled him back to the stairs. After a short moment of collecting his legs, Tamaki soon found that climbing stairs was much easier than going down them. He couldn't help but feel proud of himself for reaching the top of the landing.
"Yay!" you congratulated him when you were both standing together at the top. "You're really getting the hang of things!"
Tamaki blushed and smiled at the floor, nearly melting in the glow of your smile. How were you always so vibrant? You tapped him on the shoulder, making him look up to see that you had raised up a hand, level with your shoulder.
"High five?" you asked, giving your palm a little shake.
Tamaki hesitantly lifted his hand to press against yours, confused.
You giggled. "Do you not high five out at sea?"
"No," Tamaki answered truthfully. "What is it?"
You demonstrated on yourself, clapping one of your hands to the awaiting other. "Like that, except this hand is supposed to be yours."
You held out your hand again in the same manner, and Tamaki gently slapped his against yours.
"See, you learned something new today!" you beamed.
Actually, Tamaki thought, I've learned so many things today. I can barely keep up.
"Come on." You started walking and Tamaki hurried to keep up. "There are still some people I want you to meet."
The two of you didn't speak for a few moments, traveling together in companionable silence.
Finally, you broke it, making Tamaki look up at your pensive face. "Why didn't you want to talk with Gabe?" you asked, steps echoing off the walls of the cool hallway.
"I, umā€”" Tamaki tried to think of a good answer. He finally alighted on a half-truth. What could be better? "I get . . . really nervous around people and it's like I can't function," he admitted, keeping his eyes cast down. "It's mostly just around strangers I don't know very well."
"You're not like that around me," you said. "You talk just fine."
"Yeah, but you're just soā€”" Tamaki stopped himself before he could say any more. He didn't want to go too fast. He wanted your affections to be as much your choice as his were for you.
"I'm so what?"
"Uh, nice, I guess."
"Gabriel is really nice." Your voice remained soft and nonaccusatory. "He may look a little intimidating, but once you get to know him, he's a real sweetie."
Tamaki silently reeled at the idea he might have accidentally insulted your friend. "I didn't mean he wasn't! It's just that . . . I feel different when I'm around you." He dared look into your face.
Your expression was slightly flustered, yet you had undeniably been flattered by his words. Who was this boy? You had to wonder. Why was he so . . . strange?
The two of you remained quiet on your way through the halls. You had Tamaki meet a few more people who worked at your father's chateau before leading him outside. You gleefully threw off your flats, letting your toes sink into the plush grass beneath them.
Still barefoot, Tamaki followed after you, discovering the new sensation of sun-warmed grass tickling his ankles. He watched as you twirled around in the light, skirts flowing around your skilled, graceful legs. Someday, Tamaki promised himself, he would be able to have that much control over his new limbs. He imagined himself joining you, bouncing around almost as weightlessly as if you were underwater.
You came back and pulled him over to a small patch of flowers. Tamaki had never seen anything like them, and he hesitantly reached out a hand to brush the tips of his fingers over their soft petals.
A small creature burst into flight near his hands, making Tamaki jump back. It didn't look like a bird, and yet, its wings carried its tiny body effortlessly through the air. It was a light yellow, starkly showing up against the green grass behind it. It alighted on Tamaki's arm, making him freeze in apprehension, watching as little antennae brushed against the cloth of his sleeve.
"What is it?" Tamaki scarcely dared to breathe.
You laughed aloud behind him, carefully settling down beside him so as not to frighten it away. "That's a butterfly."
"Woah."
The two of you observed it wander over his appendage until a light breeze prompted it to flutter off.
You noticed Tamaki's face as he watched the insect leave. His eyes practically had stars in them as he looked after it, and you couldn't help but appreciate for the first time just how blue they were. At first, you had thought they were just kind of black, but now, in the setting sun, you could make out each sapphire hue. They reminded you of the ocean, and intrigued you just as much.
He really was handsome. You admired the way his blue-black hair fell between his eyes, following it with your own eyes to the little tufts that spiked up in the back. His ears poked out of the falling locks, and you noticed with curiosity that they were somewhat pointed. The urge to reach up and touch them struck you, but you fought it, stilling your hand so it remained in the grass. You went back to his eyes, and they met yours, heat suddenly growing on both your cheeks.
"So, uh," you began, finally reaching up your hand to place on the back of your neck. "Were you born on the sea or something?"
"Why do you ask?"
You smiled sheepishly, dropping your gaze to the dirt. "I guess you're just so . . . intrigued with all this. It's like you look at the world with so much wonder as though you've never seen anything like it before."
"I haven't."
You looked back up to him. "You've never been on land?"
Tamaki blew out his cheeks, trying to decide yet again how to answer. "Not really."
Your eyes widened. "Howā€”?"
Tamaki abruptly stood. "I-I can't tell you. I want to, but now isn't a good time." His eyes contained fear and maybe regret, wincing as your face fell into confusion.
"Are you in trouble or something?" you asked. "If there's someone bothering you, I am capable of placing you under my protectionā€”"
"I-it's not like that." Tamaki hated the way his voice shook. He wanted to tell you who he was, what he was, but now just wasn't the time.
When?
"I promise," he said, shakily offering his hand to you. "I will tell you."
You looked at his hand dubiously. "I have my safety to worry for as well," you told him, glancing from his expecting fingers and back to his eyes. "Tamaki, I know I've just met you, but I want to be able to call you my friend."
His heart melted at your words. Friendship was a start. Could you like him as a friend already? "You have my honor," he said, and you finally placed your hand in his. "I will never do anything to hurt you."
You nodded, now standing. "When can you tell me?" you asked, dropping his hand. "I want to know more about you."
He chewed his lip, already missing the moment of contact you had briefly shared. "You consider me your friend?" he asked, hesitantly.
"I would like to."
"Tomorrow then. I would really like to get to know you too."
"May I ask what the purpose is of keeping this secret?"
Tamaki winced. "I don't want you to think differently of me."
You gently placed your hand on his shoulder. "I won't judge you. I'm not like that. As long as you're a genuinely good person, I don't care where you grew up."
Tamaki almost spilled his guts out to you right then and there, but a voice interrupted him in his tracks.
"Princess! There you are!" Brianne stepped out of the doorway. "You should do some studying before dinner. You know your father wants you to keep up with that."
You smiled, giving a light eye roll. "Coming."
"Hurry up," she called over her shoulder as she turned to go back inside. "You've already missed quite some time running around with this boy all afternoon."
Tamaki blushed, embarrassed at her reference to him.
"Wanna come with me?" you asked Tamaki. "You can keep me company."
"Sure."
"Can you read?"
"Yes."
...
It turned out, Tamaki couldn't read.
At least, not whatever script you showed him. He was used to a different, swirling type of print the merpeople used to write.
The two of you had settled in your study, and you had handed him a small stack of books for him to skim through while you did some work of your own, an ink pen in hand, occasionally jotting something down onto a sheet of parchment.
Tamaki thumbed through the bound pages, amazed at what was possible in the dry air. He tried to make sense of some of the words before him, but he remained clueless.
He found some drawings featured in one of the books, this one appeared to be on the creature from earlier you had called a butterfly. He delicately traced his hand over the ink, studying the anatomy of the insect's wings and small body pictured before him. Every few pages there was another drawing, and he would look it over. He hadn't even thought to wonder about how many different species there were. It struck him that you and he were like that; different species, but so tantalizingly similar all the same.
Finally Brianne called you down for dinner and the two of you ate alone together at the big table. You made conversation on what you had been studying, talking a bit about human history. Tamaki was deeply intrigued, hanging on every word and occasionally interrupting you with a question.
When you were both done, you walked him back toward his room. "Would you like a bath?" you asked him. "I can ask Brianne to draw you one. It might feel nice."
"Uh . . . sure, if it's not too much trouble." Tamaki had no idea what it was that you were talking about, but he was curious all the same.
"Not at all." You beamed up at him.
If a week ago someone had told Tamaki that he would be on the receiving end of so many of your beautiful smiles in one day, he'd have thought they'd spent too much time in the sun. You were so beautiful to him, and he wanted nothing more than to stay by your side forever.
Forever . . . that was a long time. And he now only had twenty-nine days left. He hoped he could come up with something soon. Maybe Mirio would help him again. You would wait for him, right? After you found out he wasn't a human?
You let him in his room and ducked out again to go find your handmaiden. Tamaki stood alone in his room, glancing toward the dark window. In the dim candlelight of the chamber, he saw something in the glass. He took a few steps closer and saw . . . himself.
He had seen his reflection before. One of his fellow townspeople had found a human mirror in a sunken shipwreck. Everyone had gathered around, curiously peering into the reflective glass. The window before him didn't work so well, but he was still able to make out just how much he'd changed.
His cheeks looked rosier and less pale than they had once been. His pupils were smaller, eyes not as big. His nose protruded from his face more, but not in an obnoxious way. Gills no longer lined his neck, and the small frills behind his ears were missing, although he had figured out both of these facts much before seeing it for himself. His teeth were flat like yours and his lips had filled out slightly, no longer just barely visible outside his mouth. He looked perfectly human, although he noticed his ears were still pointy, but they had always been that way. Even among the merpeople, they had been a little odd.
He heard his door click and swing open, making him turn around and see Brianne standing in the doorway.
"Come along, now," she said. "It was Tamaki, right?"
He nodded, following her into the hall. She led him into a room that held a large white basin, filled nearly to the brim with steaming water.
"Do you want me to take your clothes?" Brianne asked from behind him.
Tamaki thought for a moment, trying to decide how to respond. He cringed, remembering that if he tried to speak, she wouldn't understand him. He finally nodded, looking down to his shirt. Now to get it off . . . .
His fingers fumbled with the buttons, only made more shaky with Brianne standing there, watching him. A small part of him wished that it could be you instead. Not for any impure reason. He simply felt more comfortable around you. Adding to the fact he couldn't answer her or even begin to explain why, he couldn't help but feel horribly awkward around your friend.
He finally worked out three buttons and attempted to slide it off over his head. Now holding it, he handed it off to Brianne, who took it and draped it over her arm. Tamaki then started with the tie around his waist, finding it much easier to undo and tugging his pants down around his ankles.
Averting her eyes, Brianne took them from him as well and swiftly whisked out of the room, shutting the door tight behind her. Tamaki stepped over the rim, letting his toe dip into the water. He found it comfortably warm and fully submerged his foot, repeating the action with the other leg. He slid down, the warm water unfamiliarly soothing his muscles.
It was a strange sensation to be wet again. The idea of taking off the necklace and letting his tail come back floated hazily into his mind, but he decided against it. He vividly remembered the excruciating pain of transforming between species and decided that taking it off would only happen when absolutely necessary. Besides, what if Brianne walked in and saw? That would be a horrible way to be outed.
Now came the question of what he was supposed to do.
Tamaki shifted down, letting his head sink underwater. He briefly wondered how long he could hold his breath, now that he only had a slightly larger pair of lungs. The temperature made his eyes sting so he shut them tight, letting a dark silence press around him.
He already missed you. He wanted to keep talking to you. Your conversation at dinner had been so enrapturing to him, his mind couldn't help but go back to what you had said. It amazed him that two species could live on the same planet together for so long and yet have such contrasting, separate histories from each other.
He came back up, wiping some of the water from his eyes and glancing around. He noticed that on the rim of the tub sat a sponge. The second one he'd seen today.
He picked it up, finding it squishier than he'd expected. What were you doing with so many of them?
Hundreds of years ago, merpeople had seen male dolphins exchange sponges with female dolphins as a mating gift. It had become tradition to do the same; a male merman presenting a sea sponge to a mermaid he was interested in.
Tamaki blushed, thinking of you. How would you react to him giving it to you? Would it mean anything if you already knew of having it in this room?
How different could she be from the mermaids back home? Mirio's voice sounded in his mind.
From what he'd seen today, very, but maybe this could be something you had in common with him.
He toyed with it, squeezing it between his fingers. Maybe you would appreciate the gesture. He set it back on the rim of the tub, sinking back down into the water.
He let his mind wander, briefly stressing over things he would have to do in the future. The most pressing one was telling you about what he was. Tamaki spent the next several minutes rehearsing in his brain, trying to picture your reactions to various confessions he came up with. He scarcely noticed the water cooling around him as time passed.
Eventually, Brianne opened the door, preceded by a rapid knock before swinging it open. She laid out a different shirt, a pair of pants, and another rectangular strip of cloth before leaving again. Tamaki stood, trying to shake off as much water as he could, planting his feet on the cool stone below. With his skin still glistening with water, it was difficult for Tamaki to pull on his clothes, but he eventually managed. Pacing back over to the tub, Tamaki swiped the sponge that balanced delicately on the rim. He shoved it into his pants pocket and stepped out into the hallway where a waiting Brianne stood silently by the door. She gave his still-dripping hair an odd look but, all the same, led him back to his room.
He flopped into his bed, tiredness finally beginning to settle within his bones. In the dying light of a candle, Tamaki drifted off to sleep, hoping against all things that he would still be here by tomorrow night.
...

My Hourglass Is In Your Hands
Summary: A day of fishing in the lagoon with Luke is cancelled when his and Ashton's skiff springs a leak. What will they do with their surprise day off?
Genre: Steampunk
Relationships: Lashton
Word count: 1881
Warnings: blood and injury
Leave Kudos?
Ashton leaned out the window to reach the small pail hanging from the awning, gritting his cigarette holder tight between his teeth to leave both hands free so that he could pour the water collected last night into his window box. The little white flowers were just opening up in the morning sunlight, like snowflakes peppering the green shrubs.
Leaning on the windowsill, he took a puff of his cigarette and gazed out at the city clinging to the cliffs around the lagoon. Generally, all was quiet since most people were still in bed, but as he listened to the approaching whir of propellers, a dinghy descended in front of him. He gave the pilot a wave, watching them sink towards the Great Eye, where other airboats buzzed to and from its surface like dragonflies. Early morning was always a busy time down there.
The timer on Ashtonā€™s oven dinged and he put out the stub of his cigarette before heading back in. The blueberry muffins were golden on top and when he cut one open, a puff of steam rising into the cool morning air, he found that it was soft and springy inside.
The rhythmic squeak of the pulley outside the window alerted him to the bucket coming down from Lukeā€™s house. He hurried out to grab the rope and help pull it down to his sill. The bucket felt heavier than usual and when he opened the lid he found a jar of jam with the note.
skiff sprung a leak. wont make it to the eye today, was the message Luke had sent, with a sad face and the morning weather report written out underneath. The jam had a tag labelled strawberry with a smiley face underneath tied beneath the lid.
Ashton watched another airboat rise past the window, contemplating his suddenly empty schedule. He had plenty of weed and knew a good spot for watching the clouds and losing track of time. He took down the notebook and pencil hanging next to the window.
rolling cigarettes, meet me at the market in an hour? he wrote. Ā
He wrapped a muffin for Luke in cloth and sent it up with the note, smiling when he felt Luke start pulling the rope with him. Ā
He went back to the stove, nibbling on his muffin as he wrapped the other two. They wouldnā€™t be seeing Michael and Calum today, but the snacks would be welcome after a few shared cigarettes. He made the usual sandwiches for him and Luke, then got the weed jar down and started rolling cigarettes, wondering if it would be worth restocking the jar while he was out. Ā
Lukeā€™s reply to his suggestion was an ok with another smiley face. Ā
Once his lunchbox was packed, Ashton deliberated in the bathroom mirror. Heā€™d better change into something more presentable than his fishing jumpsuit and singlet. A waistcoat and button-up, to start with. Was his nice jacket too nice for a day out in the cliffs with a friend? Even if that friend was Luke? Ā
He settled on his trenchcoat, to play it safe. He wouldnā€™t mind it getting covered in ash, he reasoned, and he wouldnā€™t feel overdressed if they dropped into a pub at some point. It looked good with his semi-nice trousers and boots anyway. Ā
As Ashton gave himself a final once-over, he heard a roll of thunder outside and frowned. Lukeā€™s weather report hadnā€™t predicted anything but sun all day. He turned and spotted the underside of a massive airship outside the window in time to feel the room shudder so violently he had to grip a bedpost to stay standing. Outside, tiny pieces of debris rained down and his and Lukeā€™s bucket fell past, followed by the wooden beam Lukeā€™s end of the pulley was attached to and a huge hunk of burned metal. Ashtonā€™s end ripped out with a splintering snap and above him someone screamed. Ā
Ashton stared at the ceiling. Luke. Ā
Abandoning the lunchbox, Ashton ran to the door, hands shaking as he pulled the handle and wrenched it open. A few neighbours were out in the hallway, but he ignored their questioning looks as he raced to the ladder at the end, climbing the rungs two at a time to reach Lukeā€™s floor. Ā
Ashton didnā€™t think about how heā€™d get in until he reached the door, feeling both relieved that it was ajar and anxious that Luke wasnā€™t out in the hallway. He pushed it open and froze. Ā
The lagoon-facing wall was gone aside from what had been blown into the room, the view of the sinking airship outside and the smoking hole in its hull only slightly obscured by metal beams twisting downwards from the roof. The room itself was a wreck of plaster, shattered glass and splintered floorboards bashed in by burned metal chunks. Ā  Ā
Shaken out of his trance by a cry, Ashton searched the room for the source to find Luke on the floor next to his radio, a warped piece of thin pipe running through his thigh and blood streaming through his hair. Ashton rushed to his side, eyes fixing first on the side of his head. The tip of his ear was hanging by a sliver of skin, a long but thankfully shallow wound marking where a piece of metal had nearly taken out his eye as well.
Ashton took out his handkerchief and pressed it to the head wound. Ā
ā€œAsh,ā€ Luke gasped. Ā
ā€œIā€™m here,ā€ Ashton assured him, glancing around the room again. Outside, a sheet of corrugated roofing fell past. ā€œWe gotta go. Hold the handkerchief there.ā€ They werenā€™t in immediate danger, but he didnā€™t want to take risks with whatever damage the structures above them had taken. Ā
He went to Lukeā€™s bathroom, half of the bath itself probably at the bottom of the Eye by now and a piece of sky now visible above the airship, and searched the cupboard for medical supplies. There was gauze and a length of bandage, but nothing like the emergency kit they kept on the skiff. He grabbed the bandage and hurried back out to Luke. Ā
ā€œKeep holding that,ā€ he reminded him, pressing the now soaked handkerchief back to the wound, ā€œCan you lift your leg? I need to bandage it.ā€ Ā
Luke groaned, his foot shifting a little. Ashton helped him pull his knee up just enough to reach underneath. He could feel the tip of the pipe through his blood-wettened trousers, twisted and sharp. Ā
ā€œI gotta cut your trousers open. Knife?ā€
ā€œKnife?ā€ Luke questioned breathlessly.
ā€œWhere are your knives?ā€
ā€œOh.ā€ Luke took a shuddering breath and pointed to his bed. ā€œToolbelt.ā€
Ashton spotted the toolbelt hanging from a bedpost and grabbed it, first finding Lukeā€™s large fishing knife, then a multitool with a relatively sturdy pair of scissors. He picked the multitool, not wanting to risk further injury to Lukeā€™s leg with his shaky hands. After cutting a wide hole around the end of the pipe, Ashton carefully set loops of bandage around both ends and started winding it around his leg.
ā€œI was about to go,ā€ Luke told him, voice straining, ā€œI was about to turn off the radio when I heard their distress call. The window shattered.ā€
ā€œThey arenā€™t falling too fast,ā€ Ashton noted with a glance at the top of the airship outside, ā€œMustā€™ve just been a couple of cells.ā€
Now that Luke had drawn his attention to it, Ashton could hear the announcer on the radio requesting aid for the airship and the areas hit by debris. He tuned it out again to focus on Luke.
ā€œSit up for me?ā€
Luke clutched Ashtonā€™s arm tightly as he helped him up, groaning.
ā€œCan you walk?ā€
Breathing deeply, Luke nodded. He tensed as Ashton secured his grip on him, breaths coming out shorter and faster as if to ready himself. Ashton lifted him slowly, but Luke still cried out as his leg shifted.
ā€œI donā€™t think I can move it,ā€ he whimpered.
ā€œThatā€™s okay, just lean on me.ā€ Ashton took a small step to the door, Luke lurching with him. ā€œThatā€™s it, come on.ā€
The hardest part was getting over the doorstep. Ashton went first and Luke dragged his foot over it sideways, going pale as he bit his lip hard. Lukeā€™s neighbours seemed to have fared better, though Ashton supposed that any injured worse than Luke would likely still be trapped in their homes.
ā€œMedic?ā€ Ashton asked someone hurrying between the people in the hallway, a red medical kit in hand.
They looked at the pipe. ā€œShit. Uhā€¦ Take him to the atrium, someoneā€™ll be there soon, I gotta...ā€
Ashton nodded understandingly.
Lukeā€™s floor opened onto a balcony stretching along the cliff wall, the bottom of the atrium a couple of floors below them. The whole area was shielded from the weather by a wall with a large, domed window, now cracked by a piece of wreckage, though that didnā€™t stop onlookers from staring at the airship outside.
Ashton laid Luke down on a nearby bench, feet on the floor and the pipe clear of the edge to keep it from getting jostled, and went to the railing, searching for a medic in the crowd below them but finding his gaze drawn to the airship. A few tugboats had attached lines to it, slowing its descent. The airship clearly wasnā€™t designed for water landings and Ashton wondered how many tugboats it would take to lift it over the cliffs to safety. Maybe theyā€™d just rescue the people aboard and let the deep blue of the Eye take it.
ā€œAsh.ā€
Ashton hurried back to Lukeā€™s side, pressing the handkerchief to his head. ā€œWhatā€™s wrong?ā€
Luke gripped his hand. ā€œDonā€™t go.ā€
ā€œIā€™m not going anywhere. Iā€™m right here.ā€
Luke nodded weakly, sweat dripping down the sides of his face. ā€œStay.ā€
There probably wasnā€™t much point to running in circles and screaming anyway. Ashton settled on the floor next to Luke, gently rubbing the back of his hand with his thumb as he kept pressure on the head wound with his other hand.
From here, Ashton couldnā€™t see the Eye, but he saw a fire boat whizz past, firefighters manning the water cannons on the side.
ā€œAre you hurt?ā€ Luke asked weakly.
Ashton looked at him and shook his head. ā€œMy house didnā€™t get hit.ā€
At least, not while Ashton had been there. He considered the debris heā€™d seen falling outside Lukeā€™s and wondered what state his own home would be in when he returned.
Ashton frowned. When would he return? Emergency services might block off the hallways to the areas that had been hit with debris while they got the situation under control, which could take all night. The areas below would probably be blocked off while debris was cleared away and that could take days. The hit buildings would have to be repaired. In Lukeā€™s case, probably completely rebuilt. Ashton hoped theyā€™d give him a chance to grab his personal belongings first.
ā€œWe might have to stay with Cal and Mike,ā€ Ashton suggested to Luke.
ā€œSleepover,ā€ Luke mumbled in reply.
Ashton chuckled. ā€œYeah. A sleepover.ā€
ā€œWe can all sleep in the bed together.ā€
ā€œAll of us?ā€ Ashton laughed, ā€œMight be a bit of a squeeze.ā€
ā€œCozy.ā€
ā€œCozy,ā€ Ashton repeated, giving Lukeā€™s hand a squeeze.

Talking Tickets--22 May 2020! Bundesliga! Revenue! Rocking At The Drive-In! More!
Hey!Ā
Thanks for being here again this week. If you are enjoying this newsletter, tell your friends and colleagues to sign up by visitingĀ this link.
Heading into the long weekend in the States, if that really even matters right nowā€¦hereā€™s a video that came my way of The NationalĀ performing a setĀ around the time of their album, High Violet, which is excellent. Iā€™m guessing that they wonā€™t be playing their show at Wolf Trap, but if something changesā€¦Iā€™m there.
I had a chance to participate during Eric Fullerā€™s Rescue Meet on Tuesday along with Anthony Esposito and a few others from different areas of the industry. You can watchĀ the replay here.
Donā€™t forgetĀ Happy Hour with me and Ken TroupeĀ this afternoon. Ken has fixed the technology and we can definitely have more than 6 people or whatever crazy number kept getting folks bounced that one week.
To the tickets!
ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”-
1. Events Are Starting To Come Back With Drive-Ins and Social Distancing:Ā
In the span of a few moments, we went from having the first social distance concert to having it postponed, to having it back on again.Ā Then we had a drive-in show with 600 cars!
While all of this is positive, theĀ cluster developing at Bryant Denny Stadium in TuscaloosaĀ shows that we still have to be cautious with our expectations and with the speed of being able to bring events back online and things back to normal.
Casinos in Las Vegas and MississippiĀ are going to be coming back soon. These arenā€™t live events, but I do think they will provide us an opportunity to learn about what safe openings and safe gatherings will look like or can look like.
The same can be said for theĀ opening of museums, parks, and other places where folks gather to see art, hangout, and commune. Though I do wonder howĀ marathons and big racesĀ are going to manage to come back in the near termā€¦if youā€™ve never run the NYC marathon or seen it, social distancing is tough.
Th0ugh if youā€™ve never run the NYC marathon, put that on your bucket list.
All of this highlights the need to continue to watch what other countries are doing, try to learn best practices and to be cautious but creative like theseĀ mixed events in Norway.Ā
2. We will come back, but what will that look like?Ā
If the coronavirus has taught us anything in the States is that if you donā€™t have a lobbyist, you donā€™t have much of a chance of anything.
So far, live entertainment has been hurt about as much as any industry and we donā€™t have anything to show for it. Regular folks, are in the same boat for the most part. Maybe we should all go into banking or lobbyingā€¦
I did do some nerd reading this week and found anĀ interesting piece about neoliberal economic policyĀ and the coronavirus that put a few ideas into my head that I think we can all learn from in this crisis:
* The ideas lying around are important. * What is feasible and likely can change pretty quickly. * Ultimately, ideas change the world.
For all of us, this means a few important thingsā€¦
* First, push our ideas of helping live entertainment recover. Countries around the world have varying plans for doing just that. In America, we definitely need to continue to push that agenda. My neighbor is a lobbyist and heā€™s explained the dark arts to me and Iā€™ve worked on a presidential campaign, so I understand how ridiculous the whole process can seem and feel from the outsideā€¦and it is, just the people in the middle of it canā€™t let their own self-importance get in the way of recognizing how ridiculous it is.
* No idea is a crazy idea. You need crazy ideas to come up with workable solutionsā€¦look at the stuff above with drive-ins and social distance concerts.
* Show up and do the work. Iā€™ve been talking about change, innovation, and evolution for my entire careerā€¦this stuff doesnā€™t come easy and it doesnā€™t come fast, but to give up now in the face of the need for innovation is just crazy. The industry needs everyone to be smarter, more thoughtful, and more creative.
Iā€™ll coverĀ economic models and ideasĀ in point 5.
3. Football, Futbol, Soccer Saves Us?!Ā
Have you picked your Bundesliga team yet?
Iā€™m still sticking with Bayern Munich because of their connection to Oktoberfest and beer!
Did yā€™all get a chance to catch any of the action from Germany over the weekend? I liked Haalandā€™s socially distanced goal celebration, but I have to say it was still weirdĀ watching football without fans.
On top of the Bundesliga, we also are going to see theĀ return of the Liga FPDĀ as well. (Thatā€™s the Costa Rican soccer league.) (ESPN will be showing their games.) (My team is Limon FCā€¦Iā€™ll explain over drinks sometime.)
The French league has already declared Paris Saint-Germain winners, but most of the other leagues around the world are attempting to finish their seasons with the Champions LeagueĀ looking to finish by August.
In the Premier League, we are seeingĀ a lot of caution.
But it will be great to see the EPL return since all of Spurs injured players are backā€¦but we allĀ long for the return of home-field advantage.Ā
In South Korea, there was a little story that likely gives folks a bit to think about with ā€œuniqueā€ partnerships!?
And, if theĀ Grand Final can have fans, Iā€™m hoping that I can be there.
A couple things here:
* Iā€™m glad to have sports back to watch. * Keep paying attention to what is working and what isnā€™t. * Constantly ask yourself what you are learning from all of these experiences and these events so that you come out of this stronger than before.
4. Arts Have Always Come Back, Yeah!Ā
Iā€™ve been saying it for months now, people will come backĀ eventually. To think otherwise is to laugh in the face of thousands of years of recorded history.
The challenge in the short term is what will this coming back look like, how quickly will folks feel comfortable, how many financial challenges will we be dealing with, and whether or not we get theĀ marketing challenge correct.
This virus and the financial conditions created by the shutdown of economies around the world haveĀ created the most challenging environment for the arts and entertainmentĀ in any of our lifetimes, true fact. But the virus and the financial crisis has also highlighted a lot ofĀ bad business practices, poor business models, and the need for more innovative thinking any many places.
The challenges that everyone are dealing with arenā€™t unique to one area of the industry. I mean, movie theatres, musuems, and bars are feeling the pinch as well. Everyone is in the entertainment and hospitality industry.
In speaking at Eric Fullerā€™s Rescue Meet event this week, I come back to a couple of ideas that seem to sum up where my thinking is this week:
* Creativity and innovation need to be at the front of everyoneā€™s thinking. * Cooperation is going to be key to being successful going forward. * There wonā€™t be a one-size-fits-all plan or approach to coming out of this. And, we have to recognize that earlier rather than later.
5. The Way To Generate Revenue Is Going To Need Some Attention:Ā
Iā€™m doing a webinar on Tuesday, 26 May with Frederic Aouad from Stay 22 on revenue and creating revenue opportunities now.
Two sessions:Ā 9 AM EDTĀ andĀ 2 PM EDT. We wanted to give folks a chance to join if they were in markets outside of the US or mainland Europe.
The genesis of the idea came out of someone grabbing my notes off the stand at INTIX in Dallas and how I had toĀ come up with a presentation on revenue on the fly.Ā
Revenue numbers have been in the news a lot the last few weeks as we saw Adam Silver talk about how about 40% of the NBAā€™s money comes from fans going to games. This week, we saw MLBā€™s owners share that playing games without fans will cost aboutĀ $640,000 in losses per game!
Iā€™d always thought the NFL had aĀ little less reliance on in-game revenue, but a report this week put the number at around 38%.
For minor league sports, the threat isĀ even more severe.
So we see that tons of money is still tied up in getting people to get into the games when they are played.
Which really begs a serious question: if getting fans into the stadium is so important, why has the sales and marketing models of the teams in the States been stagnant for so long?
The hard truth is that in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and many other markets, the creativity to capture more of their fan base has existed for a lot of time and we have to get on-board. I had David Fowler on my podcast before the lockdowns started, but he appeared onĀ Richard Clarkeā€™s podcastĀ this week and talked about his ideas in the context of the coronavirus and I think listening to these guys can be useful. Davidā€™s big three areĀ content,Ā creativity, and community.
This all comes up in light of the need to rethink where the money comes in from, this weekĀ Kirk Wakefield wrote up a pieceĀ about how little folks actually notice sponsors during games. Which was paired with the idea that MLB teams might cover seats withĀ sponsored tarpsĀ to help recapture some revenue from not having fans in the ballpark.
And, donā€™t even get me started onĀ ā€œimpressionsā€, ā€œlikesā€, and that sort of thing that is basically meaningless but easy to measure.Ā Even though there have been lawsuits about the accuracy of a lot of these social web measurements.
Revenue going forward is going to need a lot of thought, but Iā€™ll offer up three things to consider now:
* The way tickets are marketed and sold needs some serious attention. The folks that have invested in their fans over the years are the exceptions that prove the rule. We all need to rethink marketing and selling practicesā€¦which should have been a priority before but when you could just easily raise prices, sell to brokers and consolidators, and fall back on ā€œtickets distributedā€ as the way you reported attendanceā€¦YOLO!
* Investigating where folks are doing things better or where we can learn is going to create a lot of opportunities. What can we all learn from a professional services brand? What can we learn from the school bake sale? A nonprofit? There are millions, or more, examples to learn from.
* I said this in a very pointed way that was likely a bit ruder than I wanted to say it at INTIX in Dallas, but none of us are limited in the way that we make money and generate revenueā€¦we are limited by our creativity and thatā€™s the biggest challenge we are dealing with, limiting our creativity to predetermined ideas and solutions. And, I get it, there are real challenges facing everyone right now, but that should cause everyone to be a lot more creative.
As MJ said, ā€œBREAK!ā€
ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”-
What am I up to this week?
Check out my webinar with Frederic and the folks fromĀ We Will Recover. Iā€™m working on getting two or three exclusive blog posts and articles up on the We Will Recover site from some of the smarties I know from around the world including a really great piece from my friend, Georgia, down in Sydney.
TheĀ podcast is sitting there with over 100 episodes. Iā€™ve been trying to think about what form, if any, it takes going forward and Iā€™ve come up with an idea now that I think will work for me and offer value to all of yā€™all. Iā€™m going to focus on the future and Iā€™m going to bring in more folks from my work on strategy and marketing that donā€™t always touch the world of entertainment as a way to introduce more ideas and a different viewpoint.

TEMPLE RUN in Bangkok for less than 15 USD? Yes? Yes!
Have you made plans about your trip to Bangkok? Well, if youā€™re more on adventure about visiting temples in Bangkok (for a day), and nope, this is not the kind of temple run that you played games in your smart phones, or your heart (kidding aside) than the typical, or perhaps, the usual, touristy kind of adventure, may this blog post help you go through to your temple visits in the city of angels.Ā
Grateful as I am, I have lived in Bangkok as an expat for quite some time, and for some reason, I got to know the tourist attractions around Bangkok, thus some of them are the temples, however Iā€™ve never really had the chance to try the local kind of style transportation around Bangkok when it comes to touristy thing, as I normally go on tour trips whenever my friends or my family visiting me, for itā€™s comfortable and convenient.
Tumblr media
(Temple guard at Wat Arun)
Few days ago, my best friend from the Philippines visited me in Bangkok, thus, Iā€™ve decided to tour him around and gave it a shot on trying to travel a local style as possible and not go on touristy kind of trip.
In this blog episode, Iā€™m sharing my thoughts, insights, and wisdom about how I spent less than 15 USD on visiting (for a day) popular temples here in Bangkok.
Bangkok, or the city of Angels, the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand, is a popular tourist destination for its exotic and unique South East Asian culture. Thus, known for its Buddhism religion culture, so as its beautiful Buddhist temples, less expensive shopping, hence, and perhaps, the best street food, on personal note, yet.
Fast forward, I booked a hotel near the sky train station, CHONG NONSI STATION to be exact, as it is convenient and easy wherever or whenever I plan to go around Bangkok. For me, I think, Chong Nonsi station is the most convenient station as it is just few rides away from malls, bars or clubs, hippie cafes, to night or flee markets, thus the street food shops, perhaps among the few tourist spots in the city. So, if you are planning to book for a hotel in Bangkok, it is better to book near the sky train stations or subway stations.Ā
We started our journey at around 11 in the morning after we had our brunch from a nearby hippie cafe named Chu. From Chong Nonsi station, we stopped at Saphan Taksin station (Fare: 25 Thai Baht), as it is the station for river boat taxis in getting to the popular temples in the city. From Saphan Taksin station, go to Exit 2. Then, go down to the station, and from there, you can see the river boat taxi station (Sathorn Station).
Tumblr media
(BIG BREAKFAST at Chu!)
From the river boat taxi station (Chao Phraya Express Boat), go to the lane which is not a Chaophraya Tourist Boat (blue flag) and pay from 10 Thai Baht - 32 Thai Baht (no flag, orange, red and yellow flags), depending on the distance. You will see the differences on the river boat taxis, as there are no flags, orange flags, yellow flags, green flags, and blue flags. It was convenient of course, as thereā€™s a different lane for blue flags only. We went for the orange flag river boat then.Ā
First templeā€¦ Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn)
Tumblr media
(Feeling hot at the temple of the dawn)
Since Thailand is a tropical country, expect for a tropical weather. Although itā€™s rainy season now (August), still, in most times here in Bangkok, it is always sunny. So, might as well bring umbrellas or fans, if you think it is convenient. At least, during our trip then, it was a bit cloudy, but itā€™s still hot. So, bring lots of bottled water. Hydrate yourself!
Entrance fee in Wat Arun for tourist: 50 Thai Baht/person
Tumblr media
(The reclining Buddha at Wat Pho)
Second templeā€¦ Wat Pho (Temple of the reclining Buddha)
From Sathorn Station (river boat taxi station) to Wat Arun, I paid only 15 Thai Baht.Ā From Wat Arun, our next stopā€¦ Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha). Still, in orange flag river boat taxi, paid for only 15 Thai Baht.
Tumblr media
(Taking my moments to think about life and rest at Wat Pho)
This is probably my fourth or fifth time visit in Wat Pho since I started living here in the city of Angels, however, this temple always amazes me thus gives me so much excitement whenever I tour my family or friends. Every time I visit this place, it always remind me so much of good memories with my family and friends.
Entrance fee in Wat Pho for tourist: 100 Thai Baht/person
Tumblr media
(Hand-crafted Khon masks for sale at Wat Pho)
After spending hours at the temples, weā€™ve decided to take a break for a bit at a nearby cafe to have iced cold drinks as the weather was really hot. And yes, I had to change shirt since I was sweating all over. Itā€™s better to bring at least a shirt or you can buy at shops just outside the temples. For about an hour at the cafe chilling, we went to the third, and perhaps, the last temple visit then, Wat Saket (Golden Mount) by a tuk tuk since our feet, somehow, got tired.
Third templeā€¦ Wat Saket (Golden Mount)
Tumblr media
(Hot afternoon on the way to the top of Golden Mount)
Although Iā€™ve heard of this temple before, but this was my first time to visit in this temple. A new adventure, Iā€™d say. Wat Saket is actually not far from Wat Pho by walk, however, during that time then, was the peak when the sun was really shining. So, we didnā€™t really bother much walking. Thus, tuk tuk ride to the rescue!
Entrance fee in Wat Saket: 20 Thai Baht
Also, the thing about tuk tuk ride, is that there is no specific price for every ride. So, all you gotta do is haggle. As I have always said in my previous blog post, the lower the price, the better. And of course, start from low-balls. The initial payment was supposedly 60 Thai Baht since itā€™s not really far from Wat Pho to Wat Saket. Perhaps, 20-30 minutes, including the traffic, but since the driver was really nice to us then, we gave him a hundred. Tuk tuk rides are normally 200 to 300 Thai Baht, depending on the distance of your trip, but since I was able to speak a little Thai language, I was able to haggle, but it also depends on how you deal with the driver. It all comes to wits, maybe?
Tumblr media
(A bit blur, but still breathing, while on our way to the Golden Mount with my iced cold thai tea and best friend Jason)
I think, on a personal note, Wat Saket is still a hidden gem for temples at the heart of the city, although itā€™s touristy for locals, or perhaps, worshipers, but during the time that we went there, were mostly locals worshiping and praying. And so, I did my own personal prayers, too.
From Wat Saket, we tried the Khlong boat, another river boat taxi, but itā€™s more like going through on canals. Phan Fa Lilat station (this is the station in Wat Saket) to Pratunam (city center) station (Khlong boat stations) costs 11 Thai Baht. From Pratunam then, there are Sky Train station, you can go either in Siam Station or Chidlom Station, going back to the hotel.
Tumblr media
(Khlong boat ride to Pratunam from Wat Saket)
For better understanding on the express boat route, you can visit the website: chaophrayaexpressboat.com
As for the fare rides on sky trains, it starts at 10 Thai Baht to 57 Thai Baht (0.3 USD - 1.7 USD) depending on each station. The further the more expensive, of course.
Overall expenses:
River boat taxis: 30 Thai Baht
Wat Arun: 50 Thai Baht
Wat Pho: 100 Thai Baht
Wat Saket: 20 Thai Baht
Khlong boat taxi: 11 Thai Baht
Tuk tuk ride: 100 Thai Baht
Sky Train: 25 Thai Baht
TOTAL: 361 Thai Baht/10.47 USD
To wrap up this blog post episode, I hope it will help you with your itinerary to your temple visits in Bangkok, the city of Angels. I think, on a personal note, itā€™s about a personal choice. Then again, if you want to be an extravagant tourist, go for it, as long as you are able and capable. However, if you want something for an adventure, exciting yet less expensive, still, itā€™s all up to you. Above all, the purpose of this traveling journey is not just about selfies, right? I believe, itā€™s all about learning about life itself.

Special mention to my best friend Jason for visiting me in Bangkok during my birthday. Thank you, bes! You can search him on instagram: ohhhohhhjason

The approach from Bali to Flores is a flip-book of natural spectacles. Volcanoes alternate with green hills, emerald bays with steep cliffs and the million fold blue gradations of the Indian Ocean.
A tour in the Komodo National Park ā€“ turtles, manta rays, monitor lizards and a fantastic nature
The legendary Pink Beach (Pantai Merah) on Komodo Island
When you fly from Bali with Garuda Indonesia to Flores, you will climb into a small propeller plane that looks a bit like it was pulled out of a comic strip. The narrow plane, whose interior design seems daring (dirty seats, narrow seats, low ceilings), is your first step into a world that has little in common with Baliā€™s well-organized, established tourism.
How to get to Labuan Bajo
The easiest way to get to Flores/Labuan Bajo is clearly the flight. There are currently direct connections from e.g. Denpasar, Bali and Praya, Lombok. But the Komodo airport is also connected to other cities within Indonesia, including Jakarta and Surabaya. For more information on connections and which airlines are available, visit Skyscanner.
Also a (very long and exhausting) journey from Bali/Lombok over Sumbawa is possible. The journey starts from East Lombok by ferry to Sumbawa, then to Bima and then on to Sape, where you can catch another ferry to Labuan Bajo. Also, from Lombok you can book a multi-day boat trip to Flores. Very popular is the provider Perama Tours.
Komodo: Tours and tickets
One night in Labuan Bajo is enough
Arriving at Flores after about 2 hours flight, you can take a cheap taxi to the city of Labuan Bajo (the airport is almost inside the city). Youā€™ll probably be disappointed at first ā€“ narrow, dusty streets, hostels and a few scattered restaurants: at first glance Labuan Bajo doesnā€™t have much to offer. The impression persists.
After our arrival at the nice Danke Lodge, which is a little outside the city center, we explored the surroundings by foot. The poverty that characterizes the eastern islands of Indonesia cannot be overseen. Provisional huts and a sparse infrastructure dominate the landscape.
The population living in Labuan Bajo is predominantly Christian. The fishermen you will meet on the way to the national park are Muslim though (they originally originated from other islands).
Keyword fishermen: Donā€™t miss the night market (Pasar Malam) in the center of Labuan Bajo (every local knows the way to get there), where you can get fresh fish, shrimps, lobsters, mussels and other delicacies at a very reasonable price. The chefs only speak Indonesian, but they certainly understand what they can whip up for you. Just point your finger at it! The night market is not only visited by tourists, but also by many locals ā€“ a sign that the food should be good!
Fresh seafood at the night market (Pasar Malam) in Labuan Bajo
After a restless night in the guesthouse (the prices in Labuan Bajo are approx. 50% above the level of southern Bali, depending on the season) we set off to ā€œcheck inā€ at our tour operator. We booked our tour in advance (after extensive TripAdvisor research). We decided on Wunderpus Liveaboard.
In the office our wet suits, snorkels and fins were fitted and we had to pay (in addition to the price for the tour) various national park fees. These added up to 20 EUR (conversion rate January 2019) per day. The fees are requested by the government and often changed/raised. Recently the Jakarta Post printed a statement of the governor of the region: He is planning to raise the entrance fees for the Komodo National Park to a hefty 500 USD (no kidding) per day. So far, so startling.
Sunset in Labuan Bajo
Wild Waves on the way to Komodo National Park
The start of our tour the next day was scheduled for seven oā€™clock, where we would meet our 5 international companions at the pier.
There we were taken to our boat, the ā€œMimicā€. A former traditional fishing boat on which we were permitted to spend the next 3 days and 2 nights. The actual Komodo National Park is a 3-4 hours boat ride from Labuan Bajo harbour. The trip there is depending on the season (we were on the way in November) nothing for the faint of heart (and stomach). However, you will be rewarded with a panorama (above and below the water!) that is second to none. Our first mooring point was Padar Island ā€“ an island that is only populated by (according to the guideā€™s statement) ā€œfewā€ Komodo dragons and their main dish, deer.
Lunch on the boat
Padar Island makes you sweat
The reason why you should climb the sweaty steep steps up to the summit of Padar Island is the amazing view of 3 beaches in different colours: white, pink and black. The guides made sure that we, the various Chinese tour groups and a few backpackers reached the summit in time for sunset. This view is hard to surpass and unparalleled: gold, white, pink, black and blue are merging into each other and are creating a magnificent view of the bay. Itā€™s worth the climb!
View from Padar island (Pulau Padar)
Sunset view from Padar Island
The unique underwater world of Komodo National Park
Our night on the boat turned out to be interesting: all 6 guests slept on the upper deck, protected from rain by a canopy. However, it was open to the sides, which led to everyone waking up with the sunrise and getting ready for stacks of Banana Pancakes with Nutella, which were prepared in the small galley. A delicious and necessary invigoration for the next stage: snorkeling with the manta rays.
So we jumped into the water, looked down and after a few seconds they hovered up: magical creatures that moved as if they were flying through the water. Imagine, these animals have a wingspan of up to 6 meters! More and more manta rays joined in. The spot was a so-called cleaning station, where the rays lingered to be cleaned by smaller fish of parasites, fungi and dirt. A washing facility so to speak and a beautiful display of nature of which we just couldnā€™t get enough.
For snorkeling (for diving this is a given) I recommend that you also wear a wet suit, as it gets a bit cold in the water (even in the tropics) when waiting for rays, turtles and other marine life.
During our trip we saw manta rays, turtles or reef sharks (black- and white tip) at almost every single snorkeling and diving stop. The biodiversity of this beautiful place literally takes your breath away.
Manta ray
Trekking on Komodo Island
On the next day we finally headed to the eponymous island of the park: Komodo Island.
Entrance to the Komodo National Park
A few quick facts about Komodo Island:
The island of Komodo covers 390 kmĀ²
3000 Komodo dragons and 2000 residents live here
There is a small village school (up to fourth grade)
The area was declared a national park in 1980
Komodo belongs to the driest places of the Indonesian archipelago. This can be observed in the vegetation, which impresses with its rather rough charm dominated by sand, dust and bone-colored tree trunks. When we arrived on the island, we were warmly welcomed by the local rangers and were allowed to choose between different footpaths across the island, which were aptly called ā€œShort Trekā€, ā€œMedium Trekā€ and ā€œLong Trekā€. We took the medium one and it took us a little more than an hour. Each group was accompanied by at least 2 rangers, one walking in front and one behind, each equipped with a stick. Walking around the island by yourself is not permitted (and not smart).
If you decide to go on a trek on Komodo (which can almost only be booked in conjunction with a snorkeling and diving safari), stock up on sun screen, mosquito spray and a bottle (not plastic!) of water ā€“ the scorching heat of the island shouldnā€™t be underestimated.
Monitor lizards ā€“ cannibal dragons
After quite a short time we could already see the first Komodo dragons moving slowly but steadily (they can run up to 20 km/h fast if they want) across the hot sand. Imagine them like mini dinosaurs. With their split tongue they are able to capture smells in the air, so itā€™s constantly in action, moving back and forth similar to the tongue of a snake.
The guide told us that Komodo dragons only eat about once a month; it takes them about 15-20 minutes to devour a goat or deer. As digestion and decomposition of their meal takes a long time, the lizards lie in the sun after a meal to speed up digestion. If they would not do so, the prey would rot in the belly of the dragon and poison it from the inside. Most of the lizards we saw moved back and forth in the sun quite leisurely.
Not-so-fun facts about Komodo dragons:
The dragons weigh an average of 70 kg and are considered an endangered species; they can only be found on Komodo, Rinca and Padar.
Komodo dragons are cannibals ā€“ and also like to eat their children! These rescue themselves by spending the first couple of years of their lives mainly on trees.
There have been some incidents involving humans and lizards, so staying on the paths and following the rangers increases your chance of not becoming a dragon snack.
Despite these somewhat intimidating facts, I strongly recommend that you go and visit these prehistoric looking animals. With your visit, you are also helping to maintain the National Park and preserve many rare species of fauna and flora threatened by extinction.
Komodo is worth it!
After the arrival by boat in Labuan Bajo on the third day we enjoyed a pizza in La Cucina ā€“ a restaurant with Italian home cooking popular amongst both Italians and other tourists with its beautiful view of the harbour and the illuminated ships. Here you can relax and finish your trip, share adventure stories with other travelers or just eat a pizza.
A trip to Komodo is certainly not a comfortable trip to leisure and lounge ā€“ but an adventure to marvel, sweat, experience and discover unforgettable sunsets, strange primeval animals, elegant manta rays and feel the salt on your skin. Visit as long as the admission is still reasonable and the islands are not overrun with tourists yet ā€“ itā€™s worth it!
