Chapter One: Valerius POV
Valerius let his gaze fall, the minutes ticking away in his mind as he let Nerva lead them further inward. She knew the way home. Although, he doubted they would make it farther than the outer markets they now walked sedately through.
This early only the most ambitious of merchants were already awake. A few stalls selling hot soybean milk or Riyukezu-style tea were raising their awnings and the vapors of their wares wafted over the street. The familiar aroma of sweet milk, roasted green tea, boiled corn, and tea-stewed eggs made Valerius’ stomach rumble. He had eaten sparsely, forcing down dry biscuits and drier jerky each day. It was enough not to starve, but not enough to truly satisfy. While most stalls catered to the tastes of the overwhelming Riyukezan majority, more than a handful were selling fare that was more readily found outside Riyushu. At one stall, the scent of spicy meat and corn masa reminded him so much of the meals he’d eaten the past few weeks—of Marya’s teary-eyed laughter and the frost on his lips from Arash’s tapping claw—that Valerius reined Nerva to a stop without conscious thought.
The vendor at the stall looked up from a large clay pot, steam pouring from the lifted lid like a newly erupted volcano. The man smiled and bowed the Riyukezan way, but greeted him in Mekshan, over-friendly and welcoming. Off-putting. But Valerius was already swinging down, his eyes on the neat rectangles wrapped in yellow corn husks and pressed close together, their tops open and the scent free. A sign proclaiming fresh tamales was painted directly onto the easily collapsible, moveable, clapboard stall.
“I’ve got meat and meatless, whatever you like, señor. And hot coffee, too,” the man said, waving towards a small kettle on an open-flame hob and a large sack full of glistening beans.
Valerius didn’t like heavy breakfasts. Coffee made his hands jitter. But he stared at the offerings, jaw tense and body unmoving. Silently, he reached for his pouch and took out the required tin coins and let them fall, one by one, into the man’s open palm. Dark eyes darted over Valerius’ face, and the Lance wondered what emotion he was seeing on the vendor’s face: confusion, amusement, or perhaps pity? The twist of the man’s lips and the rising of his eyebrows were baffling. The moment the man turned away and Valerius barely held back a sigh of relief.
“How about you get one of each, señor, and a cup of coffee? You’ve given me enough here for it. I’ll fix it up nice.”
“I.” Valerius stopped, lips pressing into a line as the man turned back. Dark skin, darker eyes, and a fringe of hair above the man’s upper lip that had curled up into a smile that seemed warm. Friendly with his voice. “I don’t drink coffee.”
“You got that Riyukezan look,” the man said, nodding slightly. “Why don’t you try it one more time? I’ve got a trick to it. I got Riyukezu coming back every day for a cup, you’ll see, señor.”
Just like Marya, never taking “no” for answer. Valerius’ lips twitched in an answering smile. After a tiny jerk of his chin down into a nod, the vendor picked up a can to pour in a generous amount of viscous white liquid that was too thick to be milk, then poured a ladle full of steaming black coffee into a mug. A powder too red and soft to be brown sugar followed. Valerius took the mug in a hand that completely dwarfed the small clay cup. It was sweeter than any coffee he’d ever tasted with a hint of spice that he finally recognized as cinnamon. Whatever face he seemed to be making had the vendor chuckling.
“Like I said, they come back every day,” he joked. “It’s sweet milk condensad.”

"Çocuklarını yalanlarla eğiten bir ulusun "sahte zaferinin" yıldönümü bugün... Bir kez daha zafer törenleri düzenleyecekler. Bir kez daha bu devleti nasıl zorluklarla kurduklarını anlatacaklar. Çektikleri acıları anlatırken çektirdiklerini yine hiç dile getirmeyecekler. Devletin kuruluş anayasası olan Lozan Antlaşması'nın Kürdistan'ı nasıl bölüp parçaladığını, Kürt halkını lime lime ettiğini, akrabaların arasına duvarlar ördüğünü, bir anadilin nasıl yasaklandığını hiç anlatmayacaklar. Onlar bu devleti kurarken bir tek kimliği esas aldılar: Türk ve Sünni Müslüman. Bunun dışındaki tüm etnik ve dinsel kimlikler yok sayıldı. İnsanlara "kimliğine sahip çıkma hakkı" yasaklandı. Devletin kuruluşunu bir "kopuş" veya "devrim" diye anlatırken, Lozan'da Osmanlı'nın tüm borçlarını devraldıklarını gizlediler. Kuruluş kadrolarının Ermeni soykırımına katılmış olan İttihatçılar olduğunu ve bu soykırımın ardında yatan zihniyeti desteklediklerini gizlediler. 1925'te çıkarttıkları Şark Islahat Planı'nı tarih kitaplarında hiç okutmadılar. Bu planla coğrafyayı beş parçaya ayırdıklarını, her parçaya müfettişler atadıklarını, Kürtlere en küçük bir memuriyet hakkını dahi yasakladıklarını, Kürdistan'da Kürtlüğü unutturmak amacıyla Türk ocakları ve okullar açtıklarını hiç anlatmadılar. Planın 17. maddesinde, "Fırat'ın batısındaki illerin batı bölümüne yerleştirilecek Kürtlerin dağınık şekilde Kürtçe konuşmaları mutlaka yasaklanacak," hükmünü getirdiklerini hep gizlediler. 1938'de gerçekleştirdikleri Dersim soykırımını ders kitaplarında anlatmadılar. Hiçbir kitapta devletin kurucularından İsmet İnönü'nün, "Türk milleti bu ülkede etnik ya da ırki birtakım haklar isteyebilir. Başka hiçbir kişinin buna hakkı yoktur," sözlerine yer vermediler. Yine ders kitaplarında İhsan Sabri Çağlayangil'in, "Ordu zehirli gaz kullandı, mağaraların kapısının içinden... Bunları fare gibi zehirledi. Ve 7'den 70'e Dersim Kürtlerini kestiler. Kanlı bir hareket oldu. Dersim davası da bitti," sözlerini çocuklara anlatmadılar. Cumhuriyet belki de en büyük haksızlıklarından birini kadınlara yaptı.

I post dei politici “rammaricati” sono vergognosi. Gli operai non muoiono per caso di Saverio Tommasi È morta una ragazza di 22 anni sul lavoro a Montemurlo, cioè a due schioppi di fucile da casa mia, e si chiamava Luana D’Orazio, un'operaia morta intrappolata in un orditoio. Io non sapevo neanche cosa fosse un orditoio, prima d'oggi. Poi ho letto sia un macchinario che permette di preparare l'ordito, in modo che possa essere montato su un telaio da tessitura. Cosa vuol dire ancora non lo so, ora però che me lo immagino, immagino lei trascinata dentro. Quattro giorni fa è morto anche Mattia, 23 anni a Montebelluna, è morto sotto un'impalcatura, dicono "un carico sospeso", che a dire così sembra meno grave e anche responsabilità sua. Il 2 febbraio a Prato invece è morto Sabri, schiacciato da una macchina per la cardatura. La cardatura è un'operazione che precede il processo di filatura della lana. La cardatura è un po' come l'ordito, sono vocaboli di 50 anni fa, e anche le morti sono come quelle di 50 anni fa, anche se oggi siamo nel 2021. Ieri è morta Luana D'Orazio, l'ho conosciuta leggendo le agenzie che rimbalzavano la notizia della morte, che è poi solo un altro aspetto terribile della dipartita: gente che sa della tua esistenza dopo che non ci sei più. E qualcuno si accorge di quanto ti voleva bene un po’ troppo tardi. Quelle sul lavoro le chiamano morti bianche, ma invece sono morti rosso sangue, soprattutto se vieni stritolato o schiacciato, che in realtà il sangue non è neanche rosso, quando si rapprende a terra diventa viola scuro e quasi nero. È di questo colore il sangue di una persona morta sul lavoro, intrappolata in un orditoio o sotto un carico sospeso che poi si è staccato, o schiacciata da una macchina per la cardatura. Certi verbi come schiacciato, intrappolato, stritolato, si portano la morte dentro. E allora bisogna dirli altrimenti sembra che siano morti per caso o di sonno. Invece sono morti sul lavoro e non per caso. Per questo io ho brutte opinioni dei politici eletti che prendono stipendi per fare le leggi e stabilire i controlli, e poi invece campano facendo post di cordoglio su Facebook. "Quanto mi dispiace", scrivono. "Bisogna ristabilire le priorità". "Non si può morire di lavoro a 22 anni", ecco per cominciare io direi neanche a 70. E sotto il post la collezione di "riposa in pace". Come se le leggi non dovessero farle proprio loro, come se la colpa fosse del fato, o fosse degli altri e mai la loro; non dico per la morte di Luana, di Mattia o di Sabri, intendo per la morte di tutti. Come funzionano il distretto tessile di Pistoia o quello di Prato, da queste parti lo sanno i bambini appena nascono, che tutti in famiglia conoscono qualche sfruttato, o hanno avuto un’azienda chiusa da una concorrenza sleale, o vedono una luce accesa in una fabbrica che di notte dovrebbe stare chiusa, o hanno partecipato prima a un funerale che a una comunione. Lo sanno anche i politici, ma poi alle cene invitano i padroni, perché gli operai non possono permettersi di finanziare le campagne elettorali. E allora non scandalizzatevi se muore Luana D’Orazio di 22 anni e lascia un bambino di 5. “Scandalo” è una parola preziosa, lasciatela a noi, che per voi è solo amministrazione dell’esistente, forse giusto con una punta di dispiacere quando tornate a casa e lo specchio vi riflette dentro, senza fare sconti. Scandalo lasciatelo dire a noi, che a voi in fondo va benissimo così.
