A Merry Scottish Christmas (2023)
Ok, this is another Hallmark movie that is available on Netflix for the rest of the month. Hallmark and Netflix must have some kind of deal so that Netflix doesn't have to make a ton of their own Christmas movies anymore. Perhaps Vanessa Hudgens is unavailable. This is also kind of a weird movie.
Dr. Lindsay Morgan (Lacey Chabert) and her brother Brad Morgan (Scott Wolf) and his wife Sarah (Kellie Blaise) meet at an airport on their way to Christmas with their mother Josephine (Fiona Bell) at Glencrave castle in Scotland. This is awkward for everyone because Lindsay and Brad are estranged and doing nothing to be pleasant to each other, while Sarah is acting like there's nothing weird going on. Sarah's entire personality in this movie is being nice and acting like nothing weird is going on. Sarah needs anxiety meds. Anyway, shortly after arriving at the castle, they find out that duke who ran the 30,000 acre estate and supported the town near the castle recently passed away.
Not shocking to the audience but shocking to Lindsay and Brad, the recently deceased duke is also their estranged uncle. Their mother is now duchess and either one or both of them must take over or she will sell the estate and the town nearby will probably collapse. However, Lindsay runs a general practice clinic in California and Brad is a tax attorney, so they're not really sure they want such a drastic change. So then we get a bunch of different activities that teach them about their family history and traditions in the area. It helps that the groundskeeper Mac Bell (James Robinson) is attractive, single, and was close enough to the late duke to help them run the estate.
Going any further would spoil the ending, but also, we know how it ends. But being predictable doesn't bother me unless it's tedious; this was not. It offered a lot of fun information about Scottish traditions. However, it was weird to have the sibling relationship be at the center of the movie and to squeeze in a love interest. Like, they're not married at the end, and she didn't stay for him, but it felt weird. I didn't hate the Christmas music on bagpipes though. Overall, 2 stars.

In order to name a specific person as your executor, you need to have a will - otherwise the court will appoint someone, usually a family member, which is exactly what a lot of you don't want. With legal gay marriage, your spouse is the first priority choice for executor unless you choose someone else, and they'll keep their access to joint property, policies and bank accounts. When there isn't a will OR a marriage, shit gets really gray legally.
If you're a grown adult who pays your own bills, has your own bank accounts, has any retirement plans/has ever contributed to social security, and/or have life insurance, you should have a will. I know, I know, there's always time for that.
Spoiler: there is not, in fact, always time for that and it becomes a mess for your loved ones to deal with if you didn't.
You can say you know you partner's wishes, but you will be tied up a lot longer in probate if there's no will even if there are no challenges (probate=the legal process of disposing of an estate). Probate is MUCH shorter when there is a legally sound will - you can't do that shit like on TV where you write "I leave all my worldly possessions to my love, X. Havisham-Goode" on a piece of notebook paper and have a nurse and a janitor date and sign as witnesses - well, you CAN, but it's not like Murder She Wrote, your survivor will probably not find it very useful. Without a will, executor or not, if there's a challenge whoever can afford the most for lawyers will probably end up winning the battle for whatever property/belongings were at issue - like a shared house or bank accounts.
You can buy willmaking software that will do the job for most of us who don't have lots of property, but resign yourself to probably having to spend between $150-300, or more depending on how complicated your situation is/what kind of mutual property you own. If you have a house, significant retirement income in a 401K/IRA/other investments, and/or ESPECIALLY if you have kids, you should probably talk to a lawyer in person - guardianships in particular are nothing to fuck around with on an amateur level. DuckDuckGo "LGBT estate planning (your city/county/state)" to find someone knowledgeable near you, check the Better Business Bureau/Google for reviews, ask your friends who they used. It's not important you LIKE your lawyer, but you should feel like they know what they're doing and are professionally respected.
Look up your state's specific laws and constitution; it's unlikely that the Trump administration will be able to just retroactively ban gay marriages and say none of them ever existed. HOWEVER, what could happen is exactly what happened when Roe was overturned - states that have their own specifically gender neutral or specifically queer marriage friendly laws will continue to allow gay marriage that will need to be honored because of interstate commerce clauses but forbidden to continue in unfriendly states. What would be a whole disaster is if both Obergefell were overturned and the Respect for Marriage Act (2022) had constitutional challenge brought and was overturned - and even then, there would need to be a new federal law passed to forbid gay marriage. This process would not be able to happen on January 21st, 2025 - but be sure they'll be trying for it sometime over the next four years.
What you all need to do is not wait for there to be publicity about it. Hammer your Congressperson, blue or red, male or female, actual phone calls best, second letters, third faxes, fourth emails with YOU LEAVE GAY MARRIAGE THE FUCK HOW IT IS OR YOU'RE GETTING PRIMARIED (maybe a little nicer than that - but ONLY a little)
And fill out your durable power of attorneys, healthcare directives and write your wills in the meantime. They're good things to do even if the fashies don't come for gay marriage; they're a form of tangible help and support you can give your spouse even when you can't do it in person any more. Believe me when I tell you serious illness or death is going to be horrendous for your loved one WITHOUT having to book a seance to figure out what you really wanted, and it'll be invaluable if the worst does happen legally.
Before January 2025:
If you are a USAmerican in a relationship that might be affected by legislation that dissolves same-sex marriages, who may no longer be recognized as next-of-kin, especially if you have children, get your rights in writing!
Your marriage certificate may not be enough to prove you have rights to make medical decisions for non-biological children or for a same-sex spouse or partner.
Go to a lawyer, get it spelled out as clearly as possible that you have a voice in emergency medical and legal situations.

Finding Reliable Lawyers Nearby: You’re Go-To Guide
In the digital age, searching for "lawyers near me" has become a common way for individuals to find legal assistance swiftly and conveniently. Whether you're dealing with a complex legal matter or seeking guidance for a simple issue, having access to trustworthy legal counsel in your vicinity can be invaluable. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate this search effectively.
1. Understanding Your Legal Needs
Identify the specifics of your legal requirements. Are you looking for a divorce attorney, a real estate lawyer, a personal injury expert, or assistance with business law? Each specialization requires distinct expertise. Clarifying your needs will narrow down your search and lead you to lawyers specializing in relevant areas.
2. Referrals and Recommendations
Tap into your network for recommendations. Friends, family, colleagues, or even other professionals you trust might have suggestions based on their experiences. Personal referrals often provide valuable insights into a lawyer's capabilities and reliability.
3. Online Directories and Reviews
Utilize online resources such as Google, Yelp, or specialized legal directories to find lawyers in your area. These platforms often provide reviews and ratings from previous clients, offering insights into the quality of service provided by the lawyers.
4. Consult Bar Associations
Local bar associations have directories of licensed attorneys. They can provide you with a list of lawyers practicing in your region along with their areas of expertise, allowing you to find someone well-suited to your needs.
5. Evaluate Credentials and Experience
Once you've compiled a list of potential lawyers, delve deeper into their credentials. Check their education, certifications, years of practice, and success rates in handling cases similar to yours. Experience often plays a crucial role in legal matters.
6. Arrange Consultations
Most lawyers offer initial consultations either free of charge or at a nominal fee. Take advantage of this opportunity to meet the attorney in person or virtually. Use this time to discuss your case, understand their approach, and gauge if they're a good fit for you.
7. Assess Communication and Compatibility
Effective communication is key in any attorney-client relationship. Evaluate whether the lawyer listens attentively, communicates clearly, and makes you feel comfortable. Compatibility and a good rapport can greatly impact the overall experience.
8. Consider Costs and Fees
Discuss the fee structure upfront. Some lawyers charge by the hour, while others may work on a contingency or flat fee basis. Ensure you understand the costs involved and any additional expenses related to your case.
9. Trust Your Instincts
Ultimately, trust your instincts. If something feels off or if you don't feel confident in the lawyer's abilities, it might be best to continue your search. Your comfort and trust in your legal representation are paramount.
10. Finalize Your Decision
After careful consideration of all factors, make an informed decision. Notify the chosen lawyer and begin the process of retaining their services.
Conclusion
Finding reliable lawyers nearby requires a systematic approach involving research, referrals, consultations, and thorough evaluation. By following these steps, you can streamline the process and find legal counsel that meets your specific needs, providing you with the guidance and support necessary for your legal matters.

SHOOTING.
Continued from PAGE 17
Burley, who was raised in Dallas public housing, admitted in the film that robbery wasn't the motive.
He said that night, they were stalking gay men — men he considered "weak.'
Burley said they targeted men cruising the parks for their robbery-and-bashing attacks.
He said they could "snatch their clothes," and the victims would be too humiliated to report the incidents.
Burley's defense attorney Paul Johnson argued that Burley's gun accidentally went off, that Burley didn't intentionally kill Nguyen.
In "License to Kill," Burley detaches himself from the murder saying that the bullet killed Thanh — not Burley.
Johnson told jurors, "If Corey Burley wanted him dead, why didn't he shoot him again?"
In hate crime murders, the killers often own most of the story.
And in this killing, Burley often gets more attention than Nguyen, who's almost been forgotten.
Obtaining any pictures of Nguyen (other than images from the murder scene) for this article was not possible.
He was an immigrant who spent his boyhood years at a refugee camp before fleeing Vietnam and moving to Grand Prairie with family members.
In the U.S., he owned a commercial sewing machine and worked as a freelance tailor.
In Dallas, Nguyen joined the gay social group Asians and Friends, which was organized by John Pielsticker.
Pielsticker works as a real estate appraiser and runs Pro Nails & Spa on Cedar Springs Road.
In 1991, Pielsticker told This Reporter he watched a local TV news program that interviewed the female police officer who patrolled Reverchon.
And said she didn't think the attack was a gay bashing — just a random act of violence.
Seventeen years later, Pielsticker puts the story in perspective again.
He remembers talking about the gruesome details with Calloway and grieving with Asians and Friends members, who took a up collection for Nguyen family's to pay for funeral expenses.
Why didn't Burley shoot Nguyen again?
"My guess is that the attack and shooting were part of a gang initiation. That's why [Thorton] told Burley — who was the youngest of the three — to shoot Thanh," Pielsticker says.
Pielsticker points out that Nguyen was shorter than Calloway.
And because he was gay and Vietnamese, Nguyen was attacked much worse than Calloway.
During the 1992 murder trial, Burley said, "One of the dudes got hit and fell down. … .. '
A small path near this 911 location sign on the Katy Trail leads to the spot where Thanh Nguyen was murdered in 1991.
"Something went click in my head and told me to shoot the other one, 'cause I had already fucked up and shot one."
After the attack, Calloway did many TV and newspaper interviews.
Pielsticker even remembers Calloway appearing on CNN once.
In many stories, Calloway is depicted as Nguyen's "partner," which Pielsticker debates, saying he thought the men were just platonic friends.
In 1991, Calloway identified as HTV positive. Since 1979, he was busted for multiple DUIs.
In 1999, he was sentenced to Hutchins State Jail for aggravated assault and failure to stop and render aid.
In 2001, he wrote to POZ magazine because his prescription meds were cut off during incarceration.
In 2004, Calloway was released and put on probation until April 18,2009.
Earlier this week, The Reporter spoke with his supervising officer in Longview, who said Calloway has an arxest warrant for absconding and failing to report to his supervisor for the past two months.
While Calloway's reputation has tarnished over the years, in 1991 he bravely made police officials and the public recognize and acknowledge that the attack that killed his friend and left him crippled was indeed a hate crime — and not just a random act of violence motivated by robbery
All three assailants were been found guilty of murder and are still behind bars.
Today, on the Katy Trail, look for a round green street sign that says "Your 911 location is KT 104."
Follow the small path there, and behind the first row of bushes you'll find a stone picnic table.
That's where three men with a loaded gun went to stalk park cruisers because they thought gay men were weak.

How to Advertise Estate Planning Services?
Marketing estate planning services involve a balance of education, empathy, and strategy. Estate planning involves very personal and passionate matters; there is a need to understand what drives clients to engage in this area. This guide will involve effective strategies, key platforms, and best practices required by law firms and agencies in building a successful estate planning marketing campaign.
How to Market Your Estate Planning Services
First, you have to understand that estate planning services are not an impulse purchase. Clients engage in estate planning because something has happened in their lives-such as buying a house, having children, or reaching a certain age or because of some sense of responsibility to ensure their family's future security. To market effectively:
Educate Potential Clients: The bulk of information you are offering to your audiences should be educative on estate planning. These can be done through blog posts, guides, and videos that create value for your firm and establish it as the authority.
Engage the Audience with Client-Centric Messages: Appeal to clients with messages highlighting protection or benefits for their loved ones; appeal to emotional motives to come to you for planning: "Protect Your Family's Future" or "Smooth Transition for Your Heirs".
Leverage High-Intent Keywords: Google Ads targeting keywords such as "estate planning attorney near me" or "how to create a will" show up for people actively looking for your services.
What Is the Best Way to Market Estate Planning?
The best way to market estate planning services includes a mix of both digital and traditional strategies :
SEO: Ensure the optimization of your website with major search engines for local searches like "estate planning lawyer in [City]." Employ relevant keywords so that when clients are searching, your services will turn up.
Pay-Per-Click (PPC): Google Ads are one of the most effective forms of capturing search traffic. Run ads targeting keywords such as "estate planning services" and "estate planning attorney.
Content Marketing: Creating informative content for your blog or YouTube can engender trust. Articles and videos based on topics like "Why You Need a Will" or "The Basics of a Trust" answer general questions that might pop into prospective clients' minds.
Social Media: Estate planning is not the type of topic that people would normally discuss casually. However, it can be an awareness builder on social media. Ads via Facebook and LinkedIn tend to work great, especially among older and professional audiences. How Do Estate Planning Lawyers Acquire New Clients?
