In this universe the battle of Kurukshetra never happens. Pandavas along with Arjuni are married to Draupadi, whereas Arjuni is also married to Krishna.
Being a woman, Arjuni was always criticised and underestimated by her own family members, especially her so called cousins known as the Kauravas, even though she was the best student of Dronacharya and the best Archer in the whole Aryavart.
Hastinapur is faced with a war from the enemy kingdom, Magadha. The Kauravas and Pandavas, forced to work together, were discussing in the court of Hastinapur. Arjuni, being the brilliant strategist she is, tries to put forth her ideas but is put down by Duryodhan.
"Just listen to me once—" She tries again.
"Oh just stop it, dear cousin! You are a woman. Go work in the kitchens or something. This is not your cup of tea! We are men and better than you!" Duryodhan, the evil git, spats out. He even convinces his father, the blind fool Dhritarashtra. "Pitashree! Tell Arjuni that she is not allowed to participate in the war! Women are not made for fighting! They are only good with dancing, cooking and the other womenly talents and nothing else!"
"Of course, Putra, of course! You are right! Putri Arjuni, please do understand. You should not participate in this war." Arjuni scoffed in anger. She glanced at her brothers, who just looked the other way. She seethed at rage. How dare they talk this way about them and underestimate them WOMEN!? That enraged her.
Duryodhan smirked at her. As Bheem sensed his sister's anger, he reached his hands towards her, only for his hand to be smacked away.

"Don't come crawling back to me then, Bhrata Duryodhan!" She said, her voice laced with poisonous venom. Arjuni turned away and stormed out of the Sabha, angrily.

The Pandavas regretted their decision of staying quiet. They just made their sister angry at ALL the men in the court, except for maybe her husband. As Nakul was about to follow, Draupadi was faster and she rushed behind her beloved wife. Krishna gave a disapproved look at Yudhishthir and followed behind his Sakhi, Yudhishthir sulking under his brother-in-law's gaze.
Both Krishna and Draupadi rushed to Arjuni's room. Arjuni had punched a mirror, whose shards dug into her hand but she didn't care. Her right hand was bleeding profusely.
"Aryaputri!" Draupadi yelled, tensed. Arjuni stopped with her rage and turned around slowly with anger written all over her face. Draupadi rushed forward and started to pull the mirror shards out of Arjuni's right arm and hand. "...i am alright, Drau."
"You are not alright, Parthavi. Both of us can sense it. Please stop hiding your true emotions, when with us atleast. Calm your anger down, priye, because we don't want to an angry Mahakali to destroy Hastinapur, now do we?" Krishna joked to calm his wife down, which seemed to work. Both the 'Krishnaa's laughed heartily as Kanha smiled goofily.
"I sense something is going to happen and you might have to go to the war, Priye Parthavi." Krishna said again. "Mhm...maybe. But i will never forgive them for belittling us women. Do they not understand..."
"Settle down, Aryaputri." Told Draupadi as she tied a cloth coated with medicine around Arjuni's arm for the wounds to heal. "As Govind said, you might have to go to the war. I mean, no one is a better warrior than you in our kingdom, not even Angaraj. Trust us." Agnisutaa soothed her. Savyasachi finally calmed down and gave a smile to the other two people, who blushed at her charming, pleasant smile.

As the Kuru heirs got ready for the war, Arjuni just stood there as they took their blessings. Nakul and Sahadev as well as some of the Kauravas, who saw her as their second mother and teacher, apologised and took her blessings. Arjuni being Karunamayi, blessed and forgave them as they didn't have any other choice other than to listen to their older brothers.
She watched as her brothers and cousins left for the war on their horses.
Soon in the evening, she recieved the news of all the Kuru princes being held hostage by the Magadha Raj Jarasandha and Vanraj Putra Ekalavya. Arjuni didn't even bother to do anything or show any emotion as she just walked away gracefully, ignoring all the stares and calls for her. Later, when she was alone, Dhritarashtra himself visited her and begged her to help his sons and her brothers. "Putri! Please heed this request of your tatshree! Please save them and assist them!"
Arjuni scoffed. "Oh please, tatshree! Women are not meant on the battlefield, like you said! Right? That will hurt their male ego if i go there! When they are so egoistic, they should help themselves without my help." She said no more and ignored and her uncle.
But Arjuni being her Karunamayi self, couldn't let her brothers and by default her cousins be hurt or killed, so she decided to go and prepare for war for the following day.
"Madhav, what should i do? I can not even let them get hurt as their sister, but they did so many hurtful things to me. I can not even decide..." Vijayaa exasperated. Shyamsundara put his hand on his wife's shoulder. "Don't you worry, Parthavi. I will be your charioteer, and charioteers are meant to show you the right path. I won't take any declination as an answer!" He said, smug. And she was forced to agree.

Gandivdhari left with her deadly bow, with Krishna as her charioteer. Upon reaching, she immediately starts firing thousands of arrows, destroying half of the Magadha forces. As she performed her dance of Destruction on the battlefield, she faced Ekalavya. Arjuni's trauma from Ekalavya's cut off thumb all those years ago came back. Vijayaa and Ekalavya kept firing deadly arrows with dealier accuracy at each other.
As she tensed, she was enveloped with sweet, flute melodies. It was not seeming like Ekalavya could hear them, so why was she....
Then it clicked. Muralimanohar was doing that!
She smiled at her husband, who smiled back.
Savyasachi then did something which no one could think of. She created an expanse of ice mirrors all around her opponent, who looked here and there, alarmed, as Savyasachi's reflection appeared in all of those mirrors, and she looked more and more deadly in each of them.
As Ekalavya stammered with his movements, Arjuni from who knows where appeared behind him. When Ekalavya turned to face her, she had already bind him with powerful paranormal ropes, and he hadn't even noticed. He then faced a powerful punch in his gut, resulting in him coughing out blood and falling unconscious.

Arjuni arrived where her cousins and brothers were held hostage, and with quick fluid movements, made each and every soldier on gaurd unconscious. She kicked down the jail gate.
"Arjuni?"
"Jyeshtaa!"
"You!—"
"Shut the hell up and follow me without making any sound. Or else we all will be in trouble." Arjuni said emotionlessly as she freed everyone from their binds.
With her help and guidance, Jarasandha was defeated that day and killed. His body was tore open by Bheem and thrown in two opposite directions, resulting in Jarasandha's death.

From that day onwards, no one belittled her or any other woman and always took her help, with almost everything.
The most shocking was Duryodhan's apology and ask for help from her.
"Hey..uh— Arjuni. I came here to apologise from you. I also need a little help—" as Duryodhan looked at his cousin's face, and was met with a gobsmacked expression on her attractive, bewitching face.
Arjuni checked if she was sick or if Duryodhan was ill by checking his forehead's temperature. She then rubbed her eyes and shook her head, not believing the sight infront of her. She then checked if her ears were working properly or not.
All the while Duryodhan looked embarrassed and Krishna and Draupadi were dying from laughing so much. Yajnaseni nearly fell from her place and Keshav have to support his Sakhi while clutching his hurting stomach from laughing so much. Yudhishthir was chuckling and Bheem was laughing merrily. Even the Kauravas laughed at their brother's poor state.
That was one of the most happiest and pleasant sights the castle had ever witnessed.

Tales of friendship...
Tale # 1: Drona & Drupada
This is a story straight out of Mahabharata.
In the Vedic period, Bharat was an assortment of kingdoms - one of which was Panchala, whose crown prince and heir apparent was a guy called Drupada. When he was a kid, as was the tradition in those times, his father, King Prishata, sent him to a Gurukul, where he met and bonded with a brahmin kid named Drona, son of Rishi Bharadwaj. Drona was an exceptional student, great athlete and a genius with weapons. Drupada was average. But they became bosom buddies.

One day, in a surge of youthful emotions, Drupada promises to give away half of his kingdom to Drona, when he became king. Both of the laugh at Drupada's bravado and neither of them takes him seriously.
Post their graduation from their Gurukul, Drupada goes back to his father's kingdom and in due course becomes King. Drona becomes the foremost expert in the land on weaponry and statecraft, but continues to lead a life of poverty and want. He marries Kripi and has a son - Ashwathama. His circumstances are dire.
One day, Drona sees his son humiliated by his friends because of his poverty and cannot bear it any longer. He remembers his friend, Drupada, now a king, and decides to seek his help. He goes to Panchala, enters the royal assembly with pompous familiarity, as if he is not meeting a king, but an equal, and does not seek for help, but demands it, reminding Drupada of his promise made years back, in a fit of youthful energy.

Drupada looks back at Drona, after all these years, and does not see a friend-in-need, asking for help, but a beggar bragging of old friendship, and demanding compensation for some childhood joke. He has Drona thrown out of his royal court, telling him friendship only counts between equals. Drona leaves, seething with humiliation and fury, and swears revenge.
In a strange twist of fate, Drona manages to get himself appointed as the martial teacher of the Kuru princes (Pandavas and Kauravas). His days of penury are over. He starts plotting revenge. He focuses on Arjuna, makes him the foremost archer on the planet, and in return, as Guru Dakshina, Drona asks Arjuna to defeat the Panchala king, Drupada, and gift him half the Panchala kingdom. Arjuna does it. Drona reminds a vanquished Drupada that now they are equals. But their friendship is fractured.

In true Godfather style (revenge is a dish best served cold), Drupada bides for his time. He conducts a yagna - a Putrakameshthi yagna - invoking the deity to bless with a son who will kill Drona. So was born Dhristadyumna, who goes on to kill Drona in the epic 18-day war at Kurukshetra, albeit with some cunning aid of Krishna and Yudhishthira themselves.

So, this was the first tale of friendship, which turned sour as children grew up to become adults.
Tale # 2: Krishna and Sudama
This is another story of friendship, told and retold from the Bhagawat Purana.

When Lord Krishna was Little Krishna, he and Balaram studied at the Gurukul of Sage Sandipani, in Ujjain (in some retellings, it is said to be in Vrindavan). There they met and made friends with a young Brahmin boy called Sudama. Krishna fell in love with his cute, innocent friend. Vice-versa.
One day, Krishna and Sudama were wandering in a nearby forest and lost their bearings. So they had to spend the night in the jungle. Naturally, they were hungry. Krishna asked Sudama if he had anything to eat. Sudama had some raw gram with him. But he was too embarrassed to share it with Krishna. He knew Krishna was a nobleman. So Sudama did not share the gram, ate some when he thought Krishna was asleep and let the Lord of the world go hungry.
Time flew. Krishna grew up and became an elite nobleman of Dwarka. He made friends with the Pandavas and played the Leela that he had descended on this earth to play. Sudama grew up to live in dire poverty, but with his mind and heart immersed in worship of the Lord. He lived an austere life, with sadhana, mantra and japa as his companions. He later married Susheela, a brahmin lady, who like him, had not much interest in accumulating any worldly wealth. Both of them lived simple, austere lives.
But soon they had kids. Such lives are not for householders. Their kids used to complain of hunger, regularly go to bed with their stomach empty and sometimes, ill. One day, Susheela gently requested Sudama to approach his friend, Krishna, the Lord of the universe, for assistance.
Sudama looked at her with mixed feelings. On the one hand, he did not like the idea of asking his friend for help. On the other hand, his heart swooned at the thought of meeting his childhood friend after such a long time. Krishna had now grown in Sudama's heart in such a way that he had become a devotee. He agreed to go.
Not knowing what to offer his childhood friend as a gift, Sudama asks Susheela to pack a bundle of Poha, which they recollect was Krishna's favorite dish in the ashram. The bundle of humble poha hung to his waist and a mixture of trepidation, love and devotion in his heart, he sets out (from what is modern day Porbandar) for Dwarka. Would his rich, noble friend, the Lord of the universe, even recognize him?

Of course, Krishna recognized him. And how! He ran out of his palace, hugged Sudama, welcomed him inside, made him sit on the throne, himself sat on the ground, washed Sudama's tired limbs with water and sandalwood and told everybody he met that his childhood friend had come to visit him. In a short while, the palace looked like celebrating a festival. Guards wondered. Who the hell was this guy? He looked like a beggar. But their Lord was going berserk in doling out hospitality. Rukmini, the Goddess of Wealth, the consort to the Lord, was fanning him!

Sudama himself was embarrassed, overwhelmed by the attention, uncomfortable in the glow of unaccustomed-to hospitality, awkward in his manners, but grateful in his heart.
Krishna made Sudama comfortable by enquiring about his family, reminiscing of their childhood days in the ashram and telling his queens what an amazing time they had as kids. Then Krishna saw the bundle tied to Sudama's waist and naughtily asked what it was.
Suddenly, Sudama felt small. His gift felt insignificant. The opulence of the palace shadowed his meager offerings. But Krishna was quick to see through his feelings. He insisted that Sudama give him the bundle, opened it himself and screamed excitedly when he saw his favourite dish - Poha. He took one handful and put it in his mouth. He took another mouthful again. As he was taking the third, Rukmini, the Goddess Incarnate of Wealth, stopped him, and said, "Lord, enough! You have given for seven generations!" Sudama wondered what she meant. But Lord Krishna stopped. Normal conversation continued.

Finally, it was time for Sudama to leave. He hugged his friend again and with his heart soaring, he returned to his village, feeling a twinge of remorse that he had not asked for financial help. What would he tell his wife? How would he feed his kids? But as soon as he entered the village, he saw that his house had become a mansion. His wife and kids rushed out of the mansion, decked in opulent clothes, happiness brimming in their faces.

That's when Sudama realised what Rukmini devi meant. With each mouthful of Poha, Lord Krishna had, in his infinite grace, bestowed untold riches to his friend and devotee, without he even asking for anything.
Sudama spent the rest of life singing the Lord's glory, his mind and heart immersed in faith.

@medhasree asked for a DVD Commentary for the last scene of pravilabhate. Under a cut because it’s sizeable.
So I know, I know Arjuna is Yudhishtira’s heir at this point, but this worked better for me so whatevs.
On the fifteenth day of the Yadavas’ visit, Emperor Yudhisthira holds court in Hastinapuri in awful splendour, and with Prince Parikshit in his lap.
“As clear a declaration as any,” Lakshmana murmurs. “Has a day been fixed for the coronation?”
“On Brihaspati’s day,” Yuyutsu murmurs back. “Did you doubt this would happen?”
I am also very curious about this, and I suppose Yaudheya is only quasi-canonical? But anyway, I wanted to emphasise the fact that even Yuyutsu--who knows more than the others--doesn’t actually know why the Pandavas are doing what they’re doing.
Yuyutsu himself is unsure of the way of it, of whether Princess Devika’s son too perished in battle childless, that Yudhisthira has to turn to his brother’s grandson. There were many dead in Kurukshetra, but surely the wailing would have been great for Yaudheya. King Shivi has sons and grandsons enough to be in no need of an heir from his daughter.
Except I agree with Lakshmana about this, and it feels like the best explanation for Parikshit, that he’s there because he’s the Yadava candidate.
“No,” Lakshmana says. “What the Yadavas set their minds to, they achieve, though the greatest archers of the Kurus stand in their way. Who now lives that knows it as well as I?”
“He would have pursued you until his death, but that your father feared the anger of Prince Balabhadra.”
“I blame neither him nor my father; I regret only that Prince Balabhadra’s neutrality did not come upon him earlier, that I might have had a husband my father or I chose.”
“Princess,” he reprimands, and when she nods, adds, “and you must learn not to call Karna a Kuru when listening ears are about.”
I have SO MANY FEELINGS about the ways in which Karna fits into Lakshmana’s family, because he’s the protector who failed her (but so did her father) and he’s almost her father (but he’s not) and he’s one of her favourite uncles (but he’s low-caste) and how all of that is secondary to her determination to uphold his reputation even if she has to lie about it, and to not give way to the posthumous Pandava claiming of Karna.
Lakshmana laughs a brief peal of merriment that mingles better with the general gaiety than her wonted solemnity. “But he was not the best of the Padavas; that we know only too well. I am enough a Kaurava woman to lie if I must, to honour a man my father loved as he did my mother.”
“And you, Princess?”
“When I think of arms around me, I see only my husband; how fortunate, Uncle, that it is a true answer as well as the dutiful one.”
“Lakshmana.”
We’re all in agreement that Samba’s a nightmare, right? Cause Samba’s a nightmare.
“I do not care to be in further danger, in the home of the Yadavas, with my husband who…” Fifteen days she’s been in her home again and this is the first Yuyutsu sees Lakshmana break, lose her composure; perhaps she has wept in her mother’s arms or in Dushala’s. “If he were such a one as his father, I could have forged happiness with my husband; with such as he is, I seek only safety.”
“You know of your mother’s hopes,” he essays when she has turned again to look at Parikshita babbling joyfully on.
Lakshmana has been married for eight years and each of those years has been hell, because she can also see how good the other Yadava wives have it, by and large.
“I know my husband, and I know the love his father bears him, and the love my uncles bear my father-in-law. I know what such love does to the hopes of women. Do not speak to me of hopes, Uncle, let me have what I can of peace.”
This is just supposed to be cute; there are references to other stories in it but mostly it’s a nice moment of Pandava-Yadava amity while the Kauravas are fucked up. So there’s Arjuna/Subhadra/Draupadi clustered together; Bhima and Nakula offering characteristic favours; Satyajit unaware of the tulabharam episode as a Yadava in-joke.
On the day after Parikshit’s coronation as Crown Prince of Hastinapuri and Indraprastha, Yudhisthira grants boons to those who seek them, in his great-nephew’s name. Parikshit himself sits on his grandmother’s lap, Panchali and Partha flanking him and distracting him with sweets. The boons asked are of a nature to rouse waves of laughter, and make the little prince dance in Princess Subhadra’s gentle grip, delighted to be at the centre of so much attention. Bhima asks for permission to cook a feast in Parikshit’s name, Nakula to give milch cows to villagers in need, Princess Prabhavati to dedicate a temple to Lord Indra, long neglected among the Yadavas, and Prince Bhanu a school for worthy young men of the merchant castes. Even formidable Satyajit, King of Panchal with his score of dead brothers and nephews, asks to donate Parikshit’s weight in gold to the consecration of Khandavaprastha as sacred ground, a request that sends a howl of laughter rising from among the Yadavas, aimed perplexingly at Princess Satyabhama.
I love Bhanumati, just in case you couldn’t tell. I also love how Yuyutsu and Dushala, who started the story hostile and still don’t precisely like each other, click close in that ride-or-die sibling way.
Into the dying echoes of laughter steps Princess Bhanumati, robed austerely in white and bedecked with pearls, like a wave of the Ganga crashing ashore. In her wake comes Dushala, like a raft towed by a swan-ship, and takes Yuyutsu’s proffered hand, the seat empty next to his. Now they are three, when Yuyutsu had thought to be the only Kaurava at court, their father unwilling and Lakshmana absent and the other Princesses uninterested. Even Bhanumati has come to court only once before since he’s returned, and that to coax her daughter into speech.
“You should have told me,” he murmurs to Dushala, as Prince Balabhadra pledges to teach Parikshit as he taught his father and great-uncle, and then glances askance at the widow of his most famous pupil.
“We only found out this morning ourselves,” Dushala whispers back, “but it is true enough. Have you seen Vrishaketu?”
Yuyutsu gestures to Partha, leaning forward to chuck his grandson under the chin and then back to clasp the hand of his nephew, still smiling. “There is an awful symmetry to it.”
He’s theirs, and while Yuyutsu adores Yudhishtira and Dushala is trying to reconcile herself to the new shape of her life, they’re not entirely happy about Karna’s last son with the Pandavas. Vrishali definitely absolutely hates it.
Dushala sighs. “He’ll be safe enough, whatever happens now. His mother was worrying.”
Bhanumati is just. really good at this sort of theatre.
Balabhadra takes his seat; Bhanumati steps out in front of the throne, and sinks to her knees in front of it, her hands clasped and head lowered, a suspicion of tears on her face. Panchali turns in her seat to dart a speaking glance at Sahadeva, and is answered with a minute shake of the head.
“I have a boon to ask of you, Majesty, but a boon in truth, and no favour in disguise. My time for granting favours has fled, and now I may only ask.”
“Ask,” Yudhisthira says, “and we will judge how it is to be granted.”
This is a very... measured show of both deference and vulnerability? idk.
“I would have you intercede with your Yadava kin, Majesty.”
“The Yadavas are before your eyes,” Balabhadra calls. “What need have you of intercession, if you crave of us a boon that is just?”
“My lord is gracious,” Bhanumati says, and bows again.
They know the crap Lakshmana goes through, IJS.
“If it is to do with Lakshmana,” Pradyumna essays, “we think of her as a sister.”
Prince Bhanu nods assent, and Princess Satyabhama adds, “She has been a daughter to me these eight years; I must know what worries her mother.”
“It is a balm to my heart that my daughter has found other mothers, and siblings, especially now that her own are dead, yet I fear in speaking out I might deprive her of such shelter as she has, and remain unable to provide her with any other.”
Sahadeva KNOWS. Sahadeva knows everything, because he cannibalised his father at approx ten years old.
“Speak,” Sahadeva says, “and let not your courage fail you.”
“It touches upon the honour of my lord Krishna,” Bhanumati answers, “is it strange that fear grips my heart?”
Running joke of everyone insulting Krishna, including his family because that will never stop being hilarious to me.
His wives laugh, and Princess Rukmini says, “I promise you we have heard every possible insult to his high honour. Do not keep us waiting.”
“The day before Prince Parikshit’s coronation, Princess Prabhavati received a letter from Dwaraka, and shared its contents with my daughter, who has since taken to her bed, turning a deaf ear to any attempts to rouse her. I have heard since that you will soon return to Dwaraka and would beg the favour of keeping Lakshmana with me while she grieves.”
I... don’t know what I think about Jambavati, actually? I hate doing the bad son = bad mother thing, and I consciously stayed away from that here, but certainly of Krishna’s three Mahabharata wives, Satyabhama likes Lakshmana most and Jambavati least.
“What does your daughter grieve, that she must heal here among the Kurus?” Princess Jambavati leans forward in her seat, her face a grim mask. “We have given her time enough to grieve her father.”
“Who can know how long grief lives in the heart? My mother died a dozen years ago and still on dewy mornings I hear her voice in birdsong and I weep,” Bhanumati parries. “But Lakshmana grieves not the loss of her father’s life, but her husband’s love.”
Pradyumna also knows, but that’s because his wife got the letter and then woke him up at the crack of dawn to figure out how to deal with this.
It is possible to see when Prince Pradyumna pales, how closely he resembles his mother, their faces set together as they whisper.
So. uh. A lot of people abduct princesses (or get abducted by them) canonically. (Satyaki’s ancestor abducts Devaki for Vasudeva, e.g.) So Samba’s abduction of Lakshmana isn’t entirely beyond the pale, especially since Balarama endorsed it, but it’s not something the rest of them approve of, Satyaki least of all. Samba is Krishna’s dark mirror.
“He once did great deeds to gain her,” Satyaki drawls, “has he now forsaken her, when she needs him most?”
This is canonical-ish, btw. Samba’s a nightmare.
“That his heart strays to another while she is grief-struck is loss any woman may have to bear, and if it was only that I would not beg to keep her with me. The women of the Yadavas are as brave as they are beautiful, and my daughter, however lovely she may have been when Prince Samba’s eyes first rested on her, cannot compare, as no mortal woman may with an apsara. But that he trifles with one of Lord Krishna’s wives causes her grief from which I cannot shake her in so little time, nor can I hope for her health if in Dwaraka, when the very news of his love has so shaken her.”
Yup, the queen is a predator, it’s fabulous.
Jambavati growls, a low noise that travels spines and climbs blood. “Have you any proof of this?”
“Only what Princess Prabhavati told Lakshmana and Lakshmana told me; for truth you must ask the princess. I beg you, let me keep my daughter with me, that she might heal from her grief among those whose greatest care is for her.”
A lot of the story is to do with dealing with being middle-aged and growing into your parents without necessarily either repeating their mistakes or slipping back into the routines of your youth. idk if that came through? But this is one of those moments of mis/recognition for Yuyutsu.
She stays on her knees with hands folded together and eyes lowered, as Pradyumna and Prabhavati murmur confirmation to Princess Rukmini, the picture of serene determination. Here is one, Yuyutsu thinks of a sudden, who is a pupil, not of Shakuni but of Queen Gandhari, and makes of unflinching truth her greatest weapon.
This is the second sentence I wrote for this story. It was always going to be about surviving war and how contingent the fate of women is on the whims of their menfolk. The work was in trying to get them from the opening sentence to this.
The whispers thronging the hall stifle and still, and Dushala’s grip on his hand grows painful, and finally Krishna rises, and raises Bhanumati to her feet, and puts his lotus-pink palm on her forehead, and says, “Tathastu.”

Fidelity is not something Draupadi demands of her husbands, or they of her; and so the Queen’s flirtations with her new cook is at first only a cause for amusement. But she notices, after some time, how Vallabh cringes at her summons, how he flushes with embarrassment rather than pleasure at her advances. 
A sairandhari has precious little power in the Queen’s court, but that is no reason to leave her husband undefended. 
“Leave her to me, my dearest,” Malini murmurs, “and worry no more.”
the best gift one gave the other
Even before the akshaya-patra, Draupadi saved the last of the kitchens’ offerings for Bhima; there are times, after all, when it is imprudent to show the extent of his appetite before Indraprastha’s guests. But when Bhima paces at night, starving and ashamed of himself, Draupadi comes to him, food in her hands, and stays until he is sated.

For Draupadi: Bhima mourning, with great gulping sobs, the death of his son–and her own inability to honestly regret any of it.

This is a submit to BoruSara Fanfiction Week for Day 4's prompt : disobedience.

Destiny has a strange habit of disobeying your wishes.
If Sarada could have torn her hair off - or better, thrown the wedding garland on his face rather than around his neck - she would have. At least it would wipe off the smug smirk on his face.
She could have avoided this situation entirely. Really. But no, she had to tempt fate.
She should have really listened to her naga grandparents when they told her to do tapasya to their lord - Lord Vishnu - to whom her ancestor Adishesha - the kings of the nagas - is one of his two vahanas. But she had to remember the entire Skanda episode and the fiasco with his two wives (and the latter's reincarnations) and deny their suggestion. Her uncle Itachi pointed out that she can devote the tapasya to Lord Shiva. The man was easier to please and more lackadaisical with his boons. Then she pointed out why and how Draupadi landed up in a polyandrous marriage which in turn led to the war at Kurukshetra.
Yeah.
Once tapasya was out of the way, how would King Fugaku - the current ruler of Nagaloka - marry off his immensely precious and beloved only grandchild? How would he find a man of merit, virtue and valour? His Sarada had demanded that the final choice of her husband should remain with her. It wasn't an extravagant demand. His granddaughter was highly educated in philosophy and scriptures, trained in warfare, delightful to sight and priceless to behold. Surely there must be someone out there, one who can be at her side unconditionally.
The only solution landed up being, with Sarada's approval, a swayamavara. Dozens of invitations to eligible bachelors were sent out. Princes, kings, warriors, sages and scholars of each and every realm and race were invited.
“Why did grandfather have to invite him?” Sarada muttered sullenly.
“Well, he is the prince of the garudas. It would have looked incredibly rude if your grandfather didn't.” Chocho answered back, her voluptuous figure, so typical of a yakshi, moved gracefully through the heap of fabric and ornaments which were to be a part of Sarada's bridal trousseau.
Sarada closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose, willing herself to forget the man in question. She and Boruto grew up together since infancy. Their fathers were the ones who managed to bury the long standing rivalry between their races - the nagas and the garudas. Their mothers, his an apsara and hers a human who was a rishika, were also close. Somewhere, when and how she didn't remember, she and him became fierce rivals.
She rarely wanted to acknowledge back in their gurukula days under Guru Shino that she was mesmerised by his brilliantly blue eyes, found his golden plumage in his bird form and hair in his human form beautiful and his wit and charm disarming. She balmed her throbbing heart with denial. Of course, his grin was so annoying. But by the time their education ended a few months ago and she finally buckled up courage to confess what was in her heart, she heard that Sumire was already doing tapasya to gain the husband she desired. It had been no secret that the beautiful mermaid had been smitten with the young garuda since long. So with a heavy heart, she turned her back on her intentions and requested to be married off as soon as possible.
It wasn't easy. The conditions she had laid down for her swayamavara were not acceptable to many. She had demanded unquestionable fidelity on part of her husband along with their willingness to become her consort as well instead of just the other way around. A mighty proposition for many who expect polygyny to be the norm and had expected the throne of Nagaloka to be passed onto a distant male cousin of hers.
So, many long-winded, polite and bush-beating refusals arrived at her grandfather's court. The pain was dulled somewhat when she realised among the few acceptances of her conditions was one from Queen Kushina, the queen of garudas.
“Chillax. You should be happy that he didn't accept the invitation like Inojin or Shikadai or Metal or Mitsuki.”
Sarada smiled. She had sent an addition of a choice of rakhi to those men whom she held close to her heart. It heartened her to learn that they all had accepted the rakhi along with the invitation and swore to be at her side as her “brothers” through everything.
She can't help but overthink about how Boruto’s letter didn't mention anything about accepting her rakhi and instead sent her a set of the most beautiful anklets she had ever laid her eyes on. Rubies - the same stone as her nagamani - shone brightly alongside sapphires, emeralds and diamonds on solid gold. The design was exquisite and the craftsmanship impeccable and intricate.
She couldn't explain why but she had worn them to her swayamavara. She shouldn't have, ethically speaking. She wasn't going to interfere with Sumire's desire to marry Boruto, especially when Boruto had never given her any indication that he saw her as anything more than the oldest friend he had.
But here she was, decked in gorgeous bridal red and heavy temple gold, waiting for the tournament to end, in her chambers in the royal palace in netherworld. She glanced back at the large full-bodied mirror, standing proudly in a corner. It was crafted by Lord Vishwakarma, allowing passageway to the ones who will be able to complete each and everyone of the tasks set by her grandfather. They were not easy and she really doubted whether anyone could actually be declared a victor.
“Princess!” A servant called out to her, pointing towards the mirror. Her heart skipped a beat. She could see a faint glow from the mirror. There must be a victor. And now, she could set up a final test. If this person could see through her illusionary powers, she might consider marrying him. Whether to actually marry him or not depended on her. If he didn't, well, she could have a hearty laugh about it later on.
The mirror shone blindingly brightly, as though the sun itself had descended in the chamber. She shut her eyes tightly. There's no way she could see anything. A pause followed followed by an outburst of giggles from her handmaidens.
“Oh my! Sarada, you are going to get some sexy times tonight!” Her face burnt up red. She could hear the giggles of her entourage as they left the chambers. She could smell a familiar scent of Himalayan pinewood and fresh earth she could recognise anywhere in the world.
Her heartbeat sped up. No way. There's no way this is real.
She wanted to open her eyes but she couldn't immediately after being caught by such a strong flash of light. Nagas had excellent sight and smell but sensitive eyes. Casting illusion required immense amount of magical power and that also affected her speed of recovery. She could hear the man approach the balcony where she was waiting with the wedding garland in her hands.
He should not be able to see her. Her illusions were immensely powerful and his weakness had always been seeing through it.
“You know, I should have just jumped in through the balcony. The journey through the mirror was terrible. I feel a bit squeamish. I think you should move out of the way in case I end up puking.”
Sarada's eyes flew open. A blurry mop of golden hair slowly refocused itself back into the face of her oldest friend.
“You can see me?!” She sputtered. Until and unless the moron was just taking a lucky guess, she would rather die of humiliation at her illusion being seen through by the idiot.
“Duh.”
“How’s that possible?” Boruto nodded towards her feet, ignoring her incredulity.
The anklets.
Boruto smirked, rapidly closing in the distance between the two of them. “Our Lord was the one who gave me the gold which was used to make those. He said that they were “pure” and had anti-illusionary powers. Came in handy since I knew you would be setting up illusions.”
Sarada stared at him. This guy. This brat. This imbecile. Not only did he have an upper hand even before the swayamavara began, he was now giving her that absolutely annoying grin. How could she forget that his ancestor - Garudadeva - was the other of Lord Vishnu's two vahanas? And that he had always been teasing the two of them together.
“So?” Boruto raised a brow.
“So what?” Sarada glared at him viciously.
“Aren't you going to put that garland on me?”
“Whatever made you think that I am going to marry you?!”
Boruto waggled his eyebrows towards her ankles. Sarada flushed even more.
“I have a right to refuse you.”
“Hey!”
“Hey yourself. What about Sumire?”
“What about her?” Boruto blinked in confusion.
“She is doing tapasya to have you as her husband.”
“Ah that, I don't want her. I never saw her as more than a friend. And...she is not doing that tapasya anymore. It's a, um, well, it's a long story.”
“....”
“Listen, I know that-”
The chamber doors banged open. At least half of their families flooded in. Chattering, giggles and congratulations flooded the air while Boruto and Sarada looked on in bemusement. Sakura hugged Sarada tightly while Hinata nearly choked Boruto out of joy. Their parents, grandparents, his sister, everyone was there.
“Big Brother, why don't you have the garland around your neck?” Himawari was the first to notice that Boruto and Sarada are yet to choose each other as their significant other.
Sarada stiffened visibly. Boruto recovered from his previous bemusement immediately.
"You see, Sarada was just curious about how I actually saw through her illusion. And she was so curious that she forgot that we are having a swayamavara out here. Even about the garland. But that's a good thing too. Now that everyone is here, why not do it in front of everyone. Nice idea, right Sarada?” Smugness oozed out of his grin. Sarada gritted her teeth and viciously pushed the other garland she was carrying into his hands.
“Hey!”
Sarada looked up to find gentleness in those brilliantly blue eyes. Sigh. She's hopeless.

The weight of a garland pressed around her neck. Boruto had chosen her as bride. Smirk melted off into a smile before blooming into a grin. Blush spread across her cheeks and she practically threw the garland around his neck, accepting him as her groom.

On Samyukt Kisan Morcha's call last night, asking for protests from 10am to 1pm today all over the country to press for four key demands, protests have been organised at DC/DM offices and other locations in many places. Reports have come in from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal and other states about these protests. There was also a silent protest march organised at Singhu Border also. Citizens who participated in these protests questioned the impunity and violence with which BJP leaders are operating, and their anti-farmer attitude and behaviour. They demanded immediate dismissal of the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, immediate arrest of the Minister's son and his accomplices, a probe by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, and also the resignation of Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar. Reports indicate that FIRs have been lodged against Ashish Mishra Teni and 15 others. However, no arrests have been made. SKM has appealed to all citizens to maintain peace and non-violence, as is the norm of the farmers' struggle, and asked protestors not to fall into the trap being laid by BJP to derail the movement by violence and communal politics being brought in.
There were spontaneous protests in response to the unfortunate developments in Lakhimpur Kheri from last night itself when candlelight marches and rallies were taken out in some locations like Ambala, Kurukshetra, Chandigarh and other places. In Puranpur and other locations, highways were jammed by protesting farmers. Thousands of farmers poured into Tikunia today, at the site of the violent incidents, where the bodies of the martyrs were kept, and negotiations held with the administration.
Today, an agreement was reached between SKM leaders along with local protesting farmers and families of the deceased, and the state administration, which paved the way for the final rites to be performed of the martyred farmers, after postmortem is performed. The bodies of the four farmers had been kept in an overnight vigil by hundreds of farmers and their families in Tikunia's college ground. The Government will give 45 lakh rupees each and a government job each to the families of the farmers who were killed yesterday. The injured will be given 10 lakh rupees each. FIR has been registered against Ashish Mishra Teni and 15 others under Sections 302, 120B and other charges, and the government said that it will arrest all the accused within a week. A case has been registered against Minister Ajay Mishra Teni also, under Sections like 120B. The Government has also agreed to get a retired High Court judge to probe the matter. The demand with regard to Ajay Mishra Teni's dismissal from the Union Government is pending, of course.
Eye witness accounts reveal how the murderous attack seems to be pre-planned, facilitated by the UP police. It is reported that Police removed barricades to allow the vehicles of the Minister's son, who himself was driving the Thar vehicle, to mow down protestors indiscriminately, and the farmers retaliated thereafter. The Police protected Ashish Mishra Teni in escaping from the scene, and it is reported that he fired as he escaped. The specific targeting of SKM leader Tajinder Singh Virk was narrated in eye witness accounts.
Reports through the day indicated that the Uttar Pradesh government tried numerous undemocratic ways of preventing various people going to Lakhimpur Kheri, whether it was social activists, or political leaders. Sec.144 was imposed, and internet services were suspended. UP Government went to the extent of disallowing certain people from arriving into, and leaving from particular airports, and had also written to Punjab government, asking that no person from Punjab should be allowed to enter Lakhimpur Kheri. At the time of release of this press note, reports indicate SKM leaders like Gurnam Singh Chaduni and Buta Singh Burjgill were being prevented from reaching Lakhimpur Kheri by the UP Police. In fact, it is reported that Gurnam Singh Chaduni has been arrested in Meerut. The prevention of leaders of the Opposition, including the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and two sitting Chief Ministers (of Punjab and Chattisgarh), and disallowing the landing of a Deputy Chief Minister clearly shows that the UP Government has something to hide, and is protecting the culprits. Such draconian measures are unprecedented and raise numerous valid questions. SKM condemns all these undemocratic measures of Uttar Pradesh BJP government.
Samyukt Kisan Morcha clarifies once again that it has never approached the Supreme Court or any other Court for resolution of the core issues of the farmers' agitation - about the 3 anti-farmer central laws or MSP statutory guarantee. SKM has always believed that the three central laws which reflect the anti-farmer policy directions adopted by the Union Government have to be repealed by the government itself. Towards this, SKM has also written to the President and the Prime Minister asking for dialogue to be resumed and demands to be fulfilled. SKM did not approach the Court even on the constitutionality matter - while it is important that state government's constitutional authority over agriculture has to be restored and strengthened, it is equally important to realise that the issues with the farm laws are not just about constitutionality, or lack thereof. It is about the implications of the farm laws on farmers and the death blow to their fragile livelihoods. While the laws might have been suspended from implementation for now, SKM realises that the Stay can be lifted any day. Therefore, the movement has insisted on a full repeal of the laws. When it came to organising a Kisan Sansad at Jantar Mantar too, SKM did not have to knock on the doors of any court, and fulfilled fully the conditions with which it obtained Delhi Police's permission and cooperation for organising the same. Therefore, there is no question of the farmers' movement entering the Courts and seeking justice, and protesting at the same time. The petitioner in this case has got nothing to do with SKM. On the matter of blocking the highways, it is reported that the Supreme Court has issued notice to 43 leaders. Samyukt Kisan Morcha has always maintained that farmers did not put up any barricades or blockades on the roads. It was the Haryana, UP and Delhi Police which did so. Farmers have in fact kept the roads clear for traffic on both sides at the morcha sites. Public inconvenience if any is being caused by the police which has barricaded the highways. Farmers have also maintained that the agitation can be resolved, if the Union Government does not behave in this egoistic, adamant and unjustifiable manner. The resolution is clearly in the hands of the Modi Government which has not been able to give any convincing evidence as to why it will not repeal the anti-farmer laws, or why it will not enact a legislation for guaranteeing remunerative MSP for all produce and farmers.
Reports indicate that Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi criticised opposition political parties sharply in an interview, alleging that the opposition parties are indulging in political deceit and moral dishonesty when they oppose the farm laws. He has reportedly said that parties who promised certain reforms in their election promises and even their manifestos, have taken a u-turn later on and did not have the boldness to carry through their promises. Samyukt Kisan Morcha would like to remind the Prime Minister that these so-called "reforms" are not beneficial for farmers, irrespective of which party is proposing these. These "reforms" are meant to facilitate the business of agri-corporations at the expenses of millions of farmers in the country. Farmers did not ask for such reforms. Moreover, SKM would like to remind Mr Modi and BJP that what the farmers are demanding today is very much in line with promises made by the BJP itself, and perspectives supported by Mr Modi and BJP in the past. It was in 2011 when Mr Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat and as the Chairperson of a Working Group that he recommended that MSP enforcement should be mandated through statutory provisions, in the "Report of the Working Group on Consumer Affairs" of the Government of India. Further, earlier to this, it was in 2002 that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government obtained a report of its "High Level Committee on Long Term Grain Policy" that recommended that CACP should go strictly on the basis of C2 cost of production. The Committee also recommended that MSP should have statutory status. This Committee was asked to set out principles and guidelines for long term grain policy by the then BJP government. It is also well known that Mr Narendra Modi and BJP canvassed for the party's election campaign in 2014 on the MSP plank, promising improvements for farmers. In 2018, the Modi government in fact made a commitment on the floor of the Parliament that MSP will be made a reality for all farmers. None of this materialised. It is high time that BJP looked into its own political dishonesty in making direct promises to farmers and reneging on them. More importantly, it is important that farmers demands be met in the current agitation, since the implications of not doing so are a matter of life and death of millions of anna daatas of the country.
The Champaran-Varanasi Lokneeti Satyagraha Padayatra that started in Champaran on Gandhi Jayanti, is on its third day of journey. After spending the night at Kotwa last night, the yatra will reach Rampur Khajuriya tonight, after passing through Belwa. The yatra is receiving a very positive response throughout its route with locals extending their support and hospitality.

Janmastami  celebrates the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna. I take this opportunity to wish all our learners a Happy Janmastami.
At Future Learner K12  we are all about story writing  and character  creation. Personally I find the character of Krishna and his story to be absolutely fascinating. He is a fantastic creation by the sage Vedavyas  the writer of the great Indian epic Mahabharata.
Krishna is worshipped by different names in different  parts of India. He is known as Kanhaiyya in Mathura, Jagannath in Odisha, Gopal or Gobindo in West Bengal,  Vithoba in Maharashtra, Srinath in Rajasthan, Dwarakadheesh in Gujarat, Krishna in Karnataka & Guruvayurappan in Kerala to name a few.
As we deep dive into his story we will see how Krishna overcame impossible odds to achieve his goals.  He was born 5252 years  ago in Mathura during Shravan (July) at midnight. His lived for about  125 years. There was not a single moment when he was at peace throughout his life. At every turn, he faced  challenges. Where he stands out is that he went about his life  with a sense of responsibility and remained unattached to the fruits of his actions. If there is one lesson  that we should take away from his life it is that one.
Life had been unfair to Krishna from the very beginning. His mother Devaki  was a princess  from the Ugra clan and his father Vadudeva hailed from the Yadava clan. His parents had an  inter-racial marriage. This led  to the imprisonment of his biological parents  by his maternal uncle Kansa who wanted to make sure that no child born  of this “impure marriage” ever staked a claim to the throne of Mathura.  Krishna was the eighth child of his parents. Earlier Kansa had killed seven of his siblings over the years. On the stormy night Krishna was born  the prison gates had been miraculously left unlocked! Vasudeva took him across the Yamuna River to Gokul on the opposite bank and left him in the house of his adopted parents Nanda and Yashoda who were cowherds.
He was born dark skinned. So the villagers  of Gokul started calling him Kanha or Krishna the black one. For the first 9 years of his life he was ridiculed for being dark and short. He was labeled a thief and  often framed  for stealing butter and curd.
Besides these everyday irritants his childhood was frought with many life threatening situations. Murdering wet-nurse, torrential rains and flooding, poisonous snakes to name a few. Finally when drought kicked in his family was forced to migrate from Gokul to Vrindavan.
It was during his stay at Vrindavan that he killed his uncle and released  his biological parents from prison .
Krishna was  just 11 years old when he  left  Vrindavan and moved  to Dwaraka. For the next  few years he consolidated his rule in there.
However he was soon caught up in the politics of the day and defeated  the mighty Jarasandha with the help of Vainatheya Tribe. This victory established him as a center of power.
He turned his attention to his cousins the Pandavas next. He saved them from death by arson, played a significant role in their marriage to Draupadi, saved Draupadi from embarrassment at the royal court, established  the kingdom of Indraprastha for them, stood by the Pandavas during their exile and made them win the Kurushetra war. Krishna was 89 years old the Kurukshetra happened.
He lived for 36 years after the Kurukshetra war. During this time he faced more loss. His cherished city, Dwaraka got washed away. He lost all his kin. He had the ability to see both  the past and future, yet he always chose to  live in the present.
He was killed by a hunter named Jara when he was napping in the nearby forest. Krishna is a character who lived life in the service of others. I hope all our writers and their families are inspired by this timeless creation.

Prof. Ranbir Singh receives Living Legends Award
Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh received ‘Living Legends Award’, on the occasion of Lawyers’ Day at the Bar Association of India. He was awarded this prestigious honor by Honorable Justice Madan B. Lokur (Judge, Supreme Court of India).
Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh is the founder Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Delhi established by the Delhi Government in 2008. With over two decades of experience in heading the law school he carries the aura of a visionary who as an outstanding statesmen and academician shown immense commitment and contribution towards changing the legal education landscape of the country. Prior to his stint in NLU, Delhi, he was the Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR, University of Law, and had been at its helm since its inception in 1998.
This has not been the first time that his work has received recognition. Prof. Singh has been the recipient of many awards in recognition of his accomplishments, both, as an administrator and teacher / researcher and some of them are:
Symbiosis-IALS (International Association of Law Schools, USA) Lifetime Achievement Award: For excellence in legal and justice education during the 2017 Global Law Dean’s Forum.
Life Time Achievement Award: In recognition of the exemplary contribution towards Legal Education by Dr. N. M. Veeraiyan, Chancellor, Saveetha University.
Karmayogi Samman: Haryana Institute of Fine Arts, by Shri Kuldeep Sharma, Speaker, Haryana Legislative Assembly.
“Professor N.R. Madhava Menon Best Law Teacher Award 2011”  by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Altamas Kabir, Judge, Supreme Court of India.
Lex Witness recognized him in the “Hall of fame: Top 50”, as an individual who have helped shape the legal landscape of modern India.
“Alumnus of Distinction” at the Golden Jubilee Commemorative Special Convocation of Kurukshetra University, 2007, by His Excellency, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India.

Even a Bollywood blockbuster hit, lsquo;3 Idiotsrsquo; also depicted the plight of Indian engineers who tackle college and family pressure simultaneously. For those who are feeling bad about themselves for not being able to ace their exams, here is a case in point, this student might give you a respite from your engineering blues. If reports are to be believed, the Punjab and Haryana High Court have asked a National Institute of Technology (NIT) Kurukshetra engineering student to stop pursuing his engineering course which he apparently started nine years ago. The concerned student, belongs to the B.Tech batch of 2009 had filed a petition in front of the court seeking mercy for not having cleared exams and has 17 compartments left to his name, as reported in the Hindi daily, Amar Ujala. The studentrsquo;s record of 17 compartments, left the court stupefied. And in response to his mercy request, the court responded by saying, ldquo;Please have mercy on this court and do not apply for an appeal and have mercy on this country and do not become an engineer.rdquo; Apparently, after being enrolled in a B.Tech course for four years, the student was given another four years to clear his compartments. When the petitioner was presented in front of Chief Justice Krishna Murari, the judge apprehended the student saying that he had wasted valuable time of the court and pointed out that how much money had been spent on that particular seat held by the engineering student. Also, the court further added when the student wasnrsquo;t able to complete his engineering in nine years how will he clear 17 compartments in one go. At the end, the Court advised the student to take up any other profession be it law but not to pursue engineering any further. nbsp;
