Why I stopped going to church – Falz
Weeks after announcing the 2nd edition of his music concert, The Falz Experience, Folarin Falana a.k.a. Falz has revealed why he stopped planning to church. Within an interview with the multi-talented Nigerian artiste, he explained he values spirituality over religion adding that that doesn’t make him less of a Christian.
“I have nothing against the church or going to church. Everyone has the right to practice the religion they desire. It has been a while that I have been to church. It does not make me less of a Christian. “The reason is that I went to a few churches and, during sermons, I was put under undue pressure. There was a time that a pastor called me to the altar just to acknowledge my presence for being in church.
“In my mind, I felt that the service was not about me. I felt that everybody was there to worship God, yet they were putting undue pressure on me. “The pastor gave me the microphone to address the congregation and I was puzzled; what did he expect me to say to the congregation?” Falz said. Commenting on the criticisms that greeted the release of his song titled “This is Nigeria”, Falz said: “My songs are always going to be heard.
The world is a lot smaller now; it only takes one post and it’s everywhere regardless of the attempts by powers that be to try to stop stuff here and there. “If you’re making this kind of music, you have to always be ready for the worst. Of course, ‘This is Nigeria’ was banned. We’re still in court. But I have my fundamental rights so you can’t really stop that regardless of what body you are.”
Speaking on his concert holding today (June 8) at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, Falz said the Falz Experience is a one of a kind musical theatre event that showcases the unique sides of Falz the Bahd Guy, saying “but this time with a twist.” After setting the bar so high in 2017, the award-winning musician has also announced that he has a special surprise for the concert goers today. Falz however assured that the event would start at exactly 8pm.

Falz Reveals Why He Suddenly Went Vulgar In His New Song
Falz Reveals Why He Suddenly Went Vulgar In His New Song Rapper-cum-actor, Folarin Falana a.k.a Falz the Bahd Guy recently had a listening party for his fourth studio album, Moral Instruction, which was released on January 15, 2019. The event attracted the high and mighty in the entertainment industry including Sound Sultan, Adekunle Gold, Mr. Eazi, DJ Lambo, and Big Brother Naija stars like Tobi Bakre, Bassey, Kemen, Ifu Ennada, and many others. Fielding questions from select journalists, the son of human rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana, opens up on the motive behind the album and other issues. Enjoy it. What inspired the new album, Moral Instruction? ‘Moral Instruction’ is more than an album, it’s a movement, a re-education, learning and unlearning to re-orientate the mentality of young people, most especially the youths. Now is the time more than ever that we need to wake up, now is a very vital time, in terms of the political climate, in terms of how bad things have gotten and that’s why I decided I am going to go for it and speak my mind. I know that a lot of artistes shy away from making content like this, understandably so, I mean you don’t want to offend somebody that may give you some notes, dollars, something light for your pocket, but I decided that if we have to move forward and change the mentality, we need to be bold, we need to be brave. Who are those that worked with you on the album? The entire album is a very serious record. This album also contains vocal samples from the legendary Fela Kuti. It consists of nine tracks, which include ‘Johnny’, ‘Follow Follow’ produced by Sess, ‘Hypocrite’ featuring Demmie Vee, ‘Talk’ (hit single), ‘Amen’, ‘Brothers Keeper’ featuring Sess and ‘Paper’ featuring Chillz. The song, ‘Johnny’ talks about inhuman attitude towards the numerous deaths, the insecurity that has befallen us. That’s why on the song, you hear lyrics like Johnny drop for Borno, Plateau, some dey fight for maalu, Johnny drop for Lagos, foolish man overdo, if Johnny continues to drop, eyan melo lo ma ku. Basically people are dying everyday. It’s almost as though we have become numb. Someone died in Borno and we are here in Lagos, we are not really reacting because the violence has not gotten here yet. I mean what happens to our humanity, these are Nigerians as well, human beings and this continues every single day. From the beginning of the song till the end is like the story of the youth corper that was shot in Abuja by a police officer; and as usual the term is accidental discharge. This is ridiculous; this sort of thing should not be tolerated. Why did you use the ‘f’ word in the album? In my entire career, since I have been making music since 2009 till date, I have never used the word ‘f–k’ or ‘motherf–ker’. Everyone makes art in their own manner, but on this album, I said it three times because I was angry. It took me a very long time; when I listened to the concept, I said ‘this thing cannot be changed because that is the only way we can portray that anger’. I have clean versions for every single song, there is a radio version that’s very important, but that raw version where the real emotion is being portrayed, you can’t tamper with that. Tell us about Follow Follow? Follow Follow is all about the mentality that has befallen us in this day and age. We are not a conscious people; we sort of take pride in moving with the trend. There is a social media craze now that has taken the mentality and psyche of people. You will be very surprised at how much a happy birthday post means to people on Instagram. When they check, they send you a few options and if you don’t post, it’s beef. We need to have a mind of our own, regardless of what others are doing. You need to be yourself. At the end of the day, it’s very important that we have our own identity, what we stand for and we can never bulge. That’s what this song is all about. What of Hypocrite? Hypocrite talks about the fact that, you know that the next man is hungry, so many starving, but you just think of your own pocket. When the time for election comes, he is just after making promises to do this and that, but at the end of the day, he will go there and make sure his family is okay for the next couple of years. What about you the voters? You are still going to vote for either this person or that person, but you know that others are running, but no, you will still go there and vote for umbrella or broom. You know the people that are running, it’s because of you they cannot win; hypocrisy is in you then. At the end of the day, it makes me angry. It’s just really frustrating. We speak about human rights; at the end of the day, there is a law in Nigeria about homosexuality. It’s quite ridiculous. Come on, in 2019? I cannot say to you that I am a homosexual, but I don’t need to be a homosexual to know every single person, to whatever sexual orientation that they want. Even in our laws, we discriminate against this same people, it’s quite ridiculous. On Amen and Brothers Keeper The track, Amen speaks about religious scam, which is a very serious matter. It’s about men of God living lavishly at the expense of their church members. They take our offerings to set up universities and schools, which church members cannot afford. What really matters is being spiritual and doing the right thing. Brothers Keeper speaks about the selfish mentality, which we Nigerians have built over time. What everybody is thinking about is himself and their family. Nigeria has the highest rate of poor people in the world, even India that has double the size of our population, is not that poor. As regards the 2019 elections, we should not lose our sense because of money. *** Source: Sun News Read the full article

In a swift turn of events barely 7 days after the threat of a legal action, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) have now backed down on their ultimatum.
The Muslim Rights Concern, (MURIC) have dropped its move to proceed with a lawsuit against rapper, Falz for his video, 'This is Nigeria'.
On June 5, MURIC issued a seven-day ultimatum to Falz, ordering him to take down his music video titled “This is Nigeria” and tender an apology or face legal action.
The ultimatum immediately generated a lot of reactions and criticisms from Nigerians who condemned the group.
In a fresh statement signed by the its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, and made available on Monday, June 11, the group has now backed down on the threat and would instead report Falz to the appropriate agencies.
The statement by MURIC reads thus in part; “In view of the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians, counselling from several quarters and commitments given by us to those who interfaced with us on this matter, an emergency meeting of MURIC’s Think-Tank was convened on Sunday, June 10, 2018 to review the situation and resolved to drag the artist to government agencies saddled with the responsibility of censoring films and videos.
It is not a U-turn but a sudden change in tactics’.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) last week resolved to sue Folarin Falana (Falz the Bahd Guy), a Nigerian artist, who produced the video song titled ‘This is Nigeria’ in which a Fulani man was seen beheading somebody.
The video also featured hijab-wearing female choreographers dancing the ‘shaku-shaku’ (a dance associated with drug). A seven-day ultimatum was given for the withdrawal of the video and an apology failing which a legal tussle would be launched.
Our office has since been inundated with solidarity visits, while our telephone lines have been flooded with a deluge of calls from members, friends, well-wishers, journalists and other concerned Nigerians, majority of whom are of the Islamic faith.''

Falz stated he had no plans to take his 'This is Nigeria' video
Following the release of the ultimatum by MURIC, Pulse swiftly reached out to a representative of the rapper, Femisoro Ajayi, who confirmed that he was aware of the statement by the Muslim group, but they have no plans to take down the video.
'Yes, I have seen the statement online, but we have no official response yet, the video is out there and we have no plans to take it down, we will only respond when we get an official letter directly sent to us'', he says.
The video continues to trend on YouTube with over 5 million views in two weeks.

This is Nigeria: Finally, hip-hop wakes up to Nigeria’s problem
New Post has been published on https://www.thisdaynews.net/2018/06/07/this-is-nigeria-finally-hip-hop-wakes-up-to-nigerias-problem/
This is Nigeria: Finally, hip-hop wakes up to Nigeria’s problem
This is Nigeria: Finally, hip-hop wakes up to Nigeria’s problem
In 3 minutes, 42 seconds, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, is able to expose the terminal illness of a country which prefers to hide its sickness like its president. The artist connects with young people speaking their language (rap and hip-hop) and playing their rhythm, even though the rhythm of the song does not fall within any of the two popular basic Nigerian rhythmic structures which revolutionized Nigerian pop music and gave it its international identity.
Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz The strength of Falz’s This is Nigeria lies in the message of which the Nigerian pop music has largely been criticized of lacking. The work is a relief from the recurring message of ‘boobs, bum, bum and ‘I get plenty money’ which have dominated the lyrics of Nigeria pop music since 2007/2008 when it gained international recognition. True to his DNA, Folarin, sired by a lion, the radical Human Rights activists and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, could not have afforded to continue to sing about women’s boobs, bum bum and ‘I get money’ while the masses are groaning in pains and penury arising from bad governance and bad leadership.
Critics of This is Nigeria might argue that it is wrong for Falz to sing that everybody is a criminal in Nigeria. But the artist has already countered such criticism by branding himself in the song as a criminal too, just because he too is a Nigerian, even though we all know that Folarin Falana is not a criminal. The artist is simply mirroring how the international community collectively sees all Nigerians as criminals. This, in essence, calls for everyone, especially the good people of Nigeria, to stand up and join in the fight to rescue the country from those who are bent in plunging it to ruin. After all, when the air is polluted, everybody inhales the toxic air.
It is to Falz’s credit that in less than 4 minutes, he is able to chronicle Nigeria’s seemingly intractable illnesses, from the cock-and-bull story of a snake swallowing N36 million to youth unemployment, electric power failure, false prophets sucking the blood of sufferers and breasts of their female members, Fulani herdsmen, and the corruption-riddled Nigeria Police:
This is Nigeria. Look how I am living now. Everybody be criminal. This is Nigeria. Just because I am a criminal. This is Nigeria. I don’t have a job, and yet they want to know whether my (wrist) watch is original.
Where is madam Philomena who chop N36 million and said an animal (a snake) chop am.
youtube
(Then Enter False prophet): “I want you to raise your hands up now, because your miracle is on the way. Let’s hear you say ‘Amen!’ This is Nigeria. Praise and worship and singing is going on now. Pastor is putting his hand on the breast of the (female) member. He is pulling the thing now.
This is Nigeria. No electricity. But the people are still working hard.
Yet they say we are lazy. This is Nigeria, with plenty wahala sha.
Herdsmen killing people up and down, carry people the massacre.
This is Nigeria. Come to my area.
This is democracy. Yahoo Yahoo (boys) don full everywhere now.
This is Nigeria. Look at my nation.
(Enter the Nigeria Police)
Policemen are seen arresting innocent university students instead of going to arrest killer Fulani herdsmen, bank robbers and other criminals ravaging the country.
Epilogue
It is only in Nigeria where you can take money contributed by poor church members and build universities which the poor contributors cannot afford to send their children to go and study. It is against the law of God.
Listening to this song and watching the video, one can comfortably argue that there is nothing musically spectacular or special about it.What then is the reason behind its wide acceptance? Is it just hype, as veteran Nigerian pop music pundit, Benson Idonije, would say?
Well, it could be a hype, but it could also be that the world has long been salivating with hunger, waiting for the new generations of Nigerian musicians to wake up to using their music to address the bloated rot which has persisted since the era of Fela and Sunny Okosun. Consequently, when Falz showed up with his courageous message, he was embraced.
This is a clear green light for contemporary Nigerian musicians. Music is a powerful weapon in the fight against socio-political and economic decadence. Nigerian musicians cannot afford to be preoccupied with ill-found love for women’s breasts and buttocks while their country is on fire. Well done Falz!
Folarin Falana, aka Falz, is a Nigerian rapper, performer, and songwriter. He began his music career while in optional school with “The School Boys”. He came to limelight after his song titled “Wed Me” (including vocals from Poe and Yemi Alade) won him an assignment in the “Best Collaboration of The Year” classification at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. He was additionally selected in the “Best Rap Act of The Year” and “Best New Act to Watch” classes at the same event. Now, he has an autonomous record mark called Bahd Guys Records.
In 2011, he had a single titled “Waz Up Guy” and later “High Class” and “Cash”. On January 2, 2014, he was recorded in tooXclusive’s “Artistes To Watch in 2014”. On 30 May 2014, Falz released his presentation studio collection titled “Wazup Guy”.
On 31 January 2015, he released “Ello Bae” which won him a selection in the “Best Street Hop Artiste of The Year” classification at The Headies 2015. In 2016, Falz won “Best Actor in a Comedy Movie/Series” at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for his part as Segun in Funke Akindele’s TV program, Jenifer’s Diary. In June 2016, he was voted the champ of the “Watcher’s Choice Best New International Act” class at the 2016 BET Awards.
On October 27, 2016, Falz teamed up with Simi to for “Chemistry”, a 7-track EP exclusively created by Sess. That was after he had already worked with Simi on two singles titled “Frame Question” and “Fighter”.
