Hello Brian, I am not sure if anyone on here has asked you this before I can imagine it came up at some point but I would like to know how important album cover design is to you, as a musician and as a consumer of music.
Like are you involved in the design process of your albums or do and your band leave it completely to the designer?
Album art is a big deal to me. I was an art major in college, so having a cohesive and compelling visual design to accompany an album is very important. Unfortunately, I'm terrible with computers and not great with design.
I've been lucky to play in a lot of bands with graphic designers within our ranks. Most of the Botch layouts were conceived and executed by our guitarist David Knudson. The layouts for These Arms Are Snakes albums were done by our guitarist Ryan Frederiksen. All the SUMAC stuff is done by Aaron Turner. I'm a big believer in letting one person oversee the design and execution of a layout... it's way more likely to get muddled up and derailed if everyone in the band tries to throw their two cents into the process. Russian Circles doesn't have a graphic designer in our band and consequently album art always winds up being a bit of a challenge.
Often times, we'll have an image intended for the album art and we'll hire someone to translate and template that image (or images) into a cohesive design. Station, Empros, Guidance, and Gnosis were all designs built around photographs that we'd brought to the table. Similarly, I provided all the block prints for the Torment & Glory album and enlisted my friend Faith Coloccia to design the layout.

Every Record I Own - Day 670: Jóhann Jóhannsson Mandy
I was excited for Mandy even before the first trailer dropped. I first heard about the film because my friend Randall Dunn had been tapped by Jóhann Jóhannsson to help produce the soundtrack. I knew Stephen O’Malley was contributing to the music, which added to my interest. And I’d heard the Jeremiah Sand song featured in Mandy’s indoctrination scene early on because my friends Faith Coloccia and Monika Khot sang backing vocals on the track. I only later heard that Mandy was a high brow ‘80s-style horror movie about Nicolas Cage battling a deranged cult leader and an army of LSD-addled cannibalistic bikers. I mean... how could I not be excited for this movie?
I saw Mandy at a cinema with a bar at a tour stop in El Paso. Everyone took edibles. One member of our party got so freaked out during the indoctrination scene that he had to go and walk laps around the cinema lobby until he calmed down. Much like director Panos Cosmatos’s previous movie Beyond the Black Rainbow, the music plays a huge role in shaping the overall tone of the film, and Jóhannsson’s score helps elevate the campy aspect of the film into something that feels truly harrowing and hallucinatory.
I talked with Dunn about his experience producing Mandy when I helped write the bio for his solo album, Beloved. I don’t want to divulge any private information about Dunn’s experience, though it’s worth noting that Mandy was Jóhannsson’s last soundtrack before passing away at the age of 48 from a “lethal combination of cocaine and flu medication.” I know Jóhannsson was a huge inspiration, mentor, and advocate for Dunn’s first solo album, and I know that his passing wasn’t entirely surprising to people that worked with him towards the end of his life. And knowing those details makes the already foreboding and somber tone of Mandy all the more powerful. There’s a darkness there that goes deeper than just setting the scene for a horror movie. While my other Jóhann Jóhannsson albums make for great background music, Mandy has too much emotional weight bound up in it to serve as a casual listen.
This is truly heavy music.
