Lore Studies: Corgis, a Fairy's Favorite Steed

They're cute. They're stubby. They're herding dogs full of energy and personality. And they were the steeds of fairies, allegedly. They're Pembroke Welsh Corgis, not to be confused with Cardigan Welsh Corgis.

Allegedly, according to Welsh legend, fairies cannot fly long distances. They created Corgis to ride or pull their sleds. Only the pure of heart can see the reins and the saddles attached to Corgis. If a Corgi were too aggressive or rambunctious, you could give the Corgi an iron collar to make it more docile as fairy creatures are weak to iron.

There are a few variations of the myth of how humans gained Corgis. One story claims that the king and queen of the fairies were riding the countryside. In another version, it's the queen and her advisor. The king fell off his steed, and the queen jumped off hers to rescue him. The Corgis ran into a village and started playing with the humans there. The king and queen decided to let the dogs stay there once they saw how much joy the dogs brought the impoverished families. So all Corgis are descendants of these royal steeds.

Another version claims that the two children of a shepherd accidentally interrupted a funeral for two fairy warriors. The warriors lost their lives in a battle between Tywyth Teg and the Gwyllion tribes. Their Corgi steeds were now riderless. The surviving fairies decided the Corgis should go with the children and help them with their household tasks. In this version, Corgis descended from warriors.

Unfortunately, I could not find a reliable source that verifies if these stories are actual Wales legends. I'm not going to claim it is a real myth, but I think it would be really cool and cute if it were an authentic Welsh myth. I would love to see more media with Corgis as fairy steeds. Currently, there is a children's fantasy novel called The Corgi Chronicles by Laura Madsen and a children's graphic novel called Korgi by Christian Slade that are about Corgi steeds. Ein from Cowboy Bebop isn't a fairy steed, but I wanted to point him out because Cowboy Bebop is a good show and Ein is a good boy. In a time when people are better able to spot fae creatures, everyone knows not to answer "May I have your name?" with their real name, for fear that they will literally take it. You, a mere human with no magic, are in the business of stealing names for fairies. How do you do it?

dream and philza have flat faces, and little noses that don't connect to their upper lip at all. they have round, stunted ears on the sides of their heads, and teeth that are barely sharper than a deer's. they're omnivores, like we are, but we're much better at bitin' than them. they have no tusks and no claws. they look a bit like furless piglets, but they're kinda alien-lookin', too. their feet are flat and skinny.

dream and philza have thin, pink lips. they're plush and warm, and more expressive than piglin lips. phil chews his when he's focusing, and dream's will twitch when he's annoyed. humans see something romantic about lips. they use them to kiss, and even touching them with your hands is seen as intimate. they'll touch their lips to my snout or my hands or my forehead, and i know it's a big deal to them.

dream and philza are upright, bipedal, and have musculature like a piglin, but they're small and hairless. mostly. dream has a mop of course fur (he calls it hair) on his head, and phil's is straight, golden, and silky. there are little tufts of fur above their eyes, too, and on some other spots across their bodies. a light covering on the legs. between their size and their nakedness, they're always pretty cold. i used to ask phil all the time if he wanted to move to a warmer climate, but he never did. he doesn't mind wearing layers. they both feel safer in layers, i think. that's my running theory, anyway. if i were that small, i'd probably like it, too.

dream and philza have long, elegant eyelashes. piglins like those, too. pretty common sign of beauty in most species, i think. human eyes have a broad color range, and theirs are particularly bright. phil's eyes are icy, haunting blue. dream's are a deep, wild green. i've never seen colors like that before coming to the overworld. the sky, the sea, the forest.

dream and philza are way too small, way too delicate. i'll cup dream's face in my hand and know i could break his jaw if i squeeze too hard. i'll rub phil's sore shoulder and sometimes just hurt him more. they'll crawl on me when i'm in bed and they weigh less than some of the dogs, and if a limb gets caught under me when i roll over, they'll yelp.

there's a spot at the base of dream's neck that, if i nibble at it with my front teeth, he'll squirm and push against me and make all sorts of cute sounds. most of phil's feathers are sensitive, but you can be rough with the soft ones near the base of his wings, and his eyes will flutter closed. they both like when i run my fingers through their fur hair.

i imagine fairies are a bit like this, honestly. recognizably beautiful, but tiny and a little... off. bright and vivid; a creation of this colorful world they're from. two little fairyfolk who decided to love a beast like me.

Beautiful, Liam thought. This feeling might be awe. If he didn’t need to keep moving forward, toward it, he would have fallen to his knees.

For a moment, the ringing paused, and the vines slowed in their movements. “I am not dead,” said the voice that wasn’t his own. “You did not kill me. Even like this, you cannot tame me. Raise me, and I will live again.”

I’m sorry if this sounds rude but what would happen if you guys don’t meet the amount you need in kickstarter ?

Well, the good news is, we already have met the minimum amount we need in the Kickstarter to make The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) possible, lol. At this stage in our campaign, we are accumulating surplus - which is going towards our stretch goals. If we don't meet any of our stretch goals, the full game will still be made; we just may not be able to include the extra features we were hoping to add! Nevertheless, here are our stretch goals in question:

 SIDE STORIES (*30K USD / 40K CAD): At this stretch goal, we'll release short stories in-between our route releases that follow the other characters, so that there will always be a little content for everyone! The side stories will consist of backstory content, interpersonal stories between the love interests, romantic/platonic content with the MC, and anything else we might want to share that won't be fully fleshed out in the routes themselves!

 CUSTOM MCs (35K USD / 47K CAD): MC will receive a sprite that players will be allowed to customize, influencing eye colour, hair colour, skin tone, facial features, and hairstyle. This will also impact Daonna's sprite, as well as both of their CGs, given MC and Daonna are identical.

 EXPANDED VOICE ACTING (40K USD / 53K CAD): If you enjoyed our voice acting samples, this stretch goal will allow us to increase our voice acting budget from limited to partial! That means there will be more fully voiced scenes for important narrative moments throughout our game!

 MORE SPRITE OUTFITS (50K USD / 67k CAD): Exactly what it sounds like. We'll give all the ROs and select side characters alternative sprite outfits, or variations on their existing outfits.

 MINI GAMES (60K USD / 80K CAD): Mini Games will allow players to explore the world of NDM by simulating  Daonna's daily druidic duties. This will in turn give your MC unique  "traits" that open up new pathways in the routes. Example: A high  "fairyfolk handling" skill will make your MC more personable to the aes sídhe in the routes.

 SWITCH PORT (70K USD / 94K CAD): Exactly what it sounds like. When our game is 100% complete, we will work to port the full game to the Switch! (Routes will be available for PC/Mac before this, and all of our supporters at the Soldier's Essentials tier and higher will receive a copy of the game for the Switch, as well as a PC/Mac copy, if this goal is reached.)

had some insane dreams about some reality-hopping body-hopping the oa s2 meets madoka tragic lesbians (tragic because their meetcute is one of them human sacrificing the other in a movie theater full of other reality hoppers. their date was a fairyfolk consent under false pretenses kind of trick)(but then human sacrifice follows + haunts her through realities, sometimes remembering, sometimes not) and in my dream that's what the locked tomb was and i was finally reading it and undersood why people said it was so complicated. so imagine mfw i woke up and remembered the skull faces,

now i remember the "fashion" drabble, and while i know techno was playing up his piglinosity for laughs i kinda assumed he was happy with his "general appearance" (obvs this last part could mean as something more internal...) kinda flicked me in the forehead imao

then again i wouldn't think dream or phil would have ones looks be a deal breaker, dont kno about phils preferences but i just hc drm being attracted to anyone that could kick his ass lol

techno's definitely the type to say "step aside for the next einstein" after he misread a recipe. so like. you know.

but Actually i think that techno would have some mixed feelings about his looks. he's handsome by piglin standards, but the culture shock of living with humans would be a lot to deal with. we use "pig" as an insult for people we find unattractive, after all. pigs are used as, like, the Ugliest animals in our stories. besides the obvious dehumanization he faces and the in-your-face butcher army metaphor, he'd also have to deal with the way that humans view him. while he maintains some of his pride in being a handsome piglin and he loves his muscle and fur, he knows that he's monstrous by most people's standards.

BUT maybe it's the monsterfucker in me, but if i'm able to look at piglin artwork and think they're handsome, i feel like philza and dream would be able to, too. and ur right, dream especially seems attracted to strength more than, like, Beauty per se.
