Hi! Hope it's all good, I wanted to ask you what software you use for your edits I've honestly no clue where to start but I've loads of little clips of yours saved :D
hiya!! im so sorry for the delayed answer, i swear tumblr doesnt give me notifs about my inbox im fuming. this is quite long so the answer and some editing tips are under the cut! please feel free to reach out if there's something that doesn't make sense or if you ever need any tips or help!
i personally use adobe after effect 2020 with some plugins! most people would probably use adobe premiere pro for compilations like the ones i do but im WAY WAY WAY more used to after effect due do making daily fancams/edits in the past (i do not recommend doing this btw- got burned out after doing it for about a year LMAO). so for example if you're interested in making edits like this or this i'd go for after effect but if you wanna make stuff like this or this, premiere pro is probably the way to go, even if i use AE for both 😭
adobe products are very expensive and you need quite the computer for it to run it without crashing all the time so if you dont have the resources or want to dedicate some time into researching turrenting + vpn and how to install it properly + the plugins on top of learning a pretty confusing (at first) program i'd recommend capcut! it's a free phone app and ive personally never used it, but ive had a lot of mutuals before use it and it looks great and pretty simple to use once you get the hang of it.
learning after affect is extremely frustrating i wont lie, but it's probably the best software if you want to do complicated stuff or simply just get smooth slow mo that you often use in edits! it's worth it in the end after you get the hang of it! there's a lot of youtube tutorials out there and i'd love to help with settings and keyframes if needed!
using AE can be a little bit of an overkill if you're only looking into trying editing to see if you think it's fun and worth the time it takes, so phone apps is honestly an amazing start to get into it. i just decided to go 120% out of nowhere due to getting a hyperfixiation on deciding to learn how to edit and doing it in a more "professional" way and potentially become an editor in the future -> which did not happen. or well. i did end up having a tiktok account with 45k followers when i posted a lot of my edits of shows that i liked but i was potentially thinking of becoming a yt editor or maybe work in media more. however im a burned out nurse student now LMAO
personal tips when it comes to editing;
i use while editing is to make a mindmap or simply just write down key elements you want in your edit to make it easier and prevents you from having to redo your edit (which is painful).
to make the edit "run more smoothly" make sure to fade the clip to be more dark at the end and start the next coming clip with a fade from dark to light. learning slow mo can be tricky in any app, but if possible i use the same thing with clips where it starts faster, is the slowest in the middle of the clip, and starts to get to normal speed at the end of the clip to make the transition over to another clip seem smoother and not like a raw cut.
this might be more of a editing style preference but i always add a slight zoom (either in or out depending on the transition) at every clip so that it's not as awkwardly still. i also always add a slight shake that you cant really see unless you focus on it for the same reason as the zoom. i found that even if the transitions are extremely simple or not even there at all, these small things make an edit look way more "professional" and less choppy.
next thing is "just" to learn what transitions you like after that and dont be afraid to mess with settings, even if you follow a tutorial. its all about finding your own editing style and what you like more!
i download youtube videos using loader.to but screen recording also works! i download mine to make the fps be correct to match when im slowing down a clip but that might be a bit overkill. youtube4kdownloader.com is a great website to cut clips from youtube videos to download too! just make sure to use adblockers when using the websites!
also: editing takes a lot of time and dont feel discouraged if it takes long to finish one! once you have more of an editing style it becomes more of a routine the more you edit!
these tips can be used on any editing app (with the slow mo being an exception in some apps) but then again, dont feel like you need any of it and just go ham on whatever ideas you have! id love to see any edit of yours :D
#.asks#sorry. this is like an extremely long post for nothing AHAHAH#believe it or not but i held back a lot here PFFT

1. Description of the Appropriation Artwork:
My artwork opens up with historic black-and-white footage of civil rights marches from the 1960s and a clip of Martin Luther King Jr. speaking at the Washington March in 1963 delivering his iconic “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character" with his words echoing through the visuals that is glitching. As Martin's speech ends, modern chants of "No Justice No Peace" from the Black Lives Matter movement fade in, transitioning from black-and-white historical footage to full-color imagery of modern protests from Ferguson in 2014 to George Floyd protests in 2020, featuring powerful moments of protest signs and large crowds. After the protest, I transitioned the screen into a split-screen format playing clips of historical and modern protests facing police brutality in the 1960s and similar present-day examples. I continuously increase the glitch distortion with RGB split and TV static effects to blend the two scenes together, merging both past and present into a single chaotic image. I also added Flash historical slogans like "Equal Rights Now!" on the left side and modern-day hashtags like "#BlackLivesMatter" on the right side to smoothly connect footage, between black-and-white and color, representing the seamless connection between the past and present of clips of police confrontations and crowds in protest. For the final scene I wanted to show a hopeful yet serious vision of harmony, I added Bobby Kennedy’s speech following King’s assassination in 1968, where he calls for love and peace rather than hatred with images of protests, police brutality, and engaged hands of different races, backed by King’s “Free at last, free at last...” closing statement.
2. Intended Goal:
The intended goal of my artwork is to demonstrate how the fight against racism has evolved while remaining unresolved. I wanted to draw a powerful connection between two defining moments in the fight for racial equality in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. By appropriating historical video from Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches and Bobby Kennedy’s 1968 address, alongside present-day videos from recent protests, adding different types of glitch effects I wanted my piece to highlight the lasting struggle for justice and equality and recall reflection, questioning how far society has come and how much further it must go in the pursuit of equality.
3. Techniques and Tools Used:
Video Editing:
I used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit my video, blending together archival footage of civil rights protests, still images of historic moments, and modern protest footage. I used the split-screen effect to compare the eras visually creating smooth transitions between the past and present. I also used Audacity to apply effects like reverb and echo to the speeches, creating a reflective and distant atmosphere. Present-day protest chants also had reverb and echo to show their seriousness.
Historical Video:
The video clips of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech and Bobby Kennedy's 1968 Indianapolis speech were added to my artwork to highlight the historical context of the civil rights movement. For the modern protest footage, I used YouTube, Shutterstock, and Getty Images videos to connect the historic speeches with current events, developing the timeless nature of the fight for justice. I wanted these clips to raise strong emotions, emphasizing the past's importance and the continuity of racial injustice, encouraging viewers to consider progress and the ongoing work.
Text Overlays:
I added text overlays to emphasize the important messages of my video. I used Adobe Premiere Pro to create smooth text animations using key quotes like "I Have a Dream," "No Justice No Peace," and "Equal Rights Now!""and "Black Lives Matter" to not only make it more engaging but also maintain the timelessness of these messages, deepening the ongoing importance of the civil rights movement in today's world.
Visual Effects:
I added strong glitch effects such as glitch distortion with RGB split and TV static transitions to represent the fragmented nature of progress. I created these effects using Adobe After effects to highlight moments when history repeats itself, distorting the line between the past and present.
Still Images and Archival Footage:
I incorporated archival footage from the civil rights movement and still images of the Black Lives Matter protests to create a connected visual style that blends the historical and present-day elements. The filter effects were used to enhance the images, giving it a timeless, almost dreamlike quality while also deepening the emotional weight of both eras.
4. Ethical Justification for Appropriation:
Public Domain:
The speeches by Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy are widely distributed for public education and communication, with much of their audio and footage available in the public domain. They are being used to educate, comment on, and critique the enduring struggle for racial equality, which aligns with fair use principles.
Fair Use:
The use of historical footage and modern protest footage qualifies as fair use because I transformed the material and recontextualized to draw new meaning. My goal is not to simply display historical footage but to offer a critique on how the same issues have evolved or remained unresolved over time.
The combination of historical and modern protest clips into the project transforms their purpose. By adding different types of glitching effects, animated text, apply reverb and echo effects to the audios, and blending them with historical speeches, they no longer serve as isolated, raw documents of activism but as part of a larger, reflective narrative.
5. Evaluation and Future Development:
If I had more time, I could have further explored the contrast between footage from the 1960s and present protest images, overlaying one over the other or showing their similarities to underline the surviving nature of the struggle.

Rendering and post-production
In this wrapping-up stage, it was finally time to start rendering my cinematic video. Before doing so, I had to add all Niagara particle systems to the level sequence and animate their automatic spawn and visibility by adding keyframes. Following that, since I had previously configured different levels for atmosphere and lighting for the first scene, I had to switch the visibility on or off for each lighting scenario depending on the camera rendering. The render settings were relatively basic, with an Antialiasing value set to 32 and a Warmup render count set to 100 to give enough time for cameras to adjust t the exposure of the environment and the particle systems to start spawning.
Then came the time for post-production and editing. The first thing I did was working on the voice over narration in Adobe Premiere Pro. I had asked my cousin Joyce if she would like to do the voice acting for Kaia and read the script I had written, and she agreed to it. The main task was to clean up the recording a bit by reducing noise levels and adjusting the pitch and volume so that they didn't fluctuate an lot and remained stable. I tried out some echo and voice effect presets but decided to keep it simple in the end as it felt too distracting.
In Adobe After Effects, I ordered the renders according to the chain of though based on the script, and added some simple fade in and fade out transitions using solid layers. I played over a royalty-free piano soundtrack I found on YouTube that added a cinematic calm atmosphere similar to anime films. The rest was just adding other copyright-free ambient noise and nature sounds also from YouTube. In the end of the video, I added the "Solark" game title I designed last semester in Adobe Illustrator, as well as my name.

Alternate history timeline for my AFO!Izuku fic
Fandom: My Hero Academia
Fanfic: untitled AFO!Izuku fic
Context: This is the history timeline I’m using for my villain!Inko and AFO!Izuku fics. It’s definitely not compatible with… whatever canon thinks it’s doing.
What I’m trying to do with this is make the My Hero Academia world feel bigger (there is an entire world! It’s not just Japan!) and ground its history in… I know “historical materialism” sounds really pretentious, so I’ll just go with “shit happens for a reason”. I’m also trying to answer obvious problems that are never addressed in canon, like “how come heroes get to do the things they do?” or “Why are they considered separate from the police?”
It’s so fucking long. I’m sorry. Yes this did take me a week to hammer out.

• 1948 First confirmed Quirk. This is considered the start of the “First Generation” of quirks. Most are barely noticeable, and would only be verified after extensive demographic studies a century later. Some are very noticeable. A few dozen are immensely powerful.
• 1950 All For One born.
• 1954 All For One's younger brother born.
• 1950s The rest of the 1st wave of eventual-supervillains, including the Machine Queen, born. Many governments start projects to weaponize Quirks for both the military and as a new form of domestic control.
• 1962 US government openly starts using Quirks to speed up moon landing project, and as attempt to calm public anxieties about Quirks. (All of the Quirk-users to appear are still children.) Reaction against this leads to eventual exposure of other, more-harmful projects using Quirks.
• 1963 By this time, every Quirk-user who would eventually become a supervillain is a part of some kind of government project.
• 1966 Meta Liberation Society (MLS) founded as a response to reactionary attacks against Quirk users. (The oldest Quirk-users are about 18 years old at this point.)
• 1967 “Second generation” of Quirk users considered to start here. None of them are as powerful as the hundred or so first-gen Quirk-users who would eventually become supervillains, but their Quirks’ strength is more evenly-distributed; almost all of them have a noticeable quirk that affects their lives.
• 1968 Quirk Liberation Army (QLA) founded as more militant splinter group of MLS.
• 1970 QLA assassinates both the Soviet Union premier and the United States president. The strongest government-project Quirk-users attempt to seize power in both countries.
• 1970-1981 The Bleeding Years: civil wars become norm; most national governments fail; lots of major infrastructure is left to decay or is destroyed in violent conflicts. Around this time, All For One finds and steals an immortality Quirk.
• 1971 All For One forces a Quirk on his younger brother, ostensibly to protect him, accidentally creating One For All.
• 1981 All For One becomes dictator of Japan. Age of Supervillains begins. Various immensely powerful quirk-users have successfully carved up the world between themselves. (Technological progress is much slower than it otherwise would be, as most dictators focus on consolidating power more than anything else.)
• 1980s Due to his interest in collecting Quirks, All For One allows any Quirk-user to immigrate to Japan, and offers generous benefit programs to further encourage this. This has three major consequences:
‣ ‣ Japan becomes substantially more diverse and has a much higher population than it otherwise would, and has a far higher Quirked-to-Quirkless ratio than other countries.
‣ ‣ As Quirks become an integral part of the economy, other countries attempt to copy Japan. These pro-Quirk benefit programs would be pared back decades later, as more and more of the population is Quirked anyways, but they leave an important legacy: if you’re Quirkless, you get less.
‣ ‣ Across the world, demand for specific Quirks (both from employers and consumers) and the search for communities that can better support Quirks leads to populations rapidly urbanizing and densifying. Rural areas eventually hold most of the Quirkless, the elderly, and socially-unacceptable-Quirk populations.
• 1983 The Consortium is formed by Machine Queen to mediate between various supervillain-ruled nations in order to prevent any major wars.
• 1990s Supervillains’ children are noticeably weaker than their parents. The Consortium attempts to genetically engineer a Quirk.
• 2002 First genetically-engineered Quirk-user born. Code-named “Cesium” due to how volatile their Quirk is.
• 2010s Arranged “Quirk Marriages” become popular to compensate for weaker Quirks of second-generation supervillains, and hopefully ensure 3rd-gen supervillains will still be powerful enough to rule.
• 2016 Genetic engineering of Quirks is banned in most countries after Cesium’s Quirk proves too powerful to control and too unstable to be reliable.
• 2020s The Consortium orchestrates a peaceful transition of power between the aging first-gen supervillains and their children. (Excepting All For One, who is immortal and has no living family.) The Machine Queen has developed her technomancy Quirk enough that she goes full transhuman and, like All For One, is effectively immortal.
• 2028 Cesium marries a Quirk researcher with one of the earliest-known Quirk-disabling Quirks. They live a relatively normal life.
• 2030s Cesium’s son, Platinum, proves to have a remarkably powerful and stable quirk. This is widely credited to the mixture of his parents’ Quirks, further boosting the popularity of Quirk Marriages.
• 2050s 3rd generation supervillains come to power (again, arranged by the Consortium) and are still noticeably weaker than second-gen supervillains despite quirk marriages.
• 2055 Platinum founds the Renaissance Project, a training program for the elite, intending to overcome younger supervillains’ lack of inherent power by developing the Quirks they do have as much as possible (and usher in a “Supervillain Renaissance”).
• 2070s Fourth-generation supervillains also much weaker than their parents despite quirk marriages. Skill and creativity with Quirks becomes more important for maintaining power, and Platinum solidifies his position as the headmaster who guided a generation of dictators.
‣ ‣ A new theory suggests that the vastly-above-average Quirks of the first supervillains will continue to "regress to the mean" and weaken each generation, while the overall population's average Quirk strength will continue to increase.
‣ ‣ Supervillains fear a "crossover point" where their citizens are as strong as them, and begin massive crackdowns on Quirk usage. The phrase "Quirk Singularity" is coined to describe when the average person's Quirk strength will match that of the god-like first supervillains, thought to happen sometime in the 25th century.
‣ ‣ Supervillains start recruiting some stronger Quirk-users to enforce their will, as they can no longer singlehandedly control a whole country without extensive support. These were the forerunners to the first hero organizations.
• 2078 A man called Earthmover is imprisoned for illegal quirk use after he rescues hundreds from a landslide. This sparks protests and Japan’s League of Ten—previously government enforcers—side with the protestors and rebel. Age of Supervillains ends, Golden Age of Heroes begins.
• 2080s The crackdown on Quirk usage combines with a severe economic downturn and uprisings break out across the world. Many Quirked state enforcers side with the rebels.
• 2080 By this point, the majority of the world population has a Quirk.
• 2086 Nana Shimura born.
• 2090s Various supervillain dictators fall to uprisings. The Consortium shifts from preserving the status quo to building up underground villain organizations in the face of the new "heroic" society.
• 2092 All For One abandons the Japanese government to the rebels, hoping to continue exerting control through more discrete means than as public dictator. His new underground organization starts absorbing the remnants of other deposed supervillains and becomes the League of Villains. Earthmover & other condemned “heroes” are rescued from prison.
• 2097 The Consortium negotiates with various provisional governments, working to preserve the status quo as much as possible by simply swapping out supervillain dictators with democratically-elected “unitary presidents”.
‣ ‣ This is more or less accepted with a major compromise: No major rebel-hero groups formally dissolve or surrender, they are just in détente with the state. Furthermore, “hero” becomes an official title, and heroes form a parallel pseudo-government, determined by popular vote and with effective veto power over many major state actions. This is rejected by groups like the Meta Liberation Society, who want Quirk regulations abolished, and the Quirk Liberation Army, who want a true revolution.
• 2098 Japan's first Top Ten heroes are selected. Golden Age of Heroes ends, Silver Age of Heroes begins.
• 2099 Earthmover elected first President of Japan.
• 2100s Tensions mount between surviving villain groups.
‣ ‣ The Consortium is largely obsolete without supervillain rulers to coordinate with. The villainous Renaissance Project has been replaced with various hero training schools. Both groups are weakened and rapidly fading, meanwhile, the League of Villains is larger than ever, and All For One’s influence is no longer limited to Japan. All three groups hate heroes, but the other two blame All For One for “giving” Japan to the heroes and empowering other uprisings across the world. (All For One is removed from the Consortium’s board of directors, ending its official ties to the League of Villains and further weakening it.)
‣ ‣ Platinum revamps his organization to become CORE (Counter-Revolution), with the express goal of destroying the hero system.
‣ ‣ The Consortium openly allies with the few remaining villain dictators (no longer “super” after six generations of regressing to the mean), and discretely allies with newer governments that are increasingly nervous about hardline rebels like the QLA.
• 2100 Quirk marriages made illegal in Japan. Most other countries soon follow.
• 2101 UA is founded. Platinum (re)starts genetic engineering program to create super-soldiers for a counter-revolutionary army.
• 2105 Earthmover reelected.
• 2106 Earthmover drafts almost every geokinetic Quirked in Japan to physically expand Japan’s landmass to counter rising sea levels. (Yes, global warming is still happening in this timeline.) This is very popular with the general public, though the actual results are mixed. The project is only half-finished by the time a different president is elected. Within a couple decades, the western coast expansions become a haven for the wealthy while the eastern coast expansions are unfinished and regularly-flooded slums.
• 2109 Nana Shimura becomes 7th holder of OFA. Earthmover announces his retirement before third Japanese presidential elections.
• 2110 Second President of Japan inaugurated.
• 2110s Quirkless discrimination is growing worse. Many believe Quirkless people are naturally going extinct. Employers start preferring any Quirk at all—even an unhelpful or mediocre one—as being better than no Quirk at all.
• 2111 Toshinori Yagi born, Quirkless.
• 2120s Protests by the Meta Liberation Society against the harsh and byzantine Quirk licensing system (including the special status of hero licenses) lead to major police crackdowns on unlicensed quirk usage, fueling the growth of the more radical Quirk Liberation Army. Several countries near civil war as reactionary movements, including old supervillain loyalists, CORE, and the League of Villains, clash both with each other and with groups like the QLA.
‣ ‣ Due to their status as non-state entities, most heroes don’t strictly enforce Quirk regulations, preferring to preserve their popular image as benevolent and non-political guardians, but they are, by now, very invested in the status quo, and merciless in dealing with any perceived violence by the QLA.
• 2125 Toshinori meets Nana Shimura.
• 2128 Toshinori becomes 8th holder of One For All.
• 2130 Nana confronts All For One; he kills her. Toshinori—now going by the hero name All Might—is sent to America to assist in destroying the League of Villains branch there. Second Age of Villains begins.
• 2131 Platinum destroys San Francisco Bay Area. CORE guerillas attack and kill major heroes in Europe (the region where the League of Villains is weakest), planning to crush the hero system there and rebuild a supervillain society outside of AFO’s influence. Quirk Liberation Army and League of Villains clash in Tokyo.
• 2132 All Might stops Platinum from destroying Los Angeles. This incident makes All Might globally renowned, and encourages more international cooperation between heroes.
• 2133 CORE forces start attacking heroes in Russia. An international union of heroes confronts and kills the strongest CORE Quirked in Moscow.
• 2135 At over 100 years old, Platinum is increasingly reliant on Quirk-made support tech to continue working. Though other major villains consider the CORE super-soldier project a failure, he still quietly restarts CORE’s genetic engineering program, this time to produce “perfect” successors to continue his legacy.
• 2138 International cooperation between heroes is now routine, and the League of Villains splinters into hundreds of isolated local groups as All For One fails to keep his organization whole in the face of global coordinated attacks.
• 2139 Quirk Liberation Army collapses under pressure from heroes, who consider them villains. Current Japanese President discovered to be under mind control and peacefully removed from power by vote of the Top Ten heroes. Age of Peace begins.
• 2140s Japan is the heart of the hero system. Its heroes are considered the best, and heroes are effectively Japan’s biggest export to other countries.
• 2150 Izuku Midoriya born, Quirkless.
• 2159 All Might successfully hunts down All For One, but is grievously injured while (seemingly) killing him.
• 2164 Izuku meets All Might.
• 2165 Izuku starts at UA. Technology equivalent to about 2020-level in our world, with the exception of special Quirk-made tech.
‣ ‣ Japan’s population: 250 million.
‣ ‣ World population: 12 billion.
‣ ‣ At 136 years old, Platinum is reaching the limits of what support tech can accomplish, and begins plotting to kill as many heroes as he can before he dies.

Other Notes: This timeline isn’t just abstract worldbuilding; most stuff I wrote here is referenced by characters in-story or directly affects the circumstances characters find themselves in.
For example: the Consortium is villain!Inko’s biggest ally, and later on she moves her base of operations to Japan’s aforementioned east coast slums. The Machine Queen is AFO’s only remaining peer from his dictator days, and serves as a frenemy he can, like, actually talk to. CORE serves as a looming threat from overseas—if/when AFO falls, they will move in. Platinum’s genetically-engineered successors are intended as a villainous mirror to Endeavor’s family. I’ll go further into my villain OCs in this story in a follow-up post.
The countries that the various supervillains ruled over had very different borders than our world’s. Bigger countries tended to get split up between rival dictators, and smaller countries with no major geographical barriers between them often got subsumed and ruled as a single country. (Japan was lucky in that it was already an island nation, and stayed whole before and during All For One’s rule.)
The Public Safety Commission (and its equivalents in other countries) is the official interface between the Japanese government and the parallel pseudo-governments that heroes represent. It is both important and fiendishly complicated.
As a result of the unitary president system most countries run, most governments are hilariously corrupt and barely functional. Heroes are mostly okay with this because, hey, if it’s broke it can’t be tyranny! Neoliberalism still sucks, even in alternate universes, so welfare barely exists, and most people in need have to search for a hero-sponsored charity that caters to their specific circumstances.
There is no World Wide Web. The Consortium encouraged isolationism, trying to limit each supervillain’s ambition to their own fiefdoms. As a result, there are dozens of incompatible networks and computing architectures. (This also made censorship MUCH easier.)
Social media sites like Twitter still exist, because I want to use them as a narrative tool like other fics I’ve seen. But there are no globe-spanning networks of servers, just local subsidiaries running servers dedicated to a single country, and there is no physical infrastructure enabling them to talk to each other. This does become a plot point a couple times.
(It’s considered a big deal that UA has a special computer capable of directly communicating with overseas computers. At another point, All Might has to physically mail a recording of something to another country, because it’s literally the only way he can guarantee somebody across the planet can view the same footage.)
My “technology develops 2 to 3 times slower in this AU than it does in our timeline” rule of thumb suggests, frighteningly, that Twitter has existed for around 30 years in this timeline. (Their technological equivalent of 2007 would be about 2133, while their technological equivalent of 2019 would be in 2163 or so.)
I left out all of Inko’s villain adventures and Izuku’s upbringing, because… I haven’t settled on a timeline for them yet. Also, at a certain point, it just becomes a summary of the fic itself, which isn’t the point of posting this timeline.

"May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions!" – Joey Adams
After the decorations are packed away, many homeowners are eager to make some changes, and the Design Team with The Elements is ready with some tips for any budget or project.
The timing is perfect. A new start to a new decade! Holiday schedules are freed up, and guests have headed home. After the decorations are down and packed away, many homeowners begin to think about a change, and that change can come in many ways for any budget. As 2020 heads out of the gate, Kathy Sorbe, lead designer and owner of The Elements in Storm Lake and at Prairie Trail in Ankeny, has some ideas how homeowners can refresh living spaces that might need an update.“So many people think that restyling a space for a new look comes with a hefty price tag,” says Sorbe. “That’s just not the case. Editing and repurposing accessories … the only cost you might have is a little time. Bigger projects can come with bigger price tags, but that just doesn’t mean you can’t give yourself a new look no matter what you’ve budgeted to spend.”
Edit. Edit. Edit.
Sorbe says that when homeowners sweep up the needles, hunt down the last bits of glitter and store their decorations is a perfect time to step back and take a look at the accessories that finish the space. “Resist the pull to put everything back the way it was,” says Sorbe. “This is a great time to edit. All of us tend to display more than we need to and add, add, add. Look at what you have and plan to keep only what you love.”
Editing accessories and streamlining shelves will immediately update and smooth out a space.
Sorbe says that accessories can quickly date a space. What was a must-have a few years ago may show its age quickly. She encourages clients to ask themselves, even if they loved something ten years ago, do they still?
“Channel Marie Konda, and if it doesn’t make you happy, it might be time to let it go.”
Paint a New Canvas
A fresh coat of paint is probably the most affordable – and quickest – choice for a dramatic change.
“Paint is the least expensive way to make a big impact,” says Sorbe. “Your walls function a lot like a canvas where a painting unfolds, helping your furniture, art and accessories shine.”
Sorbe notes that many homeowners gravitate to lighter shades, but deep colors are still magical, create a dramatic and sophisticated space and, contrary to a common misconception, won’t make a room feel small.
“We still encourage homeowners to avoid the traditional accent wall,” says Sorbe. “There are many amazing, innovative and affordable wall covering options, from thin brick, textured panels, wallpaper, to reclaimed wood.”
Several products are available at their stores in Storm Lake and Ankeny, but Sorbe says that many can be found at Home Depot or Lowe’s, and most can be painted any color. Instead of painting a wall a different color, Sorbe and her Design Team frequently recommend one of these products for effect.
“We like to say we reinvented the accent wall using texture and pattern.”
Let the Sunshine In
“Window treatments can be an intimidating project, but it doesn’t have to be,” says Sorbe. “Valances, fringe, sheers … they can quickly become complicated and a big design element that can be challenging to work with.”
Sorbe and her team almost always recommend a simpler option. Leaning into natural fabrics, like cotton and linen, they avoid many of the add-ons homeowners think make them look upscale.
“There’s not a window covering made that can compete with the view it frames,” says Sorbe. “Mother Nature takes this one, and we’re not going to even try and compete. We like simple panels, hung from the ceiling to the floor. This can make windows impressive but quickly fade to the view.”
The Design Team encourages homeowners to explore blinds, roller shades and even plantation shutters.
“We really love roller shades that match the window trim,” says Sorbe. “When you want them, they’re ready to go, but when they’re up, they disappear, creating a smooth finish to the space.
The Elements’ Ankeny location sells, measures and installs Hunter Douglas shades and blinds, with a planned introduction of the service to the Storm Lake location later this year.
“Shades are a great option for privacy and light control, and some are even designed to aid in maintaining a preselected temperature in your home,” says Sorbe. “Many are motorized with remote controls that can integrate into smart home systems.”
Painting is the quickest and most affordable way to make a big change in a room. White paint, paired with matching cabinets, allows the gold accents to really shine.
Bedding in natural fabrics, like linen and cotton, are a simple palette that allow homeowners many options for coordinating pillows and throws.
From small windows to large-scale projects, Hunter Douglas is a premiere name in window coverings.
Invest in the Best
A survey completed by ten major interior design firms indicated a turn back to more custom furniture. Millennials, who frequently were bargain shoppers, are now gravitating to higher quality, large pieces instead of furniture that’s designed and priced for a very short life. Also, homeowners don’t have to adapt or settle; they can choose exactly what they want.
“Custom-made furniture tends to be more stylish, and it’s made just for you,” says Sorbe. “You won’t walk into a neighbor’s house and see the same sofa!”
Literally thousands of fabric choices and the introduction of designer performance fabrics mean shoppers can pick exactly what they want, and that the custom piece will hold up to use for many years to come.
“Instead of short-term costs, we like to remind clients of the long-term value,” says Sorbe. “Custom pieces tend to be more durable, and, if carefully selected, homeowners will enjoy these pieces for years and years.”
Sorbe cautions people not to assume custom pieces are outside of their budget. Shoppers are frequently surprised when they see prices on custom pieces less expensive than factory-produced pieces in big box furniture stores.
Homeowners looking to capitalize on space are looking for usable living areas outside.
Think Big
Sometimes, homeowners want a big change. Additions, renovations and remodels can be daunting projects; however, they can move more smoothly working with a pro.
“Working with a designer from our Design Team isn’t too expensive for anyone,” says Sorbe. “Often, homeowners want to schedule a one-hour consultation just to get some ideas and suggestions. We love helping at any stage of the project.”
She suggests talking with the Design Team early in the process, which can help homeowners avoid costly mistakes that delay the project. The designers also have access to many different lines with varying price points. Homeowners would have to shop for weeks, maybe longer, to see the merchandise the Elements’ team can show them in an hour.
Silhouette shades are designed to see out, but when closed, provide privacy and light blocking. Retracted, the shade and hardware disappear for an unencumbered view outside.
Summer’s on the Way
Even though we’re not seeing any green grass outside doesn’t mean it’s too early to start thinking about an outdoor living space.
“It will be spring before you know it, and there’s nothing we like better than unveiling our outdoor furniture, which will be in the store soon,” says Sorbe. “It can be anywhere from a six- to eight-week lead time for custom pieces, so if your resolution to refresh is happening on your patio or deck, it’s not too soon to start planning.“
Sorbe suggests bringing in the shape and dimensions of your outdoor space so the Design Team can create scaled renderings. Furniture placement – even the location of pots, side tables and outdoor lamps – is decided before the snow melts, and the homeowner knows exactly how the outdoor space will come together.
“If we have the dimensions and details, like doors or window placement, we create scaled drawings of layout options and furniture placement, not just for outdoor spaces but for any room in a client’s home,” says Sorbe. “We’re all visual, so being able to see how the room will be arranged … touching and feeling the fabric … really helps our clients make the best choices.”
Performance fabrics, like Sunbrella, and specially designed cushions mean outdoor living furniture rivals the best indoor pieces in comfort, style and durability.
To “see” how your space can come together, schedule a consultation with the Design Team at The Elements in Storm Lake or at Prairie Trail in Ankeny.

Week Six: Premiere Pro
Perks of a worldwide pandemic...? Free Adobe programs 💖 Today we learnt the basics of working with Premiere Pro 2020 when making our own videos. We had some criteria to fill which was to include a screen recording, footage of us explaining something and imported graphics. We could make the video from James’ assets or our own. I decide to use my own footage as the day after our lecture I went and purchased a new piccolo and decided to blog about it to use for this experimentation.
♫ Pic of me and the pic (hahaha ! ♫ )
SCREEN CAPTURING
A few different options were recommended for screen capturing. The first option was to download a program. These were Screenflow for Mac users and Camtasia for PC users. The second option was to use the in-built computer software to screen capture. I have a PC so the in-built software is through the Xbox Game Bar. I tried out Camtasia but as it is only a free-trial I opted for the second option. I was surprised at how easy it was to use and there are a number of different shortcuts available. I have already used it several times besides this mini-project and it has been amazing!
Taken from the Windows website:
USING PREMIERE PRO
Having only used free desktop movie apps (like last week) it was such a luxury to use Premiere Pro. We used it in the editing workspace which made it really easy to see everything and use the features. Some key features I explored:
Razor tool = C, allows you to cut long videos into smaller sections so you can apply individual features and edits
Effects = crop was a big one I used for importing graphics and exponential fade for audio. I also liked how easy it was to drag transitions as effects into the working panel.
‘i‘ and ‘o‘ = these are the two shortcuts I used to trim the videos before I imported them into the final panel.
My Layers
GRAPHICS
Adding graphics was extremely easy to do. All you need to do is drag the image or gif from the media folder into the video and drop it into the overlay section.
FINAL VIDEO
Below is my final video which was super fun to make (and I got a super nice new piccolo too). I overdid it on the effects and graphics but I really just wanted to try everything out. Will definitely be using this program for lots of video making in the future!

Week 10 – Edit your video interview down to 90 seconds adding relevant lower third graphics and video overlay. Re-encode the same video ready for sharing on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube
https://youtu.be/Y6AaHwRCLPg
Critical Analysis
In the sports industry, fans want to see the picture of their favourite teams, Great video editing can get fans into the video and gain attention all over the sports industry. This week’s activity, we had a chance to edit what we directed last week. We used Adobe Premier Pro, which is great start for people who want to learn or start editing videos in the sports industry (Berry, 2018). We added video transitions and effects like fading to black with the name of the person being interviewed. This smoothens the transition of the video without getting distracted like removing the name right away after it is shown (Mcgregor, 2021). We were able to match the two videos and change the views from both camera angles. This can show what the videos is shown in a different perspective and still look good (Siegchrist, 2020).
Film editing is part of the process of making a great video for the audience (Masterclass staff, 2021), which can help the sports organisation in a business perspective. For example, hype videos to get the fans pump before every game and showing it on their social media accounts. This will get views, likes, and gain more social media followers, and the market of the sports organisation.

Animation
My animation was to advertise an online concert for the Kpop group LOONA and was created in Procreate and Premier Pro. I made it in a vertical format so it could be used across social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram as LOONA has a largely young audience and a big online fanbase. I made the animation to the song # by LOONA (#, 2020). First I had the LOONA logo (BlockBerryCreative, 2016) fade in as the music the builds up to create anticipation and excitement. I then had the information come on screen with the beat and in large red lettering to emphasize it and give it urgency and importance. Finally I animated over a clip of the choreography (MUPLY, 2020, 2:58) for the song by taking the frames from the original video and putting them into Procreate and drawing over them to create the silhouette of the dancer. I then used Premier Pro to edit the sound and animation together.

The Dolphins get much more than just a TE with Kyle Pitts at No. 6
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports
Tua Tagovailoa should absolutely love this pick from The Phinsider in our 2021 writers’ mock draft.
Heading into the 2021 NFL Draft, the plan for the Miami Dolphins to improve this offseason should be pretty straightforward: Do whatever it takes to surround your 23-year-old quarterback with the necessary weapons to succeed.
However, the decision on who the Dolphins ultimately draft lies in the hands of general manager Chris Grier, and to a lesser extent, head coach Brian Flores. That is, unless you’re referring to SB Nation’s annual NFL writers’ mock draft. In which case, The Phinsider’s site manager Kevin Nogle will be putting on his GM cap and making the Dolphins first-round selections.
The best part of all is I get to go through and critique each pick.
So without further ado...
With the sixth pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select...
Kyle Pitts, Tight End Offensive Weapon, Florida
Height: 6’5 Weight: 245 pounds Hometown: Philadelphia, Pa 2020 Stats: 43 receptions, 770 yards, 12 touchdowns.
kyle pitts vs. alabama | #finsup 7 catches, 129 yards (18.4 YPR), 1 TD. pic.twitter.com/CKGOc2Z0tT
— josh houtz (@houtz) March 30, 2021
NOGLE:
This board fell almost perfectly for Miami. After trading back from the third spot to the sixth spot (via the 12th pick), Miami essentially has the entire non-quarterback board still available. Honestly, they could look to trade back again here, trying to entice the Denver Broncos to get in front of the Carolina Panthers with Mac Jones still available.
Miami is looking for offensive skill players all the way here. Penei Sewell is a consideration because he is such a talent, but the Dolphins need to build the weaponry around Tua Tagovailoa. If they stay at the sixth position, the pick likely comes down to an either/or between wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and tight end Kyle Pitts. Given Chase came off the board one pick before Miami, it makes this pick fairly simple.
The Dolphins are built to create and exploit mismatches, both on offense and defense. The nebulous defense where the entire front seven is moving around within a couple of yards of the line of scrimmage worked well last year. Now the Dolphins will be looking to do something similar on offense, where players can line up in different roles, so substitutions are not made, but the entire look of the offense changes. Brian Flores had a front-row view to the success the New England Patriots have had with the versatile, two tight end offense, so pairing Pitts with Mike Gesicki should be a perfect fit in Miami. Both tight ends can line up tight on the line, or spread out as a receiver. This is a home run pick for the Dolphins, who still have another first-round pick to go this year.
ANALYSIS:
With Ja’Marr Chase headed to Cincinnati, Kevin has an important decision to make at No. 6 overall. Do you draft an offensive lineman like Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater, solidifying the offensive line for years to come? Or do you target a premier pass-catcher like Alabama’s DeVonta Smith or Florida’s Kyle Pitts?
The answer may not be as cut and dry as we think.
For weeks, I admittedly thought the Dolphins’ primary target was DeVonta Smith. (I still wouldn’t be surprised if that were the direction the team goes, regardless of how the board falls.) But after going back and re-watching Kyle Pitts dominate whoever lined up opposite of him, I can’t bring myself to pass on a player of his caliber. Pitts is who the Miami Dolphins need. He is who Tua Tagovailoa needs. This is the way!
KYLE PITTS IS MORE THAN A TE! Pitts is an absolute freak that can beat CBs on the outside as well. Just look at what he did against some of the top CB prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft: ✅ Patrick Surtain II ✅ Jaycee Horn ✅ Kelvin Joseph ✅ Tyson Campbell Do it, @Eagles! pic.twitter.com/5ogvoBKPJH
— Anthony DiBona (@ByADiBona) February 26, 2021
Pitts can do it all. He can line up with his hand in the dirt and play like a traditional tight end. Or flex out wide (and in the slot), dominating some of the top defenders in the nation. In other words, he’s the ultimate offensive weapon. ‘a sWiSs ArMy kNiFe’. And let’s not act like we all didn’t see his pro day.
Pairing Kyle Pitts alongside Mike Gesicki will give everyone New England vibes, but it’s so much more than that. It’s brilliant football and would cause nightmares for opposing defenses. Sprinkle in DeVante Parker, Will Fuller, Preston Williams, Albert Wilson, Lynn Bowden Jr., Jakeem Grant, and the rest of Miami’s crowded receiving corps—and I think fans (and Tua Tagovailoa) will have reason to be excited.
(whispers: Kyle Pitts is also a capable blocker despite what I’ve read on Twitter dot com)
Last season, Miami’s offense ranked 18th in red-zone efficiency finishing the season with 58.3%. I’m no mathematician, but adding a guy like Kyle Pitts single-handedly improves this number.
Here’s what Pro Football Focus had to say about the #elite red-zone target.
+ HE’S A RED-ZONE CHEAT CODE
Florida split Pitts out wide down by the goal line, and you can’t cover both the slant and the fade — you need to cheat to prevent him from winning on either of them. If you gave him an option route based on the leverage of the guy trying to cover him one-on-one, you’ve got an instant touchdown basically every time.
As I’ve said before, I don’t envy Chris Grier Kevin Nogle if this is the way the board ultimately fell. And I think in the real world, teams may come calling for a quarterback if it were to hold true.
Could the Dolphins trade down and acquire more ammunition?
Never say never. But in this mock draft, Kevin’s pick could not have been better.
Kyle Pitts is a home-run pick, and might just be the mind stone Tua Tagovailoa needed to complete the infinity gauntlet—taking the Miami Dolphins offense to new heights.
He may not have planned to stay in Florida after school, but if Chris Grier and the Dolphins were wise, Pitts wouldn’t have much say in the matter.
Kyle Pitts, No Matter What.
