How do you feel about MARTA’s plan to redesign train stations (starting w/ Indian Creek, College Park, Five Points, Lenox, Arts Center, H.E. Holmes, & Airport) and to purchase new rail cars? Apparently it is being funded by DeKalb County’s penny sales tax. I appreciate that back in 2021 they did a “You Ride, You Decide” vote on what the new rail cars should look like, but personally I’m kind of nostalgic for the 90’s and I am really in love with the way that the stations look today. Especially Decatur…. Thoughts?

When it comes to MARTA’s revamp, like you, I’m on the side of nostalgia. I think the old rail cars look SO much better that the new ones to come. Having said that though, they’re old, worn out and definitely need to be replaced. As far as the rail stations go, I don’t feel like any of them need much more than a slight facelift and should remain the way they are (especially Decatur Station). There’s an old building facade at the bottom level of Five Points Station that shouldn’t be touched. It’s all that’s left of a pre-Civil War era building that was at street level before the city was burned. I say leave all the stations the way they are and use that money to expand the rail line. Not outward to the suburbs; maybe something easy to west through north Atlanta/ Midtown.

It seems like the theme for Atlanta’s growth is “out with the old and in with the new” … all to make way for million dollar townhomes. Brand new isn’t always better. The Beltline Trail was and is a great idea, and right along with it has come commercial opportunity and urban renewal. Neither of these, however seem to bring affordable housing. I don’t even recognize half of the Old Fourth Ward or Poncey Highland neighborhoods anymore. Murder Kroger no longer feels murdery. They even moved The Masquerade downtown. The Masquerade belongs on North Avenue in that historic excelsior mill where I saw so many great bands back in the 90s. Next they’ll move The Claremont Lounge to the Marriott Marquis.
