JBM | JOURNEY (Director's Cut) from Fabian Aerts on Vimeo.
Earlier this year, i was asked to create a metaphorical film around Art, Culture and Technology for the creative agency JBM in Dubai. The talented studio excels in the organization of international events, the creation of shows and engaging experiences focused on storytelling. "JOURNEY" is a film created to blur the lines between the physical world and the abstract world.
A WORLD OF ILLUSION Throughout the film, the viewer is subjected to the continual deception of his senses. The relationships of scales, gravity, orientation in space, transparency, mirrors are an integral part of this incredible odyssey.
THE ARCHITECTURE The general architecture of the museum is reminiscent of the prestigious Arab mosques and palaces. The curved walls, volutes and arabesques bring the oriental touch so dear to JBM. The idea of a museum quickly came to the table because by nature it represents Art in its entirety by mixing works from the past and the present with those of the future.
THE MUSIC As a director, when I start to make a film, I always have the idea of a certain rhythm, of a particular flow that will fit the images i’m creating. Unfortunately i was not asked to bring the music and sound design this time, so when i saw the final piece i was a bit disturbed because it didn’t resonate with what i initially had in mind. So i decided to create my own version of this film.

LIE from Fabian Aerts on Vimeo.
LIE is a metaphor for the promises we break, the truths we alter and the harm a few spoken words can do to our mental and physical health. LIE is a poison that gnaws from the inside both the one who utters it and the one for whom it is intended.

ADVENT from Fabian Aerts on Vimeo.
ADVENT x FAREWELL was designed as a diptych which symbolizes the beginning and the end of an era, birth and death that accompanies everything coming from this world. It portrays the dawn and the dusk, the light and the shadows, setting the 2 key points without which everything we live would simply not be possible. But these pieces also celebrate LOVE in its purest form. LOVE being the true bridge between birth and death, and without which all this would be completely useless. Keep loving, that's all that matters.

REEF from Fabian Aerts on Vimeo.
“ The beauty of death can only be judged by the beauty of life. ” - Lautréamont.
Reef is above all an ode to Nature and the wonders that surround it. Its beauty lies in its complexity, its fragility and its ephemerality.
I have always been fascinated by Nature, it inspires me everyday with its extraordinary shapes, magnificent textures, glorious color palettes and infinite patterns. Nature can teach us many lessons, but one of the most important is: Things change. Nothing is permanent. Seasons come and go. Plants bloom and fall to seed.
" You die so that others may be born or survive. "
Nature is in essence full of life, but therefore necessarily also punctuated by death. The challenge was to make these two states coexist and show how one and the other could blend harmoniously. Death is an integral part of life. It is inevitable, and when it occurs, it is often the source of new lives. There are living beings who benefit from death as food or even as habitat. This is how the cycle of life continues. Death is therefore not an end in itself, it is just a stage, a change of state, a rebirth.

SYNCED from Fabian Aerts on Vimeo.
Synced is an experimental work created in collaboration with audio artist Jutrö and his track "Travva" The film is a reflection on our current society and our desire to meet our basic needs. This is the crowning glory of exhibitionism and voyeurism.
Synced portrays this perpetual search for light, this irrational need that we have to put ourselves forward no matter what the cost. As an artist this reflection is obviously omnipresent. What drives an artist to share his work, if not this visceral need for recognition? The film is also a true ode to LOVE in all its forms. This love which nourishes, but which also destroys, the one which intrinsically changes you from the person that you are and which does not necessarily make you better or worse, but simply transforms you.
The film is also a tribute to Björk's music video "All is full of Love" released in the late 90s and directed by the talented Chris Cunningham, in which 2 robots devoid of humanity naturally end up loving each other.
