I actually watched an old TSL that helped a bit—DL was explaining how P/C was getting Level 4s with less complex elements but though V/M should get +2/3 because of their difficulty.

Anyways, I also preferred B/S to S/P through that whole cycle, so I might be a little biased. All skating fans have basis and preferences. I remember going to my school library and searching for articles in support of B/S on the computers because I knew I wasn’t the only person who thought they really deserved the gold medal. I remember finding a good one that broke down the technical difficulty and their artistry, which was different than the Canadians. I suppose it is more P/C like, but it was also more like traditional pairs skating.

Reusing a program is much more common now than it used to be, but at the GPF at the time, everyone actually had to do two free skates (crazy, right?) so S/P had one—they just struggled with it and felt they would score better with Love Story. They had a ton of media hype. I was floored to hear the commenters be so in their favor instead of neutral.

That whole year was crazy. Skating had been pretty accessible because of the Tonya/Nancy drama, the death of Grinkov, and Michelle Kwan’s likability—I feel like it was on TV all the time. With the scandal and IJS, it became less televised and coverage tapered off. I didn’t follow it as much after that, but then I saw Umbrellas of Cherbourg in 2008 and found myself all in again.

The requirements are so different now that it's actually mind-blowing. Two FS in one competition? Why even...?
