Fullmetal Alchemist and the Broken Angel PS2 game is about to go on sale and gets two pages of coverage.
Tumblr media
DVD #1 goes on sale shortly after this issue of Newtype arrives on shelves, and a 2-page advertisement for it is in the magazine.
Tumblr media
Episodes 11 - 13 will air during the magazine's shelf life and we get our titles and episode synopsis' for them. As for Monthly Sales, Melissa is absolutely crushing the competition. sorry nobody asked but I have a burning need to list my fma 03 OP/ED song ranking
#1 Rewrite - maybe not my absolute favourite musically (tho very very close) but this IS fma 03. it fits the vibes perfectly.
#2 (honestly this could just as much be #1 depending on my mood) Kesenai Tsumi - this is also another track that just feels like it's quintessentially 03 - a mourning wistfulness mixed with hope. and hurts extra bad after nina :(
#3 Lost Heaven - such a sense of wistfulness but also looking forward and sums up the themes of COS perfectly
#4 Ready Steady Go - it's just fun! really captures the energetic vibes of the era when 03 is still kindve trying to pose as a fun adventure of the week
#5 Melissa - not as much sheer sense of adventure as ready steady go but still a good nostalgic time
#6 Undo - honestly I'm not a huge fan of it as a song but the vibes for where the show is at when it plays are immaculate
#7 tobira no mukou e - it's neat but nothing special
#8 and 9 I will and motherland - tbh these just flat out do not feel like fma 03 to me, especially for the point in the series where they play, and I just don't care for them musically either. however points to I will for the really sick visual of the homunculi facing off w ed in a graveyard
#10 Link - I don't hate this song but I listened to it literally 5 minutes ago and I still cannot remember how it goes in the slightest. I'm sorry

idk if you've answered this before (sorry if you have) but if you had to rank the fma openings (including bhood and cos) how would you rank them
i have not answered this before and thank you because this is fun. i love ranking things lol.
i think a lot of my rankings actually line up with Mother’s Basement’s ranking video, and i agree with pretty much everything he says about these openings. i rec that video because he has a lot of good analysis. i just rank some higher than he does due to personal preference and because my rankings depend a lot on the song choice, which i know goes against how most people rank anime openings, but honestly if im not vibing with the song i wont vibe with the visuals no matter how good they are (which is why rain isnt ranked higher despite having some of the best poetic imagery, cuz idc for the song).
dont ask me to explain why i ranked some higher, because i KNOW some of the lower ones are just. objectively better than the higher ones on a technical level. i just go by a feeling. which ones make me feel the most and which ones i just instinctively like more. the top three i definitely could analyze why i love them the most, tho.
9. melissa--dont roast me for this but i never cared for this op. even if it gives a sense of comfort due to nostalgia, being the very first fma opening i ever saw and all.
8. hologram
7. undo
6. rain
5. period
4. golden time lover
3. ready steady go
2. again
1. rewrite

(1/2) One of 2003 FMA's OP is Melissa :). All FMAB OPs and EDs are great but my favorites are Hologram, Golden Time Lover, and Rain. Yes yes DS has a very cool animation (as expected of ufotable with the unlimited budget works), and Violet Evergarden has some of the most beautiful art out there (I'm looking forward to the movie <3). For animation I'd go with Violet Evergarden, Made in Abyss (for the scenery and background art), and ufotable's Fate Series... - santa #2
(2/2) (whether it's Zero, Unlimited Blade works, or Heaven's Feel). I haven't seen Promare. I think I should :D. My fav OSTs are Shinsekai yori (by Shigeo Komori), and overall I always love Yuki Kajiura's work (like with Madoka Magica and Heaven's Feel). I'm into slice of life too, I haven't seen the titles you mentioned D: but I notice that people are saying Non Non Biyori and Kakushigoto are great. My favorites are Barakamon and My Roommate is a Cat. What genre do you enjoy most? :) -santa #2
Hii Santa dear, so sorry for this late reply! Been a bit swamped with holiday things and being forever tired, but Happy Holidays!! Hope you’re able to have a lovely few days. ^^
I listened to Melissa earlier and omg the nostalgia of hearing it!! Deff feels like the anime music from back in the day haha but I do love it and remember that song! Agree!! My favorites are Period, Rain, and Again! :D
I have yet to see the first Violet Evergarden movie, but I too look forward to the 2nd one. Omg I love Made in Abyss too (I was not ready for how dark that anime became though tbh?? lol, also they have great OST). Oops, I haven’t seen all of Fate, but I really should. As for the other ones you mentioned liking :O I’m going to listen to some of their OSTS then!
Ooh Barakamon is so good! Have you seen Handa-Kun too? Also, Kakushigoto kinda reminded me of those two in a way. For anime I tend to throw myself into most, it’d probably be Shounen. But I really do love a good slice of life? I’ll need to check out the one you mentioned. ^^ To name another one, Sangatsu no Lion has stunning art/osts and story!
Also sports anime...I swear I don’t really go in thinking I’ll love it and then I become so invested, it gives me life. So yeah I guess those are my most enjoyable. What’s your favorite genre? :D ❤ ❤

Favorite Fullmetal Alchemist OP and ED? From both adaptations.
WELLWELLWELL
FMA:B- GOD THIS WAS SO DIFFICULT BECAUSE I LOVE ALL 10 OF THEM. OP 1, Again. It is my fave opening of all times. It does such a perfect job of setting up the mood for the series, of showing us the sadness of a lost childhood and retaining the hope for better days. ED 1, Uso. Shunkan Sentimental is my musical favorite, but Uso is so iconic and memorable and the cute, childish style of it once again tugs on my heartstrings for the same reasons as the OP. Plus, the lyrics murder me.
FMA: OP 1, Melissa. I can IMAGINE being a middle schooler in 2003 and losing my entire shit as that beat kicks in and a metal arm rises through the screen. It has such a fun shounen vibe, just all around good times. As for the ED, I gotta confess I’m not a fan of any of them, so I’ll default to ED 3 cuz Winry

I know everyone wants to know my opinion on this very important topic, so I’m going to make a post ranking the Fullmetal Alchemist openings & endings from both anime. I’m ranking OPs in one category and EDs in another, but both the 2003 and Brotherhood songs at the same time. Disclaimer: these are my personal opinions and whatever FMA openings or endings you like, YOU are valid.
OPENINGS
#1 Period [Chemistry] Brotherhood OP4: this song slaps. The animation in every FMA opening and ending is amazing so you can’t really judge them that way, but I do like that scenes in the beginning & end where Ed and Al are standing alone vs with the entire rest of the cast surrounding them. This one is on my top 20 list of karaoke songs.
Is this list going to be more about my personal taste in music? Yes. It is.
#2 READY, STEADY, GO [L’arc-en-ciel], 2003 OP2: most people prefer Brotherhood to the 2003 anime. I’m not most people. I’m in that margin that VASTLY prefers Brotherhood. But 2003 anime went off with this opening. I listen to it all the time.
#3 Rewrite [Asian Kung-fu Generation], 2003 OP4: I love AKG and honestly this would probably be number one except it doesn’t FEEL like an FMA song. Like, it’s one of my favorite songs of all time, but it’s hard for me to associate it with Fullmetal Alchemist at all.
#4 Rain [SID], Brotherhood OP4: Would be higher but I do actually have an animation complaint and that is about the several parts where they play clips too fast. Maybe it’s just me. Beautiful song, though.
#5 Again [YUI], Brotherhood OP1: REALLY hard to sing, but beautiful song and has a cool opening animation, especially since it kicked off Brotherhood. I will never sing this in karaoke.
#6 Golden Time Lover [Sukima Switch], Brotherhood OP3: also difficult for karaoke but I like the rhythm. I don’t feel like this one is that popular? I like it, though.
#7 Hologram [NICO Touches the Walls], Brotherhood OP2: this one slowly grows on me every time I rewatch Brotherhood so eventually it might crawl it’s way up to 4th place. It’s not getting any higher than that, though.
#8 & 9 Melissa [PornoGraffiti], 2003 OP1 & Undo [COOL JOKE], 2003 OP3: actually I don’t like either of these.
ENDINGS
#1 LET IT OUT [Miko Fukuhara], Brotherhood ED2: probably one of my fav anime endings of all time, that episode where it plays when Ed’s getting dragged back through the door of Truth and promises to get Al’s body back? INCREDIBLE. Most beautiful of all the songs on this list.
#2 Unerasable Sin [Kitade Nana], 2003 OP1: we all like this one. Don’t lie.
#3 Uso [SID], Brotherhood ED1: it’s catchy and I love the art style.
#4 Shunkan Sentimental [SCANDAL], Brotherhood ED4: badass, I love it. This one almost feels like an opening.
#5 I Will [Sowelu], 2003 ED4: another one that doesn’t really scream “Fullmetal Alchemist” to me, but it’s so pretty and catchy, I still periodically get it stuck in my head, probably more than any other FMA song.
#6 Motherland [Crystal Kay], 2003 ED (think it was 3): 2003 had some pretty good endings. This one is also gorgeous.
#7 To the Other Side of the Door [YeLLOW Generation], 2003 ED (not sure if it was 2 or 3]: I don’t have strong feelings about it, but it’s decent.
#8 Ray of Light [Nakagawa Shouko], Brotherhood ED5: it’s just... so generic compared to all the other endings and openings. Most generic song on this list.
#9 Tsunaide Te [Lil’B], Brotherhood ED3: the only reason this is under Ray of Light is that I’m not fond of the forced rapping bit. Otherwise, it’s really pretty and we love to see a girl character-themed ending.
I think that’s comprehensive enough. Not doing the movies. I haven’t seen Star of Milos and I refuse to acknowledge Conqueror of Shamballa.
I can’t do one for Full Metal Panic because there are only... four of each of these. And they’re all about equal level for me. Most of them are by Mikuni Shimokawa (although you know what, I haven’t heard all the Director’s Cut EDs or either Invisible Victory song). I’m kinda partial to Minami Kaze (TSR’s opening). I originally didn’t like Tomorrow very much during my rewatch but I watched season one so many times... it grew on me. “You will listen to this song until you like it!” Yeah, that’s what happened haha...

For the second time in 3 months, for Fullmetal Alchemist's popularity brings it back as the cover feature on Newtype Magazine for March 2004 with 10 full pages of info. Let's look inside!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking ahead at the upcoming story elements, we get our first look at the Laboratory 5 story line with four pages.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have a two page spread covering the ladies of the show, then another two page spread featuring interviews with Romi Park, Rie Kugimiya, Tōru Ōkawa, and Keiji Fujiwara. The last two pages are dedicated to the secondary characters we've been introduced to over the last few weeks, plus a bit of information on the new OP/ED everyone's been enjoying!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Monthly rankings!
FMA lands at #2 most popular show going into March after sitting in #1 entering February (Flame vs Fullmetal did great things for the popularity!).
Ed occupies #2 most popular male character (down from #1 in Feb), Roy holds steady at #5. Riza sits at #3 most popular female character (down from #2), and Winry is at #5 (down from #3). FMA DVD 1 ranks #3 best selling anime DVD behind Gundam Seed Vol 10 and Nausica Valley of the Wind's first DVD release (previously VHS only).
And still crushing it 3 months later, Melissa comes in as the 2nd best selling anime single, just behind the new Astroboy theme song.
Finally, the Furoku purchase bonus this month is an FMA sticker book, with 10 pages of stickers from the illustrations featured in Newtype the prior few months!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the April preview, Gundam returns to the cover, but don't worry there's going to be a whole lot more FMA too!
