BUG AHEAD!

Meet my little bathroom friend Claudia! She is a bathroom moth fly (aka Clogmia albipunctata) and she is so cute!!!!! She is a member of the Diptera order meaning she is a true fly, even though she is fuzzy like a moth. All these photos were taken by me :D

You've probably heard of bee flies; but allow me to introduce you to micro bee flies (Mythicomyiidae). Silly little sesame seeds 💛

It’s a fly-eat-fly world out there… in the sandy scrubland of central Florida, a hanging thief robberfly (Diogmites esuriens) devours a beefly (Exoprosopa fascipennis).

Interestingly enough, the beefly is a parasitoid that lays eggs in the nests of sand wasps (Bembix), which are themselves specialist hunters of flies including both beeflies and robberflies (though I’m not sure whether this hanging thief is too formidable to be on the wasps’ menu). Insect food webs are amazingly convoluted.

Hanging-thief giving herself a wash on my hand, these guys are the coolest and I say that about all critters but cmon. They get their name from the way they hang off objects and hold their prey, that’s rad as hell.
