ORLANDO, FL – At the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, FL, Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz (18-2-1, 8 KOs), from Worcester, Massachusetts, claimed the WBA Continental USA Jr. Welterweight title with an impressive fourth-round TKO victory over Christian Rubio Mino (24-10-2, 17 KOs) of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ortiz showcased his skill and precision at every turn, ultimately securing the title and further solidifying his presence in the Jr. Welterweight division. The 10-round main event was broadcast live worldwide on DAZN.
From the opening bell, Ortiz, who is co-promoted by Boxlab Promotions and CES Boxing, showed a different look than usual as he was the stalker in this fight, walking down Mino for the entire four rounds. Ortiz dropped Mino four times before the referee stopped the bout at the 2:00-minute mark of round four.
"This victory is a huge step forward for me,” stated Ortiz. “Securing the WBA Continental USA title shows that all my hard work and commitment are paying off. It’s a great feeling to add this belt to my journey, and I’m just getting started. I’m ready to face all the champions in the division. Jose "Rayo" Valenzuela is at the top of my hit list, but I want everyone. My goal is to keep climbing and prove that I belong with the best at 140 pounds. I want to make my mark on this division and move one step closer to a world title.”
In the 8-round co-main event, 18-year-old Kaipo Gallegos (7-0-1, 6 KOs), a southpaw from Las Vegas, NV, was victorious in an all-action war, defeating Iron Alvarez (15-3, 11 KOs) for the WBA USA Continental Youth title. From the opening round, Gallegos was successful with his combination punching. Iron showed a lot of resilience, standing his ground while landing some powerful right hands. Gallegos kept the pressure on and ended the fight with a flurry of punches to the head, forcing the referee to stop the bout at the 2:38 mark of round seven.
"Alvarez was as tough as they come, and he pushed me every round,” said Gallegos. “It was a battle from start to finish, and I knew I had to dig deep to come out on top. Winning the WBA Youth super featherweight title against a fighter like him is a huge accomplishment, and I’m grateful for all the hard work my team and I put in to make this moment happen. Now that I have this title, I’m ready for bigger challenges. I want to keep climbing the ranks and face the best in the division. My goal is to keep proving myself, and I’m ready to take on anyone standing between me and a world title shot."

[ad_1] The Astros are going to position Yordan Alvarez on the 10-day injured checklist as a result of a hand damage, experiences Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest.Alvarez handled a hand concern again in June that precipitated him to overlook a couple of video games. He has evidently been taking part in via the damage since that point, with Morales relaying phrase from supervisor Dusty Baker that the problem has been getting worse. Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle relays that the membership is hoping that a interval of relaxation will help the slugger be prepared for his or her collection in opposition to the Yankees, which is true after the All-Star break. As a result of upcoming break, that is in all probability the most effective time for a participant to hit the IL as a result of a nagging damage. If he can return after a minimal keep, because the Astros hope, Alvarez might miss simply seven video games. After the All-Star break, the Astros are in for a little bit of a grind, as they begin with a double-header in opposition to the Yankees as a part of a stretch whereby they play 19 video games in 18 days. By happening the IL now, he’ll miss video games in opposition to the A’s and Angels however probably be able to go for that stretch the place they play the Yankees, Mariners, A’s, Crimson Sox and Guardians.Though Houston is clearly of the opinion it is a minor concern that be shortly cleared up, it’s nonetheless noteworthy that it’s lingered for the previous three weeks, because it was June 19 that the hand concern first compelled him to overlook a sport. After all, it’s additionally noteworthy provided that Alvarez has been maybe the most effective hitter on the planet this yr. With 26 residence runs and an total slash line of .306/.405/.653, he’s been 97% higher than the league common hitter this yr. His 197 wRC+ is first amongst certified hitters, six factors forward of Paul Goldschmidt’s 191 and 20 factors forward of Aaron Choose’s 171. Alvarez has largely been used as a DH this yr, with 33 left subject appearances blended in. With Michael Brantley additionally on the IL, this leaves the membership a little bit stretched on the grass, with Kyle Tucker, Jake Meyers and Chas McCormick seemingly getting the majority of the common motion. Aledmys Diaz, Mauricio Dubon and J.J. Matijevic are additionally round as outfield-capable choices. There’s little cause for the Astros or their followers to panic, as their 55-29 report provides them a 12-game lead within the AL West. If the accidents to both Alvarez or Brantley linger in the direction of the neighborhood of the August 2 commerce deadline, the membership might all the time look to outfield upgrades at that time.Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle first relayed that Alvarez was not with the crew and that the problem was his hand (Twitter links). Latin American crime cartels turn to cryptocurrencies for money laundering- Technology News, Firstpost
ReutersDec 09, 2020 03:15:41 IST
By Diego Oré
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – In April 2019, Mexican police arrested suspected human trafficker Ignacio Santoyo in a plush area of the Caribbean resort of Playa del Carmen after linking him to a prostitution racket extending across Latin America.
Yet it was not the 2,000 women Santoyo is alleged to have blackmailed and sexually exploited that ultimately led to his capture, but the bitcoin he is suspected of using to help launder the proceeds of his operations, officials said.
The cryptocurrency is emerging as a new front in Latin America’s struggle against gangs battling for control of vast criminal markets for sex, drugs, guns and people, according to law enforcement authorities.
“There’s a transition to committing crimes in cyberspace, like acquiring cryptocurrencies to launder money … and the pandemic is accelerating it,” said Santiago Nieto, head of the Mexican finance ministry’s financial intelligence unit (UIF).
Neither Santoyo, who is in custody, nor lawyers representing him could be reached for comment, and they have not commented publicly on the case in the past. The Mexican attorney general’s office declined to comment while the case remained open.
Santoyo’s arrest represented an early success for a new law in Mexico – one of only two nations in Latin America, with Brazil, to enact such legislation – that seeks to tackle the intractable problem of how law agencies can track the use of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies designed to anonymize users.
The law requires all registered cryptocurrency trading platforms to report transfers above 56,000 pesos ($2,830). It was passed in 2018 but it took many months to implement the system, which is still a work in progress.
Bitcoin’s use to launder money is particularly increasing among drug gangs such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel of captured kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, U.S. and Mexican authorities say.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has faced record levels of gang-fueled violence during his first two years in office, and the prospect of cartels hiding their profits in lightly-regulated spaces is a major concern.
The sums involved in the few cases uncovered are typically thousands or tens of thousands of dollars. They represent a drop in the ocean compared with organized crime’s hard cash laundry – estimated at $25 billion a year in Mexico alone, according to the government and financial-intelligence firms.
Yet larger sums have begun to crop up across the region over the last three years, with a team of international police breaking up three Colombian drug gangs laundering millions of dollars via cryptocurrencies, authorities say. In Mexico, the hope is that the new rules will help snare big fish.
‘BANDIDOS REVOLUTION’
The only thing tougher than smuggling drugs across borders is getting the profits back to cartels, officials say. Cash is heavy, and transporting it exposes traffickers to high risk. Putting it into banking systems geared to detect dirty money is perilous, too.
UIF chief Nieto said criminals typically split their illicit cash into small amounts and deposited them in various bank accounts, a technique known as “smurfing”. The threshold for banking transactions that raise red flags is $7,500.
They then use those accounts to buy a series of small amounts of bitcoin online, he added, obscuring the origin of the money and allowing them to pay associates elsewhere in the world.
In Santoyo’s case, authorities who had been pursuing him for months said they finally tracked him down after he bought enough bitcoin to trigger an alert under the new law. Moreover, when making his transactions via a registered platform, Santoyo left personal details including his phone number and address.
Between May and November 2018, Santoyo and his sister acquired some 441,000 pesos ($22,260) in bitcoin between them on Bitso, a trading platform in Mexico and Argentina, according to government records seen by Reuters.
Bitso, one of 11 registered crypto trading platforms in Mexico, declined to comment.
Mexican authorities also have their sights set on “Bandidos revolution team”, a gang federal prosecutors suspect of stealing millions of dollars through cyber attacks on large banks.
In May 2019, authorities detained suspected gang leader Hector Ortiz in the central state of Guanajuato after he spent “tens of thousands of dollars” on bitcoin.
That triggered the bitcoin threshold sensor, enabling investigators to trace Ortiz via his phone.
Neither Ortiz nor lawyers representing him could be reached for comment. The Mexican attorney general’s office declined to comment because the case remains open.
DELVING INTO DARK WEB
Rolando Rosas, head of the Cyber Investigations Unit (UICOT) at the Mexican attorney general’s office, said it was tough to track criminals’ use of bitcoin, even with the new law.
UICOT has about 120 people on its staff. But to be competitive, it needs about four times that, he added.
The work is painstaking, and often frustrating.
The new law has led to 1,033 bitcoin threshold alerts being triggered so far this year. Investigators must chase up each one to check if it could be suspicious and whether the user is linked to any criminal behavior or cartels.
Even then, such a system can only identify transactions with registered trading companies. Rosas acknowledged his team had limited visibility of dealings in the dark web and unregulated platforms, which U.S. and Latin American officials say mask the true scale of laundering.
About 98% of all Mexico’s transactions above the 56,000-peso threshold in 2020 were flagged by one registered crypto platform, in the CJNG cartel’s home state of Jalisco, according to government data seen by Reuters.
That, said UIF chief Nieto, suggested the CJNG could be active in money laundering via cryptocurrencies. But it is too early to estimate how much money is involved in Mexico’s crypto laundry because data is still scarce, he added.
Tomas Alvarez, general director of crypto platform Volabit, told Reuters his company was the one referred to in the government data, but he denied any relationship with organized crime.
“It is a mistake (…) to assume that since the alerts are generated by a company based in Jalisco, they must correspond to residents of Jalisco,” said Alvarez.
“Volabit is a digital platform; we have users from all over the country. In fact, most of the reports are not from users who live in Jalisco. If our offices were in Mexico City they would say that 98% of the reports come from a company registered in Mexico City,” he added.
In a sign of the lengths organized crime is going to avoid moving hard cash, U.S. officials have told Reuters that cartels are also turning to Chinese “money brokers” who use burner phones and Chinese banking apps to move funds.
A drop in seizures of hard currency, from $741 million in 2011 to $234 million in 2018, suggests newer technologies including cryptocurrency laundering are gaining ground, according to a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) report published in January this year. Most of the money came from Colombian and Mexican cartels, it said.
The DEA told Reuters the use of digital currencies by such cartels – or Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs)- was an “emerging and increasing trend to launder illicit proceeds”.
“Both Mexican and Colombian TCOs are increasing their use of virtual currency because of the anonymity and speed of transactions,” said spokesman Michael Miller. “It is believed the use of virtual currency will only increase in the future.”

Goalkeeper coach Emilio Alvarez leaves Manchester United
Stewart Robson examines Manchester United’s squad and shares his thoughts on where they’ll finish this Premier League season.
ESPN FC’s Mark Ogden details the dismal situation facing Manchester United on and off the pitch.
Goalkeeper coach Emilio Alvarez has left Manchester United, the club have confirmed.
The Spaniard moved to Old Trafford in 2016 to work with David de Gea. The pair also spent time together at Atletico Madrid.
Alvarez’s departure comes after United appointed Richard Hartis as senior goalkeeper coach in the summer after spells alongside manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Molde and Cardiff.
“I would like to thank Emilio for all the help and hard work since my return to the club,” Solskjaer said. “We all wish him well for the future.”
The news comes just two weeks after United announced a new long-term contract for De Gea that could keep him at the club for the next five years.
“I will always be proud of belonging to this club,” Alvarez said. “Wishing you every success in your endeavours.”

Luis Alvarez, The New York Police Officer Who Fought For 9/11 First Responders Dies At 53
http://tinyurl.com/y4wbqsxk Luis Alvarez succumbed to most cancers he developed years after working at Floor Zero. Earlier this month, retired New York police detective Luis Alvarez delivered a heartbreaking plea to Congress to increase the September 11th Sufferer Compensation Fund, which supplies monetary help to first responders who had developed sicknesses after responding to the 2001 terrorist assaults. On Saturday, his household confirmed that the New York Police Division veteran had died at 53, having succumbed the most cancers he developed years after working at Floor Zero. His legacy is cemented in his advocacy for his fellow first responders. Politicians and activists vowed on Saturday to proceed the battle in his title. Household spokesman Matt McCauley confirmed to The Washington Put up that Alvarez died within the early hours of Saturday morning because of “9/11-related most cancers.” Alvarez had developed colorectal and liver most cancers in 2016. He’s survived by his spouse, Alaine Parker Alvarez, and his three youngsters: David, Tyler and Benjamin. He’s additionally survived by his mother and father Felipe and Aida Alvarez, his sister Aida Lugo, and brothers Fernando and Philip Alvarez. “It’s with peace and luxury, that the Alvarez household announce that Luis (Lou) Alvarez, our warrior, has gone dwelling to our Good Lord in heaven at this time,” the household stated in an announcement. “Please keep in mind his phrases, ‘Please care for yourselves and one another.’ We informed him on the finish that he had gained this battle by the numerous lives he had touched by sharing his three yr battle. He was at peace with that, surrounded by household.” In response to The New York Occasions, Alvarez joined the NYPD in 1990 and commenced his profession at a Queens precinct. He rose via the ranks, being transferred to the Narcotics Division earlier than changing into a detective. He finally grew to become a bomb squad detective, earlier than retiring in 2010. After he grew to become ailing, Alvarez started working with the FealGood Basis to advocate for 9/11 victims, in keeping with the group’s founder John Feal. “This one hurts greater than traditional,” Feal informed The Washington Put up on Saturday. “This one makes my coronary heart bleed. This one’s bruised my soul, and this one goes to be onerous to recuperate from. I miss my pricey pal. Anybody who knew him ought to wish to embrace and emulate the best way he lived. He gave of himself on 9/11 and the best way he lived his life till the very finish. Perhaps the Congress and the Senate can study a factor from his passing.” Certainly one of Alvarez’s ultimate acts of advocacy was serving to push an extension of the sufferer compensation fund via the Home Judiciary Committee. The invoice reauthorizes cash for the compensation fund till 2089, guaranteeing a long time of help for the emergency responders and their households who proceed to undergo practically 18 years later. The present $7.5 billion fund is at risk of operating out of funds earlier than its present 2020 expiration date. It has already paid about $5 billion to 21,000 claimants, however as of February, 19,000 unpaid claims stay unaddressed. Officers stated they must pay decreased claims beginning Feb. 1, a scenario that Rupa Bhattacharyya, the particular grasp overseeing the funds, known as “horribly unfair.” Sitting beside former Day by day Present host Jon Stewart at a June 11 listening to, Alvarez implored members of Congress to replenish the fund as 1000’s of responders and their households look forward to help. “I shouldn’t be right here with you, however you made me come,” he stated. “You made me come as a result of I cannot stand by and watch as my associates with most cancers from 9/11 like me are valued lower than anybody else due to after they get sick, they die.” “It’s my purpose and it’s my legacy to see that you simply do the appropriate factor for all 9/11 responders,” he stated. “You all stated you’d always remember,” Alvarez stated on the listening to. “Properly I am right here to just remember to do not.” Alvarez informed the lawmakers that he was scheduled to obtain his 69th chemotherapy remedy, however the subsequent day he felt too disoriented to proceed remedy and was positioned in hospice care shortly after, in accordance his Fb put up from June 19. “I’ll proceed to battle till the Good Lord decides it is time.” As his loss of life has reminded lawmakers, time is operating out for a lot of like Alvarez. Congress “can not enable Lou Alvarez to have died in useless,” invoice co-sponsor Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., wrote in a tribute on Twitter. “His legacy lives on in all of us on this battle,” tweeted Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., who launched the September 11th Sufferer Compensation Fund renewal laws. Maloney informed The Put up earlier this month that she hopes the invoice will move the Home in July. On Tuesday, Alvarez’s fellow advocates met with Senate Majority Chief Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who informed them that the Senate hoped to move the invoice by August. The assembly got here after McConnell confronted direct criticism from Stewart over his dealing with of the renewal. Throughout that assembly, at Alvarez’s request, the activists offered McConnell along with his gold detective’s badge within the hopes of instilling a way of urgency to the Senator. “I would like you to know that my time to depart this world is quick approaching,” Alvarez wrote a letter to the bulk chief that accompanied the badge. “My purpose and legacy on this world was to see the VCF handed. You might have the facility to try this.” “In the event you move it,” the word concluded, “I’ll die a contented man.” (Aside from the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV employees and is printed from a syndicated feed.) Since the 1930s, when Sixto Escobar first raised his hands as a bantamweight champion, the sweet science and the island of Puerto Rico have gone hand-in-hand. Escobar's victory sparked a chain reaction, leading to more than sixty world champions and 12 fighters inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The island has produced more world boxing champions per capita than any other country, with 15 or 16 champions per 1 million people.
CANELO ALVAREZ VS. EDGAR BERLANGA
The next potential titleholder carrying the island's flag will receive his opportunity to claim his status as a world champion is Edgar "The Chosen One" Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs). The 27-year-old will take a massive step up in competition when he meets Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) in the squared circle on September 14. Despite starting his career with 16 straight first-round knockouts and an undefeated record, Berlanga is a huge underdog against Alvarez. Upon its announcement, the fight itself was met with more eye-rolls and groans than genuine excitement. According to DraftKings, Alvarez is an -1800 favorite, and Berlanga is a +1000 underdog.
The event has been promoted as another chapter in the rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico. Fighters representing both countries have engaged in some of the best fights the sport has seen and some of the biggest from a box office perspective. In September 1999, 25 years ago, the most anticipated and significant money-drawing event involving fighters from Puerto Rico and Mexico occurred between Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya. The fight drew 1.4 million PPV buys and, at the time, was the most sold on PPV for a non-heavyweight match. Although plenty of battles between Mexico and Puerto Rico resulted in a better fight inside the ring, none captured the sports world quite like De La Hoya and Trinidad.
The fight's success led to promoters using the rivalry to promote future bouts. At times, in ways where it felt manufactured and not genuine. In the case of the power-punching Berlanga, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, his representation of Puerto Rico has come off as disingenuous and has received mixed feedback from fans on and off the island. The differing reactions to his representation of Puerto Rico stem from a divide between Puerto Ricans who live on the island and those on the mainland of the United States.
The Great Migration
In the 1950s and 60s, a massive influx of Puerto Ricans left the island to travel to the United States, known as the Great Migration. The controversial Jones-Shafroth Act, also known as the Jones Act, established in 1917, granted U.S. citizenship to the people of Puerto Rico, thus allowing travel to the United States without a passport. Most of those who migrated to the United States established communities in cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, and, most prominently, New York. Another exodus from the island has taken place since the year 2000, with steadily increasing rates of Puerto Ricans leaving the island for job and family-related reasons.
There are more Puerto Ricans in the mainland United States than on the island, with over 5.9 million. Florida and New York have the largest concentrations of Puerto Ricans. The island has over two million fewer people, at 3.2 million.
Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Berlanga is primarily recognized as being Nuyorican- a term to describe Puerto Ricans living in New York with their own culture and community. For many, Berlanga's New York background disqualifies him from being labeled an authentic Puerto Rican. Ironically, one of Berlanga's most well-known detractors is Oscar De La Hoya, who faced similar criticism in the 1990s from fans in Mexico. It could be a generational divide between the two; however, the six-division champion turned promoter has been critical of Berlanga's claim as a true Puerto Rican.
"Edgar Berlanga, who is fighting Canelo on September 14, now he claims he has a whole country behind him," De La Hoya stated on his social media. "Edgar, bro, you're from Brooklyn. I think I'm more Puerto Rican than you are. And I only lived there for six years. Puerto Rico doesn't claim you, bro."
ENTITLEMENT OR EMBRACEMENT?
A large percentage of Puerto Ricans on the island are Spanish-speaking only, and more are bilingual. Yet, the ability to speak Spanish has always endeared to fans on the island. Perhaps the island's most beloved star, Felix Trinidad, took pride in speaking little English, maintaining a sense of solidarity with those on the island. The language barrier could be part of why fighters like Danny Garcia weren't fully embraced when he fought Mauricio Herrera in 2014 in Puerto Rico. Garcia is based out of Philadelphia and speaks little to no Spanish. He has only fought on the island once.
It could also be that fans on the island can tell the difference between a promoter pushing an agenda to gain fans and a fighter who puts in a genuine effort to achieve a connection with a fanbase. One showing up waving a flag and a winning record isn't enough.
One of the island's three current world champions, Jonathan "Bomba" Gonzalez, the holder of the WBO championship at junior flyweight, will challenge for the WBO flyweight title in October in Japan. Gonzalez was born in the Bronx, resides and trains in Puerto Rico, and speaks both English and Spanish. Gonzalez has been and is fully supportive of Berlanga but does highlight the difference between those who live on the island and those who don't.

"To be Puerto Rican, you have to live here," Gonzalez said in an interview with Frontproof Media. "But I can say he's (Berlanga) Puerto Rican. His parents are Puerto Rican. But, to be a Puerto Rican, you have to live here. You have to know what's happening on the island. How is it? What's happening? Who's your Governor? Who's your Mayor?
"He (Berlanga) could represent Puerto Rico. But say, 'Yo, I don't live in Puerto Rico, but I feel for it.' That's great. That's super beautiful. But I support Berlanga. Doesn't matter where he lives."
ISSUES OF LIVING ON THE ISLAND
Puerto Rico has been part of the United States as a colony, commonwealth, or territory since it won control from Spain in 1898. However, when Hurricane Maria ravaged the island in September 2017, it brought to light how little the island's status and trial and tribulations are to those in the United States. Even Puerto Ricans living in the United States might be unaware of the plethora of problems citizens on the island face every day.
Electrical and water outages are common on the island. The two companies in charge of the island's power, Luma Energy and Gerena PR, have constantly had issues maintaining consistent electricity and water for citizens, leading to outages becoming a regular occurrence. Recently, Tropical Storm Ernesto left more than 700,000 people without power.
The healthcare system on the island has been steadily declining. Citizens have had to deal with a lack of specialists and, at worst, have to wait months to gain an appointment. Over 8,600 doctors have left over the last ten years, and more are expected to leave in the future.
Since Hurricane Maria, the island has been put up for sale. Investors of all types, including cryptocurrency traders, have flocked to the island, acquiring residency and buying massive portions of land to gain tax breaks from a law known as Act 60. Most of these properties have been turned into short-term vacation rentals, turning neighborhoods into Airbnb enclaves. These changes in property ownership have displaced many residents, as the prices of homes have gone up so high they have become unaffordable, pushing many out of their hometowns. According to the New York Times, 43 percent of Puerto Ricans live under the federal poverty level, and the three million plus that have called the island their home all their lives do not qualify for the tax breaks the new investors are benefitting from.
PUERTO RICO'S FANBASE
The major issues on the island are not anything sports or Berlanga has control over, yet they highlight why the Brooklyn native isn't entitled to be embraced by those on the island. Berlanga is headed into a fight that isn't only a step up in competition but against boxing's biggest attraction. The Puerto Rican fanbase has always been among the most boisterous and supportive in boxing. For a niche sport like boxing, which seldom receives coverage from mainstream outlets on a consistent basis, having a built-in fanbase can be the difference in the opportunities offered to a fighter.
"There are three top sports in Puerto Rico," Jonathan Gonzalez explained to Frontproof Media. "You can't talk about nothing more than boxing, basketball and baseball. When you talk about a fan base, there are more fans of boxing. Everyone loves Puerto Rican fans because they love their fighters. Everyone wants to be a part of it.
"They want to be loved like Felix 'Tito' Trinidad. That's very hard. There's not going to be another Trinidad. You're not going to get another Trinidad. That will not exist in 20 to 30 years, in my opinion."
Looking at some of the best and most recognizable fighters from Puerto Rico, many are similar to Berlanga. Fighters like Carlos Ortiz lived in New York, and Wilfred Benitez was born in the Bronx. Many will point to Miguel Cotto being born in Providence, Rhode Island, to diminish the value of being born in Puerto Rico. However, what these fighters have in common is that all of them have had fights on the island. Miguel Cotto represented Puerto Rico throughout the amateurs and in the Olympics. The four-division champions' first world title victory against Kelson Pinto in September 2004 took place in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. Benitez became the youngest boxing champion in history when he defeated Antonio Cervantes in Puerto Rico in 1976. Two of Ortiz's most significant wins over Ismael Laguna and Sugar Ramos occurred on the island.
While some view Berlanga's New York roots as an asterisk to his Puerto Rican heritage, others take a more straightforward approach.
"Well, nothing takes away the fact that his blood is Puerto Rican blood, said longtime veteran boxing journalist and founder of Latin Box Sports, Damon Gonzalez to Frontproof Media when asked about Berlanga. "No matter if he's born in Puerto Rico or the Bronx, New York, he is a Puerto Rican. That doesn't, regarding geography and how Puerto Rico may look at him. There are a lot of opinions in what the media and Puerto Rico say about him as an athlete and fighter.
"As a young fighter, as a Brooklyn kid, and a kid growing up in the sport of boxing, every fighter deserves the opportunity. I want to say that point blank, no matter who they are, where they come from, what their background is, race, creed, religion, whatever, no matter who it is, they deserve an opportunity at a shot."
WIN-WIN SITUATION?
How Berlanga performs against Alvarez will be vital to his future. Nobody expects Berlanga to pull off the victory, and many view the fight as a complete mismatch. Should he be competitive against Alvarez while displaying a level of grit and heart, it may endear him to fans in Puerto Rico on and off the island. Regardless of how people feel about his personality or his background, what happens inside the squared circle will always take precedence.
A win over Alvarez would be monumental and considered one of the biggest unexpected upsets in recent history. However, don't expect the government of Puerto Rico to give citizens the day off to celebrate with the Brooklyn fighter in the same manner as when Trinidad returned to the island after his fight with De La Hoya.
There will still be those who will focus on the difference between those who live on the island and those who seemingly wave the flag for clout. Berlanga has played the role of villain throughout the promotion but is noticeably aware of the opportunity before him that can potentially transition him from a boxer to a star.
"I'm a guy that people want to turn on the TV just to see me," Berlanga said on Prime Video's Gloves Off. "They are going to want to see Berlanga. Regardless of whatever they say. They can talk more shit. They're going to say whatever. They're going to pay to see me either win or lose. I don't care. As long as you're paying to watch me, it is what it is. I got to go out there, do my job, win in fashion, and look good. That's my main goal. I want the whole world to know who Berlanga is.
"I want to be that megastar. I'm from New York. I'm Puerto Rican. I'm handsome, and I can fight. I got everything on. I want to become a legend in the sport."
So, is Edgar Berlanga entitled to be embraced by Puerto Rico? The answer is no. But his New York roots shouldn't disqualify him from being given the chance to earn the love of fans from Puerto Rico. Win or lose, how he conducts himself during and after the fight will provide a glimpse into whether his love for Puerto Rico is genuine or an attempt to get fans.
"I've been boxing for 13 years since I was seven," Berlanga stated in 2017. "I'm from Brooklyn, but my parents are from here (Puerto Rico). I feel 100 percent Puerto Rican. My family, almost all of it, lives here on the island, and I want people in Puerto Rico to know that I'm working hard to become another important figure in boxing."
Boxing, like life, is brutal. Nobody is entitled to anything except respect for stepping inside the ring. Puerto Rico and its diaspora won't be easy for Berlanga to win over. But winning tends to simplify complex situations. It can turn shades of grey into black-and-white lines.

The long-awaited rules on crypto assets recently published by the central bank of Mexico have caused quite a stir. A local cryptocurrency exchange’s CEO explains to news.Bitcoin.com that “the impact goes beyond the crypto industry.” Calling it “a disaster,” he asserts that the people within the central bank “have really shown their ignorance” about cryptocurrency.
Also read: Mexico’s Central Bank Publishes ‘Catch-22’ Rules Impacting Crypto Exchanges
Central Bank Showing Ignorance
Much discussion has transpired after the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), the country’s central bank, published a circular detailing crypto-related provisions for the regulation of financial technology institutions (FTIs).
Sebastian Acosta Checa, CEO of local crypto exchange Isbit, shared with news.Bitcoin.com that the circular “says FTIs have to prevent consumers from being ‘exposed’ to the terrible ‘dangerous’ nature of virtual assets on the grounds of their ‘volatility’ and ‘complexity.'” Overall, noting that “In a way, it [Banxico’s circular] is preventing institutions from offering virtual assets to end consumers,” he remarked:
This is a disaster. The people within Banxico have really shown their ignorance about the subject they are trying to regulate.
Mexico’s congress passed a law to regulate fintech companies in March last year, putting Banxico in charge of determining which cryptocurrencies would be authorized to offer to the public by regulated entities. At the time, the crypto community and stakeholders were hopeful that the central bank would introduce positive regulations to foster the fintech sector and the country’s economy as a whole.
However, when Banxico finally published the circular, it “essentially stipulated that they wouldn’t authorize any cryptocurrency to be offered by regulated financial companies,” Tomas Alvarez, CEO of local crypto exchange Volabit, recently told news.Bitcoin.com.
Restriction But Not Prohibition
Mexican crypto exchange Bitso described in a blog post that “the circular is directed at banks and fintech [companies] regarding their operations with cryptocurrencies.” The exchange noted that “Banxico mentions that it seeks to take advantage of the use of the technology of these cryptocurrencies as long as they are used for internal operations of financial institutions,” emphasizing:
This does not mean that operations with cryptocurrencies are prohibited.
Alvarez calls it a catch-22 situation since the law requires crypto exchanges to become regulated financial institutions. “However, once you obtain this license you would not have the authorization to list any cryptocurrencies, making it legally impossible to operate an exchange in Mexico with the fintech law in place,” he noted.
Interpretation of ‘Consumer’
Some of the rules Banxico imposes are not clear, however. Acosta Checa told news.Bitcoin.com:
Since the circular seems to have been written in a rush and without careful analysis and basic competence, it leaves to the interpretation of certain important things.
For example, in his interpretation, “financial institutions and foreign trade companies are not a ‘consumer’ and thus can operate freely” with his exchange. Isbit has already “shifted gears to serving businesses, corporations and institutions (which are allowed to hold virtual assets in their balance sheets according to the previous bill published March 9, 2018). Thus we will not shut down or lose our most valuable customers,” the CEO emphasized.
Nonetheless, Acosta Checa understands that, under the new rules, if his exchange wants to “continue serving final ‘consumers/the public’ we will need to appeal to the Amparo Law and ask a court to suspend the application of the circular published by the Bank of Mexico (not the entire bill passed by the previous government administration on March 9, 2018).” He clarified:
According to the March 9th bill passed by the [Mexican] congress, we have permission to operate with ‘consumers’ till September.
Damaging the Economy
The CEO of Isbit believes that the new crypto asset rules will negatively impact the country’s economy as a whole. He explained that “Mexico is the endpoint to the biggest remittance corridor in the world (second largest population of migrants), the 6th most visited country by tourists and [is the] country with the largest number of free trade agreements.” Therefore, the country “has a lot to gain from the industrial application of virtual assets (activos virtuales) to facilitate free trade, tourism and financial inclusion,” Acosta Checa detailed, concluding:
The impact goes beyond the crypto industry. I believe it damages the economy as a whole.

UFC Calgary Results: Eddie Alvarez Vs Dustin Poirier, Jose Aldo Vs Jeremy Stephens
New Post has been published on https://latestnews2018.com/ufc-calgary-results-eddie-alvarez-vs-dustin-poirier-jose-aldo-vs-jeremy-stephens/
UFC Calgary Results: Eddie Alvarez Vs Dustin Poirier, Jose Aldo Vs Jeremy Stephens
Dustin Poirier continued working his way towards a shot at the UFC lightweight champion by defeating Eddie Alvarez via second-round TKO in the main event of UFC Calgary. Poirier earned some vindication, as a previous fight between him and Alvarez last May was ruled a no-contest when Alvarez landed two illegal knees while Poirier was grounded. It’s Poirier’s third straight stoppage victory over a former champion, having defeated Anthony Pettis and Justin Gaethje in his previous fights.
The first round was competitive with both fighters scoring. Poirier controlled the distance early on and peppered Alvarez with his jab. Alvarez responded with some nice body shots and also landed a spinning back-fist. They traded leg kicks as the fight stayed on the feet. Poirier did some showboating after stuffing a couple takedown attempts by Alvarez and continuing to work his boxing. It was a close round and either fighter could’ve won it.
In the second round, Alvarez pushed forward and forced the clinch early, but Poirier jumped up for a guillotine choke. Alvarez remained calm and survived, forcing Poirier to let go of the choke at the risk of tiring out his arms. Alvarez took control and maintained top position, taking Poirier’s back and locking up a neck-crank. Poirer was able to survive, but Alvarez moved to full mount and started landing some shots. Controversy arose between these two once again, as Alvarez threw and illegal 12-to-6 elbow that landed on Poirier’s shoulder. Even though it didn’t do much damage to Poirer, it was still an illegal technique and referee Marc Goddard was forced to take away Alvarez’s top position. With the fight back in the center of the octagon, Poirier landed a crisp combination and landed a stiff knee that wobbled Alvarez. Alvarez stumbled back to the fence and Poirier poured it one with a diverse volume of strikes, landing punches and knees before flooring Alvarez with an elbow, forcing the referee to stop the fight at the 4:19 mark.
In his post-fight interview, Poirier made his case for a title shot. He undoubtedly deserves a championship fight, but the logjam at the top of the lightweight division makes it somewhat murky. Current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is expected to defend his title against former champion Conor McGregor at some point this year, with reports saying the UFC is looking to book that fight in October or December. Poirier has every right to sit and wait for that situation to sort itself out so he could face the winner for the title. But former interim champion Tony Ferguson is currently recovering from an injury, so depending on the result of Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor, it wouldn’t be a surprise is Poirier had to fight Ferguson before getting a title shot.
In the co-main event, former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo ended a two-fight losing streak with a first-round TKO of Jeremy Stephens. It was Aldo’s first stoppage win since August 2013, and his first non-title fight since June 2009. The fight was highly entertaining for as long as it lasted. Stephens pushed forward and looked to have Aldo hurt early, but he survived and started throwing power shots of his own. Aldo earned Stephens’ respect and opened up a cut near his eye, stopping Stephens’ trademark heavy pressure. Aldo then landed a vicious body shot that sent Stephens to the canvas and he rained down some ground-and-pound before the referee stepped in at the 4:19 mark. After back-to-back losses to current featherweight champion Max Holloway, Aldo earned his first win in more than two years. Stephens had a three-fight winning streak entering this fight and likely would’ve entered the title conversation had he won the fight.

Russian Bombshell Dasha Mart Sizzles In Taped-On Mosaic Swimsuit For Stunning New Photos
Dasha Mart often stuns her 1.8 million Instagram fans with eye-popping photos, but her most recent update might one of her most daring yet.
On Tuesday, February 11, the Russian bombshell took to the popular social media app to share a couple of snapshots from a recent photo shoot she did in which she wore a swimsuit that was taped onto her body.
Mart rocked a one-piece bathing suit that is made entirely from metallic tape. The majority of the suit was gold with some blue and green details. The tape was cut into different geometric shapes and sizes, which combined to create a mosaic on the model’s body. All the little pieces were taped to her torso, creating a perfectly shaped swimsuit that covered all the important bits.
In her caption, Mart revealed that this photo shoot was part of the Black Tape Project, the brainchild of photographer Joel Alvarez. His body art project has been featured on Vogue, TeenVogue, GQ, Harper’s Bazaars, Maxim, Swim Week, NYFW and LAFW, according to the Black Tape Project’s Instagram page.
For the photos, Mart struck different poses in front of an intricate monument, possible a sand castle, that towered in the background. According to the geotag, the photo shoot took place in Key Biscayne in Miami, Florida.
In the first shot, the camera was closer to the model as she posed with her legs slightly apart and hip to one side. Mart placed on hand on her hip while taking the other hand to her head. Her eyes were closed as she tilted her head slightly forward with her lips parted.
The second picture showed her from a distance, capturing her entire body in the frame. Mart placed one leg in front of the other as she took both hands to her head. The blond bombshell tilted her head back this time, facing the sky. Her eyes were once again closed in a similar facial expression as they first shot.
The post was successful with Mart’s fans. In under a day of being published, the photos have attracted more than 27,000 likes and upwards of 400 comments. Users of the social media platform took to the comments section to praise her beauty and to share their thoughts about the photo shoot.
“So stunning,” one user wrote, trailing the comment with a few fire and a heart-eyes emoji.
“This is spectacular!” replied another one.
“Sensational,” a third one chimed in, including a blue heart and a few shooting star emoji at the end of the message.

Mexico’s Alvarez hits back at De Boer jabs
Edson Alvarez didn’t want to hear Frank De Boer’s criticism of his play.
Mexico international Edson Alvarez was unhappy with Ajax youth coach and club legend Ronald de Boer‘s comments about the 21-year-old lacking the creativity to play as a central midfielder against certain teams.
De Boer suggested that he wasn’t yet sure whether Alvarez is best suited to playing at center-back or in midfield, questioning whether the Mexican possesses enough invention in games in which Ajax is dominating possession.
“Against Valencia or Chelsea, which are good teams and have quality players, Edson could play as a midfielder,” said De Boer, speaking in Spanish, in an interview with ESPN. “But when Ajax has the ball, maybe he doesn’t have the necessary creativity; he’s not very creative in my opinion, but I have to see how he develops.”
Alvarez has become a regular in central midfield under Erik ten Hag since moving from Club America in the summer and scored on Tuesday in his Champions League group stage debut in Ajax’s 3-0 victory over Lille.
“I don’t know [De Boer],” Alvarez told ESPN after the game. “I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting him, but for some reason he said it. I’m focused on what the coaching staff tells me. I don’t think he had to say that because we are a family and we should look out for each other.”
Alvarez played as a center-back, right-back and eventually in central midfield for Club America and has featured in all three positions for the Mexican national team.
“I started playing at my last club as a central defender and then they saw qualities to play me in midfield, I think I can play both positions,” Alvarez said. “I think that God gave me the gift of playing football and the joy of playing football.”
Ajax meet rival PSV Eindhoven on Sunday, with Alvarez set to go up against Mexico teammate Erick Gutierrez, should he recover from injury in time.
