Hellcheer 'Alien' AU - gimme the facts!
omg you're using your insider information against me!
based primarily off of the new Romulus movie (no spoilers), this AU takes place at a space station where the entire Party is sent to begin repairing a out-of-commission workplace. Chrissy and Eddie have history but aren't together
either Mike or Will is the first victim of the face-hugger (and El is the android/synthetic). Eddie's first thought is "we gotta get out of here" but Chrissy won't let them leave without everyone and they're all scattered to different parts of the station.
Eddie very much goes protective mode, refusing to let Chrissy out of his sight and probably throwing himself into at least one stupid situation in an attempt to save her. Definitely gets injured.
Billy forces Max (and maybe Lucas) into an escape pod and sends them back planetside (where I think Steve and Robin are probably playing ground control tbh). It's the only escape pod, so the only other way to escape is the ship they came in on.
In true Alien fashion, pretty much everyone is gonna die, but Chrissy will get Eddie into a cryopod and save his life before she goes Final Girl and whoops xenomorph ass.
send me a prompt and I'll make up five facts about it!

tw ed mention, hurt/comfort
Chrissy pushes the door of the girl’s washroom open quietly, her brows pinched as she wobbles over to the sinks.
Staring at herself, she sniffles.
No, stop it, now’s not the time.
She wipes at her flushed cheeks and shoulders her backpack off, setting it on the sink before searching inside.
Her eyes are welling with tears as she pulls out her favourite lipstick, shakily uncapping the tube with cold fingers, twisting it until the nude rose peeks out and she brings it to her lips.
Remember, you’re more worth more than numbers.
It’s hard to convince herself of that when all she can see are the flaws on her body.
She rubs the colour onto her mouth by pressing her lips together, watching a tear gather on her lower lashes.
The door opens with a small bang and she jumps, eyes widening as she looks towards the door in the mirror and spots a familiar face.
Heather’s easy smile fades as she spots Chrissy with her flushed face and wet doe eyes.
“Hey,” Heather says as the door closes behind her and she goes over to the cheerleader, her thin brows furrowed and voice full of concern as she gently asks, “Chriss, what’s wrong?”
That simple question is enough for Chrissy’s face to twist with emotion and then she’s really crying, her hands going to cover her face as she feels Heather’s manicured hands on her shoulders, pulling her in for a hug.
She goes easily, sliding her hands up and around Heather’s shoulders while pressing her face into the brunette’s neck, crying as quietly as she can. Sharp little gasps shake her body as she tries to muffle her sobs, but the soothing hand petting at her hair makes it hard.
“It’s okay, I got you,” Heather whispers, “Let it all out.”
Their friendship isn’t new, but the closeness is. Once she had finally gathered up the courage to break up with Jason a few months ago, Heather had been there to comfort and support her the entire way, always ready to make her laugh or defend her at a moment’s notice. It was so nice, and Chrissy admired Heather’s ability to be sharp with people, never shying from speaking her mind or raising her voice when needed. At the same time, Heather knew when to be soft and sweet, ready to encourage or help. They grew closer and even confided in one another about things they wouldn’t tell anyone else, sworn to secrecy with a kiss.
It had been a simple peck, short and sweet and meant to be platonic, but Chrissy had felt a stirring and knew it wasn’t just friendship to her.
Still, she keeps those feelings to herself - scared to lose Heather if she ever found them out.
It takes a bit, but Chrissy begins to calm down, her cries now muffled down to sniffles and embarrassment. Crying always made her feel embarrassed and ashamed, but Heather never judged her for it.
She pulls away slowly, opening her eyes to see a familiar soft smile on Heather’s red lips.
“Feel better?” Heather murmurs, lifting her brows.
Chrissy gives a small shrug, because she can’t say yes or no for sure, but squeaks gently as Heather quickly leans in and kisses at her tears, whisking them away from her under eyes with her lips. Chrissy’s eyes widen as her heart skips a beat, lifting a hand to her face to touch the warmth of her cheek as Heather smiles wide.
They stare at each other until Chrissy laughs gently, then they’re giggling together.
Heather straightens her uniform for her and smooths her hair, brushes her bangs out of her blue eyes carefully, and warmth fills Chrissy’s chest where it had felt empty and cold only moments ago.
“Pretty as ever,” Heather hums with a soft gaze, tilting her head towards the door, “C’mon, I’ll walk you to class.”
“Sure - just, um, gimme a sec?” Chrissy whispers, brows knitting a little before Heather nods in understanding.
“I’ll be outside, take your time.”
Chrissy watches her go, waiting until the door is closed again before turning to the mirror.
And there, under her eyes and across her cheeks, are red lipstick kisses. Heather’s affection and care has been pressed into her skin and Chrissy smiles at her reflection, feeling her cheeks warm the longer she admires them.
She hates to wipe them away but she does, taking comfort in knowing that she won’t be able to wipe the memory away as easily as the lipstick.

I’m gonna need Chrissy & Steve for #10!!!! Gimme the Christmas feels!

Tumblr media
Christmas Day, 1985
It had taken a couple years, but Steve was finally starting to enjoy Christmas again. He had hazy memories of bright Christmas mornings when he was a kid, but by the first grade, he’d been attending his father’s corporate business party. It was a big, fancy event at a high-end catering hall where the tables had ice sculptures and the utensils were real silver. Steve couldn’t imagine how much money the company blew on it every year. His mother practically disappeared for the whole month of December to plan it and make sure everything was perfect. Friends and family were always invited, but more than anything, it was a chance for his dad to suck up to other corporate assholes under the guise of holiday cheer.
Steve didn’t hate it—at least, he hated it less than the other events he got dragged to. There were always a couple other kids there, a handful he saw every year. The kids’ table slowly became the teens’ table, and then they’d sneak outside with a couple bottles of wine to wait out the party. It was fun, but he never really enjoyed himself; it didn’t make sense even in his own head.
The Wheelers had been the ones to break the cycle. Once Steve and Nancy were official dating, Mrs. Wheeler invited him over for Christmas dinner. Steve’s parents hadn’t been thrilled, but his absence at the party would give them an excuse to brag about how he was in a “serious relationship” with a nice girl.
It had been a good Christmas, right out of one of those old paintings of a picture-perfect family around the table. The Wheelers were nice, the food was great, and it was all just so much less pretentious than what he was used to. He actually enjoyed it, and things started to make more sense.
The next year, he couldn’t go back. The problem was that he didn’t have a girlfriend as an excuse anymore. In the end, he lied about being sick so he could skip the corporate party and go to the Henderson house instead. That dinner was way bigger than the year before—Dustin and his mom, Chrissy and her dad, even Hopper and Eleven. The two of them didn’t come together, exactly. Dustin just told his mom that El was a friend from school whose parents were out of town, and Claudia hadn’t batted an eye. Everyone squeezed around the table, taking second helpings of everything and, as Steve sat squashed between Chrissy and Dustin, he hoped Christmas would be like that every year.
Well. That Christmas wish hadn’t come true.
This year, Steve’s parents made it crystal clear that they were dragging him to the party whether he liked it or not. He’d pulled the girlfriend card again, hoping to spend Christmas with Chrissy, but it didn’t work this time. After twelve days of Christmas arguments and a ton of tense negotiations, they’d come to a compromise: Steve was coming to the party, but he was allowed to bring Chrissy as his date.
“I really don’t mind,” Chrissy said in the car, after he’d apologized for the hundredth time for putting her through this. “Last year was different for you. This year will be different for me.”
“Yeah,” Steve scoffed, straightening his tie, “if ‘different’ means listening to a bunch of snobby assholes brag about their lives until you want to drill a hole in your head.’”
Chrissy reached over, grabbing one of his hands from the steering wheel and gently stroking the back of his hand. “Well then, we’ll just have to hide in a corner and make fun of everyone until it’s time to go home.”
It pulled a smile out of Steve, even though he was still annoyed. He knew he was being overdramatic. They would be able to sneak out after an hour or two, but until then, he wanted to shield Chrissy from as much of the pettiness and cruelty that he could.
The Harrington house was decked out of Christmas with pin-straight lights lining the roof and an enormous wreath on the front door. It was pretty, but Steve couldn’t look at anything but Chrissy as she climbed out of the car.
She’d been trying to calm him down the whole ride over, but Steve knew that she was nervous too. Everything was wearing was new, from her red lipstick to her emerald dress, the skirt shiny with a complicated gold pattern. When he’d gone to pick her up from her house, the sight of her had knocked the wind right out of him. Just thinking about all the time and effort and money she’d put into her appearance to impress his parents and their friends made him that much angrier about the whole thing.
He grabbed her hand as they walked up the driveway, holding it tight so her fingers would stop trembling. “You’re gorgeous, you know that?”
Chrissy’s pink cheeks flushed darker as she rolled her eyes. “Thank you. Again.”
“You’re welcome, again. Hey, by the way—have I mentioned that you’re fucking gorgeous?”
That got him a laugh, along with a shove as they hurried up the front steps and into the house.
Inside, the decorations were just as neat as they were outside. Evergreen was wrapped around the banister and lining the side tables alongside towering red candles. They ventured into the living room, where the bough continued along the balcony until it disappeared behind the oversized Christmas tree in the corner. All the ornaments were shades of white and silver, right up to the shining star on top.
“They’re home, right?” Chrissy asked uncertainly.
The house was quiet except for the instrumental music drifting from the stereo, but Steve waved off Chrissy’s concern.
“They’ll be back. They probably wandered down the block exchange gifts with the mayor or whatever.” He gestured for her to sit on the couch while he headed to the stereo cabinet. “ I don’t know why they leave this shit playing when they’re not home. I can turn it—"
“No, no! It’s fine. I love The Nutcracker.” Chrissy was wearing a tiny smile, perched on the very edge of the couch cushion. “Reminds me of Mom.”
Steve pulled his hand back from the stereo. He sat down next to her and wrapped an arm around her shoulder, easing her into a more comfortable position fully on the couch. She leaned into his side, and Steve watched the string lights twinkle in her eyes as she thought.
“Honestly, I barely remember it,” she said softly. “It’s one of those things where it’s like—I don’t know if I actually remember, or if I’ve just thought about it so much that I think I remember, you know? I was maybe…four and a half? Mom was already sick, but it was before things got too bad. I begged them to take me to The Nutcracker for like weeks.”
“Seriously?” Steve squinted at her. “You begged them to go to the NYC Ballet?”
“Oh God, no!” She giggled and lifted a hand to cover her mouth. “No, it was a local show. Just a bunch of kids, really, but it didn’t stop me from becoming obsessed. I listened to that tape until it broke. Told Mom I was gonna be a ballerina.”
Chrissy giggled again, but it was sadder this time. Steve didn’t need her to fill in the gaps. Her mom’s health had gotten worse, and Chrissy’s life became of a blue of hospitals and rental houses. Dance classes weren’t really on the table.
The music shifted into the next section, something even Steve could almost recognize. “This one’s…?”
“Waltz of the Flowers,” Chrissy supplied.
“Right. I knew that.”
“Sure you did, baby.”
She smirked at him and Steve pouted despite the warmth that filled his chest. He stood up abruptly, shaking out his suit jacket with a flourish, then held out his hand. Chrissy raised an eyebrow, bemused.
“What are you doing?”
“Come on.” He pulled her to her feet and led her to the middle of the living room floor. “What we are doing is dancing.”
“Steve—”
He ignored her protest and lifted his arm to force her into a twirl. Chrissy wobbled in her high heels and Steve caught her against his chest as she collapsed in a fit of laughter. He grinned and pressed a kiss to her hair, his free hand finding hers and weaving their fingers together.
“Okay, uh—step back with this foot,” he instructed, nudging her right with his left, “and now sideways with this one, then together. Then you come forward with this one—yeah, there you go—”
It was a clunky rhythm, both of them laughing as they struggled to find their footing. They were stepping more than they were dancing, the music barely a suggestion at that point. It took Chrissy’s brain a minute to catch up, but when it did, she tripped over herself as she looked up at him.
“Steven Harrington,” she said in awe, “are you…? Since when can you waltz?”
He could feel his face turning red, but tried to focus on keeping Chrissy upright as she struggled. “Well, ‘waltz’ is a pretty generous word…”
“Steve.”
“Fine, I—kinda. When I was little, my cousin had this wedding and I was the ring bearer and—it was this whole thing. She made everyone in the bridal party do this opening dance. I sucked and uh—it does not look like I got any better.”
He chuckled, but to his surprise, Chrissy pulled him to a stop. She looked at him in earnest, making sure she had his undivided attention before she spoke.
“You’re amazing, Steve. And I love you.”
“I know.”
Chrissy narrowed her eyes at him, annoyed and somehow still even happier than she’d been before. She tucked her lips in to hide her smile, then closed the distance between them so she could rest her head on his chest.
They swayed on the spot, forgoing the waltz and the complicated footwork. With Chrissy’s head on his chest, Steve could almost feel her humming along to the music. For a few minutes, Steve let himself believe that his parents weren’t coming home. They’d gone to some other party and he was staying here with Christine. They’d dance in the living room until she inevitably dragged him off to dinner—with their friends, with her dad, or maybe just the two of them. There wouldn’t be any sneaking or snide comments or arguments. It was Christmas, he had Christine in his arms, and he was going to enjoy himself.

i loved this chapter! although the angst at the end destroyed me because i really thought they would get together again OMG you're edging us andy 😭
And by the look on Robin’s face every time she sees Chrissy, you know that she is feeling just the same.
ROBIN AND CHRISSY ROBIN AND CHRISSY 😭😭❤️
“Heather,” you mumble, raising your brows at her, “how about we talk about you and pizza guy.”
HEATHER AND ARGYLE?? 😫
Heather smiles brighter, she bites her lip and leans back, “maybe,” she grins, “I mean he just asked me to be his girlfriend the other day,” she says casually as she looks down at her nails.
OH MY GOD??? girl im lowkey jealous tbh
Is that how your friends always felt when you would leave them just to be with Steve?
YEAH. the feeling when your friend can't hang out with you because she's going out with her dumbass boyfriend only for him to dump her later and you have to keep in the "I told you so" 😭
“Let me make you a real drink, baby.”
let me give you a real punch baby
You put your hand on his chest and push him away, “you’re not slick, stop trying to get in my pants.”
yes billy you're being cringy rn 😭
You look down at the mixed drink, hesitating before you give in and take it from his hand.
GIRL DONT TOUCH IT DO YOU NOT VALUE LIFE
“Are you okay?” He chuckles, stepping closer to pat your back gently, “do you need me to make you feel better?”
PFFFFF TAKE A HINT
“Leave her alone, Hargrove.”
not him too
He chuckles and finally walks away, passing by Steve only to halt beside him. Billy stares him down, another chuckle of amusement falls from his lips. He slaps Steve’s shoulder, “lighten up, Harrington. Maybe you’ll get lucky tonight.”
a little birdie told me that steve was a bad lover so i don't think so...
“Or both?” You giggle, “Eddie and I do both sometimes.”
girl... no words 😭
Chrissy is drunk, not drunk on alcohol, drunk on something else.
WE WERE IN THE BACKSEAT DRUNK ON SOMETHING STRONGER THAN THE DRINKS IN THE BAR!!!
Robin’s hair is short, her curls are messy, her bangs are long and they need to be cut, Chrissy can’t help but raise her hand to brush them away from her eyes so she can see her beautiful eyes.
AWWWWWWWWWW 😭🫶
They all expect to walk in on a very drunk you. Because, usually it takes a lot to convince you to join a game of truth or dare, never have i ever and let alone spin the bottle. You don’t like kissing strangers or risking the possibility to kiss someone you cannot stand.
oh fuck no 😭
“No thanks,” Heather snorts as she crosses her arms over her chest, “you still need to grow some, Hagan.”
OOOHHHHH BURNNN
When Billy pulls away, he gives Hailey a pat on the cheek. She giggles at him and licks her lips as she sits back in her place.
ew
“This is gonna appear in my nightmare tonight,” Steve whispers to you.
literally!! steve gets me
Billy kisses you roughly – it’s not as bad as the kiss you have had with Ray but you still can’t shake the fact that you are kissing him. At least, his lips are soft. They taste like strawberry – probably thanks to Hailey and her strawberry lip gloss that she always wears over her red lipstick.
omg imagine the germs...
Billy chuckles, he looks at you through hooded eyes and leans closer, “that made me really fucking hard,” he whispers.
congratulations ...? 😭
“You don’t have to,” he whispers to you, but you are already moving closer to him.
NAAAAH GIMME THE DRAMA
When he does open his eyes and he sees the look on your face, the shock in your eyes, the emotions that are still there, the love. He knows, he still has a chance.
OH MY GOD 🫨🫨🫨🫨
“Shut it, blondie,” Heather snaps at him.
YES HEATHERPOO
“I’m sorry for taking him away from you. I-I saw the way you two looked at each other back there. I guess, I just now realized what I’ve ruined.”
NANCY REDEMPTION ARC
You shrug, “you just kissed your ex girlfriend in front of your other ex girlfriend.”
yup... a little mess girlie
He cups your cheeks and leans down to kiss you. He needs more of what he just had.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA IM- I- IM-
He destroyed too much.
i mean... yeah kinda 😭
“You can’t just kiss me after everything!” You snap at him and push past him, walking away from him.
THE ANGST COMES BACK OMG 😭😭😭
well... im off to read smut now so 🤭
I'M SO HAPPY YOU LIKED THIS CHAPTER SO MUCH!!! 💕
Robin & Chrissy are literally the cutest couple ever, I'm so happy that I can finally write about them
All your reactions to Billy are killing me 😭
And omg, it's really the worst when your friends keep dropping you for their shitty boyfriends 😭
AND YES! the angst comes back but tbh.... it won't be angsty between Steve and reader but between her and a certain someone 👀
I HOPE YOU WILL LIKE THE SMUT

How she was convinced to go into some alternate dimension called ‘The Upside Down’ with Eddie, Robin, Steve, Nancy, and Dustin, she will never know. But, once Dustin, with the help of Nancy making it way more simplified, explained it, Y/N knew she had to help in any shape or form she could. She knew the deaths of Chrissy and Fred shook Hawkins to its core, so whatever she could do to help stop this monster from killing anyone else, she would.
“Okay, Eddie, Dustin, you two stay together, distract the bats, and the four of us will go into the house and go straight for Vecna.”
Y/N looked at Nancy, her hands on her hips. “No way in hell am I splitting from Eddie, Wheeler. Not happening.” Nancy looked between them all before landing her eyes on Y/N. Eddie grabbed her hand, tangling their fingers together. “Baby, it’ll all be okay, yeah? You go with them, so I know you’re safe, and I’ll go with Henderson, and we’ll all be safe.” Eddie kissed the crown of her head.
“Fine, but I’m not happy about this.”
Nancy began explaining the plan. From the original Hawkins, Max, Lucas, and Erica would distract Vecna, Eddie and Dustin would lure the bats away and when Vecna almost catches Max, the other four go in for the kill, or as Robin liked to constantly say ‘flambe’. Everyone grabbed their necessary tools, going to locate the gate.
“Here, now, let’s go.”
One by one, they flipped through to the Upside Down, landing on the mattress in Eddie’s trailer. “I would’ve preferred you on it undressed, but I guess this will do, pretty girl.” Eddie teased, making Y/N break out into a smile. “Keep it in your pants, Munson.” Steve looked at him pointedly.
“Alright, let’s go. Eddie, Dustin, good luck.”
Y/N turned towards Eddie, her eyes softening as he looked at her. “Shh, baby, it’s gonna be alright, I promise, yeah?” Y/N nods. Eddie looks down, lifting his guitar pick necklace over his head and placing it around Y/N’s neck, also taking one of his rings and placing it on her finger. “Keep this safe for me, yeah? I’ll see you soon, sweetheart.”
Y/N quickly kissed him, savoring the feeling of his lips on hers. “I love you.” She mumbled.
“I love you more, sweetheart. Now, go kick some ass, yeah?”
Y/N smiled, joining the other three as they ventured toward the house. Once they got inside, she looked around in wonder, her eyes catching on the vines covering the floor and the walls. “Whoa.” She mumbled. After a few minutes, one by one, the group got tangled in the vines, being trapped and choked against the wall.
“Agh!”
They finally were released, booking it up the stairs, seeing that Vecna had become distracted. One by one, they began to attack. Nancy fires bullets after Robin, Steve and Y/N threw bottles at him, lighting the monster on fire.
“Go, go, go!”
The four ran down the stairs and out of the house. “Come on!” Y/N shouted as she took the lead, running faster than she thinks she ever had before. She only had one goal. Get to Eddie. Keep Eddie safe.
As they got closer to the trailer park, the screams of Dustin Henderson made the girl sick to her stomach. The wails of ‘Eddie!’ coming out of his mouth made her sprint faster. “Dustin! Eddie!” She could see them from here, Eddie lying on the floor as Dustin kneeled next to him.
“Y/N, hurry!”
Dustin’s cry called to her as she quickly approached. Once she got close enough to see the damage, sobs broke out of her lungs. “No, no! Eddie!” Y/N got down on her knees next to him. “Hi, baby.” He mumbled, looking up at her, blood covering the left side of his face. “Eddie, hey, shh, you’re gonna be alright. We’re gonna get you to a hospital, okay?” Y/N looked to Dustin who nodded.
“Gimme a second, okay?”
Y/N nodded, laying him back down. “Okay, my love, okay. Shh.. Just, whatever you do, don’t let go.” Eddie smiled up at the two who sat on each side of him, his head laying over Dustin’s knee. ”I didn’t run away this time, right?” Y/N sobbed, wiping her eyes.
“No, baby, no you didn’t. You did so well, love. My brave boy.”
She smiled down at him, cupping his cheek. “My brave, brave boy.” Eddie looked at Dustin. “You’re gonna have to look after those little sheep for me, alright?” Dustin shook his head, clearly not wanting to hear Eddie’s suggestion. Eddie looked back to Y/N, his hand gripping the one of hers that wasn’t cupping his face.
“I think I’m actually going to graduate, baby.” He looked back at Dustin. “I think it’s my year, Henderson.” Y/N cried more, her sobs echoing around them. “I love you, m-man.” Dustin hits his fist lightly on Eddie’s chest. “I-I love you too.”
Eddie’s eyes found Y/N’s and he smiled. “My gorgeous, gorgeous girl.” Y/N choked out a sob, leaning against the hand that was cupping her cheek. “I love you so much, you know that?” Y/N nods, kissing his forehead. “I love you so much more, my brave boy. You did so well.” She mumbled, laying her head in the crook of his neck, not batting an eye to the blood covering him. “‘m so proud of you, Eds. You did so well.” Eddie’s hand moved to the back of her head, bringing her down towards him with the last bit of strength he could muster, and kissed her softly. Y/N kissed back, her salty tears mixing in with her lip gloss and the taste of cigarettes.
A sob ripped its way through her throat as she felt his lips grow cold against her own, feeling his hand slide down her face, but still staying up to hold her face in the palm of his hand.
The four sat there for a while, Nancy consoling Dustin while Steve held Y/N against his chest, Robin rubbing her back. Y/N’s hand holding onto the guitar pick that lay on her neck, the coolness of his ring on her finger tingling her lips. She muttered to herself, staring at his lifeless body as she cried.
“I love you, Eddie. My brave boy.”

78 The Rainmaker (97)
79 *Batman & Robin (97)

144 All is Bright (13)
145 Defending Your Life (91)

148 Reindeer Games (00) what did I say about Affleck??!? WHAT DID I SAY
149 Palm Springs (20)
150 Happiest Season (20)
151 *Metropolitan (90) it’s definitely a Christmas movie
152 Black Christmas (74)
THEATRE:HOME - 2:150 (thanks pandemic)
I usually separate out docs and fiction, but I watched almost no documentaries this year (with the exception of Dick Johnston). Reality is real enough.
TV Series
01 - BoJack Horseman (final season) - Pretty damned poignant finish to the show, replete with actual consequences for our reformed bad boy protagonist (which is more than you can say for most antiheroes of Peak TV).
02 - *Hello Ladies - I enjoy the pure awkwardness of seeing Stephen Merchant try to perform being a Regular Person, but ultimately this show tips him too far towards a nasty, Ricky Gervais-lite sort of persona. Perhaps he was always best as a cameo appearance, or lip synching with wild eyes while Chrissy Teigen giggles?
03 - Olive Kittredge - a rough watch by times. I read the book as well, later in the year. Frances Mcdormand was the best, possibly the only, casting option for the flinty lead. One episode tips into thriller territory, which is a shock.
04 - *The Wire S3, S4, S5 - lockdown culture! It was interesting to rewatch this, then a few months later go through an enormous, culture-level reappraisal of cop-centred narratives.
05 - Forever - a Maya Rudolph/Fred Armisen joint that coasts on the charm of its leads. The premise is OK, but I wasn’t left wanting any more at the end.
06 - *Catastrophe - a rewatch when my partner decided he wanted to see it, too!
07 - Red Oak - resolutely “OK” steaming dramedy, relied heavily on some pretty obvious cues to get across its 1980s setting.
08 - Little Fires Everywhere - gulped this one down while in 14-day isolation, delicious! Every 90s suburban mom had that SUV, but not all of them had the requisite **secrets**
09 - The Great - fun historical comedy/drama! Costumes: lush. Actors: amusing. Race-blind casting: refreshing!
10 - The Crown S4 - this is the season everyone lost their everloving shit for, since it’s finally recent enough history that a fair chunk of the viewing audience is liable to recall it happening.
11 - Ted Lasso - we resisted this one for a while (thought I did enjoy the ad campaign for NBC sports (!!) that it was based on). My view is that its best point was the comfort that the men on the show have (or develop, throughout the season) with the acknowledgement and sharing of their own feelings. Masculinity redux.
12 - Moonbase 8 - Goodnatured in a way that makes you certain they will be crushed.
13 - The Good Lord Bird - Ethan Hawke is really aging into the character actor we always hoped he would be!
14 - Hollywood - frothy wish-fulfillment alternate history. I think the show would have been improved immeasurably by skipping the final episode.

Chapter 20 - Punch
As Buck moved aside to let the girls inside, Rae heard footsteps coming down the stairs. Her brother appeared from around the corner wearing a flannel shirt and a Stetson. Dally climbed onto one of the stools and reached across the bar to help himself to a cup and a fountain drink. Buck shook his head at his friend, but led his own sister into the kitchen to put the casserole dish away.
"Hey, Dal," Rae greeted him, lifting herself onto the stool next to him. He passed her the cup and she took a good swig of it.
“School okay?” he asked her after he’d finished his soda.
"Yeah, I guess," she answered, shrugging her backpack off her shoulders. She tossed it onto the table behind them. “I got this girl on my back, though. Some Soc.”
“She givin’ you trouble? Do I need to, ya know, have a talk with her?”
“No, no-nothin’ like that.” She sighed. “I dunno. She’s like, uh, bein’ nice to me? But I can’t figure out why.” Rae snorted. “She looks pretty stuck up, if you ask me, all red hair and perfect skin.” She tucked her hair behind her ear. He turned to say something to her, but paused, whatever he was about to say lost on his tongue.
“Rae Lee Winston,” Dally reprimanded her, as he took her chin in his hands and forcefully turning her head to the side.  “What the hell is that?”
Ah, he’d finally noticed the earrings.
“Well-,”
“Are you out of your damn mind? Who did this?”
“Chrissy did,” Carrie answered for her, walking back into the room. He released his sister’s chin and focused on her friend. “When they slept over. It’s alright, she’s done it before. Just think of it as a late birthday present.” She held out her hand to Dally, whose eyebrows lifted so high, Rae was sure they’d leave his head entirely. “I’m Carrie Merrill. A pleasure to meet the famous Dallas Winston.”
He stared at her hand in surprise for a good, few, silent seconds, but eventually looked past her to Buck, who was also coming out of the kitchen.
“D’ya know what your sister has gotten into?”
“Kid does what she wants.” Buck shrugged. “Be thankful she didn’t come back with purple hair,  knowin’ that Chrissy girl.” Dally looked back at Rae’s ears and held up his hands in defeat.
“Fine, whatever,” he relented. “Just make sure it don’t get infected.”
“I know,” she assured him. "Anyway, where am I goin’ tonight?"
“Ain’t had a chance to think about it yet. Maybe you could stay here?” Her brother looked towards Buck, who cringed a little at the thought.
“Ya really want a kid to be sleepin’ in a noisy bar?”
"Well,” Carried piped up. “Mom and Dad are leavin’ tonight to go out of town for a few days. She could stay at my house through the weekend.” Rae turned to her friend.
“Are you sure?” she asked, an uneasy feeling gripping her chest. “I don’t want my dad to come after you too. He’s already seen ya with me and-”
“Rae,” Carrie interrupted, laying a hand on her shoulder. “We got a deadbolt. We’ll be fine.”
"I guess that’d be alright," Dally said. "No parties. And get me your number in case I need to get ahold of ya’ll." She nodded and went off to get some paper and a pen. Buck headed off upstairs. Dally turned back to his sister and lifted his hand to her face again. He rubbed at the makeup on her cheek with his thumb. She hissed and jerked her head away.
"Quit it," Rae whined and gingerly touched the bruised area. “I had Carrie cover it up so teachers wouldn’t ask about it.”
“Good,” he commended. “Smart.”
Carried came back into the room and handed Dally a torn piece of paper.
"Thanks," he said, taking it and stuffing it into his pocket. “When ya gotta be home, kid?”
“Well, I didn’t tell mom when I’d be back and since they’re leavin’ tonight, I guess whenever?” He took his cowboy hat off and laid it on the bar.
“Good,” he said, unbuttoning his shirt. He slipped it off to reveal his white undershirt. “The real reason I wanted ya to come here was to show ya how to fight. You’ve been gettin’ lucky and that ain’t good enough.” Dally nodded in Carrie’s direction. “You may as well join in too, since you’re here an’ all.”
“Couldn’t hurt,” Rae conceded and slipped off her stool. She noticed her friend’s eyes dancing excitedly. “Uh- skin or weapon?”
“Both, but skin for now.”
“Go out back,” Buck ordered from upstairs. “Bar’ll be openin’ soon.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Dally called and stood up. He led them out the back door and into the fenced in backyard. Buck opened this area to customers during the spring and summer, but with the weather turning cold, everyone opted to stay inside.
“Now,” Dally said, sitting himself on the top of a picnic table. “Making a fist is the first thing ya’ll should learn. If ya don’t punch right, you could break your fingers.” He clenched his fist as an example. “You two try it.”
“We ain’t little kids, Dally,” Rae argued. He gave her a pointed look and she rolled her eyes, but pulled her hand into a fist, anyway. Carrie mirrored them.
“You’d be surprised how many people tuck their thumb into their palm. Anyway, when ya punch someone, don’t go for the head. Head shots are pure luck and very painful for the person throwin’ the punch. You could also kill ‘em and we ain’t got time for that shit. Plus, ya’ll are short as hell, ya prob’ly can’t even reach a guy’s head if he’s standin’ up. Body shots are always the best.” He stood up and demonstrated. “Right hook.” He went again with his other fist. “Left hook. Whichever side is your strongest.” He had them go through the motions a few times without force. “If ya do have to go for the head, aim for the throat.” He pointed to his jugular. “Best case scenario, you’ll hit gold. If they see it comin’, chances are, they’ll duck and you’ll still get ‘em in the chin or nose.”
“And what happens when they block your hand?” Dally shrugged.
“Kick ‘em in the balls.”
A while later, Rae had discovered that her right hand was dominant, while Carrie’s left was more powerful.
“If you’re on the receivin’ end of a punch, ya need to block it, fast. It’s always better to block it with your arm.” He held his arms up in a boxing stance. “Gimme a shot,” he ordered his sister.
She balled her fist and gave him a half-assed punch. He slowly pushed her hand away from his head with his arm, showing them the movement involved.
“Obviously, if you’re in a real fight it’d go much faster.” He turned to Carrie, moving back into position. “Now, you.”
Unfortunately for Dally, Rae’s friend didn’t hold back. Whether he wasn’t expecting a full-strength shot to the head or she was too fast for him, she couldn’t tell, but Carrie’s fist completely bypassed her brother’s arms and she socked him right in the nose.
Rae’s mouth dropped open when she realized what had happened. He stood still, dazed for a second, and his nose started dripping blood. It was like a scene from a movie. Oh dear god, he was going to give her friend an earful half an hour after they’d first met.
“Oh my god!” Carrie gasped. “Oh my god, I am so sorry, I-” But instead of being mad, Dally laughed. Rae relaxed and rolled her eyes.
“Jesus, kid,” he huffed, wiping the blood from his face. “You pack a mean punch for someone so small. You’d do fine in a rumble.” The back door opened and Buck appeared.
“Ya’ll want some of this casserole before the bar opens?”
“Yeah, sure,” Dally said, facing his friend. “It’s quitin’ time, anyway.” Buck lifted an eyebrow at Dally’s nose.
“You alright, man?”
“This ain’t nothin’,” he responded. “You better watch out for your kid sister, though. She could prob’ly punch your lights out.”

The Reunion
Nicole entered the Homestead feeling exhausted from an intense day with Wynonna, Dolls, and Doc. It had only been a few weeks since she had been recruited into the Black Badge Division, and between patrolling shifts for P.P.D. and B.B.D., she felt like she was about to collapse. Waverly was recovering from touching the black goo, and was assigned to look into the creature that attempted to enter Purgatory when Willa crossed the line. Since coming into contact with its remains, she obtained certain powers that she was attempting to control, which was exhausting for her as well.
Nicole placed her jacket and Stetson on the kitchen table.
“Waves?” she called.
“Gimme a sec!” Waverly answered.
She entered the dining room holding an envelope, excitement in her eyes.
“What is that?” Nicole asked, reaching for it.
“An invitation to my high school reunion!” she responded with glee, “it seems like only yesterday I was cheering on the Purgatory Devils, now here I am, kicking actual devil ass.” She winked.
“That you are.” Nicole smirked and took the envelope and opened it to reveal a formal invitation. While reading, she asked, “So…a cheerleader, huh?”
“Did you suspect anything different?” Waverly asked, putting a hand on her hip and a fist in the air dramatically.
“…Nope,” Nicole chuckled as she placed the invitation on the table and wrapped her arms around the girl. She looked lovingly into her eyes, relieved to finally be home. She placed their foreheads together and sighed in unison. Waverly hummed as they swayed back and forth, both enjoying their rare moment alone together.
“Wanna be my plus one, Officer Haughtstuff?” Waverly asked, a hopeful look in her eye. Nicole rubbed the back of her neck with her hand and gave her an uneasy smile.
“Uh…I don’t really do high schools, you know?”
“Whaaaat?” Waverly put her hands together in a pleading motion, “C’mon, I bet I can change your mind!”
In a flash, Waverly Earp was running upstairs. The sound of boxes hitting the floor, closet doors slamming, and frustrated grunts ensued.
“UGH, where is it?” She screamed frustratingly from the second floor.
“Wave?” Nicole asked, curious.
She could hear frustrated grunts, then suddenly a few articles of clothing flew down the stairs. I’m just going to let her do…whatever it is she is doing, thought Nicole. She wandered over to the desk and peaked at Waverly’s research. She spotted her adorable handwritten notes, stacked between piles of mythological books. Lifting the heavy volumes, she managed to slide out a page from Waverly’s research. It read:
Legion—a group of demons; New Testament, Jesus performs exorcism and discovers man is possessed by a multitude of demons who call themselves ‘Legion’. Legion feeds off of negative emotion, such as anger or jealousy.
She shuddered and thought a multitude of demons? This situation was becoming more complex by the minute. She thought back to an early memory of when the two of them first met. Waverly, soaked in beer, acting like an adorable puppy, and Nicole’s cheeks grew warm while reminiscing.
She was looking at some old photographs when Waverly’s voice came from behind her. “Oh officerrrrr…” she tempted, in a sing-song voice. Nicole turned around abruptly.
“Wave, what were yo—“ Nicole lost her words mid-sentence. Waverly stood in front of her wearing a high school cheerleading uniform, white and teal, with shorts that didn’t leave too much to the imagination.
“—Holy shit.” Nicole said. Waverly gave her a suggestive smile and sauntered over to the stereo. She pressed play on her phone and “Burnin’ Up” by Distant Cousins began to play through the speakers. She walked in a predatory manner towards Nicole.
“I bet I could change your mind about coming with me to the reunion…” she whispered, her hips swaying and pounding to the beat. She held two shiny pom-poms in her hands and performed what Nicole figured was an earlier routine. Nicole’s eyes grew wide, her heart fluttering. You will surely be the death of me, Waverly Earp, she thought. Waverly turned to face Nicole and ended with a big finish, dropping her ass to the ground.
“You like what you see, Officer?”
She then lightly pushed Nicole into the chair behind her and straddled her hips, reaching over the table to grab the Stetson, placing it on her head. Nicole moved her hands to Waverly’s hips but Waverly grabbed them and said, “Ah, only if you agree to be my plus one…” she teased. Nicole groaned and gave her a hesitant smile. Though, it was a small price to pay, for Waverly was nowhere near done with her performance.

Nicole had to work a patrol shift before the reunion, and didn’t have time to change. So she met Waverly at Purgatory High, in her uniform. She spotted Waverly leaning against her Jeep, and walked over to greet her.
“Hey babe,” Nicole said, as she went in for a kiss.
“Wait…” Waverly hesitated, “So, all of these people here are mostly idiots… and I’m not sure if I want them knowing about us…”
Nicole stepped back and rolled up her sleeves, looking slightly frustrated.
“Then why am I your plus one, Wave?” she asked.
“Because I want you here with me…” Waverly responded, looking apologetic. Nicole couldn’t refuse her pleading eyes.
“Alright, alright,” Nicole started, “no PDA, got it.”
Waverly gave her a small smile and grabbed her hand quickly to squeeze it, then let go and beckoned her to follow her into the school. The inside of the commons area was decorated in light blue and gray paint, a cartoon devil emblem on the wall above the entrance to their small gymnasium. Waverly motioned Nicole over as they walked into the cafeteria where the reunion was being held. Nicole looked around at the people there (around fifty or sixty), and saw a couple of people she knew through her policing. A guy she had recently pulled over for doing 180 mph slowly walked up to her. His name was Paul.
“Hey there, Officer!” he said in a friendly manner. “I’ve been meaning to apologize for speeding a couple of weeks ago; I swear it won’t happen again!” He gave her a grin. Nicole crossed her arms and smirked.
“It better not,” she said with an authoritative tone and a smile to let him know she was being friendly; he returned it and looked to Waverly.
“So did you two come together, I suppose?” he asked. Nicole sniggered at the double innuendo which earned her an elbow in the ribs from Waverly. Paul was confused.
“Yeah, Officer Haught is a good friend of mine.” Waverly said, wrapping her arm around Nicole.
“Oh nice!” he replied, “Let me go grab you ladies some drinks, I’ll be right back!” He walked away towards the beverages. Waverly shot Nicole a confused look.
“I don’t know what his deal is; he wasn’t that perky in school.”
“He’s probably just trying to get on my good side, Waves.”
“Hmph.” Waverly crossed her arms, with a guarded stare.
Chrissy Nedley skipped over to Waverly and Nicole. “Hey Waves!” she started, “Oh! Deputy Haught, what’re you doing here? Waverly, are you coming out or something?” Chrissy witnessed the altercation between Champ and Nicole at Bobo Del Rey’s poison fiasco, so she knew Waverly and Nicole were together.
“No! Well, not yet. Not right now.” Waverly babbled. With that, Nicole turned around and meandered over to the trophy case. A particular cheer trophy caught her eye: ‘REGIONAL CHEERLEADING CHAMPIONS—2012’ She smiled to herself, knowing that her pocket-sized bombshell of a girlfriend probably led them to that victory. Suddenly Paul approached her:
“I got you some punch, is that cool?” he asked. Nicole nodded. “So, you got a first name, Officer?”
“Yes, but let’s stick with Officer or ma’am for now, that cool?”
“Ah man, I brought you punch? Can I get a first name in exchange?”
Nicole was catching onto his flirtatious game and was making her best attempt to put an end to it. He touched her arm playfully so she took a step back. “C’moonnn, if you don’t tell me your name I’m just gonna call you Haughtie.” He smirked. Instantly, Waverly took a step between them and punched her finger into his chest.
“What are you doing?” she asked, pressing forward to create space between him and Nicole.
“What the hell, Earp? I’m just talking to her. Why don’t you tell me your friend’s first name, so we can get to know each other a little better.” He winked and continued, “I have to admit, I’ve had my eye on you for a while, Haught. You definitely live up to your last name, know what I’m sayin’?” Nicole felt her cheeks grow warm, not with flattery, but with annoyance. She started to speak when Waverly stepped in.
She grabbed him by the collar, “She’s taken,” she growled, her voice lowered an octave.
“Waverly!” Nicole gently grabbed her hands and stood in front of her; Paul staggered back, into a nearby table.
“What the fuck?” He said, fearful. “Are you gay or something? Jesus Christ…” He walked towards the door, glancing over his shoulder to make sure Waverly wasn’t following him. Nicole looked into her eyes with worry. Waverly’s eyes flashed from brown to black rapidly. Nicole had no idea what to do, but remembered the notes from Waverly’s desk. Anger and jealousy…Nicole thought. A lightbulb went off.
“Waverly—Waves, remember that time your sister shot me?” Okay, not a good way to start. “Well, uh, I mean before she shot me? Wynonna couldn’t risk giving up Peacemaker, so you confessed that you loved me?” Waverly’s eyes faltered, yet continued. She didn’t speak, just stared unblinking into the abyss. Nicole was becoming frantic, and unsure. She didn’t know how to handle the situation, she had only just learned about the supernatural events of Purgatory a couple of weeks ago. She hesitated, and then continued. “You said you loved me, and I knew that even if Willa shot me, everything would be alright.” Waverly’s body became predatory, a darkness overcoming her. “Waves, I’ve been meaning to tell you that I love you!”
Waverly’s eyes instantly turned from black to a soft brown. “What?” She huffed.
“I love you, Waverly Earp.”
Waverly instantly walked towards her and grabbed her by the back of the head into an adoring kiss. Nicole felt the stares of the people around her and pulled back. Smiling, Waverly looked at her former classmates and said simply, “I’m gay, bitches.”
