Hell, even the act of learning a game engine is a transferrable skill.

It's sort of like saying it's a waste to learn Blender because people use 3DS Max, or why bother learning how to use a Mac when many people use Windows; it's all the same principals applied differently. The knowledge is still fundamental and applicable across tools.

Many engines use C-adjacent languages. Many engines use similar IDE interfaces. Many engines use Object Oriented Programming. Many engines have component-based architecture. Many objects handle data and modular prefabs and inheritence in a similar way. You are going to be learning skills that are applicable everywhere, and hiring managers worth their weight will be well aware of this.

I used Unity for almost a decade and am now learning Godot and finding many similarities between the two. Last year we had to wait over a month for an update to FCP X after macOS Sierra came out. They released it just before the FCP X Creative Summit. This year though there are some major changes to the underlying OS, most especially in the disk formatting area and 32 bit software support. Also the iPhones are shooting in video and photo formats that are not currently supported in macOS (though I imagine a Pro Formats update could fix that for Sierra). That all being the case I could see them speeding up the next FCP X release.

Anyways, the safe route is wait till at least the first FCP X update after High Sierra is released. Same should be said for any other programs and plugins that are essential to your workflows. Things could work fine, but there are a million little things that can go wrong with software, hardware, plugins, etc. If you make money with your software then do yourself a favor and wait. If it’s just a hobby or you like to live on the digital edge then be my guest and be a guinea pig for the rest of us. Somebody’s got to find the bugs. 😉 Just make sure and report them. The faster they find them the faster they can be fixed. Software and plugin makers will report on compatibility usually within the first day to week or so. Audio plugins in particular seem to break a lot with OS updates so check with your 3rd party companies.

This was a surprising one for many because of what they focused on. One of the biggest things is actually that it was pre-announced, like the Mac Pro and iMac Pro. Once again showing Apple's new policy of transparency in action for media pro related stuff. Interesting at least. The 360/VR was expected to be coming after we found out Apple hired Tim Dashwood and acquired his industry standard 360 degree toolset. I just didn't think it would be this soon. Though from Apple's WWDC presentation they showed a focus on VR. I assume they instructed the FCP team to make it a priority. Here's some more info on what they've done there: https://medium.com/.../apple-to-introduce-next-level... The second big thing was color.... finally.... The color board was simple and fairly powerful, but had it's limits. We all assumed they would stick with leaving it to the 3rd parties. This new stuff is a fully fledged coloring system though. Including HSL curves! There are some great plugin options but for project stability and longevity built in tools are almost always a better option. They went the extra mile with a couple things. Unlike many of the color grading plugin options this is fully key-framable per parameter. The other big thing if you look at the interface is that about every parameter has the ability to color mask independently. That's something no one else has, even Resolve (without adding a whole other corrector). So say you wanted to use the blue curve, you can tell it exactly what color range to affect. They also finally added built in external LUT support, but not just for input effects, they also have an export LUT option if you need your export to conform to a certain color space or film stock. Related to color is HDR. They expanded wide gamut to full support for two industry standards for HDR and extra tools in the scopes to properly monitor and control levels. Overall while they mainly focused just on a couple things they did them right. Went the extra mile (unlike the FCP X initial launch).   There’s a couple small edit functionality improvements as well involving Roles, but the focus is VR and Color. This is where some of us are disappointed. I was hoping for a more edit functionality and workflow heavy update like last year. Hope there’s more in the official release for that. It's almost certain major workflow stuff is coming at some point though. Apple also hired the guy own owns Automatic Duck this year. He's the leading expert anywhere on project translation/conversion between applications. Anyways, this update has cool tool additions, but either really not applicable to me or mostly covered by plugins I have. Huge though for anyone doing VR. Finally a truly native solution.

In the early days of Avid, I don’t think there even were sync locks, but, if there were, the default was for them to be switched off (this has now changed). So in this example, I’d work with a Media Composer timeline that looks like this: I want those to stay in sync with their clips. But the sound effects and dialogue are specific to the shots that I’ve placed them with. The music must be 60 sec long (often it’s a pilot track that’s already been composed to the correct duration), the end title has to be 3 seconds long, and the packshot and title has to come over that. We used to love doing three-way dissolves by doing a dissolve in the NLE, playing that dissolve to U-matic tape and digitizing it again so we could dissolve from that digitized ‘thing’ to a new shot. The first NLE I used was a Lightworks with four (yes, 4) audio tracks and one (1) video track. Locking tracks will prevent them from moving while you move everything else. This essentially is the opposite of a sync lock: sync lock will lock tracks to each other so they will move with each other. In Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro, you can also LOCK your actual tracks which prevents them from moving when you’re trimming. Some NLE systems do this automatically, like the magnetic timeline in FCP X, but there are plenty of occasions where you don’t want them locked together. Sync locks allow you to lock certain tracks together in order to keep them in sync with each other. If you only had your video track selected and you deleted some time, it would only affect your video layer, bumping everything else out of sync. In other words, if you were adding or removing time, you had to make sure you were doing it across all the tracks you wanted to adjust. In the early days of non-linear editing, the systems were designed to emulate a flatbed for film editing. You can’t afford to start trimming in the middle of your cut willy-nilly if you’re not 100% sure that everything else in your timeline is going to be where you want it to be. That’s where “Sync Lock” comes in. There are a number of ways to do this, but of course, the main thing you need to do is keep everything else in the right place. The director wants to add in a few shots and extend the montage part of this scene. This scene has dialog, SFX, buzzes and a couple of music tracks that correspond to specific hit points in the film. The director wants to change a scene in the middle of the film, one of the complex ones. The first and last scenes have both specifically got a lot of audio and video tracks, as do some of the scenes in the middle of the film. I have 26 tracks of audio and 5 tracks of video in my timeline. It’s 105 minutes long and fairly complex: I’m using Avid Media Composer because of its unmatched power when it comes to collaborative projects. I’m cutting a film and we are close to having the director’s cut completed.

Another good feature of the software is the fast rendering speed, and high maximum resolution at 4096 x 4096. Premiere Pro allows you to add a wide range of special effects that will make your work stand out. You can do automatic colour correction, level effects, auto contrast as well as change the brightness, remove colours or add lighting/shadow effects. You can also add text and graphics, giving videos an animated feel. This software gives you a lot of creative freedom, however, it takes a while to navigate which can make it unfriendly to those with no prior experience with video software. The software does take up a lot of RAM space which means it will not run as smoothly on computers with less space, especially with larger projects.

Final Cut Pro

Final cut pro is an editing software only available to Mac users.This software has many creative effects that can be used including filters, motion graphics, special effects, etc. FCP also It supports 360-degree video editing for VR. This software runs smoothly and quickly as it uses the latest CPUs and graphics processors that run on Macs. This is beneficial for me as a mac user myself. Final Cut Pro uses a tagging system which makes it easy to navigate the interface and find files.

iMovie is a beginner friendly editing software due to the very friendly UI. It is available on most apple devices and can be accessed on PC. It is very easy to learn the technicalities of iMovie, with the ease of importing video files and begin working with them. You can add photos, music, transactional effect, voiceovers, by dragging and dropping. iMovie also allows users to add effects to their videos, this is in the form of 10 premade effects which does not allow much room for customization. Although you can create some well constructed videos on iMovie, you are restricted for choice when it comes to creativity and more advanced techniques, in comparison to previously mentioned softwares.

Alongside this, the app allows you to sync your video to the soundtrack.

Adobe Premier Rush

This app is free on desktop and mobile. It has simple tools for audio, motion graphics etc. making it easy to use. You can add transitions between clips, colour correct videos manually or using presets available. It is simple to share your videos through this app. The app does seem to cater more towards people looking to create short form content to upload to social media.

KineMaster

Kinemaster has a slightly more advanced approach to video editing than the previously mentioned apps. This app allows you to edit frame by frame. Alongside the features you would expect, this app supports green screens which gives more room for creativity. kinemaster has a good backup and save system which minimizes the chances of projects being lost.
