Officially making The Three into reincarnations of Timberstar's victims.

Lionblaze's soul is FA!Redtail's, renamed to Redtrail. He gains a huge social standing with the elders because of how similar they look. He inherits the dead cat's pattern, huge fluffy tail and mane, and his pride in his Vigil.

Hollyleaf's soul is FA!Graypool. She looks the least like her pervious life's pelt, but bears strange white streaks on the side of her head. All of the triplets have similar markings, but can be easily excused or hidden, unlike Hollyleaf's. She inherits Graypool's wit, stature, and eye color.

Jayfeather's soul is FA!Brindleface, renamed to Brindledface. He looks like her splitting image, which is the cause of many debates between Ashfur, Squirrelflight, and Bramblethorn (Brambleclaw). Jayfeather gains her pelt, eye color, and wit.

However, they each gain one of the flaws of their old souls.

Lionblaze gains Redtrail's tendency to rush into thinks without thought. Hollyleaf gains Graypool's tendency to lie instead of tell the truth. Jayfeather gains Brindledface's tendency to spiral.

Chapter 22

Jayfeather

When Jayfeather opened his eyes he was surrounded by inky darkness. He couldn’t see, smell or hear anything. Blinking, he got to his paws cautiously. 

“Rock?” he called out. 

“Good, you're finally here.” Rock mewed from behind him. Jayfeather felt his heart leap in surprise, as he spun around to face the hairless cat. Rock’s cloudy milky eyes stared at him, his face not giving away any emotion. 

“Where is here exactly? There’s nothing around us!” Jayfeather asked.

“It is here. This is the beginning and the end and the inbetween. Now listen closely, this is going to be far different from any dream you’ve experienced. We are about to walk in the past. What you are about to see has already happened and there is nothing you can do to change it. You will be a ghost walking in a memory. Stay close to me and do not stray.” Rock warned, flicking his tail to encourage Jayfeather to follow him. 

Jayfeather let out a harumph. 

“So I’ve heard. Stoneteller says that I can get lost here and never return. He said that I might not want to leave. As if! I have enough to worry about in the present! ” Jayfeather mewed as they walked through the darkness. He pricked his ears as ahead of him he could hear the whispers of voices in the distance. Ahead of the two cats a brilliant light began to peak through the darkness, almost blinding him. 

“Enough. Time to focus on what I’m about to show you.” Rock mewed as his form was swallowed in the light. 

Jayfeather placed a paw over his eyes, shielding them as he tried to blink. His eyes were welling with water as the light caused him pain. After a few heartbeats, the light faded along with the inky black world. The sounds of nature and birds filled Jayfeather’s ears as he suddenly found himself standing on a strip of forest, Rock at his side. Colorful leaves fell from trees high above his head, as cool wind rustled his fur showing him that it was Leaf-fall. Jayfeather spun in a circle trying to orientate himself. 

“Where are we now?” he asked Rock. 

Rock did not look down at him, his cloudy eyes staring straight ahead fixed on something. 

“In the past, during the time of the Ancient tribes.” Rock mewed, flicking his tail, pointing to what he was looking at. 

Jayfeather turned his head.  

In front of them was a silver tom cat, with a white chest and blue eyes.The tom cat was crouching in a hunting pounce, his blue eyes fixed on the crow that laid ahead of him. Jayfeather felt his heart leap for a moment, as he felt as if he was looking into a puddle!

That’s Jay’s Wing! He realized. But we’re not at the lake anymore! This must have been during their journey to the mountains!

“How long have they been traveling? The Ancient Tribe?” Jayfeather asked Rock as he took notice of Jay’s wing’s protruding bones. The cat looked as if he hadn’t eaten a decent meal in a while. 

“Three moons.” Rock answered as Jay sprang, catching the crow with his forpaws. The crow screeched in terror before the Tom sank his fangs into its neck silencing it forever. 

Jayfeather blinked in surprise. 

“Three moons? It only took us a quarter moon to get to the mountain!” he mewed. 

“Yes, but this was before the Two-legs had finished building their cluster of nests! They had just begun making them. Journeying through wild territory is far more difficult than simply walking through gardens!” Rock mewed. 

“Good catch!” A familiar voice called, pulling Jayfeather’s attention away from Jay. A smokey gray she-cat padded out from behind some bushes, a mouse dangling from her jaw. Jayfeather immediately recognized her, it was Dove’s wing Jay’s sister. She padded over to her brother, dropping the mouse. 

“We should hurry back. I want to get this prey to Half-moon while it’s still warm. It’ll be more filling.” Jay reported to his sister who nodded. 

“She and the little ones need it!” Dove mewed, her eyes then darkened with worry. “Do you think we’ll arrive at our new home soon? She’s not too far from kitting.” she asked worriedly. 

Jayfeather felt his heart leap once more. 

“Half-moon and Jay’s wing ��they had kits?” He gasped, unable to believe his ears. 

I had kits in a past life? I can’t believe it! Jayfeather thought, his mind buzzing with racing thoughts. Having a mate and kits was something inconceivable to him, since he had become a medicine cat very early on in his apprentice-hood. The concept seemed even more foreign to him now after everything that had happened with Leafpool. He could not bear the idea of loving someone and bringing kits into a world where he could not care for them. 

“Stars willing.” Jay’s wing mewed picking up his crow as the two cats started to head back. “I know I’ve been pushing everybody harder than we can go lately. But we’re so close I can feel it! I know we’re headed in the right direction! Just a few more sunrises and then we’ll be there!” 

Jay’s eyes flickered with the fire of determination. 

Dove looked up at her brother, worry still in her eyes. 

“You know I believe in you, as do many other cats, but Tiger-” Dove began only for Jay to cut her off. 

“Tiger’s fury is welcome to leave if he so wishes. When we casted the stones at the lake I told the others they were welcome to stay or they could follow me. I am not keeping any cats here.” Jay mewed, sternly. 

“Tiger’s fury…” Jayfeather muttered under his breath trying to remember, as he and Rock followed the two cats. “He was one of the cats that chose to stay at the lake. He had casted his stone, but I don’t remember seeing him in the vision you showed me before.” Jayfeather asked Rock. 

“He did. After he casted his stone he and his brother went to search for the other Tribes that had lived by the lake. They had found they were all either dead, dying or had already left.” Rock answered. “You did not see him in the vision I showed you.”

Jayfeather flicked his ears.

“I don’t remember his brother. Did he vote to stay or go?”

“He voted to leave. He had faith in his friend.” Rock mewed.

Jayfeather blinked in surprise. 

“He and Jay’s wing are friends? Then why don’t I know his name?” Jayfeather asked. 

“Because you are Jayfeather and not Jay’s wing.”

Jayfeather turned his attention back to the two cats, searching the far reaches of his mind trying to remember if had heard Tiger’s brother’s name.

“I know, but he’s trying to rally the other cats against you. I just want you to be careful.” Dove mewed. 

Jay narrowed his eyes. “Go ahead and let him try.”

Do the three remember any of their past lives?

Some of it. Jayfeather remembers the most, because of his position as a Cleric and thus closer to his spirit, but they can feel sensations of the past.

For example, when Hollyleaf ends up murdering Ashfur, the sensation of huge teeth on her throat make her feel ill, and she has a panic attack after the deed is done. It reminds her of something she'd never felt before, and it aches.

Lionblaze's worst experience with the memories is when he goes caving with Heatherstem (Heathertail) and a section of it caves in. He outright panics, scrambling and sobbing when it was only a light cave in. Heatherstem helps him escape and comforts him, but he can only talk in whispers in the morning.

Jayfeather hasn't had a bad experience like Hollyleaf or Lionblaze, because he knows his limits. Hell, he's the only one of the three to ever talk with the original spirit in some capacity, even if it's just in single words, whispered on the breeze.
