Orbital Tumors Surgery in India
What Are The Orbital Tumors?
The orbital tumors are tumors that appear somewhere around the orbit. The orbit is the bony socket that protects the eye from any threat. The orbital tumors can appear anywhere in the orbit, and they lead to the displacement of the eyes – basically, the eyes can look bigger, a disease called proptosis, or they are lower or higher than normal, a condition called dystopias. This kind of tumor is very dangerous, if is not treated in time, it can lead to the complete loss of eyesight.
How Can The Orbital Tumors Be Treated?
The orbital tumors can be treated through an orbital tumor surgery. Orbital tumors are removed via a surgery called an orbitotomy, an orbit-opening surgery to access the tumor. This kind of surgery may be performed through a lateral, anterior, medial, or posterior route and is then called lateral orbitotomy, anterior orbitotomy, medial orbitotomy, or posterior orbitotomy. If multiple approaches are used, then the surgery is called a combined orbitotomy. The orbitotomy basically consists of a surgery through which the orbit is opened and the tumor is removed. The anterior orbitotomy, used for tumors that are located in the anterior orbit, is done with a trans-septal, trans-periosteal, or transconjunctival incision (Through the conjunctival surface of the eyelid), through which the tumor is removed. The lateral orbitotomy is used to remove masses located deeper in the orbit, or lesions of the lacrimal gland. The incision is placed this time under the brow, higher in the eyebrow, or in the small crease in the eyelid. After the incision, the periorbita has to be opened after a small section of the bone has been removed. Once the periorbita is opened, the oculoplastic surgeon can remove the tumor, close the periorbita back, and replace the bone. When it comes to the posterior orbitotomy, it is done similarly to the lateral one, through the same, lateral approach.
Recovery
The recovery time depends on the patient and on the type of surgery that was performed like how complicated was it, or how big the tumor was, but it usually takes around 2 weeks for you to be able to go back to your normal life, as the surgery will give you bruises and swelling that take time to disappear. The first week after the surgery, you will be restrained from doing very difficult sports, and the general effort you make should be minimized. It’s recommended not to travel during the first 4 weeks after the surgery, although you’ll most likely be discharged in just a day after the orbitotomy surgery. You will also need to go for regular checkups after the surgery. After the type or types of orbitotomy you need are done, there will remain scars, but the scars should be minimal when the surgery is performed by a skilled oculoplastic surgeon. It takes time, however, for these scars to disappear – usually between 6 – 10 months. During these months you may experience redness, tearing, or vision changes. They will eventually go away, but you will need to take the medicine your doctor prescribed you. Sometimes, using artificial tears is also recommended.
What Is The Cost Of Orbital Tumor Surgery?
Over the last few years, several rare forms of cancer have been diagnosed due to better medical technology. Rare cancers of the eye socket or the orbit can pose a significant risk of complications and metastasis. Orbital tumor removal and reconstructive surgery are a way to ensure timely treatment of the tumor and prevent further spread.
Any surgical procedure involves a considerable investment. If you require orbital tumor surgery, you should thoroughly research procedure costs. The cost of orbital tumor surgery depends on the extent of reconstruction required as well as the type of surgery needed.
