• British Bouncing Bomb

A bouncing bomb is a bomb designed to bounce to a target across water in a calculated manner to avoid obstacles such as torpedo nets, and to allow both the bomb's speed on arrival at the target and the timing of its detonation to be pre-determined, in a similar fashion to a regular naval depth charge.

Barnes Wallis' April 1942 paper "Spherical Bomb – Surface Torpedo" described a method of attack in which a weapon would be bounced across water until it struck its target, then sink to explode under water, much like a depth charge. Bouncing it across the surface would allow it to be aimed directly at its target, while avoiding underwater defences, as well as some above the surface, and such a weapon would take advantage of the "bubble pulse" effect typical of underwater explosions, greatly increasing its effectiveness: Wallis's paper identified suitable targets as hydro-electric dams "and floating vessels moored in calm waters such as the Norwegian fjords". Both types of target were already of great interest to the British military when Wallis wrote his paper (which itself was not his first on the subject); German hydro-electric dams had been identified as important bombing targets before the outbreak of World War II, but existing bombs and bombing methods had little effect on them, as torpedo nets protected them from attack by conventional torpedoes and a practical means of destroying them had yet to be devised. In 1942, the British were seeking a means of destroying the German battleship Tirpitz, which posed a threat to Allied shipping in the North Atlantic and had already survived a number of British attempts to destroy it. During this time, the Tirpitz was being kept safe from attack by being moored in Norwegian fjords, where it had the effect of a "fleet in being". Consequently, Wallis's proposed weapon attracted attention and underwent active testing and development.

On July 24th, 1942, a "spectacularly successful" demonstration of such a weapon's potential occurred when a redundant dam at Nant-y-Gro, near Rhayader, in Wales, was destroyed by a mine containing 279 pounds (127 kg) of explosive: this was detonated against the dam's side, under water, in a test undertaken by A.R. Collins, a scientific officer from the Road Research Laboratory, which was then based at Harmondsworth, Middlesex. A.R. Collins was among a large number of other people besides Barnes Wallis who made wide-ranging contributions to the development of a bouncing bomb and its method of delivery to a target, to the extent that, in a paper published in 1982, Collins himself made it evident that Wallis "did not play an all-important role in the development of this project and in particular, that very significant contributions were made by, for example, Sir William Glanville, Dr. G. Charlesworth, Dr. A.R. Collins and others of the Road Research Laboratory". However, the modification of a Vickers Wellington bomber, the design of which Wallis himself had contributed to, for work in early testing of his proposed weapon, has been cited as an example of how Wallis "would have been the first to acknowledge" the contributions of others. Also, in the words of Eric Allwright, who worked in the Drawing Office for Vickers Armstrongs at the time, "Wallis was trying to do his ordinary job [for Vickers Armstrongs] as well as all this – he was out at the Ministry and down to Fort Halstead and everywhere"; Wallis's pressing of his papers, ideas and ongoing developments on relevant authorities helped ensure that development continued; Wallis was principal designer of the models, prototypes and "live" versions of the weapon; and, perhaps most significantly, it was Wallis who explained the weapon in the final briefing for RAF crews before they set off on Operation Chastise, to use one of his designs in action.

A distinctive feature of the weapon, added in the course of development, was back-spin, which improved the height and stability of its flight and its ability to bounce, and helped the weapon to remain in contact with, or at least close proximity to, its target on arrival. Back-spin is a normal feature in the flight of golf balls, owing to the manner in which they are struck by the club, and it is perhaps for this reason that all forms of the weapon which were developed were known generically as "Golf mines", and some of the spherical prototypes featured dimples. It was decided in November 1942 to devise a larger version of Wallis's weapon for use against dams, and a smaller one for use against ships: these were code-named "Upkeep" and "Highball" respectively. Though each version derived from what was originally envisaged as a spherical bomb, early prototypes for both Upkeep and Highball consisted of a cylindrical bomb within a spherical casing. Development, testing and use of Upkeep and Highball were to be undertaken simultaneously, since it was important to retain the element of surprise: if one were to be used against a target independently, it was feared that German defences for similar targets would be strengthened, rendering the other useless. However, Upkeep was developed against a deadline, since its maximum effectiveness depended on target dams being as full as possible from seasonal rainfall, and the latest date for this was set at May 26th, 1943. In the event, as this date approached, Highball remained in development, whereas development of Upkeep had completed, and the decision was taken to deploy Upkeep independently.

Testing of Upkeep prototypes with inert filling was carried out at Chesil Beach, Dorset, flying from RAF Warmwell in December 1942, and at Reculver, Kent, flying from RAF Manston in April and May 1943, at first using a Vickers Wellington bomber. However, the dimensions and weight of the full-size Upkeep were such that it could only be carried by the largest British bomber available at the time, the Avro Lancaster, and even that had to undergo considerable modification in order to carry it. In testing, it was found that Upkeep's spherical casing would shatter on impact with water, but that the inner cylinder containing the bomb would continue across the surface of the water much as intended. As a result, Upkeep's spherical casing was eliminated from the design. Development and testing concluded on May 13th, 1943 with the dropping of a live, cylindrical Upkeep bomb 5 miles (8 km) out to sea from Broadstairs, Kent, by which time Wallis had specified that the bomb must be dropped at "precisely" 60 feet (18 m) above the water and 232 miles per hour (373 km/h) groundspeed, with back-spin at 500 rpm: the bomb "bounced seven times over some 800 yards, sank and detonated". In the operational version of Upkeep, known by its manufacturer as "Vickers Type 464", the explosive charge was Torpex, originally designed for use as a torpedo explosive, to provide a longer explosive pulse for greater effect against underwater targets; the principal means of detonation was by three hydrostatic pistols, as used in depth charges, set to fire at a depth of 30 feet (9 m); and its overall weight was 9,250 pounds (4,200 kg), of which 6,600 pounds (3,000 kg) was Torpex. Provision was also made for "self-destruct" detonation by a fuze, armed automatically as the bomb was dropped from the aircraft, and timed to fire after 90 seconds. Height was checked by a pair of intersecting spotlight beams, which, when converging on the surface of the water, indicated the correct height for the aircraft – a method devised for the raid by Benjamin Lockspeiser of MAP, and distance from the target by a simple, hand-held, triangular device: with one corner held up to the eye, projections on the other two corners would line up with pre-determined points on the target when it was at the correct distance for bomb release. In practice, this could prove awkward to handle, and some aircrews replaced it with their own arrangements, fixed within the aircraft itself, and involving chinagraph and string. On the night of May 17th 1943, Operation Chastise attacked dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley, using Upkeep. Two dams were breached, causing widespread flooding, damage, and loss of life. The significance of this attack upon the progress of the war is debated. British losses during the operation were heavy; eight of the 19 attacking aircraft failed to return, along with 53 of 113 RAF aircrew. Upkeep was not used again operationally. By the time the war ended, the remaining operational Upkeep bombs had started to deteriorate and were dumped into the North Sea without their detonation devices.

In April 1942, Wallis himself had described his proposed weapon as "essentially a weapon for the Fleet Air Arm". This naval aspect was later to be pressed by a minute issued by British prime minister Winston Churchill, in February 1943, asking "Have you given up all plans for doing anything to Tirpitz while she is in Trondheim? ... It is a terrible thing that this prize should be waiting and no one be able to think of a way of winning it." However, Highball was ultimately developed as an RAF weapon for use against various targets, including Tirpitz. From November 1942, development and testing for Highball continued alongside that of Upkeep, including the dropping of prototypes at both Chesil Beach and Reculver. While early prototypes dropped at Chesil Beach in December 1942 were forerunners for both versions of the bomb, those dropped at Chesil Beach in January and February 1943 and at Reculver in April 1943 included Highball prototypes. They were dropped by the modified Wellington bomber and at Reculver by a modified de Havilland Mosquito B Mk IV, one of two assigned to Vickers Armstrong for the purpose. By early February 1943, Wallis envisaged Highball as "comprising a 500 lb (230 kg) charge in a cylinder contained in a 35 in (89 cm) sphere with (an overall weight) of 950 lb (430 kg)", and a modified Mosquito could carry two such weapons. Further testing was carried out by three modified Mosquitoes flying from RAF Turnberry, north of Girvan, on the west coast of Scotland, against a target ship, the former French battleship Courbet, which had been moored for the purpose in Loch Striven. This series of tests was hampered by a number of errors: buoys intended to mark a point 1,200 yards (1,097 m) from Courbet, where the prototypes were to be dropped, were found to be too close to the ship by 400 yards (366 m), and, according to Wallis, other errors were due to "Variations in dimensions of [prototypes] after filling and [dimensionally incorrect] jigs for setting up the [caliper] arms". Because of these errors, the prototypes hit the target too fast and too hard, and two aircraft failed to release their prototypes, one of which then fell off while the aircraft was turning for a second attempt. By the end of May 1944, problems with releasing Highball had been resolved as had problems with aiming. Aiming Highball required a different method from Upkeep; the problem was solved by Wallis's design of a ring aperture sight fixed to a flying helmet. Highball was now a sphere with flattened poles and the explosive charge was Torpex, enclosed in a cylinder, as in Upkeep; detonation was by a single hydrostatic pistol, set to fire at a depth of 27 feet (8 m), and its weight was 1,280 pounds (581 kg), of which 600 pounds (272 kg) was Torpex. Highball was never used operationally: on 12 November 1944, in Operation Catechism, Lancasters with Tallboy bombs sank its primary target, Tirpitz. Other potential targets had been considered during Highball's development and later. These included the ships of the Italian navy, canals, dry docks, submarine pens, and railway tunnels (for which testing took place in 1943). But Italy surrendered in September 1943, and the other target ideas were dismissed as impracticable.

In January 1945, at the Vickers experimental facility at Foxwarren, near Cobham, Surrey, a Douglas A-26 Invader of the USAAF was adapted to carry two Highballs almost completely enclosed in the bomb bay, using parts from a Mosquito conversion. After brief flight testing in the UK, the kit was sent to Wright Field, Ohio, and installed in an A-26C Invader. Twenty-five inert Highballs, renamed "Speedee" bombs, were also sent for use in the USAAF trials. Drop tests were carried out over Choctawhatchee Bay near Eglin Field, Florida, but the programme was abandoned, after the bomb bounced back at A-26C-25-DT Invader 43-22644 on Water Range 60, causing loss of the rear fuselage and a fatal crash. Inert prototypes of both Upkeep and Highball that were dropped at Reculver have been recovered and these, along with a number of other examples, are displayed at various sites. In 2010, a diving project in Loch Striven successfully located several Highball prototypes, under around 114 feet (35 m) of water. In July 2017, two Highballs were successfully recovered from Loch Striven in a joint operation by teams from East Cheshire Sub-Aqua Club and the Royal Navy. One is now displayed at the de Havilland Aircraft Museum and the other arrived at Brooklands Museum in late 2019 after undergoing conservation at the Mary Rose Trust.

Colorado Snowstorm Knocks Out Power to Thousands and Snarls Travel (NYT) A snowstorm sweeping through Colorado and Wyoming on Sunday was expected to bring as much as four feet of snow to some parts of the region, and has left nearly 30,000 people without power in Colorado. The storm brought heavy, wet snow and downed trees and power lines. More than 20,000 customers near Greeley, Colo., about 50 miles north of Denver, were without power on Sunday, according to Xcel Energy. More than 2,500 people around Fort Collins, about 1,500 near Loveland and about 3,000 people in the Denver suburbs were also without power. A blizzard warning was in effect on Sunday for Colorado’s Front Range, an area that includes the Interstate 25 corridor from south of Denver up through Cheyenne, Wyo. The National Weather Service warned that an additional two to six inches of snow and wind gusts as high as 45 miles per hour could create “nearly impossible travel conditions.”

Florida’s pandemic response gets a second look from the national media (Axios) After a solid year of living with a pandemic, the national press is beginning to ask the question that even Democrats have been quietly pondering in the Sunshine State: Was Gov. Ron DeSantis’ pandemic response right for Florida? More than 32,000 Floridians have died, but our death rate is no worse than the national average—and better than some states with tighter restrictions. On Sunday’s front page, the New York Times explored the positives—from the booming real-estate market to Florida’s low unemployment rate—of an early reopening: “Much of the state has a boomtown feel,” writes Patricia Mazzei, “a sense of making up for months of lost time.” The Times notes that Florida’s unemployment rate is 5.1%, compared to 9.3% in California, 8.7% in New York and 6.9% in Texas. “That debate about reopening schools? It came and went months ago. Children have been in classrooms since the fall.” The closer you are to either loss or to the fullness of life will likely determine how you feel about the state’s response.

Quaking in their beds, sleepless Icelanders await volcanic eruption (Reuters) Icelanders are yearning for some undisturbed shut-eye after tremors from tens of thousands of earthquakes have rattled their sleep for weeks in what scientists call an unprecedented seismic event, which might well end in a spectacular volcanic eruption. “At the moment we’re feeling it constantly. It’s like you’re walking over a fragile suspension bridge,” Rannveig Gudmundsdottir, a lifelong resident in the town of Grindavik, told Reuters. Grindavik lies in the southern part of the Reykjanes Peninsula, a volcanic and seismic hot spot, where more than 40,000 earthquakes have occurred since Feb. 24. Located between the Eurasian and the North American tectonic plates, Iceland frequently experiences earthquakes as the plates slowly drift in opposite directions at a pace of around 2 centimetres each year. “Everyone here is so tired,” Gudmundsdottir, a 5th grade school teacher, said. “When I go to bed at night, all I think about is: Am I going to get any sleep tonight?” Authorities in Iceland warned of an imminent volcanic eruption on the peninsula in early March, but said they did not expect it to disturb international air traffic or damage critical infrastructure nearby.

Vigil To Reclaim The Streets From Vigilance (CNN) Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive, disappeared on March 3 while walking home from a friend’s home in London’s southern neighborhood of Clapham. Her body was found inside a builder’s bag in a wooded area. A 48-year-old police officer has been charged with kidnapping and killing her. On Saturday, thousands of people gathered in Clapham Common to pay tribute to Everard despite planned nationwide vigils having been canceled due to pandemic restrictions. As darkness fell, police officers began grabbing women in the crowd and making arrests. Videos posted on social media showed officers violently dragging some female protesters away and throwing others to the ground and handcuffing them. Women’s rights activists in the UK are reeling from the Metropolitan Police’s heavy-handed approach. There’s also been political fallout, with a member of Parliament reading out the names of 118 women murdered last year. In a new poll, over 70% of UK women said they had been sexually harassed in public spaces. The figure rose to 97% among women aged 18-24. 45% said they didn’t believe reporting the incidents to officials would change anything.

Dutch police break up thousands of anti-lockdown protesters (The Hill) Police in the Netherlands dispersed thousands of anti-lockdown protesters outside the Hague on Sunday, one day before national elections begin in the country. Reuters reports that police used batons and water cannons to disperse the crowd who authorities said were ignoring social distancing rules as well as warnings from authorities. Many of those gathered in the crowd held up yellow umbrellas and signs in opposition that read “Love, freedom, stop dictatorship,” according to Reuters. The country has been under an intense lockdown since January, Reuters notes, with gatherings of more than two people banned and the first night-time curfew issued since World War II. When the lockdown was extended, it sparked several days of rioting across the country. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Netherlands has confirmed over 1.1 million coronavirus cases and more than 16,000 related deaths.

Spain to launch trial of four-day working week (The Guardian) Spain could become one of the first countries in the world to trial the four-day working week after the government agreed to launch a modest pilot project for companies interested in the idea. Earlier this year, the small leftwing Spanish party Más País announced that the government had accepted its proposal to test out the idea. From New Zealand to Germany, the idea has been steadily gaining ground globally. Hailed by its proponents as a means to increase productivity, improve the mental health of workers and fight climate change, the proposal has taken on new significance as the pandemic sharpens issues around wellbeing, burnout and work-life balance. Leftwing parties in Spain—where a 44-day strike in Barcelona in 1919 resulted in the country becoming one of the first in western Europe to adopt the eight-hour workday—have seized on the idea. “Spain is one of the countries where workers put in more hours than the European average. But we’re not among the most productive countries,” said Iñigo Errejón of Más País. “I maintain that working more hours does not mean working better.”

Major European nations suspend use of AstraZeneca vaccine (AP) A cascading number of European countries—including Germany, France, Italy and Spain—suspended use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine Monday over reports of dangerous blood clots in some recipients, though the company and international regulators say there is no evidence the shot is to blame. AstraZeneca’s formula is one of three vaccines in use on the continent. But the escalating concern is another setback for the European Union’s vaccination drive, which has been plagued by shortages and other hurdles. The EU’s drug regulatory agency called a meeting for Thursday to review experts’ findings on the AstraZeneca shot and decide whether action needs to be taken.

Myanmar junta orders martial law in 6 Yangon townships (AP) Myanmar’s ruling junta has declared martial law in six townships in the country’s largest city, as security forces killed dozens of protesters over the weekend in an increasingly lethal crackdown on resistance to last month’s military coup. At least 38 people were killed Sunday and dozens were injured in one of the deadliest days of the crackdown on anti-coup protesters, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, or AAPP, an independent group tracking the toll of the violence. Several estimates from other sources gave higher figures.

Flights canceled during China’s worst sandstorm in a decade (AP) China’s capital and a wide swath of the country’s north were enveloped Monday in the worst sandstorm in a decade, forcing the cancelation of hundreds of flights. Skyscrapers in the center of Beijing appeared to drop from sight amid the dust and sand. Traffic was snarled and more than 400 flights out of the capital’s two main airports were canceled amid high winds and low visibility. The National Meteorological Center said Monday’s storm had developed in the Gobi Desert in the Inner Mongolia Region, where schools had been advised to close and bus service added to reduce residents’ exposure to the harsh conditions. The National Meteorological Center forecasted the sand and dust would affect 12 provinces and regions from Xinjiang in the far northwest to Heilongjiang in the northeast and the eastern coastal port city of Tianjin.

Taiwan’s boom (NYT) Taiwan, home to 24 million people, has seen fewer than 1,000 cases of Covid-19 and just 10 coronavirus-related deaths. Prior to 2020, lots of Taiwanese and dual nationals moved abroad and only came back for a visit. After the pandemic hit, Taiwan closed its borders to almost all foreign visitors. Protocols put in place include temperature checks, hand-sanitizing, mask-wearing (except in schools), rigorous contact tracing, and strict quarantines for incoming travelers. Taiwanese nationals returned, and about 270,000 more stayed than left. As a result, the island is experiencing a real economic boom. Exports have been rising for eight months, fueled by shipments of electronics and surging demand for semiconductor chips. Domestic tourism is exploding. The economy grew more than 5% in the fourth quarter compared with the same time period in 2019. And every day restaurants, bars, aFor Law Enforcementnd cafes are packed, office buildings hum, and schools are filled with laughing, unmasked children. “We just feel very lucky and definitely a little guilty,” said a product manager for a Bay Area tech company who returned to Taipei with his wife and young son last May. “We feel like we are the ones who benefited from the pandemic.”

United States and Iran warily circle each other over reactivating nuclear deal (Washington Post) The United States is willing to sit down with Iran “tomorrow” and jointly agree to full compliance with the nuclear accord they and five other world powers signed in 2015, according to a senior Biden administration official. Iran has made equally clear it shares the goal of going back to the terms of the original agreement, before President Donald Trump pulled out of it. But nearly two months into Biden’s presidency, with Iran’s own contentious presidential election approaching in June, the two sides have been unable even to talk to each other about what both say they want. Iran wants all Trump sanctions lifted and an immediate influx of cash from the release of blocked international loans and frozen funds, along with foreign investment and removal of bans on oil sales. It seeks assurances that the next U.S. administration won’t jettison the deal again. For its part, the Biden administration wants a reactivated deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, to serve as a “platform” to renegotiate its sunset provisions—the future dates when certain provisions are set to expire. It wants to move quickly to discussions about its other problems with Iran, including Tehran’s ballistic missile program and its use of proxy forces in Iraq, Syria and beyond, and human rights abuses. Both sides continue to wait for the other to prove its good faith with “you, first” rhetoric.

‘Republic of Queues’: 10 years on, Syria is a hungry nation (AP) The lines stretch for miles outside gas stations in Syrian cities, with an average wait of five hours to fill up a tank. At bakeries, people push and shove during long, chaotic waits for their turn to collect the quota of two bread packs a day per family. On the streets in the capital of Damascus, beggars accost motorists and passers-by, pleading for food or money. Medicines, baby milk and diapers can hardly be found. As Syria marks the 10th anniversary Monday of the start of its uprising-turned-civil war, President Bashar Assad may still be in power, propped up by Russia and Iran. But millions of people are being pushed deeper into poverty, and a majority of households can hardly scrape together enough to secure their next meal. “Life here is a portrait of everyday humiliation and suffering,” said one woman in Damascus. Her husband lost his job at an electronics store last month, and now the family is drawing on meager savings that are evaporating fast. With two kids and an elderly father to care for, she said life had become unbearably difficult and she is gripped by anxiety for the future. Until recently, she could smuggle in her father’s medicines from Lebanon, but now Lebanon has its own meltdown and shortages.

A/N: I know this is super early as its only 3:24 am, but I can’t sleep and seeing as I will be busy most of the day I decided to go ahead and post this

The incessant buzzing of a phone woke me the next morning. I looked at the clock and saw it was only 7:00 am. I was going to kill Jean for calling this early, but then I realized it wasn't my phone. I reached behind me and hit Dean to wake him up. “Your phone keeps ringing. So when you answer it tell whoever it is that most people are asleep at this ungodly hour and to kindly fuck off.” Dean grunted as my arm hit him, but he rolled over and grabbed his phone leaving the room to answer the call of whatever strange creature thought it was normal to be up at 7 fucking o’clock in the morning. I closed my eyes and went back to sleep.

Thirty minutes later I wake up to the smell of coffee wafting under my nose. I peek open one eye and look at Dean. I was still unhappy, but the coffee kept me from saying anything too cruel. “This better be important since it’s so damn early.” I sat up and took a sip from the mug my eyes barely open. Dean chuckled as he took in my unhappy morning state, hair most likely all over the place. “That was my brother on the phone.” I let out a hum, why would I care that his brother called? Not like I knew the guy and he was disturbing my slumber. “Okay and your point is what exactly?” I took another sip of the coffee hoping he got to the point soon.

“Some town in Colorado had what looks to be a werewolf attack. Two victims with their hearts ripped out. Thought we could use your help,” Dean explained. I looked up at him with a raised brow wondering if he was actually serious about this and seeing he was I let out a sigh. “I don't know Dean, I generally hunt alone. Don't trust other hunters,” I told him. The green eyed hunter looked at me in confusion. “You trusted me enough to tell you where you live and to sleep with me.” He had thought they had at least some trust between them. “Oh cowboy, trust had nothing to do with it. You just got a good dick and know how to use it, but it does beg the question on why you showed up last night. I didn't actually think I would see you again. And had I known you were a hunter I wouldn't have told you were I live.” My location was something I liked keeping out of the hunting community; it had nothing to do with Dean himself.

Dean looked a little hurt at that, but quickly covered it up. “You said if I was in the area to swing by. So I swung by. Good thing I did.” Even I could admit he made a fair point. If he hadn't showed up the vampire might have killed me last night. I hadn't been prepared for her and she had caught me off guard. Maybe I should give him some trust, just a little. But I wasn't going to let him have it all. I barely knew him after all. Nor would I give him my heart like most girls probably had at this point. To me he was a good lay, possibly a friend and nothing more. I refused to let it be anything more. “Alright, alright. I'll come with you. Just give me a few minutes.” I finished my coffee and began packing a bag. Colorado was a good 16 hour drive for most. I knew though I could make it in about 11 if I pushed it. And I knew we would need to push it.

Once my bag was packed and I was dressed and ready to go, I met Dean in the living room who was sitting on the couch looking around. “So let me feed Bragi and let my neighbor know I'll be gone a few days and we can head out.” Dean gave me a confused look for a second and then realized I was talking about my dog which he hadn't met yet, but I knew he had to have heard the loud beast last night. “How bout I feed him and you go talk to the neighbors?” Dean offered. “Yeah why not. Food’s in the shed.” I pointed toward the backyard where the shed resided. He nodded and headed that way while I went to talk to Mrs. Ashworth next door.

When I came back and didn't see Dean inside I grew curious. Walking out back I leaned on the back deck’s railing and watched as he played fetch with my dog. I smiled softly watching the pair. Bragi didn't normally trust men as he had been abused as a pup and Dean seemed too serious to do such a thing. It was sweet and I actually felt my heart flutter just a little when Dean smiled at Bragi and scratched his ears. I shook my head and scolded myself. He was a hunter, I was a hunter. This would be nothing more than sex between us. “Come on Dean we need to hit the road.” I turned and went back inside expecting him to lock the door behind him. With keys and bag in hand I went to the garage.

I hop in my car and fire her up. The engine roars to life and I smile as I listen to it purr. Dean looks at her, with wide eyed awe and admiration. “She's beautiful. This is the ‘67 right? With the…”

“383 V8," I answer his unfinished question. "Heart here has 280 horsepower. And I love her.” I smiled up at him.

"Short for Queen of my Heart."

“Well, she is a beauty. Like to test her against Baby sometime. But we got a case.” He let out a disappointed sigh. I chuckled and hit the button to open the garage door. I moved the car to the driveway and parked long enough to get my motorcycle inside and then closed the garage and locked it. We were now ready to head to Fort Collins, Colorado.

And as I predicted Dean and I managed to shave time off the trip and pulled into the motel his brother had booked. Sam had ‘borrowed’ a car from the junk yard in Saint Cloud where Dean had apparently left him when he came to my place. I grabbed my bag and followed Dean to the room. It wasn't much; two beds, couple end tables, a small table with a coffee pot, and a dresser. I shrugged my shoulders and dropped my bag beside the couch. “Uh who's she?” I heard Sam ask.

“Rachelle and I'm the one who told you were the vamp nest was. I'm also boning your brother. Pleasure to meet you, Jolly Green.” I grinned at him. The bitch face I got in return possibly made this trip worth it.

“I guess having another hunter on board wouldn't hurt," Sam said, still eyeing me suspiciously. So get this, the two victims were on opposite sides of town, but their time of death was only minutes apart,” Sam said as he showed us the coroner's report. I looked over the pictures. With all the claw marks and the missing hearts we were definitely dealing with werewolves and more than one it would seem. “So any idea who it is? Or where they are?” I looked up at Sam. He nodded and gave me a notepad with a list of names. “So let's split the list and scope it out tonight. Hopefully we get big, bad, and hairy before they kill someone else.” I tore the paper and handed Dean some names as well as Sam and kept the rest for myself.

It was time to put an end to the big bad wolves.

DNA Tests Reveal Dug The Giant Potato is Not, in Fact, a Potato

(CNN) — Dug may not be the world's largest potato, but it's still pretty spudtacular.

When New Zealand couple Colin and Donna Craig-Brown first discovered the gigantic vegetable in their garden last August, they knew they had something special on their hands.

Dug is named for how the two of them unearthed it -- by digging.

They decided to submit Dug to Guinness World Records, and seven months and one DNA test later, they received some depressing news.

"Sadly the specimen is not a potato and is in fact the tuber of a type of gourd. For this reason we do unfortunately have to disqualify the application," a Guinness World Records spokesperson told the couple via email.

A tuber is an underground organic structure that stores water and helps plants regrow after winter or harsh weather, according to Amy Charkowski, professor and department head in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

Colin Craig-Brown enjoyed dressing Dug in different accessories and sharing the content on social media.

Hamilton resident Colin Craig-Brown, 62, was surprised to hear the DNA results and quickly got to work unraveling the mystery. After pouring over the data results provided by Guinness World Records, he discovered that Dug came from a choko, a starchy plant in their garden that looks like a wrinkly, green pear.

Charkowski hypothesized, however, that Dug may actually be a tuberous root, a storage root similar to a potato tuber, but lacks buds like the eyes on a potato. A choko, also known as chayote, grows from tuberous roots, according to the Wisconsin Master Gardener.

He was initially surprised since he had tried a raw sample of Dug that tasted identical to a potato, but further research revealed chokos can have a similar flavor. The revelation came as a relief to Craig-Brown, because he was confused as to how a gourd could have gotten into that side of his garden.

"At least I answered all the questions and don't need to lay awake at 3 in the morning trying to figure out what has gone wrong with Mother Nature," he said.

Life Above Ground

A longtime gardener, Craig-Brown found Dug when he was tending to his plants and struck a hard object under the soil.

After pulling out the monstrous vegetable, he was "gobsmacked" at the size -- 7.9 kilograms (17.4 pounds), to be exact.

The current potato record-holder is Peter Glazebrook, a United Kingdom resident who grew a spud weighing 4.98 kilograms (11 pounds) in 2011.

A little trolley was built to cart Dug around, and the "potato" quickly became the talk of the town, Craig-Brown said.

A couple weeks into Dug's life above ground, Craig-Brown noticed it was spoiling so he stored the coveted veggie in his freezer.

Dug may have garnered thousands of admirers around the globe, but the vegetable's biggest fans are Craig-Brown's grandchildren, he said.

"I open up the freezer, take him out of the packing bags, set him down and their little eyes pop open and their chins drop," Craig-Brown said.

A Future Filled with Potatoes

The world's heaviest potato award may still be on the horizon for Craig-Brown, even if it's not Dug.

"After getting ahold of all this scientific information, I'd at least give a crack at it myself," he said.

It won't be easy, though.

Multiple factors go into growing a giant potato that is at least 20 ounces (0.6 kilogram), according to Charkowski.

For optimal conditions, it should be a certified tuberous root of a russet variety that is free of disease, she said. The potatoes need to grow over a long season with cool nights no warmer than 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.4 degrees Celsius).

Craig-Brown hasn't settled on what he's going to do with Dug now that the tuber has been disqualified, but he may try to memorialize it.

"I'm going to make a mold of him, so I've got a Dug lookalike that's nonperishable so that maybe my grandchildren's grandchildren can look at it and see what their granddad did," he said.

What’s killing Mount Evans’ mountain goats? A research team is collecting their poop to solve the mystery.

MOUNT EVANS — Lance Carpenter is standing on a lichen-covered boulder somewhere around 13,000 feet, his binoculars zeroed in on the target: the backside of a mountain goat kid.

The goat is about 20 yards away, grazing alpine forbs alongside its nanny. Carpenter is keeping up a conversation, but his eyes are on the kid’s tail, waiting for it to rise and stick out horizontally.

The little guy is marked with a red dot on the side of its shaggy, white neck — a dot Carpenter put there a few weeks back with a paintball gun. This is how Carpenter, a wildlife biologist with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, knows that out of all 12 goats in this herd, he needs that kid’s poop.

Then it happens.

“Boom,” says Carpenter, who watches the goat’s poop drop to the ground and then keeps it in his line of sight as he quickly hikes downhill toward the herd.

Wearing blue rubber gloves, Carpenter gently drops the specimen into a sterile plastic bag. It’s the first of four goat scats he will collect during a nearly four-hour expedition at the top of Mount Evans last week. He considers that a successful day, since his goal is to bag one sample each from 20 different goats every month this summer.

The hope is that the samples will lead to solving a mystery that has stumped Colorado wildlife biologists for seven years: What is killing the mountain goat kids on Mount Evans?

Is it human-related?

Disease came to Mount Evans in 2013, and it wiped out nearly half of the mountain goat population in one season. Kids — which is what goats are called the first year of their lives — were struck so severely with diarrhea that their haunches were stained black.

The alpine terrain of Mount Evans and Mount Bierstadt, two neighboring 14,000-foot peaks, had about 110 mountain goats before the disease came in the summer of 2013. By the following spring, all but a couple of the kids had disappeared, and the goats numbered about 60.

A generation of goats was gone.

“It was like every kid we saw was having diarrhea,” Carpenter said. “Is it a bacteria, a parasite, a virus? Right now we just don’t know what it is.”

Colorado Parks and Wildlife performed two necropsies on goats that year and analyzed a couple of feces samples. But it wasn’t enough to go on, said Karen Fox, a CPW wildlife pathologist who did the necropsies.

The poop was loaded with E. coli bacteria, but what was more disturbing is that the goats had E. coli in their organs and bloodstreams. The bacteria had damaged their intestines and attacked their bodies. Fox, who works in a Parks and Wildlife lab in Fort Collins, is still trying to figure out why. Tests for at least a dozen specific viruses, bacteria, parasites and toxins came up negative.

One theory is that human waste — left behind by the tens of thousands of cyclists, hikers and visitors who cruise up Mount Evans every summer — was somehow sickening the goats.

So far, any evidence of that is circumstantial. But here is what else happened at Mount Evans in 2013.

The vault toilets at Summit Lake, a few paved switchbacks below the top of the 14,200-foot mountain, were leaking. When water quality experts from the Bear Creek Watershed tested the lake and nearby wetlands, called fens, they expected to find pristine water at the utility’s highest water source. Instead, they discovered surprisingly high amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and ammonia.

The fens, which serve as watering holes for goats, bighorn sheep, deer and marmots, also had unexpected amounts of red algae.

The water association had noticed elevated levels of nutrients at Mount Evans since 2009, but in 2013, it found a phosphorous discharge that could mean “potentially more total phosphorus discharged into Bear Creek than 10 out of 16 wastewater treatment plants discharge in an entire year,” according to a Bear Creek Watershed report.

And when crews pulled back the manhole covers on the bathrooms, they found that while the solids were contained, the liquid had seeped out, said Russell Clayshulte, manager of the Bear Creek Watershed Association.

Clayshulte and his team believe the high-elevation bathroom leakage was behind a toxic algae bloom downstream in Bear Creek, where greenback cutthroat trout were dying. They tracked one trout as it entered the creek. “Within three or four minutes, he went belly up,” Clayshulte said.

The vault toilets, operated by Denver Mountain Parks, were resealed. The water quality of Summit Lake improved, though it’s still not as clean as expected for an alpine lake.

And for the next five years, the disease that had killed off more than 20 mountain goat kids in 2013 was quiet. Carpenter saw only a few goat kids with diarrhea each year; the disease was still around, but at a low prevalence.

“Did they get better or did they go die? We don’t know,” he said. “Many times I would see them and I wouldn’t ever see them again.”

Carpenter made the tough decision to euthanize one goat kid in 2018 after realizing it wasn’t going to live much longer. “It would get up, and wobble and it would lie down,” he recalled. “All of the kids were running around jumping and playing and this guy, you could just tell, was not doing well at all.”

A necropsy again found loads of E. coli. But there were still so many questions — like what is the normal amount of E. coli for a mountain goat, was the bacteria coming from the environment, were its origins animal or human?

Each year, the annual July mountain goat survey — when Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff traipse across Mount Evans and Mount Bierstadt and attempt to count every goat — would show improvement. The population reached between 80 and 90 goats.

“And then in 2019, boom, we saw this again,” Carpenter said.

The diarrhea struck the goats again last fall, arriving so late in the season — in October — that wildlife biologists could hardly study the animals before the snow came. The goats were counted again this July, but Carpenter is still awaiting the results.

“This year we should have a bunch of yearlings,” he said, “and if we don’t, I’ll know that those kids didn’t make it.”

This summer, Carpenter returned to the mountain with a plan. He’s tracking 10 kids and 10 nannies with old collars and oil-based paint, the kind that doesn’t wash off in the rain or in the dust baths that goats give themselves, and he set about bagging their scat.

“The hope is that we can actually track it over time,” he said. “Right now we are collecting normal poop. And as it switches to diarrhea, we are going to be collecting that diarrhea, too. So we will have before and after.”

Carpenter creeps up Mount Evans Highway in his pickup truck, binoculars at his fingertips. When he finds a herd, he grabs his cooler and a hiking pole and follows the goats.

Carpenter has spent hours waiting for them to defecate. The father of two daughters jokes that the process reminds him of potty-training, because no one seems to go when you want them to, even when lightning is looming over the peak.

He’s particularly patient when the goats stop grazing and rest. “I know this sounds dorky,” he says, “but while they’re bedding down like this, when they get up, they will defecate.”

Often, a kid and its mom will rise at the same time, start walking, and both relieve themselves. This is when Carpenter’s hiking pole comes in handy. He marks one poop with the pole so he doesn’t lose track of it while he’s collecting the other one.

Each sample goes in a cooler with ice, then Carpenter sends it FedEx overnight to Fox, his research partner in the Fort Collins lab.

Fox saves a portion of each sample, properly labeled to identify the goat, in a freezer at Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The rest is sent to labs at Colorado State University and Texas A&M, where scientists look for everything from E. coli to worms to a parasite called coccidia.

The work is complicated because, for one thing, even healthy mountain goats have E. coli and coccidia, so that doesn’t explain why kids are dying, Fox said. She’s comparing the results of the wild goat poop with domestic goats, and other researchers around the country have offered to send her scat from healthy mountain goats.

The key, believes Fox, is figuring out why the goats’ intestines are breaking down and allowing the E. coli in their guts to spread throughout their bodies. “These little goats were very sick,” she said. “Ultimately, they had an E. coli infection that got into their blood. Presumably it was in their gut and something allowed it to get into their bloodstream.”

For the sake of solving the mystery and saving the mountain goats over the long term, Fox and Carpenter are hoping the diarrhea returns this year before the snow falls. And they’re hoping they have enough healthy and unhealthy samples to figure it out.

This summer, Mount Evans Highway is closed to vehicles because of the coronavirus pandemic — and the bathrooms are closed, too. The water quality in the high-elevation wetlands has somewhat improved, although Clayshulte with the Bear Creek Watershed remains concerned that the vault toilets leak.

And of course the closure of the toilets hasn’t stopped cyclists and hikers from having to go. For them, Carpenter has a public service announcement: If you poop in the woods, bury it at least 6 inches deep. And pack out your toilet paper. It’s too dry at that elevation for the paper to naturally break down, he said.

Mountain goats, searching for salt, lick the rocks and dig in the dirt where humans have peed. They even lick cars and crawl underneath them to find salt in the undercarriage. When Carpenter is not collecting poop samples, he spends time hazing goats by honking and clapping, and scaring them off with tasers and cattle prods.

At the summit last week, he warned cyclists who were taking selfies with the mountain goats to back off a few more feet. Carpenter says it’s for the good of the goats, which were introduced to the area (there is debate about whether they are native to Colorado) in 1961.

“People come from all over the world here to Mount Evans just to look at mountain goats or sheep,” he said. “Literally all over the world.”
