Episode Recap of "Highs and Lows"
First Aired August 18, 2020
"Jinger and Jeremy share the sad news that they have miscarried their baby. In Arkansas, Ben has second thoughts as he undergoes eye surgery. Jeremy throws Jinger a surprise party filled with some unexpected guests and a special gift."
Can they laser my eyes out after watching this episode?
 1. In la la land, Jinger talks about having a miscarriage the night after the jingerbread building contest. She's sad and does that dainty Jingerish way of wiping tears from her eyes. Jeremy says it's been hard on him but admits it must be harder on Jinger. He's a smart one right there.
2. Ben's getting laser eye surgery to correct his horrible eyesight. I'm guessing TLC paid for some or most of the surgery since they filmed it and possibly the business gave them a break for advertising reasons. Hey TLC! Want to fim my lasik surgery? My eyes are as crappy as Ben's and I'll be way more dramatic than him. Ben was too boring. He just laid there and took it. I'm sure a doctor will go down after they try to put a laser near my eyes. But I really do want the surgery and I'll pay for it myself. I just need someone to pay the lawyer fees. Jim Bob claims to have cured his aging poor vision somehow which confuses me. Maybe he can cure Michelle's too since we often seen her wearing reading glasses. Ben and Jessa and kids arrive at the surgery center together for the short procedure. Jessa keeps her kids calm not with electronics anymore but with constant snacking. She really needs to stop that. Placating your kids with food isn't healthy. Get a momma's bag full of special toys or activities for those times they need to wait. I'm not mom shaming! I've worked with young kids for longer than most of you have been alive, so hush! Jessa's kids only had to wait 20 or 30 minutes. They didn't need a three course meal of junk while waiting. I really want to be super nanny for some of these reality show moms. I'll straighten these parents out. How do I apply? After the procedure they ask Ben to read what time it is on an analog clock and he has no clue. I guess he missed that day of homeschooling. TLC never did come back and ask Ben how his eyesight was the next day. That storyline just stopped here.
3. Jeremy is throwing a surprise party for Jinger's 26th birthday. The party is being held at his church friends' house and a portrait of Jinger and Felicity was commissioned to be painted by another church friend and all the party goers are church friends and family. Sounds like pompous fun! Jana and her gal pal, Laura, Ben and Jessa, and Pops and Lolli make it out to la la land for the party. Jinger is distracted from the preparations by taking a photography class with Laura Norcia. I'm not sure if she is a member of the church too but the girl escorting Jinger to the class is. Can't have Jinger do something on her own. They do iPhone photography and then get to work in a darkroom. This brings back a ton of memories for me. I don't remember much about high school but I do remember spending most of my time in the darkroom. I even built my own darkroom at home. Those were the days of feeding film negatives onto spools in complete darkness and hanging photos up to dry. It's sad those days are now gone.
4. When Jinger gets home Jeremy tells her to get dressed up and to wear heels because he's taking her on a date. Meanwhile, John and Abbie and Joy and Austin double date on a horse and carriage ride in Fayetteville. They chat about stuff and then get hot chocolate. Back to the party. Jinger is wearing a fur stole just to make sure everyone in California realizes she isn't one of them. She's an animal carcass wearing, earth beating, Trump voting Arkansas vampire. But the blindfold Jeremy forces her to wear on the "date" makes them seem more kinky than conservative.  They arrive at the house, everyone yells surprise and they drink something suspicious. See photo. Jim Bob was drinking it too so don't get your hopes up that it was beer or champagne. Then they reveal that god-awful painting which I've mentioned in a previous post. Actually, I can't blame the artist. After seeing the photo that she painted it from, it was actually a good likeness. It was the photo was horrible.  It was such a fancy birthday party for a 26 year old. When I was her age, I would have been happy with casual restaurant dinner and a concert or Broadway show. No way would I have been happy all dressed up in a room with stuffy church people. Even my aunt, the nun, would have been bopping it with me at some concert. Jinger, 26 going on 66.
5. TLC arranges for Jinger, Jana, Laura and Michelle to go out for coffee together so they could dwell on Jinger's miscarriage. Jinger daintily dabs at her eyes the whole scene because no one will drop the topic and shut the F up. Oh, now she's wearing what looks like a real leather jacket. A very expensive one at that. Maybe they need to start thinking about themselves so much and think about those animal mamas whose babies were killed so pompous people can wear them as nonessential clothing.  Geez, I need a freaking drink after watching this crap and I don't even drink!!! How can Jesus people piss me off so badly? That's not how it's supposed to work.

I walk down the street
I walk down the street, face furled tight Like one does in London, or New York Focused inward, controlled flight Just enough awareness to avoid disaster
Silent, anonymous, slipping through the world
This doesn’t work in Dublin Everyone knows everyone, even the tourists, even me A pint becomes a night becomes a lifetime
Upon reflection, it doesn’t work in New York either Too many of my people here The odds are never in my favor
Or San Francisco, but that’s my fault In very small circles I’m recognized Those circles just circulate widely
Or London, come to think of it Although maybe if I left Shoreditch? Or stopped drinking pear cider?
Or Austin, but that’s a small town Everyone goes to Barton Springs when it’s hot, and it’s always hot
Finally invisible in the Seattle Chill In SLU passing 5 people I once knew (Which was fine, I didn’t like any of them) But the 62 driver says “honey, where you been?” (She’s not from around here; she uses her horn. I loved her for it.)
I’ve a forgettable face No beauty, flat cheekbones, soft jaw Often idly frowning
I change my hair constantly Yet they pick me out of a crowd Even those years later
“It’s the eyes, honey” — which makes no sense I’m always wearing glasses Surely mistaken identity I must have a double I bet she’s funnier though, or had LASIK
Still, I keep trying for cool Walking down the street, face furled tight Peeking out the corners of shaded eyes Eavesdropping through headphone camouflage
Silent, anonymous, slipping through the world

Hello!
I wanted to reach out to the Tumblr community for help. I’m trying to help raise funds so my boyfriend can get Lasik eye surgery.
Please note that this is not an emergency situation. Lasik eye surgery is considered to be cosmetic and is a relatively mild procedure for some doctors. However, it is essential that Austin get Lasik if he wishes to join the Navy and become an Underwater Demolition Officer.
Since he was young, Austin has wanted to sign up with the United States Military. Specifically, he wants to join the Navy. After he graduates college, Austin is going directly to boot camp. After boot camp, Austin wants to join the Underwater Demolitions team. For that, he needs Lasik. He’s been saving every bit he can, but he’s still a little short on funds.
Currently, Austin and I are both full-time college students. Austin is working towards a degree in Aerospace Engineering, and I myself am studying Criminology and Accounting. Unfortunately, that has left little time for an extra job or a social life. Austin ubers occasionally and does medical studies when he can, but sometimes life simply gets in the way. He’s been at the library for up to 12 hours a day either studying or completing homework/lab/project assignments.
I really want to help him get Lasik eye surgery so that he can follow his dreams (which sounds cheesy and cliched as hell, but it’s the damn truth). What can I say? I love him.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wellness Wednesday with Jackman Eye
Tumblr media
While January may come with extra emphasis on wellness - #DryJanuary, #NewYearNewMe - we’re looking to carry our initial New Year enthusiasm with us through the entire year (and decade!). So, we sat down with a few of our Volume 7 experts to talk about their approaches to health + wellness.
Next up in our series is Dr. Madison Huser of Jackman Eye, the Rosedale optometry practice located on 39th street with lots of parking (oh, the things we get excited about these days…). A graduate of the University of Texas, Dr. Huser is a huge Longhorn fan - a love that her husband and two daughters also share. When she’s not caring for the eyesight of Austinites, she’s at home in Dripping Springs or enjoying the great outdoors with a jog around Townlake. With the start of a new year, we talked to her about eyesight + eye health that will have all of us heading into 2020 with 20/20 vision (pun very much intended)!
TSG: Happy New Year + Cedar Season! Do you have any secrets for tackling itchy eyes during Austin’s notorious allergy seasons? Dr. Huser: Happy New Year to you, TSG! Optometrists have been waiting for the year 2020 for a long time, so get ready for a year full of vision-related puns! But, 2020 has also been a rough start for cedar sufferers, including myself! For relief, I turn to my favorite over the counter antihistamine eye drops, Zaditor and Alaway. I also like using cold artificial tears like Refresh Optive or Blink to dilute and rinse out allergens. To address swelling around the eyes, cold compresses do the trick! And for red eyes, I use a new over-the-counter eye drop called Lumify. It makes your eyes look whiter, so you can look more presentable for work or special occasions! If this doesn’t alleviate your itchy eyes, a stronger prescription antihistamine or steroid eye drop is required. Hopefully oak season is kinder to us!
TSG: What about year-round… How can we take care of our eyes + eyesight daily? Dr. Huser: An easy way to incorporate at home eye care into your daily routine is to clean your eyelids properly.  It may sound really gross, but small mites can sometimes live on our eyelashes causing red, itchy eyes.  The glands that keep our eyes lubricated also can become clogged and lead to styes and dry eyes.  I recommend the We Love Eyes product line.  They have many great products for men and women that are vegan, cruelty, gluten and paraben-free.  I use the Tea Tree makeup removing oil and foaming cleanser after washing my face at night.  They use tea tree oil, jojoba oil and grapeseed oil to naturally kill bacteria, improve inflammation and keep pores clean.
Tumblr media
TSG: Speaking of year-round, how often should we visit the optometrist? Does it vary depending on one’s quality of vision? Dr. Huser: Annual eye exams are recommended regardless of age or quality of vision. On the younger side, children often do not know what their vision is supposed to look like and school screenings do not check the health of the eyes.  A comprehensive exam also checks for eye alignment or focusing disorders that can lead to learning difficulties.   Yearly eye exams are especially important over 40 to identify age-related eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.  Even those lucky enough to not need prescription eyewear should take a proactive approach to their eye health.  Early detection is key to preventing vision loss because many visually devastating eye diseases do not have any symptoms!
TSG: And for those who are familiar with the optometrist but are looking to trade in their frames or contact lenses - how do they know if they’re a good candidate for Lasik? Dr. Huser: Lasik is a great way to become independent from glasses and contacts - an enticing thing for a city of active people.  The best way to determine if you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation to speak to a doctor about your options.  An ideal candidate has had a stable prescription for several years, their prescription falls within certain limits and overall has healthy eyes.
TSG: We love your holistic approach to eye health - what are the most important lifestyle habits you suggest for promoting eye health? Dr. Huser: I love this question! The eye may or may not be the window to the soul, but it is definitely the window to your overall health.  The way eyes reflect and indicate health is one of the reasons I became interested in optometry. Changes in the eyes can indicate high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, cancer, inflammatory and autoimmune disease. Many of the same activities that promote overall health also are good for our eyes.  A few of the most important activities are eating healthy, exercising, sleeping well, taking breaks with device use, quit smoking and protecting your eyes from the sun.
TSG: Are there any lifestyle habits we should avoid? Dr. Huser: Smoking! I know that it’s an obvious answer, but smoking increases the risk of developing blinding eye diseases and causes uncomfortable dry eyes.
TSG: What about dietary tips, tricks and recipes for eye-health, we loved your Strawberry Green Smoothie! Dr. Huser: Try to incorporate omega 3 fatty acids, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin E and vitamin C These nutrients protect against eye disease and improve quality of vision. P.S. you can get these in fish, leafy veggies, nuts and veggies like broccoli and brussel sprouts, respectively!
Tumblr media
TSG: It doesn’t seem like screen-time will become any less ubiquitous in 2020, are there ways to lessen the negative impact of staring at a screen all day? How do we know if our screentime is affecting our eyesight? Dr. Huser: You may have heard of the popular 20/20/20 rule.  Optometrists recommend taking breaks from your screen every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds by looking at something over 20 feet away.  When we do any focused work or screen time we rarely blink causing our eyes not produce tears and become drier.  The distance at which we hold screens also is very tiring to our eyes.  The closer our working material, the harder it is for our eyes to stay in the right alignment.  Screen-time may be affecting your eyesight if you are getting headaches especially over the eyes, neck or shoulder tension or have burning or watering of your eyes.
TSG: Should we all be wearing blue light frames? Dr. Huser: The answer is maybe… The evidence that blue light disrupts our sleep cycles is very strong.  If you work on a computer, check your phone or watch TV 1-2 hours before bed blue light glasses are beneficial for improving sleep.  There is also some evidence that blue light glasses protect the delicate cells inside the eye and improve comfort at the computer, but these benefits are less studied.
TSG: Speaking of frames, you carry quite a few at Jackman Eye - do you have any favorites for 2020? Dr. Huser: Our newest line, Etnia Barcelona, is a favorite of mine.  Their newest campaign focuses on the importance of unique over perfect.  They use David Bowie as a representation of this value and even have frames designed in his memory.   Drawing inspiration from art and photography allows them to design frames that function well and are fashion-forward.  They have fun colors and styles that feel very wearable for everyday life.  I have already purchased two pairs for myself!
Make sure to take Dr. Huser’s advice and schedule an eye exam at Jackman Eye to help start you 2020 with 20/20 vision!
