Me in my stylish post eye dilation sunglasses but a cartoon version courtesy of PicsArt. It's like part of my glasses are melting.
Today was follow up at the retinal specialist practice. Two weeks ago on Friday, I had my initial consultation. I knew from about 10 years of OptoMap retinal pictures, that I had some small holes in my retinas. The waiting room was filled with people at least 15 years older than me if not more. I'm sure folks who came in after thought I was somebody's designated driver.
The initial visit consisted of a visual acuity check (20/20 with my glasses), eye pressure check, and additional pictures of both retinas. Then the doctor examined me. I mentioned to him that on occasion over the past 3 or 4 weeks, I had seen a black spot off to my right in my peripheral vision of my right eye, but I had not seen it during that past week. That was alarming to him. I could tell by his body language and how his voice slightly changed
As he checked the retinas of both my eyes, he noted both were thin and both were experiencing degeneration. My right eye had a round retinal break without a detachment. He told me I needed laser surgery that day to prevent a retinal detachment.
I was shocked.
I have a fear of anything going into my eyes. I would never consider Lasik surgery because of that. To learn that a focused laser would be going into my right eye freaked me the fuck out. I texted Unfriendly to let him know and he didn't realize I was getting eye surgery that day.
They prepped me for the procedure - retinal laser photocoagulation. I think I got some kind of numbing drops. The machine looked similar to this
Tumblr media
He placed a contact lens into my eye to help focus the laser. He let me know that right after I wouldn't be able to see out of that eye for about 15 minutes. He said there might be some discomfort.
What's interesting is reading up on the treatment at various websites for ophthalmologists. Most say no pain to minor pain. Y'all. It felt like there was a headache growing in my eye during the treatment. It got really intense. I don't think I could've blinked with that eye but I kept them both open and I kept REALLY still. The entire time I was yelling inside my head that there was a laser beam in my EYE and motherfucker it hurt, but better that than a retinal detachment and possible blindness.
He said I was doing outstanding during the procedure and afterwards he told me that someone must have been looking out for me because I could've suffered a retinal detachment at any moment. I asked if there was anything I could do to help thicken my retinas and no. That's just my genetic luck.
After about 10 minutes, I peeked with my right eye and I could see. Since both eyes were dilated, things were blurry up close. My eye was throbbing but I could only associate the pain with a bad headache that affects your eyes. I got queasy. I waited in the darkened dilation waiting room until the nausea passed and the pain eased up a bit. Luckily ibuprofen took care of that when I got home.
He was very comforting and very skilled. When I looked him up after the fact, I saw he went to both Harvard medical school and did a fellowship at Columbia.
I'm all healed up today and have to go back in two months for a check up. He did mention that if I ever do suffer a retinal detachment, it will be hairy because my retinas are so thin. Ugh. That's future Marilyn's problem.

other glow up tips?
My Experience with Lasik Eye Surgery (Trans-PRK).
Tumblr media
Investing in laser eye surgery was one of my most important parts of my physical glow up. My eyes are my best features, they're pretty, big round, dark brown, but didn't exactly work (5 dioptries). Either way, you couldn't tell because they were either hidden behind a frame of glasses, blodshot and half-closed due to lenses, or covered by extremely unnatural looking bright blue color contacts (God please forgive me). I ditched them all, got them lasered and look and feel 100% better.
Lenses.
I hate them. All the times I dropped and lost them, all the times my eyes would turn watery the moment I put them on, and the one time it got stuck in my eye and I couldn't find it and almost had a panic attack. This is my own experience, I'm not an ophthalmologist, so take this with a grain of salt (or two) and do your own research please. I'm here to share my own personal experience. My eyes used to start tearing like crazy just with soft breezes of wind and at times it was hard to keep my eyes open even though I followed all instructions. Lenses made my eyes look hooded as well and after getting my eyes lasered they don't have that droopy look, my eye area looks so much more open and awake now. I hated the discomfort, the redness, the sensitivity, having to put them on, having to put them out, having them. There could be a million explanations for these but it was just easier for me to get my eyes lasered and call it a day.
The surgery.
You put on your surgical gown and a hair cap, you lay down, they give you local anesthesia so you can't feel any pain in your eye. Laser beam for 10 seconds (felt more like 10 minutes). The surgery itself does not feel painful, just extremely uncomfortable, you can't close or move your eyes for 10 seconds, my surgeon counted back from 10 but I swear it felt like an eternity. I cried while they were lasering my eyes because I always do and I kept pinching myself and shaking my legs because I felt very nervous and was probably PMSing, but there is no actual pain, just intense discomfort and pressure, the actual pain only comes after the anesthesia wears off after a few hours, I would say it is a 7.5/10, you wear black goggles for 2 weeks, your eyes sting like crazy, it's like having dry eyes 24/7 for 2 weeks. And then 2 weeks later you wake up and your eyes actually work (miracle). I remember taking them off for the first time after weeks and being absolutely shocked about how well I could see (and at how terrible my eyebrows looked).
1 year later...
I wake up, I have 10/10 vision, and I love it. I feel like I can see better now than ever, I don't have to deal with eye sensitivities due to lenses, or worry about accidentally sitting on my glasses, I feel prettier too. There's another thing that feels very hard for me to describe, but I feel like I am directly living in the world, I feel more in touch with the world, my lenses and glasses always felt like a barrier. After your surgery, you need to wear sunglasses for 6 months. Not an issue, you should protect your eyes in any case and protecting them from the sun's UV rays has always been essential for me regardless. They need to be big especially on the sides so your eyes are protected.
To sum it up, here are my tips:
Go to a very reputable doctor at a specialized eye clinic. My doctor had 25 years of experience and over 50 000 cases.
Take all the medications that you are prescribed post-surgery and follow all instructions, focus on healing after your surgery.
Invest in a pair of high-quality UV blocking sunglasses. No, that chewed up pair from H&M you got 2 years ago won't cut it.
Reduce screen time, blue light blocking filters are your best friend. Make sure you have a support person.
You need to go to a highly reputable place obviously, you can't cheap out unless you have another pair of eyes, your doctor needs to be very experienced and good at what he does, use what resources you have to read up on your doc and his work, his ratings should be very high and of people who are happy with their results. My mom, my aunt, my grandpa all got LASIC eye surgery 20 years ago so naturally, I followed in their eye steps because they were all happy with their results. You need a support person, my parents were right with me during and after the surgery, my mom picked out the hospital and doctor for me and I could not go out of bed for 2 weeks so make sure you have some good podcasts ready and take at least 2 weeks off.
Feel free to message me or drop an ask if you have any questions.

This is my summer 2023 view. My eyes are still messed up and I’m experiencing the possibility of never having clear vision again after LASIK surgery. I’ve got some options that might improve my vision, so I’m hopeful that my vision will improve, but it’s a wait and “see” situation and I have to tell you, this is scary. My eyesight has always been middling poor, but I can’t read and books are so much a part of my self-identity. This is the first time my health has felt out of my control and I’m struggling with how I might have to adapt. So I go to my poor woman’s pool, light my candles, drink my wine, and listen to music that makes me cry bc those tears feel so good on my fucked up eyes. Blurry tree shadows and flickering candle light make sense to my brain and fuzzy eyes. So I get naked, add a splash of Florida water, light my candles and ask my deities and spirits to help me see clearly. This is hard shit. I might be okay given time, but in this moment, in this one-eyed Cyclopian world view, I’m worried. If you feel compelled, a little healing energy towards me would not be unappreciated. I’m going to be okay, no matter what, because I’m a fucking punk bitch, but I wouldn’t say no to some good mojo coming my way right now. 🖤🖤🖤

Smile Eye Surgery: Everything You Need to Know
Introduction
Welcome to our blog post on SMILE eye surgery! In this article, we will cover everything you need to know about this revolutionary procedure. Whether you are considering getting SMILE eye surgery or simply curious about this type of laser vision correction, you've come to the right place.
What is SMILE Eye Surgery?
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a minimally invasive laser eye surgery technique used to correct nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism. It is an innovative alternative to traditional LASIK surgery, offering numerous advantages.
Tumblr media
How Does SMILE Eye Surgery Work?
During SMILE eye surgery, your eye surgeon will use a femtosecond laser to create a small, precise incision in the cornea. A tiny lenticule is then removed from within the cornea, reshaping it to correct the refractive error. The whole procedure is performed through this small incision, without the need for a flap like in LASIK.
Advantages of SMILE Eye Surgery
Here are some key advantages of SMILE eye surgery over traditional LASIK:
Minimally invasive: SMILE eye surgery requires only a small incision, leading to faster healing and reduced risk of complications.
Flapless procedure: Unlike LASIK, SMILE does not involve creating a corneal flap, which means less disruption to the cornea and reduced risk of dry eyes.
Safer for certain patients: SMILE is a suitable option for patients with thin corneas or a higher risk of corneal complications.
Quick recovery time: Many patients experience a faster recovery after SMILE eye surgery, with less post-operative discomfort.
Is SMILE Eye Surgery Right for You?
To determine if you are a suitable candidate for SMILE eye surgery, consult with a qualified eye surgeon. They will evaluate your eye health, prescription, and medical history to determine if SMILE or another procedure is the best option to meet your vision correction goals.
Conclusion
In conclusion, SMILE eye surgery is a cutting-edge laser vision correction procedure that offers several advantages over traditional LASIK. If you are considering vision correction surgery, it's worth exploring SMILE as a treatment option. Consult with an experienced eye surgeon to determine the best course of action based on your individual needs and circumstances.
We hope this blog post has provided you with valuable insights into SMILE eye surgery. If you have any further questions or would like to schedule a consultation, feel free to contact us. Our team of experts is always ready to assist you on your journey to better vision.

LASIK EYE SURGERY WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT WORK
If you're fed up of wearing either glasses or contact lenses or find it inconvenient to have change between both or both, then LASIK (Laser-Assisted with In-Situ Keratomileusis) surgical procedure for your eyes could be exactly what you require. This is a sort of refractive surgery that seeks to treat far-sightedness, near-sightedness, and astigmatism, and it's become one of the most requested surgical procedures around the globe.
If you're considering Laser Lasik Treatment in Thane You may want to talk with an Eye Specialist Doctor from Thane as well as Dr. Ruchika Kedia , who will explain the procedure, and determine if it's suitable for your eyes.
What is LASIK Eye Surgery?
(Lasik Laser Treatment in Thane)
LASIK eye surgery involves reshaping the cornea, which is the transparent front of the eye, so that light enters the eye and is focused on the retina at the side in the back of your eye. It is accomplished by specific lasers that strips tiny portions of corneal tissue, thereby changing the shape of the cornea.
The procedure will begin. Your doctor will utilize a computer to produce a precise plan of your cornea. They will determine the exact amount of corneal tissue that needs to be removed to achieve the desired correction. They will then use an instrument that is called a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser to make a small and hinged flap over the cornea's surface. The flap then is removed to expose the corneal tissues, and then the laser can be used to shape it.
When the cornea has been reshaped, the flap is moved and then left to heal itself naturally. Because the cornea is capable of healing on its own so there's usually no need for stitches or bandages.
Tumblr media
What's the Process? LASIK Eye Surgery Work?
LASIK eye surgery is performed by altering the shape of the cornea to correct refractive error. Refractive issues occur when the design of the eye blocks the light from focusing properly onto the retina. This can lead to blurred or discolored vision.
(Eye specialist physician in Thane)
If you suffer from near-sightedness or myopia the cornea can be high or the eye isn't long enough, leading light to be focused ahead of the retina instead of it. LASIK eye surgery can correct this by flattening the cornea.
Tumblr media
In farsightedness or hyperopia, the cornea may be too smooth or the cornea is too narrow, causing light to focus on the retina rather than upon the retina. LASIK eye surgery can rectify this by making your cornea steeper.
Tumblr media
The cornea in astigmatism is shaped in an odd way, leading to distortion of vision across all distances. LASIK eye surgery may correct this problem by smoothing the imperfections in the cornea.
Eye surgery with LASIK is a secure and efficient option to increase your eye's vision and lessen your dependency on contact lenses or glasses. However, it is important to speak with an experienced eye specialist doctor in Thane for instance, Dr Ruchika Kedia in order to establish whether LASIK is right for you. You should also discuss the possible benefits and risks of the procedure.

Heading into evening, we caught a bus into central Malmö to brave the cobblestones around Triangeln.
The main mission objective: to finally get set up with new glasses!
It's been worse to try to wear my existing prescription since that surgery, with a big enough change in that eye that the Now Very Wrong Lens is making me seasick and triggering migraines. So I've mostly just been going around without any.
Tumblr media
Neither of us was sure where to go, so I decided to try out Eyes + More this time. They are NOT Specsavers, which is all over the place in Sweden too. Plus, they're offering decent-looking package deals which include the option of progressive lenses for less than we would end up shelling out elsewhere. Because I am old and needing them these days. 🥴
Also, they are offering 4-pair package deals to split between two people. He was also needing new glasses, so may as well try there. We went ahead and booked back-to-back exam appointments.
Other than trying to operate on Language Mode: Difficult in a rather busy optical shop with shitty hearing in the first place, it started off pretty well. I browsed and found several good frame candidates while Mr. C went back for his vision exam.
Then it was my turn. Which also started out fine. Especially after I finally cried uncle and fessed up about my limited Swedish skills. (Which no doubt were becoming rather obvious, even before I opened my mouth for more than a few basic phrases. 🙄)
Went through the whole lens-flipping routine and all--and then complications ensued!

This is my current prescription, y'all.
The astigmatism had stayed about the same, at least. With that aftermarket lens replacement, though? They did indeed make my right eye significantly less nearsighted. As in, no correction required for distance vision at all. (Previously, it was just a little worse than the other one. The sudden change still feels weird as hell, after all these years.)
So yeah, the upshot is that now I am pretty damned nearsighted in one eye, and not at all in the other. Easy enough to fix with new prescription lenses, right?
Hahaha, NOPE. 😵
That degree of difference is evidently optically impossible to correct with glasses, unless you want some gnarly double vision. As the optometrist demonstrated with these babies.

I wondered why she was doing whatever trial lens magic that caused the freaky double vision, and then asking me about it. Then she basically just "yupped!", and explained the situation. 😩
I had kinda already had to wonder about some of the questions she was asking about the surgery, who did it, and whether I was sure they weren't planning to do something on the other side too. But indeed, all was explained soon enough.
She was obviously of the experienced professional opinion that some questionable decisions were made there. Trying to be at least semi-diplomatic about it or not. Seemed pretty horrified, tbqh.
So yeah, no new glasses for me right yet!
The current plan is to do as the optometrist strongly recommended, and Mr. C is going to try to get the eye surgery clinic on the phone ASAP tomorrow.
I am honestly still too worn out and brain fried to have looked into possible options yet. That will have to wait at least until later tonight.
Right offhand, I would rather end up having to pay for LASIK or similar out of pocket than let the same university clinic fuck around any more with my other eye if I can help it at all. That may well end up being my best bet, but we'll have to see.
