Here is my delayed but finalized 2018 EP list!

Princess Nokia- For this EP, Princess Nokia switched to an emo rap style popular on Soundcloud. I thought I wouldn’t like or even understand this EP because I don’t listen to Soundcloud rap, I didn’t really have Fueled by Ramen fever in middle school, and I never liked nu metal (which Princess Nokia says this EP is inspired by but I don’t personally hear it). I listened to the songs ironically until they began to grow on me. Those warbly vocals. The repeated Smash my heart to pieces line. How For the Night sounds like Frere Jacques instrumentally. And now I can proudly say it holds my top spot in my 2018 EP list. I’d like to say something about “in a world where we’re always told to look like we’re unbothered and #winning and other people are always pressed, Princess Nokia tells us it’s okay to feel normal human emotions” but that’s not close. 2018 was the year of Princess Nokia for me, so it’s only natural her new EP would be my favorite. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be with a wink and a nudge but let’s ask all the other Soundcloud rappers first.  

Kilo Kish- While Kilo Kish’s sound is the epitome of chill, her lyrics are bizarrely accurate portraits of millennial anxiety and contemplations. This time, she changes her ambient spoken word poems for outsider electronic music that is neither PC music nor generic tropical house. In one interview, she said that her biggest regret was that she didn’t go as experimental as she could’ve on this project, so here’s to wondering what the multi hyphenate will do for her next project.  

Ojerimie- I feel like 2018 is the year that alt r&B became oversaturated. Personally, I think as long as there will be sad and lonely late night texters, there will be an audience for musicians who can’t always sing, use electronic production, and claim to be influenced by Sade. Artists like The Weeknd and Beyonce who used to receive more commercial attention (or at least better first week numbers) were unable to meet previously set high expectations; Drake, who set the tone for alt r&b in 2011, turned out to be a secret father, cementing his status as f***boi supreme with several years of worst behavior including streaming schemes, Spotify takeovers, cultural appropriation, mental health misstatements, age gaps, and celebrating human traffickers, showing us that sensitive isn’t always good. Genre gentrifiers like Disclosure, The 1975, Justin Timberlake, Years and Years, and Ryan Hemsworth left to do other sounds; critical darlings like Blood Orange and The Internet have less hype for their albums this time around, newcomer Jorja Smith was completely clowned upon by Twitter for her vocals, and artists like Zayn, Tinashe, and Indiana all had albums all pushed back and compromised (all on Sony), so hearing a newcomer have late night red wine R&B music is a great pleasure. Highlights include drum and bass 2003, 80’s sophisti pop sounding Heat, and camming theme song 4U. Do yourself a favor and check out her great back catalogue as well.

Ravyn Lenae- I listened to Ravyn’s EP back in February, but what made me really remember her now was her performance on the now cancelled Rundown with Robin Thede on BET. Not only was it a good place for politics, but also a good venue for smaller artists. SNL is only decent for white hipster bands so it’s nice for black artists who aren’t that huge yet to have places to perform on television. Ravyn is from the Chicago scene and has put out 2 projects before this. EP highlights include the chill Night Song, the uplifting Sticky, and her stellar collaborations with Steve Lacy. With catchy hooks, sweet vocals, and a short track list that leaves you craving for more, Ravyn Lenae is the real Sweetener of 2018.

Hatchie- I once read that shoegaze and noise pop are popular because the whirring and noises from the guitars make it sound like people are talking, which makes people feel less lonely. I can’t say whether or not that’s true as a fact, but I can admit that Hatchie does make me feel happy. The shoegazer from the South has toured with Kylie Minogue and worked with Robin Guthrie already. Her songs have a joyful warmth to them and remind me of 90’s artists like The Cranberries, Drop Nineteens, and Madder Rose. Don’t incubate- hatch today.

Disclosure- I once read about the 2nd album UK artist curse, where an artist who had a specific UK niche tries to go too general for their sophomore album and end up losing everyone, with Katy B and Duffy being some examples of it. I still loved Caracal by Disclosure, but other people thought it was just a straightforward pop album rather than a forward thinking electronic album. Then another bad EP in 2016 made me lose interest in them until their new EP this year. It’s more sample heavy and very retro inspired but I think anyone would like it, but in a good way and not like Maroon 5.

Kitten- 2 years after their most recent EP, Kitten is back with their first fan funded project. Truth be told, I don’t really see why their had to be an independent label, because it stays in the same 80’s goth synthpop atmosphere as their previous songs. That doesn’t mean it’s derivative, but I’d like to know what happened at the label. Tracks include the Halloweenish Pink Champagne, the Robert Smith sounding I Did It!, and the vulnerable Abigail.

Kaytranada- More straightforward R&B/synth than his albums and remixes but good stuff to chill to.

Childlike Sound- I’ll be honest and say that I don’t know too much about them. I always saw @emoblackthot promote them on Twitter which encouraged me to try them out. Although they’re self produced, they go above and far beyond most bedroom pop acts. Some of their songs sound nu disco while others would fit right in on Solange’s True. Remember, why act grown when you can be Childlike?

St Beauty- A duo of singer songwriters on Janelle Monae’s label, St Beauty released a promising debut EP this year. Maybe this is because I had no expectations, but I preferred this to Dirty Computer because they were more concise and didn’t try too hard with the concept. I enjoyed Stone Mountain, a niece to Cranes in the Sky by Solange. Tides is a nice pseudo trip hop song (well, at least it sounds more trip hop than whatever the hell Morcheeba and Hooverphonic have been putting out for a decade), and Colors is a nice summery dancehall song.

Channel Tres- He joins Princess Nokia’s Versace Hottie as the only non Azealia Banks or Drag Race contestant hip house song that came out after the year 2000 and is actually good. Minimal camp value though, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Shygirl- Bombastic club music perfect for a night out or the last night on earth. A cross between Jlin and Charli XCX, has enough bite in it to keep you going the whole night. Bring your steel toe boots.

Yuno- How someone this catchy flew past me is a complete mystery, but I’m glad I know about him now. If you liked when Tame Impala remixed Miguel, you would enjoy this. It’s perfect enough to soundtrack your summer to, or at least a soundtrack for cruise line commercials and martinis in a can. Some slight unconventional moments like pitched vocals.

The Marias- Lofi, chill, jazzy, summer, outdoorsy music. I’m still waiting for an a ha moment song but for now, I’m enjoying the nice psychedelic vibes that they give me.

Alina Baraz- I was almost finished with this list, but I thought 14 was an ugly number and some Russian collusion lead me to putting Alina Baraz on my EP list! I didn’t listen to this too much yet, but I can always appreciate minimal electronic music with pleasant vocals and decent features, especially now that Sabrina Fraudio has been exposed.

2017 IS A RAP.

It starts with a great beat...

Then an interesting voice...

Followed by lyrics that lure the listener in, either through being clever or catchy (and in special cases, both!)....maybe the flow is enticing, or there’s a hook you can’t get out of your head? And then there’s the artist’s imagination, or even something more difficult to describe, it can only be felt...a certain “it” factor. 

All of the songs on my list include some combination of the aforementioned qualities. 2017 was an amazing year for hip-hop - one of the best ever, in my opinion. It was a truly historic year for the genre, as it continued to divide up into more and more sub-genres. This of course lead to a staggering number of debates, the “old heads” versus the “youngins”, the “LIT” crowd vs. the boom-bap preservationists. At the end of the day, that is why we all put time into these lists, isn’t it?

Rap music in 2017 was diverse, at times brilliant, at times contagious for reasons that were both humorous and infuriating, but as we countdown the days until the ball drops, I hope we can all look back at all of the special examples of art that could only come from a globally challenging year such as this one. So let’s get to it, my personal picks for the Top 71 Rap Songs of 2017....

Bonus (just cuz - yeah I totally cheated): “Dodge Van Freestyle (Can’t Have Everything Freestyle)” - The LOX

(This was one of the darker sounding cuts off of More Life, so it’s not surprise that the Lox sound perfect on this instrumental. Normally I would never consider placing a mixtape-caliber “freestyle” on my year-end list, but this one was so classic Lox, so evocative of the classic mixtape era, that I played it out as if it was a street music anthem circa ‘02.)

71. “Stir Fry” - Migos

(One of the more recent entries on this list, the combination of the Migos infectious flow-work with some stirring Pharrell production as the Atlanta trio closing out the year on a high note. I am often skeptical of the Migos when it comes to material that stands the test of time, but they seem to be aging like a fine wine, so count me amongst the many that are eager to hear the rest of Culture 2.)

(Armand Hammer’s ROME album almost completely passed me by...but I am really glad I wasn’t caught sleeping for too long! With Quell Chris joining the menace on this one, it makes for quite the attention grabber.)

(I am not 100% sure how Joseph Chilliams came on the scene, whether he is being serious or if he’s just a goofy kid or what, but I will tell you this: he is the most interesting MC to come out of Chicago since Chance The Rapper. You will be hearing a lot from him, I promise you.)

(With Humble Beast, the young spitter from Chicago wanted his major label debut to be his own version of Reasonable Doubt. While that is probably not a realistic expectation, the album does successfully put all of his gifts on display. Herbo is not a cookie cutter product from the drill era, he is a young MC with real perspective, capable of being a mouthpiece for his community and a representation of the Windy City’s surplus of diverse talent. “Bipolar” is my favorite track from Herbo’s album right now because of how skillfully he switches up his delivery, while sounding brutally honest and hungry throughout.)

(21 Savage, Offset and Metro Boomin didn’t reinvent the wheel their Without Warning project, but in my opinion it’s one of the finest mixtapes of 2017. It starts with Metro Boomin, who alongside Mike Will Made-It, compose the most attractive trap records in the game today - catchy, without falling into the cookie-cutter trap that many other producers fall into. What Without Warning lacks in variety, it makes up for in steady execution.)

63. “Our Streets” - DJ Premier feat. A$AP Ferg

(On the surface the combo might not seem a natural fit, but the end result was a successful union. Ferg represents both the old and new school so well on this one, spitting bars with substance without checking his madcap charisma at the bar. Not one of my favorite Primo beats ever, but certainly dope enough to please fans of both classic boom-bap and the new school turn-up crowd.)

(A slow head nodder that puts some religiously themed samples to great use - thanks again for the whole crazy Good Book 2 project this year, Alchemist & Budgie - and the final result is another example of the stellar chemistry between truly special producers and two special rap talents.)

(If it’s possible to have a slept-on record on a critically acclaimed album, this would be the one. A brilliantly produced record, the soft and successful hook from James Blake meets with a slowly recovering Shawn Carter to make for a cautiously optimistic song. People make mistakes, so all marriages come with moments of joy as well as challenges. “MaNyfaCedGod” feels like a celebration of a life together, and taking things one day at a time...I can’t think of a more perfect message to close out 4:44.)

That being said, A$AP Mob cuts all tend to grow on me, and since it originally dropped I can say that this one did induce a fair share of head-nods.)

(A true champion of the next generation of NYC rap, Wiki not only carries the torch he adds his own unique voice to it. No Mountains In Manhattan is a great, great album, capturing the world of a young MC and layering it over a sound that feels like the most progressive underground hip-hop to come out of the city since El-P blew up.)

(Welcome back, King. Big K.R.I.T. took on the challenge that few MC’s have succeeded at, and that was dropping a really good double-album. Dripping with Southern-fried soul and ready to spill his guts on each and every song, K.R.I.T. packs so much heart into this album that it may be a long time before we can all fully digest it. That being said, I didn’t have to sit through “The Light” for too long before I declared it one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have heard on a rap album in recent years. Combining the meandering brilliance of jazz with the depth of live instrumentation and the Mississippi rapper’s deliberate voice, this is easily one of my favorite songs off of 4eva Is A Mighty Long Time.)

(CyHi’s G.O.O.D. Music album debut seemed doomed to remain shuttered away in the label’s vaults forever, but luckily for us, it turned out to be be one of the best surprises of 2017. Arriving long after all the hype around the Georgia MC faded, No Dope On Sundays was an album with depth, spirituality, and a plethora of bars. CyHi floats all over on this song, one of the many dope displays of positivity on the project.)

(Few rappers had a bigger year than 21 Savage. He seemed to be everywhere in 2017 as one of the poster children for a new generation of hardcore hip-hop. A controversial figure, no doubt, but it’s hard to deny that 21′s chilly persona and confident flow make for anything less than a strong presence on any track. And songs like “Nothin New” confirm once and for all that 21 Savage has a perspective in this world, so don’t lump him in with any shallow “mumble rapper”.)

(The talented Maryland MC - formally known as Jay IDK - showcased a ton of skills on IWASVERYBAD. While his storytelling skills may be his most potent weapon of choice, this track might pack the most attitude on the album, and his flow is on-point. Factor in the hard beat and catchy hook, and it became an easy standout for me.)

(With a title like Hitler On Steroids, the music had better be good. When Daringer, WESTSIDEGUNN and Benny get together on a joint you know what you’re getting: a dope beat from D, flair from WSG, and rewind-worthy bars from Benny. The “Greatest” isn’t an album single or anything you will likely hear on national radio, it is just fantastic hip-hop, and a shining example of why Shady Records invested in the pool of talent up in Buffalo right now.)

However…this Back To Basics tape was really good! Each track felt like a single, and not only does Quan sound hungry, but he pours he seemed to pour his heart into this tape. Is it me, or does he even sound Weezy-esque on this one? Me waving the flag for Rich Homie Quan is a testament to the weirdness and unpredictability of 2017.)

When the story was leaked that Westside Gunn and DOOM would be joining forces, I think we all hoped for a full project...but realistically, we knew that any DOOM project comes with questions. We should be happy that we got two tracks from these two dope super-villains, each capturing the gifts that each MC brings to underground hip-hop.)

(This whole album is dope. Let it be known that Tuamie is a force to be reckoned with behind the boards, as he conjures up ways to put fresh spins on old boom-bap that bring to mind some of the vibes that DJ Spinna and Jay Dilla were able to infuse into their work. And the MC’s sound potent throughout - picture D.I.T.C. with some dashes of Gang Starr, Lootpack and even C-N-N, and you have a handle on why Panama Plus is easy to rock from start to finish. Keep your eyes glued on the Virginia underground rap scene for the foreseeable future, you won’t be disappointed.)

(Kevin Abstract might have earned the award for biggest impression-making verse of 2017 on “JUNKY”. I like to think of Brockhampton as what Odd Future could have been with maturity and focus, but the “rap boy band” still manages to color outside thee lines on all of their albums this year. The prolific team have more than a few attention-grabbing songs and videos to their credit, but Abstract ups the ante with possibly the hardest pro-LGBT verse in hip-hop history, and delivers one of the greatest verses of the year in the process.)

(Kendrick finds a pocket in this one that I don’t believe any other rapper could touch. Here he’s filled with a spirit that’s capable of selling a feeling like “this is what God feels like!” The soaring stadium anthem is almost over the top heavenly without being corny. It’s just a cool song that captures the feeling of being on top of the world. And I dig it.)

(Just Blaze straight up unleashed the Krakken with this one! While we are still waiting to hear the rumored “Just Blaze & The Blazettes” project that pairs the Griselda boys with the super-producer, this was quite the teaser. The Buffalo brothers go back and forth on this one with a hunger that could get a standing ovations from Styles & Jadakiss.)

(Vince cranked the experimental dance music up to the max on his new album, and I’m still surprised that this Ty Dolla $ign crooner is my favorite song off the album right now. The tastefully subdued drums serve Vince’s pen game well, and while Big Fish Theory was worshipped by some and maligned by others, this is just factually a good rap song.)

(Damn, this is soooo hard. This is one of the songs I would play if someone asked me, “what’s so good about Roc Marciano?” No one reaches this level of gritty, teeth snarling rap music like Roc, as he rattles off potent quotables over a sick Arch Druids production.)

(Twelvyy shall sit on the shelf no longer. The A$AP Mobber was next in line to step up, and he did just that with his 12 album. It’s a sobering NYC-banger from start to finish, a testament to A$AP Yams’ vision, and one of the group’s strongest projects in recent years. Both Twelvyy & Rocky both put in fine work on this one, a standout joint reminiscent of the early vibes we first got from the A$AP team.)

(Yeah, yeah I know - Jay-Z is not the first rapper to get personal on a record, and he’s not the first middle-aged man to deliver “grown man rap”...but this is JAY-Z here!? One of the most famous men in the world spills his guts about one of the most privately devastating times of his life and his family, how he screwed up, and you’re going to be casual about this? That’s fine for you, but I’m just going to appreciate the man’s ability to use his gift of rhyme to capture the frame of mind of a 40 year old celebrity about to lose it all, and firmly place it in my top 25 of 2017, thank you.)

What a huge year for Mach, and for many this joint was their first official taste of what this fresh voice is capable of.)

(Wow. No I.D.’s work could easily pass for classic Kanye production with this one. Here he takes a dope gospel sample, allows an under-the-radar nobody named Beyonce f’n Knowles-Carter to lay some vocals over it, and then he served it to a young Soundcloud struggle rapper named Shawn “Locked Down As The Greatest Rapper Of All Time” Carter. The results? HOV gets personal again, drops some jewels, and we have yet another classic Jay-Z record to add to the catalogue.)

(I refused to allow Quelle’s album to be slept on. A brilliantly produced, wonderfully scripted album, and an all around enjoyable listen, Quelle’s Being You Is Great, I Wish I Could Be You More Often is a lesson in how to walk the line between classic late 90′s underground hip-hop and experimental hip-hop. I have a lot of faves off this project, but this one is beautiful enough to stand ahead of the pack.)

(For every four or five generic Migos records there is one straight up anthem that reminds you that whatever quality these guys have, it leads to contagious music. How do you follow-up a hugely successful record like “Bad and Boujee”? By showing the same patience, allowing a slow tease of an instrumental build into a fresh sounding hook, then layering it with enough Migosian ad libs to keep fans rewinding again and again.)

16. “Riverdale Rd” - 2 Chainz

(I was surprised this one didn’t blow up more. Maybe it’s a slow burner? To me, this record was 2 Chainz’ answer to “A Mili”. At first the seemingly basic beat doesn’t stand out, but it is still very distinct and built for a charismatic MC to tap dance all over. On first listen? It’s okay. But on second and third listen, if you’re not bouncing and chanting “Riverdale, Riverdale, Riverdale”, then you should enjoy life more.)

15. “HUMBLE” - Kendrick Lamar

(Leaving a dent in the center of both hip-hop and pop music circles, Kendrick must be finding it a challenge to stay humble these days. No amount of overexposure could dull this record, or keep it from becoming one of the biggest smashes of 2017. A traditional west coast banger that arrived as a curve ball to anyone that expected his latest opus to follow in the same sonic footsteps of To Pimp A Butterfly, “HUMBLE” proved to be the perfect record that Kendrick needed to spark the hype for DAMN. The only thing that makes Kendrick Lamar a “weirdo rapper” is how weird it is that Kendrick can nail the vibe of a classic gangsta rap record better than most gangsta rappers.)

(UGH, another reinterpretation of Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam”...in 2017!? I’m the first to admit disappoint when I noticed that the short track list on 4:44 would include yet another use of this sample - and with little alterations involved. However, Jay-Z and Damian Marley breathe life into this classic sample in such a way that it feels more like an awakening of a spirit rather than a rehash of an abused music sample. The closest thing to a smooth gangster record on 4:44, now when I hear “Bam” pound through speakers in 2017 it feels more like a lesson in proud resilience than the same old same old.)

11. “Calisthenics” - Nolan The Ninja feat. Royce Da 5′9

(The boom-bap force is strong with these two. An early favorite off of Nolan’s terrific YEN album, this record is a testament to a great hip-hop tradition that is being embraced in Detroit right now. Both MC’s flash their rhyme skills over a dusty sample that harkens back to the heyday of The Wake Up Show. If you’re not feeling this, then chances are you wouldn’t have read down this far on my list.)

10. “Luger” - Benny ft. Westside Gunn & Conway

(The Griselda gang had a blast with this one. A slept-on loosie with a beat that feels like it could have come from the mind of fellow Buffalonjan Rick James, “Luger” doesn’t break any new ground. In fact - and true to many wrestling homages penned by the Shady Records signees - “Luger” doesn’t even address retired wrestler Lex Luger, another son of the city of Buffalo, of which the song is named. What makes this Daringer production stand out amidst a sea of dope Griselda cuts in 2017, is how skillfully the these MC’s flash their skills as verse writers, flow crafters, and torch bearers of a classic New York hip-hop sound. Griselda did HUGE things this year, and their stock is still rising.)

9. “Plain Jane” - A$AP Ferg

(It has been a strong year for A$AP Ferg, hasn’t it. The whole Mob made moves this year but for Ferg, 2017 feels like a return to rising rap star form. 2016 yielded his ambitious Always Strive and Prosper album, a project flooded with many great ideas that ultimately drowned in mostly unsuccessful production choices. The Three 6 Mafia influenced “Plain Jane” strikes the right tone as a club record attempt by the A$AP Mob’s most unpredictable lieutenant.)

8. “Tell Em” - Tate Kobang

(Tell me how this didn’t blow up again? Rising Baltimore rapper Tate Kobang has a knack for catchy hooks, but this one is an easy standout in my mind. Having all the makings of a radio/stream smash without actually being a smash, “Tell Em” is as much an accessible, trap-inspired city anthem as any released in 2017, and just because every other blog seems to have neglected it, I refuse to follow suit. This joint bumps.)

7. “Gunsense” - Roc Marciano

(Yet another standout off of Rosebudd’s Revenge. The Super Cat intro is practically legendary by now, while the original source material for this Arch Druids banger remains mysterious. What “Gunsense” represents is the work of a gifted MC that knows how to blend the elements of soul, funk, reggae, and hip-hop into an aesthetic that you either feel or you don’t. To those that can’t feel it, I’m sorry to say that you’re missing out on one of the finest nuanced wordsmith’s in rap history.)

A place he clearly loves to this day, warts and all, Brooklyn has been as much of Jigga’s sound as any other influence in his life. Add “Marcy Me” to his already lengthy list of classic homages to his home town.)

(As a fan of rap music, sometimes what the mood calls for is just straight up raw grit. Whenever Roc & Ka combine powers, they concoct the best minimalistic rap music around, so “Marksmen” is less the exception than the rule. To me it feels like “King Kunta” dialed up to 11, as if “hey I’m black and I’m proud” escalated to “hey, did you not hear me!? I’m black and I’m proud and I demand equality” after the message of peace was not met with actions it deserved. Be it his gift with the pen or his gift with the delivery of his message, whatever is within Kendrick’s DNA, it crafted the greatest talent in hip-hop today.

The Alchemist and Bekon bless Kendrick with the soothing backdrop he needed to break down the fears that Kendrick dealt with as a child, as a young man, and as the music superstar he is today. How do you know if something is alive? Describe some of the characteristics of living things.

In the Cell Types Gizmo™, you will use a light microscope to compare and contrast different samples. On the LANDSCAPE tab, click on the Elodea leaf. (Turn on Show all samples if you can’t find it.) Week 2: June 12-13 & 18- Ants and Pollinators

On Monday, June 12th, we worked at Mt. Auburn Cemetary collecting ants. We used two methods to do this- 1) We laid out bait for them in two test tubes, one with a cookie (roughly 1 cm) and the other with spam. We set up a site where we measured out 20 test tubes, placing one of each at each 16 1/4 feet (5 meters). At each interval, we labeled a flag and took measurements of our altitude, and coordinates. 

We took note of the percentage of ground cover at each site ( % of grass vs. gravestone or the ground) we also recorded the number of species of plants there were in each of quadrant (everything inside of the hula-hoop with the # flag standing in the middle. Lastly, we measured the length of the grass at all four sides of the quadrant. 

This information will tell us where the various species of ants that thrive and choose to make their homes there, as well as what species of plants they are drawn to or whether they prefer cement/ground. 

We collected the tubes from the flag sites. We then did additional collecting (hand-collecting) which was not on a rigid terrain. Instead, we set the timer for 20 minutes and picked which colonies we collected ants from as we walked through our transect (given area). I used an ant aspirator to suck up one ant from each site mound or site we decided upon.  

On Tuesday, June 13th, we reexamined the ants that we had collected the previous day. They were frozen overnight and no longer alive. At the lab at Lesley, we picked the ants off of the frozen spam and cookie in order to look at them under the microscope to identify how many morphospecies were in each tube.  

In my tubes, some had as many as 48 ants and as little as 0. I did not work with any tubes that contained more than one species. 

As we looked at the ants under the microscope we were able to begin the identification process by using an identification sheet and soft tweezers to examine the various parts of the body. 

We narrowed the species down by 

-Petiole: Does it have 1 or 2 segments?

- Acidopore: Present/ absent?

-Number of antennal segments

-Number of teeth (This was extremely hard to see unless the mouth was already open)

- We looked at the profile shape, the mandible shape, and the length of the antenna. 

Comparing what we were able to see from the specimens to the identification pictures, we were able to make an educated guess about the species of ants we had collected from the two transects we worked at in Mt. Auburn Cemetary. Finishing up, we placed the ants in alcohol until further identification can be done.  

There are 32 ant genera present in New England and I am interested in finish putting our numbers together this wee, to learn how many we were able to collect on this particular day. This collecting, however, will go on for many more months with much more in-depth identification. 

Switching to pollinators! 

On Sunday, June 18, I worked with Amy at Mt. Auburn Cemetary to collect data on pollinators- plant and bee identification. 

We used the same hula hoop to act as a measurement for our quadrant, placing it over a chosen area of ground with flowers present. I did this 4 times- twice near the tower (a highly elevated area of Mt. Auburn Cemetary) and twice down by the pond (a lower and more aquatic terrain.) 

I studied the details of the flowers in the quadrant and using the field guide on plant identification, was able to narrow most of the plants down to what I believed they were. 

I went down the list looking at:

- Leaf arrangement: Entire, Basal, alternate, opposite, Whorled

-Leaf margins- Bumpy, various levels of teeth

-Flower: Regular (symmetrical) or Irregular (asymmetrical) or indistinguishable 

-How many parts regular?

- Hair, the color of flowers etc.

The two flowers that I was able to Identify were: 

Quadrant 1- A White Beardtongue (White of purple-tinged ) Wildflower, like all in MAC 

Quadrant 2- A Hairy Arnica with basal 

Quadrant 3- What I believe to be some form of Iris: A Dwarf Iris (Blue) or a Crested Iris (Blue) 

Quadrant 4- Insufficient data  

Once the identification was done, a timer was set for 10 minutes and I used a large net to collect any bees that landed on the flowers in the quadrants. 

We then studied the details of the bees and were able to identify the type of bees they were. The most interesting part of this was to see the pollen sacs on the bee’s body, as I had never been able to study this part of the bee close up. The pollinator sacs on the bee that was most evident were on the sides of both of her legs.

Bees I was able to Identify: 

Quadrant 1- 1 Bee: Small honey bee

Quadrant 2- 1 Bee: Lasioglossum (Sweat bee) Named because they are drawn to sweat and will lick it off the skin

Quadrant 3: 1 Bee: Very, very, small. I was unable to catch it with the net. I believe it was a: Perdita (yellow) or Dufourea (although it seemed to be yellow, not black)

Ideally, the idea of studying the pollinators is to see what types of pollinator plants the bees are drawn to at Mt. Auburn Cemetary and how many species of bees that reside there. Potentially, with this research Mt. Auburn, and other urban environments, could use this information as they think about landscaping and which plants would be beneficial to the health and growth of the bee population.

Lastly: An Introduction to the Boston University Lab:

On Sunday night I learned how to read a white blood cell stain hemocytometer with help from Chris and Evan at the labs at B.U. 

We were looking at samples of the blood drawn from the bat colonies in Sherborn, Massachusetts last week. We looked at these samples using a white blood cell stain hemocytometer X100 and X400.

I watched how to draw up the blood and inject it into the slide- then we looked in the microscope and counted the number of white blood cells that were apparent in the blood streak. We labeled the numbers on the corresponding quadrants on the data sheet.

The blood was mixed with a purple solution to shrink the red blood cells so that only the white cells were visible. It is extremely important to be careful with this blood, as rabies can be fatal to humans. 

The intent of studying the WBC is to look at the immune system in these bats. A heightened white count is most of the time correlating to the body fighting an infection or disease. There are other signs in bats too, however, including the level of inflammation as well as the protein they create called a “complement” protein (used to fight off WNS), which is seen in the plasma. 

Working in the lab was one of my favorite sections we have worked on so far. It is so incredible to see these microscopic cells that are produced by the bats and what these numbers mean to the larger story of what is happening with their immune system influenced by White-nose Syndrome and an urban vs. rural environment. Will these variables make their immune system more depleted or will there not be any major change between the urban and rural habitats to their ability to fight off disease and reproduce?

Diabetes Tips That Everyone Should Check Out

It can be scary when you are first diagnosed with diabetes, though with the right knowledge, you can manage the disease successfully, and start living a much healthier life. While it's easy to see in unprocessed foods where the sugar or other ingredients are, it's not so simple with processed or packaged food. Read the labels and avoid items that have been known to interact with your sugar. If you have diabetes or are at risk for developing it, it is important that you lose weight. Being overweight or obese can cause blood glucose levels to be dangerously high, which can cause severe complications, including coma or death. Try to eat healthier and stick to a moderate exercise plan. It's never to late to change, and you can be successful no matter how many previous failed attempts you've had. Ask your Physician if they have any supply samples of your Diabetes medication or syringes. It is unlikely they will have monitors to give you, or test strips or lancets for that matter, but you can get those from your pharmacist instead. They often have monitors for free, so make sure to ask! If you can't afford to get a gym membership, try your local community center or YMCA. You can find great discounts and sometimes even barter with them for a membership. For example, offer to help clean the gym or work on the grounds. That's great exercise for a diabetic, too. It is important for diabetics to take their insulin or other medications at the same time each day. Your doctor gave you this medication to control your diabetes and its symptoms and forgetting to take your medications or taking them at different times can raise your insulin or blood sugar. Eating out at restaurants or getting take out is not only bad for a Diabetic's health, but also their checkbook. Save money and your blood glucose level by eating at home instead. You can find many copycat recipes online for all your favorite foods, and even healthier versions which are better for you. If you find that your A1C levels are disproportionately higher than your typical blood glucose levels, the problem may be that you are measuring your pre-meal levels, which does not give you an accurate reading. Your average levels may not accurately reflect readings that are taken before, during, and after eating your meals. Be careful to not rely on diabetes candy bars and shakes too often. Although they are good for people on the go, they do not replace eating a meal. If you end up eating the candy bars or drinking the shakes too much, you could actually cause your blood glucose level to go too high.

If you're having trouble keeping yourself to a healthy Diabetic diet, don't change things up. Have a chicken night, a fish night, a lentil burger night, etc. so that you know what's supposed to happen on Thursday and can prepare for it. If you have something different every night you'll still have variation, but having a schedule will make you feel much less stress and you won't cave into temptation. Try drinking green tea if you suffer from diabetes. It is a great way to give into your sweet tooth without drinking a beverage that could affect your blood sugar. Also, although nothing has been proven, doctors are looking into the suggestion that green tea may actually lower blood sugar. Diabetes is known to be a cause of nerve damage in extremities particularly in the feet. Besides taking your Diabetic medications, you should therefore take extra care of your feet. Wash your feet on a daily basis and make sure to keep them dry. In addition, avoid walking barefoot and wear sneakers or slippers. At the very least, keep your socks on. Control when and how much you eat. Try to eat meals and snacks at the same time every day. Eating at the same time will keep your blood sugar regulated and make it easier to maintain. How much you eat is important because even if you eat healthy, but overeat, you can gain weight. A big myth with regards to diabetes is that people with diabetes must completely change their diets and switch over to special diabetic foods. However, this is simply not the case. With anything, you can eat anything as long as it is in moderation and if you are exercising and taking your insulin according to how your physician prescribed. Put your snacks on a plate. If you eat your snacks out of a bag, you are more likely to eat more of them. Instead, put them on a plate and put the bag away. This way you can see how much you are eating and you will be less likely to grab the bag for more. Diabetes is only problematic if you choose not to adapt your lifestyle to your condition. And yet, times of crisis are precisely when companies should step up and live up to their purpose statements — offering real commitment to social and environmental causes. This urgency holds especially for influential companies who are rich in resources.

Society is facing at least six challenges related to COVID-19. Our families and communities need to Keep Calm, Keep Working, Keep Going, Stay Solvent, Stay Supplied, and Stay Safe. Companies can help address each of these challenges (Figure 1).

  Help people keep calm under lockdown

Can companies help keep stress levels low? Could they provide entertainment to people? Fact check the stories spreading on social media? Or, bring people together through interactive sessions aimed at exercising, blowing off steam, or just breathing deeper?

So far, the “keep calm” strategy has been left to individuals who set up Facebook help groups, art institutions offering virtual museum tours, or stunt offers like free premium Pornhub. But Amazon could stream entertainment from artists who lack stages to perform on and have lost all their income. Mental health apps could provide balance to off-kilter parents and kids during home schooling. Social media companies could also help people to find existing help groups or help these groups organize more effectively.

As misinformation about the virus proliferates, corporate voices can provide needed corrections. For example, Mucinex has a campaign to “Spread Facts. Not Fear.”

  Help people keep working

By now, many people are using tools to connect virtually that they had not downloaded only a week or two ago. IT support. Companies can increase the number of help lines and waive fees. Software companies can expand their assistance to competitors’ product offerings. 

Home schooling. As of April 2, UNESCO reports that school closures affect nearly 90 per cent of students worldwide. Many teachers had to invent digital activities literally overnight. Companies like Zoom have provided free platforms for K-12 education, but there are more opportunities. Companies could provide teacher- and kid-friendly guides to connection online, or apps that help parents know what their kids are doing. They could offer instant ‘teacher training’ to parents who are struggling to recall trigonometry. And, they can increase safeguards as many young children are suddenly online and more vulnerable to predators.

Data and bandwidth. Not everyone can afford the data demanded by this new way of operating, and companies can facilitate access. Loyalty points could be traded for data. Companies could sanitize public transport and offer basic Personal Protective Equipment to workers for their commute.

  Help people stay solvent

The next mass wave coming in will be financial ruin, as economies nosedive, unemployment skyrockets, and savings run out. The implications of a 20 - 25 per cent decline in economic output are dire. Can companies help people stay financially afloat while they weather the storm?

Business could give people a temporary break in their cash crunch. Companies can provide refunds on lost holidays, waive fees, offer payment holidays, and extend credit access. Small and medium enterprises, in particular, will suffer. Unilever is making speed payments to SME suppliers and providing credit to small-scale retailers.

We hear about price gouging, but there’s a great opportunity for companies to make the basics as cheap as possible, e.g. with their own label brands. This action can help lower the cost of living in the tough times ahead.

Connect differently with customers. Large sales forces suddenly find themselves with company cars and nowhere to go. Could they become the new delivery drivers? Could Pharma reps switch from taking samples to doctors into taking prescriptions to patients? Could insurance employees get shopping lists from customers and drop off groceries?

  Help people stay safe Can companies provide the essentials to stop or slow the spread of COVID-19? Companies can ask: How much of our production can be switched to make essential items like soaps, masks and ventilators needed to stop the spread of the virus? Should we abandon our key business lines temporarily?

This is the most obvious, immediate way that some companies can help, so it’s heartening to see those who can manufacture at scale stepping into the fray. Tesla is providing masks and plans to manufacture ventilators. Ford is also onboard. LVMH is making hand sanitizers. Zara has committed to sewing masks and scrubs as protective gear for hospital workers. Crocs is donating easy-to-clean shoes to medical staff.

  Provide Material Aid, not Memes

The world needs help to navigate this crisis. So far, too many companies are responding with clever brand or logo treatments.

Businesses are creative, powerful forces in our society. By addressing their skills to our shared challenge, they can close the gap between symbolic and substantive action and live up to their full purpose.
