For my 3rd idea for an interactive piece, I looked at the large 3D frames that a lot of festivals include at their events. This frames the festival environment behind it and allows people to take photos, encouraging promotion of the festival on their social media.

ARTIST RESEARCH: Andy Warhol

In a new exhibition featuring Andy Warhol, the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota Bay, Florida, Warhol designed a frame piece which gives visitors a new look at Warhol’s enduring fascination with nature through a display of paintings, archival photography, and a unique collection of plants. His famous quote ‘Land really is the best art’ inspires this piece as the installation literally frames the environment behind it like a work of art.

I tried out my own designs for frames to have at the festival. I added imagery to it such as plants and leaves with facts on the first one to educate people on the positive side to the environment and how to make an impact to help it, and on the other, plastics and litter, showing what would happen and what does happen when we do not care for the environment.

I liked the idea behind this piece however after getting feedback from peers, I realised that people at a festival trying to have fun and possibly being drunk would not care or take the time to read facts from the installation and it might even get damaged.

A few days before this event, I received a phone call from a friend who told me that his place of work, the Sarasota Film Festival, was looking for a few photographers to photograph their red carpet and press release event in preparation for the upcoming film festival. He told me I was the first person he thought of. I arrived at the event two hours early and introduced myself to the staff at the event. The friend that gave me the volunteer opportunity, Mikey, introduced me to other staff at the event as well and handed out some of my business cards for me to increase my networking opportunities

As more people started arriving to the event, I began networking with the other photographers and exchanging social media profiles. I also saw a photographer I had been an intern for a few months prior and he told me that he had a photography gig for me if I was still in the area when January came around, which felt really exciting. Especially because I looked up to him when I was interning and strived to one day be in his position. To have him recognize me as someone he would want to work with felt like a huge accomplishment.

As the night went on, I continued photographing the rest of the event until I was stopped by Mikey’s boss. He told me that he recognized how hard I was working and felt I stood out among the other photographers. He wanted me to have full access to the festival and photograph the rest of their promotional events. Unfortunately, though, due to COVID-19 I learned shortly after the event that the festival would be cancelled.
