Page Turner: June
I hope you have had a great pride month! I did, although I didn’t have as much time as I would have liked to read. So this month, I ended up reading mostly manga and graphic novels. Just a friendly reminder, just because pride month is over doesn’t mean you should stop reading queer books. That should be a year-long thing. I have more queer books on my TBR that I picked up this month thanks to…

Eve #4
Tumblr media
Eve #4 BOOM! Studios 2021 Written by Victor LaValle Illustrated by Jo Mi-Gyeong Coloured by Brittany Peer Lettered by Andworld Design    Even humanity's last hope needs a little help sometimes.     The Vault is in sight and Eve's come farther than any before her, but the last leg of her journey will test her to her core. Thankfully, she isn't alone... with her newly discovered sister by her side. Wexler has dodged the bullet, literally, and is in hot pursuit of the pair. Will he catch up to them and dash humanity's last chance?    Younger Eve can’t grasp her mind around the concept of a clone it would seem.  Personally that’s a twist I hadn’t seen coming.  I think that the quarantine must have warped some minds even further so that we are starting to see plot twists and turns occur that seem to come out of left field and take us by surprise.  I’m never going to complain about this but it seems everyone has raised the standard by which they make comics these days.  Victor has repeatedly shown throughout this story thus far he isn’t afraid to do anything and personally I’d like to see Wexler destroyed for what he did last issue but that’s me.      I’m a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter only serves to continually flesh them out beautifully.  The painting we see is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story we are taken by surprise by most of what we see.    How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen is fantastic to see.  How the avenues continue to open up to be explored and alongside those already being explored is where all the good bits of the storytelling lay and what this does is add some great depth, dimension and complexity to the story.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved impeccably well.    I love the interiors here.  The linework is clean, crisp and strong and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this great attention to detail we see throughout the book makes me a happy camper.  That we see backgrounds as much as we do and how they enhance and expand the moments while also working within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the book is utterly marvellous.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The colour work is exceptionally well rendered.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work are beautifully rendered.     There is a lot going on here and that Victor manages to shake things up as often as he does and doesn’t let the reader up for a moment to catch their breath before the next wave of twists & turns hit is what makes a thrill ride so much fun to take.  It might have taken this blonde some time but I’m beginning to understand Eve and how things have been for her and how eleven is the magic number.  With some exceptional writing and characterisation plus these fabulous interiors the end of mankind never felt this exciting before.
