Terror in the Wax Museum

That Georg Fenady’s TERROR IN THE WAX MUSEUM (1973, Tubi, Prime, YouTube) looks like a TV movie, and a not very good one at that, shouldn’t be surprising. It’s one of only two theatrical features Fenady directed in a career mostly dedicated to television and was made for a low, even then, budget of $500,000. John Carradine, the proprietor of a chamber of horrors, is considering selling his collection when somebody murders him. With no will in sight, the estate is claimed by niece Nicole Shelby’s guardian (Elsa Lanchester), but someone or something is trying to drive them out. That sounds like the plot of a ‘40s B movie, and with its array of one-time stars (Ray Milland, Broderick Crawford, Maurice Evans, Louis Hayward, Patric Knowles) it looks like one, only not as well made. There are two decent shots in the whole film, and the revelation of the killer is so botched, you can only figure out whodunnit by process of elimination. Hayward comes closest to delivering a performance as a rather likable saloon owner, and Lanchester is very funny. What she can do with a word like “gargle” is a lesson in how to make bad dialog sound almost clever. Her line readings were the only thing that got me through this sorry mess. Milland has an embarrassingly bad drunk scene, especially considering that he won his Oscar for playing a drunk, but at least he has fun in a scene in which he conducts a tour through the museum. He can’t hold a candle for rottenness to Shelby, whose British accent keeps dropping whenever she encounters the word “sure.” There’s a sympathetic deaf-mute hunchback (Steven Marlo) treated with a surprising level of decency (despite his being stuck in a bad Halloween mask). Whenever people turn away while talking to him, they correct themselves and repeat the line to his face so he can read their lips. But then there’s a beautiful Chinese woman (Lucy Lu, who’s still acting in her 90s) repeatedly referred to as a “dragon lady.” Also in the cast is Shani Wallis, whose career obviously didn’t get much of a boost out of starring in OLIVER! (1968), as the finest music hall singer to walk the streets.

Born to a turbulent family on a Mississippi farm, James Earl Jones passed away today. He was ninety-three years old. Abandoned by his parents as a child and raised by a racist grandmother (although he later reconciled with his actor father and performed alongside him as an adult), the trauma of his childhood developed into a stutter that followed him through his primary school years – sometimes, his stutter was so debilitating, he could not speak at all. In high school, Jones found in an English teacher someone who found in him a talent for written expression, and encouraged him to write and recite poetry in class. He overcame his stutter by graduation, although the effects of it carried over for the remainder of his life.

Jones' most accomplished roles may have been on the Broadway stage, where he won three Tonys (twice winning Best Actor in a Play for originating the lead roles in 1969's The Great White Hope by Howard Sackler and 1987's Fences by August Wilson) and was considered one of the best Shakespearean actors of his time.

But his contributions to cinema left an impact on audiences, too. Jones received an Honorary Academy Award alongside makeup artist Dick Smith (1972's The Godfather, 1984's Amadeus) in 2011. From the end of Hollywood's Golden Age to the dawn of the summer Hollywood blockbuster in the 1970s to the present, Jones' presence – and his basso profundo voice – could scarcely be ignored. Though he could not sing like Paul Robeson nor had the looks of Sidney Poitier, his presence and command put him in league of both of his acting predecessors.

Experiment in Terror

Maybe this dates me, but there’s something refreshing about watching a thriller with no forced romance, no jump scares, no attempts to launch a sequel and cutting that doesn’t try to give you motion sickness. Blake Edwards shot EXPERIMENT IN TERROR (1962, TCM, Tubi) in the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock and classic films noirs. Its clearest Hitchcock inspiration is PSYCHO (1960). Like that film, the production derived in part from the director’s work in television, with Edwards bringing cinematographer Phillip H. Lathrop, composer Henry Mancini and several supporting players from shows like PETER GUNN. And as with much TV of the time, he shot in glorious black and white. Both also feature cross-dressing killers, but unlike the Master of Suspense, Edwards makes no attempt to explain the pathology of his psychopath, nor is there any suggestion that the cross-dressing is anything more than expedience. The character played memorably by Ross Martin may queer the staid middle-class life of bank teller Lee Remick, but only in the sense that he disrupts her safe, sanitary existence.

In this adaptation by The Gordons of one of their John Ripley novels, “Operation Terror,” Martin accosts Remick in her garage and threatens her and sister Stefanie Powers to make Remick steal $100,000 from her bank. Despite his warnings, she calls the FBI, which is where Glenn Ford enters as Agent ‘Rip’ Ripley (Broderick Crawford had played the role in an earlier film). One of the joys of EXPERIMENT IN TERROR is watching the precision of Ford and his agents as they try to determine Martin’s identity and capture him while protecting Remick (who’s pretty good at protecting herself, as it turns out) and Powers. The procedural scenes are like a more serious take on the clockwork slapstick comedy of such later Edwards films as THE PARTY (1968) and the Pink Panther films. You may find it slower than most contemporary thrillers, but it’s tremendously entertaining, and the slowness pays off in the opening scene, where Edwards holds the initial shots of Martin threatening Remick for an almost unbearable length. You can feel her terror from the sheer endurance of it all.

The cast is uniformly solid, with Martin and Remick taking the showiest roles. There are also nice turns by Ned Glass as a stoolie and Anita Loo and Patricia Huston as two of Martin’s girlfriends. If you’re a Sondheim fan, you can try to spot Harvey Evans, Young Buddy in the original FOLLIES and a Broadway mainstay. A really dedicated soap fan will know which of Tom and Alice’s two children from DAYS OF OUR LIVES turn up in the film.b
