June 29th 1928, saw the birth of the actor, Ian Bannen
Born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire as a young man, he served in the army and attended Ratcliffe College, Leicestershire.
Ian first appeared on the London stage in Prisoners of War and later had great success in Eugene O´Neills The Iceman Cometh and Long day’s Journey into Night. Bannen was an original member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and also made numerous appearances on Broadway. He made several high profile roles on film in the 1960s, including: The Hill, The Flight of the Phoenix for which he was nominated for an academy award and “Penelope. Scores of other roles followed, both on film and television.
His most notable roles in the 1970s and 1980s were: The Offence, Identikit, Bite the Bullet, Jesus of Nazareth, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Eye of the Needle, Gandhi, Gorky Park, Defence of the Realm and Hope and Glory. In the 1990s, Bannen won acclaim for his role as the father of Robert Bruce in the Oscar Winning epic Braveheart. In 1998 he starred alongside David Kelly in the charming comedy Waking Ned Devine, which was a surprise hit all over the world.
Of course I have to mention him in the reboot of Doctor Finlay in the mid 90’s where he played semi-retired practice partner, Dr. Cameron alongside fellow Scots David Rintoul and Annette Crosbie.
Ian Bannen tragically died in a car accident near Loch Ness in 1999, he and his wife, Marilyn Salisbury, who had been driving, were discovered in an overturned vehicle at Knockies Straight between Inverness and Fort Augustus. His wife had only minor injuries. Ian was laid to rest in Kilchuimen Burial Ground Fort Augustus.

The Wild West
As in her other films, Mae West’s character in I’m No Angel was sexually independent and unapologetically so. (Kino Lorber) We first encountered Mae West back in 1926 when The New Yorker commented on her risqué Broadway play, Sex. Although the play was the biggest ticket in town, it eventually attracted a police raid that landed West in jail on morals charges. Sentenced to ten days for…

'Desire Under the Elms' by Eugene O'Neill – A Greek Tragedy on a New England Farm
‘Desire Under the Elms’ by Eugene O’Neill – A Greek Tragedy on a New England Farm
‘Desire Under the Elms’ by Eugene O’Neill    (1923) – 70 pages   The reason I read the plays of Eugene O’Neill is for their psychological intensity. In such plays as ‘The Iceman Cometh’, ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’, ‘Moon for the Misbegotten’ and others O’Neill delves more deeply into what it is to be human than other playwrights before or since. If you get a chance, read or watch one of…

I Once Walked On Broadway…or How I Made Love To A Theater Marquis…
This is from my other blog...My father knew how to direct me there. I asked him and he knew exactly how many blocks to walk. I have never known anyone who could pinpoint all of New York City by memory. Pop in Athens, GA…he’s learning another town… Watch out! https://www.pw.org/directory/writers/joan_noeldechen I remember being in a crowd at the stage door of The Old Vic’s production of “The 🌙…

Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville on starring in what might just be the greatest American play ever
Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville on starring in what might just be the greatest American play ever
Tumblr media
Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville star in ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’ at Wyndham’s Theatre
‘I’ve done a lot of plays,’ says Lesley Manville, with some understatement. ‘A lot of great plays: Caryl Churchill, Chekhov, Ibsen, Strindberg, Shakespeare. But I don’t think I’m overselling it by saying that this is the greatest play I’ve ever done.’
The work in question is Eugene…

TRAVELLING: WONDER WHEEL, “PERSONAJES MÁS GRANDES QUE LA VIDA”
“One may not give one’s soul to a devil of hate — and remain forever scatheless”.

What advice do you have for a beginner Actor? Sorry, I know it's off topic from SPN but you seem to be highly intelligent and I value your perspective so I would love to know.
1. Take acting classes at local theaters I can’t stress this enough, take as many as you can - acting, movement, voice, writing, improv, anything and everything that can help your acting.  If you don’t like that class, find a different one.   Acting classes are everywhere.  Find teachers you like, take other classes they offer.   Most students are not actors but civilians trying to gain confidence in public speaking or learn to improv to improve their required socializing at work events.
2. Read as much as you can - plays, books, script writing, genres.  Hit up your local libraries if you can’t afford to buy or download books.  Recommended books by Tennessee Williams, Shakespear, Arthur Miller, Eugene O Neill.  Find monologues you like and practice them until you can say them in yours sleep.  Here is Angela Bassett’s MacBeth monologue (X)
3. Find out when the season auditions are by asking your acting teachers, colleagues, and friends if they know of any upcoming projects.  That monologue you can say in your sleep, use it at many different theaters at their seasonal auditions.   If you want to go into screen acting, look up all the local agents (X), managers, casting directors, etc, and meet as many as you can.  Ask questions.  Learn what you can from them.  Eventually, you will get signed.  Then you’ll be auditioning.  Your agent will find you auditions but you should also find auditions on your own (I had a realtor but I found the house I wanted and then she arranged the paperwork).  Go out for as many parts as possible.  Even if you don’t get cast, you’re getting your name out there.
If you are still in high school I don’t recommend investing too much in headshots because you will be changing a lot in the next ten years.  Do NOT do any nudity for any role or modeling until after you are 25 years old.  You should have a parent or guardian with you at every audition and be on every conversation you have and at every rehearsal, fitting, photo shoot (there is absolutely NO reason for the photographer to strip down to his boxers while taking your pictures).   Most modeling schools are scams.
Branding: You’ll need to figure out how to stand out by being a brand.  Who does the actor present themselves as and who does the audience see them as or buy them as? As long as the two come together, you have a starting point for a brand.  Marilyn Monroe is an example.
Identity
Consistency
Uniqueness
Remember these three words if you plan to brand yourself on social media.  Next, do you brand yourself based on your target audience or is your brand based on your perception of who you are?   Are you a girl next door? Are you a farm girl trying to make it big?  Are you a bad girl with a heart of gold (showcase your pets or volunteer at an animal shelter or sanctuary)  Are you sassy but down to earth?  Are you an overbearing yet endearing crunchy granola?
What kind of voice do you want to build? (Funky, laid back, humorous, formal?)  What verbiage or vocabulary would you like to use? (Is this aimed at millennials, X-gens, baby boomers?)  What colors and types of design should you use to stand out? (Look into color psychology to create your branding)  Once you figure out what your identity is and established it, next you must spend time getting to know your audience to engage and serve them consistently better than your competitors.
Versatility can actually be the enemy of a successful acting career.   I’ve advised aspiring actors not to brand themselves as versatile because they are sabotaging their chances and setting themselves up for failure most of the time. We’ve joked that saying you’re versatile means you are good at everything but not great at anything.  Versatile actors tend to have a difficult time getting cast because they can do a lot of things that they don’t get pegged for any particular role, which your brand would help you land.  People assume all roles require someone with gravitas and acting chops, but that isn’t always the top priority with casting directors.  Some roles is a goofball (Jack Black), some roles require an impressive stage fighting skills (Darth Maul actor).  If you lack this crucial component then you won’t be considered for a lot of roles.  When young Jared started out his brand was “boy next door” to enable him to land gigs and led him to get that big break on Gilmore Girls.  Eventually Jared had to leave the “boy next door” brand once he physically matured into a grown man.  Jensen excels at the “bad boy with a heart of gold” trope and I think one of the reasons why Jensen hasn’t changed his acting is that trope can become “jerk with a heart of gold” i.e. Lost’s Sawyer and All in the Family’s Archie Bunker.
Lift weights, do yoga, take dance class, do whatever gets you into the kind of shape a director thinks people want to see in the often sexualized roles available.  You have to love acting and want it.  You have to be willing to put a lot of work into it, only to rejected because you’re too young, too old, or too tall, or too short, or too plain, or too hot, or too creepy or…  the list never ends.   Roll with it and move on.  If you can’t do that, you’re in trouble before you begin.
4. You don’t have to go to Los Angeles or New York, there might be a movie or TV show coming to your town to film.  Contact your city’s film commission to find out how to be an extra on set.  The best way to learn what it’s like to be on a set is to be on a set.   You will see first hand how much waiting goes on during a film shoot.   If the waiting bores you to death, then you might want to think twice about doing this for a living.   You will spend majority of your time auditioning and looking for work so you’ll need to have a flexible survival job that lets you take time off to audition and if you book work.  Yes most actors are waiters, but few of my fellow actor friends were writers and editors and even book agents.
5. Don’t join a union until you are getting a lot of union work. Because once you join a union it will become very different to get non-union work.
IMPORTANT: Beware of scammers.  NEVER pay someone to audition you for a role.  AVOID agent who expects monthly or yearly fees.  Agents should only get a cut from your paid-gigs as commission.  NEVER sign a contract without getting it checked with an entertainment lawyer (thank you cousin Michael).  DO NOT fall for advertisements saying shows like “The Boys/NCIS/Gotham Knights, etc are conducting auditioning classes for $1,000 and participants are guaranteed a role in the series”.  When auditioning for a role in an independent film, BEWARE of producers or directors expecting you to pay them to play a role.
6. You will get a script within 24 hours of the audition, so you don’t have a lot of time but you must memorize the script and prepare a fully developed character.   If you ever watched audition tapes on You Tube of people who booked parts, they look exactly like they do in the final film.   So again, you only 24 hours to prepare a camera-ready character.
Make bold choices and embrace your individual perspective that makes interesting, compelling, and completely different personalities.  That will make you a captivating performer.  The more confidently you use yourself as a canvas and let the context of the scene be spoken through your own emotional repertoire and point of view, the more compelling and interesting you are to watch. The most captivating actor is the one whose next movement, facial expression, or line reading is unpredictable. Nothing is more interesting than watching someone behave in such a way that you never know what they’ll do next.   That is the difference between Jeff Bridges (unpredictable) and Beu Bridges (reliable). 7. Actors not only have to be good at acting, but also good BUSINESS person, without exception.   Actors treat their careers the way a lawyer or doctor nurtures their practice.  They have a brand, a product (their ability to tell stories), customers (directors and producers) and they how to market themselves (get auditions), they know how to sell themselves (execute those auditions), and they know how to collect their money and hire salespeople (agents and managers) to bring them more business.
8. if you book a gig even as a day worker, take advantage of the craft service table and ignore the PAs snidely calling you “props that eat”.  Just a warning, stress eating among cast and crew is rampant and it’s easy to eat your weight in cookies.
