Viejos Pins (72)
Tumblr media
1946/56.

Activists Rally for Progressive Labor Reforms on Labor Day 2024
Groups of Activists crowded the streets of Manila to demand progressive actions for various service industries to commemorate Labor Day 2024 on May 1, 2024.
Participating groups such as the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP), Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON), Gabriela Women's Party (GABRIELA), Akbayan, Kabataan Partylist, to name a few organizations that gathered in the front of the University of Santo Tomas in Espanya, Manila.
The participants marched along Espanya to Morayta, in front of the Far Eastern University (FEU) for the opening program.
After the commencements, the protests continued to crowd the streets of Ermita to march to the U.S. Embassy on Roxas Boulevard. Participating jeepney drivers accommodated the protestors with free rides from Espanya to Kalaw Avenue.
During the march to the U.S. Embassy, a paper mache of President Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr. was paraded as the protestors demanded social reforms.
Multiple Police trucks and policemen confronted the rallyists. The protest came to a halt in front of the Museo ng Kabataan on Roxas Boulevard. During the continuation of the program, the protestors faced a police brigade. During this violent encounter, numerous rallyists were injured as the protestors pushed the police brigade and were pushed back by policemen while being cannoned by the fire trucks of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
No major injuries were recorded during the rally but six activists were illegally arrested. After spending six days in detention, the “Mayo Uno 6” were released on bail from the Manila Police District precinct.

Història d’Espanya (explicada pels espanyols) - Spanish History (Explained to Spaniards)
Tumblr media

Benvinguts i benvingudes a la classe magistral
Welcome to the master class
de la història d'Espanya oficial
that will debunk the fables and obscene stories
amb què els nacionalistes adoctrinen els nens.
with which nationalists indoctrinate children.
Thanks to two Nobel Prizes like Fabra and Bauzá
per combatre la mentida, finalment arribarà
to fight against the lie, will finally arrive
to all schools next year
the history of Spain that all children ought to know.
Tres mil anys d'història són
There are a thousand years of history
and therefore it’s the world’s oldest nation
i de fet a les pintures d'Altamira ja s'hi veu
and in fact it could be seen in the Altamira cave paintings
a tuna (a student music group), a tricorn and the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
Els romans i els visigots vingueren aquí
The Romans and the Visigoths came here
for the good turist treatment and not to conquer.
The Lady of Elx, who already spoke Valencian,
out of politness addressed them in Spanish.
Però allò que tant
But that which so much
confon i estranya,
confuses and surprises
amb la història tan gran
with such a great history
que té Espanya
Spain has
és que alguns vulguin fotre el camp.
is that some want to leave.
El rei Jaume, que era manyo i lapaoparlant,
King Jaume, who was Zaragozan and spoke Lapao (a dialect of Catalan spoken in Aragon),
expelled all the Moorish from Majorca and the East,
no pas com a reconquesta, sinó perquè van venir
not like a Reconquest, but because they came
a robar la feina a la gent d'aquí.
to steal jobs from people here.
Després vam descobrir el continent americà
Afterwards, we discovered the American continent
and those poor people were so impressed
que morien a milers a les mines d'or
that they died by the thousands in gold mines
to pay for catechesis and Spanish lessons.
I així vam ser l'imperi on
And in this way we were the empire
es deia que el sol mai no s'hi pon
where it was said the sun didn’t set
i si s'ha desfet és perquè no hem fet ús
and it has been undone because we haven’t made use
of force against who is not comfortable.
Quan Europa feia la revolució industrial
When Europe was doing the Industrial Revolution,
at the beginning we took it easy and later we couldn’t be bothered,
i vam evolucionar fins al moment precís
and we evolved until the precise moment
when Franco won the elections in 1936.
Va ser el mateix Franco el fundador
It was Franco himself the founder
of democracy and he owns the copyright.
Hi ha qui atribueix als grecs l'invent,
There are people who attribute the invention to the Greeks,
but with another meaning: government of the people.
Democràcia i monarquia per separat
Democracy and monarchy separately
ens van donar tan bon resultat
gave us such a good result
que les vam unir de forma experimental.
that we joined them experimentally.
And look how well it turned out, that we have won a World Cup.

Spanish Cities 3.3.6
Barcelona 3.3.6 -- last looks: Santa Caterina, Port Vell, Montjuic, Poble Sec, Sants
Tumblr media
This area seems to have several names. It's just outside the Ciutadella, on the southeastern edge, and so it's in what's left of La Ribera (which was demolished to build La Ciutadella). It's also called Santa Caterina, and El Born. The road is called Avinguda del Marqués de L'Argentera, next to the Passeig de la Circumval•lació. (pronounced 'pas-ACH' de la sir-cum-val-ya-SYO). That dot between the 2 l's you see a lot in Barcelona. It means you pronounce the 2 l's as 'l' and not as 'y' which is normal in Spanish (e.g. llamar - to call is 'yamar') and in Catalan (because Spanish doesn't use that dot.)
Tumblr media
Port Vell, Torre Jaume I - the midpoint of the Port Vell Aerial Tramway which goes from Barceloneta to Montjuic. (Note the cables that support the tram cars.)
Tumblr media
a view from Montjuic over Port Vell, down the Passeig Josep Carner toward the Columbus monument - (the statue on the column). The sea and port are on the right just out of frame.
Tumblr media
Another view of Port Vell showing the Torre de Jaume I from the Miramar Gardens on Montjuic and the tram cables. (I didn't do that ride, but def next time...) That tall building on the left background is in Port Olympic in Poblenou.
Tumblr media
Farther up the Montjuic hill, this view is from Mirador del Poble Sec. (Poblenou Sec is the name of the neighborhood below and to the left.)
Tumblr media
Also from the Mirador del Poble Sec, but farther to the left. This large building is off the Avinguda del Parral•lel. (note that dot again!) I don't know anything about it, except that the name Ikarus in Barcelona probably refers to the Socialist utopian experiment of Nova Icária in Poblenou.
Tumblr media
This series of towers has no purpose that I can see. I don't even think you can go into them. (They were locked when I was there.) They are next to the Sant Estació (bus and train station in Sants neighborhood) and the Parque de la Espanya Industrial.
Tumblr media
Next to those towers in the Parque Industrial D'Espanya was this pond that I liked. Again and again, Barcelona surprises with unusual architecture and monuments that have no purpose but to be interesting.
Tumblr media
Back in the Eixample, this is the corner of the Carrer Córsega and the Carrer D'enric Granados. Almost everywhere in the Eixample, in particular, and central Barcelona, in general, is beautiful and wonderful to explore. I will surely go back, both for the beauty and because I now have 2 friends there.
Tumblr media
Alas! Farewell to this multi-city adventure! One month only, but it seemed much longer, probably because I saw so much that was new... but without pushing myself at all! I was just drawn out and into the urban fabric of each of the fabulous cities I visited. Every morning I couldn't wait to go out and explore... and when I came back too early, I'd go out again. But also, it has changed the way I look at my own fabulous city of San Francisco. I see there are walks and sights that are amazing, everywhere, and in my own neighborhood, that I'll re-visit with new eyes.
With the drawing of this Love and the voice of this Calling
We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time. Through the unknown, unremembered gate When the last of earth left to discover Is that which was the beginning; At the source of the longest river The voice of the hidden waterfall And the children in the apple-tree.
--T.S. Eliot, Little Gidding (from Four Quartets)

The Factory by @bofillarquitectura, Sant Just Desvern, Espanya | From the architect. In 1973 Ricardo Bofill found a disused cement factory, an industrial complex from the turn of the century consisting of over 30 silos, subterranean galleries and huge machine rooms, and he decided to transform it into the head office of Taller de Arquitectura. Remodelling work lasted two years. The factory, abandoned and partially in ruins, was a compendium of surrealist elements: stairs that climbed up to nowhere, mighty reinforced concrete structures that sustained nothing, pieces of iron hanging in the air, huge empty spaces filled nonetheless with magic. The transformation process began with the demolition of part of the old structure to leave hitherto concealed forms visible, as if the concrete had been sculpted. Once the spaces had been defined, cleaned of cement and encompassed by new greenery, the process began of adaptation to the new programme. Eight silos remained, which became offices, a models laboratory, archives, a library, a projections room and a gigantic space known as "The Cathedral", used for exhibitions, concerts and a whole range of cultural functions linked to the professional activities of the architect. The complex stands in the midst of gardens with eucalyptus, palms, olive trees and cypresses. by _roomonfire | https://www.instagram.com/p/BY9EuTtgj5a/

If you’re visiting Barcelona and have a chance, you should go to Sitges, just a short train ride from the city. Sitges is a charming sea side town with great examples of Catalan Modernism architecture. This artistic movement appeared at the end of 19th century, at the time when the Industrial Revolution was fully developed. It’s considered the equivalent of Art Nouveau, and as such, it’s highly ornate finding inspiration in nature and asymmetrical shapes. An absolute joy to watch! 🙌😍 ☀️ 📸 😍 🙌 👓 🌊 #sitges #modernism #architecture #architecturephotography #catalanmodernism #modernismecatala #catalunyaexperience #catalonia #exploretheworld #explorecatalunya #igerscatalunya #arquitecturamodernistacatalana #europeantrip #travelphotography #sitgesturisme #sitgesarchitecture (at Sitges, Catalunya, Espanya) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2g8zvWozhR/?igshid=clza6u6qha1u
