The Lagniappe Sessions :: Taylor Zachry & Erin Rae
Erin Rae returns to AD with her third Lagniappe Session, this time as a duo with Taylor Zachry. A callback of sorts to her initial session from 2019, this installment once again finds the Nashville based singer-songwriter paying tribute to the enduring work of the late Gene Clark, covering “Out On The Side” and “Polly” – both tunes via Clark’s own late sixties collaboration with banjo player Doug Dillard.

Ray LaMontagne w/Gregory Alan Isakov and Erin Rae opening in Atlanta On a cool October night at the Cadence Bank Amphitheater, fans slowly filled the outdoor venue, the air buzzing with anticipation. The last time…

Top 50 Albums of 2022
11. This Is A Photograph by Kevin Morby
Before 2022, I incredibly had never heard of American singer-songwriter Kevin Morby or listened to any of his music – at least that I can recall anyway.
Whilst he may not be the most well-known artist here in the UK, with six acclaimed albums to his name and a regular output over the last decade, I’m surprised it took this long for his music to find me. However as fate would have it, another excellent recommendation from good Twitter pal Kiley Larsen (@Kilarzleesen) would land Morby’s majestic seventh studio album in my lap back in May.  Since then, it has remained in regular rotation the whole year after completely blowing me away on that memorable first listen.
Born out of a fear for his own mortality, which became heightened during lockdown and after his father collapsed before a family dinner in early 2020, This Is A Photograph is a deeply personal and deeply nostalgic tour de force. Wrapped in the warm folk, rock and country sounds you would associate with Tennessee, Morby shares family stories whilst also diverting into Memphis’ own tragic tales and wider historical folklore. Packed front-to-back with beautifully written songs and enriching sonic gifts from the Middle America region, it’s a darkly pensive but ultimately uplifting and hopeful experience.
With strong shades of legends Bob Dylan and Mike Scott throughout in both his vocal performances and his narrative songwriting, there’s also a real timelessness about This Is A Photograph. Not only will it keep you enraptured from beginning to end, but you will also constantly be coming back for more once it’s over. Powered by a stunning, gospel-tinged first half that includes must-hear moments such as the thunderous, foot-stomping title track, the gorgeous Erin Rae featuring Bittersweet TN andthe bluesy harmonica of Disappearing, it’s frequently wonderful with not a dull moment to be heard.
Morby manages to keep the momentum going in the second half too, with the strings steadily swelling in the background of Five Easy Pieces before he eventually unleashes the full power of his vocals around the three-minute mark, belting out a hair-raising cry of “how do you make a bad time last?” Stop Before I Cry which then arrives late on in the tracklist is probably the best song on the whole record for me. Built around gentle pianos, more soaring strings and an enduring melody, it is just magnificent in every single way. After the hazy cooing harmonies of It’s Over, stripped-back closer Goodbye To Good Times brings everything beautifully full circle with the closing few lines:
“Well, this is a photograph, A window to the past, Of a family growing old, Inside the boxing ring of time, In Bittersweet, Bittersweet, Bittersweet, Tennessee”
This may have been my first Kevin Morby album, but I feel like I have made up for lost time with the amount I’ve played this record throughout 2022. In any other year, this album would have likely cracked my Top 10 – it’s touching, heartfelt and tenderly crafted brilliance from start to finish.
Best tracks: Stop Before I Cry, Bittersweet TN, This Is A Photograph

Love/hate the House of Night series. I feel there was so much potential for this to be a killer story but it’s just. Like. That?

Here's a prompt for you: write a crossover between Erin and one of my X-Men/superhero OCs?
Little AU piece where Erin finds someone else rather than being sucked into the Brotherhood...
Might not be perfectly in character, I'm not 100% familiar with Rae.
When Rae opened the door, the last thing she expected to see was what looked to be a small dragon, dripping wet, standing on her front porch.
"I'm sorry." They shivered, blood oozing from a gaping gash in their wing. One of the thin, delicate bones in the scaly membrane of their wing was broken, and Rae wasn't sure how they had even survived in the air long enough to reach her. "They told me... you were safe. I didn't have anywhere else to go."
On second glance, what she thought was a dragon was actually a person, with vibrant, green-scaled skin, horns, wings- all the things one would expect a dragon to have. They were young, too- sixteen at the oldest, and likely a girl, but Rae couldn't quite tell with all the mutations.
"You're injured." Rae would normally say something far more elequent, but given that it was three in the morning and she had been roused from sleep less than five minutes ago, that would have to do.
"Please, no. No doctors."
Then, they fell. Crumpling to their knees, then collapsing onto the ground, the young mutant toppled into a heap of exhausted limbs on the porch. Rae sighed. Warren was gone, and so were the kids. She'd have to do this by herself. She could hopefully bring the kid down to Xavier in the morning, if she could coax them into it, but it was best not to scare them off already.
She'd seen this same wound on Warren before. Having a partner with wings made this easier- after all, the anatomy appeared to be the same, just minus the feathers. She didn't know who had shot the kid, but judging by the bruised flares of swollen purple in between their green scales, it had been part of a fight.
Rae picked up the kid, carrying them to the living room coffee table. She layed them out on their stomach, their wings flopping awkwardly down on either side of them. She took the broken one, laying it out on her lap, first aid kit on the table next to her- it'd come in too handy to justify putting back in the bathroom cabinet, after all.
The young mutant's wing was wrapped with bandages and treated with an antibacterial ointment. Thankfully, the bleeding had slowed enough that it didn't soak through the bandages, and the kid didn't show any other of the telltale signs of blood loss. They were likely just exhausted and injured.
The kid slept on that coffee table for nearly fourteen hours straight, despite Warren trying to wake them up on several occasions to ask who they were, and why they were there. When they finally awoke hours later, they were immediately greeted with a blanket and a mug of warm soup.
"Hi." The kid said shakily. The bruises under their scales had faded, giving Rae the impression that they had some kind of healing factor. "I'm sorry for passing out like that, it's... been a wild last twenty-four hours, to say the least."
"I can tell." Rae nodded. "What's your name?"
"Erin. Erin D'Amelio." The kid, Erin, wrapped their arms around themself. "I'm so sorry, again. I just didn't have anywhere else to go. They told me you were safe. You wouldn't let them find me."
"Is there someone after you?" Rae asked, worried for her family's safety.
"My parents." Erin explained. "Religious nutjobs, the both of them. I woke up looking like this yesterday, and my dad tried to kill me. They chased me to the county line in their truck, with guns and dogs, but I made it out. I learned how to fly."
Rae frowned. "Do you think they'll follow you here?"
"No, but... you know how it is. You find a runaway kid, you're supposed to give them back to their parents, right?" Erin took a sip of the soup. "I can't go back. They'll kill me. Fuck." A sudden look of realization crossed Erin's face. "I can't go back. I just realized that."
"I don't know what's going to happen right now." Rae put her hand on Erin's arm. The skin outside of their tee shirt sleeve was rough and scaly, almost sharp. "But I promise we'll find somewhere for you. Have you ever heard of Charles Xavier?"
