Community Leadership Program: Inside the Correctional System

Every few weeks the #bestclassever descends upon a new place in Greater Des Moines. This time our class was greeted by homemade cookies and lemonade in a large, bright, naturally lit meeting room with a children’s library tucked in the corner. After a few minutes of chit-chat and catching up, Warden Sheryl Dahm welcomed us to the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women.

My only previous experience with the Mitchellville facility was the metal freeway sign outside of town instructing me not to pick up hitchhikers. I really didn’t know what to expect, but the light, bright cheery visiting room certainly didn’t surprise me. Sheryl (it’s Sheryl here, not Warden Dahm), Lorie Woodward and Cord Overton introduced us to the facility with facts and figures about the Iowa Correctional System then told us about the gender-responsive corrections they have been focusing on in the year and a half Cheryl has been here. The gender-responsive correction approach starts with the understanding that women are wholly different than men and bring different challenges inside the fence with them. It then builds best practices focused on self-worth, self-care, focusing on human connection rather than punitive punishment. Does that approach work to reduce recidivism and prepare citizens to contribute to Greater Des Moines upon reentry? We were about to find out.

The next set of speakers was Kelly, Molly, Lucinda and Kathy. The women walked in accompanied not by a guard, but rather, a dog. Edgar is one of the therapy dogs on campus and never strayed too far from Kelly, his trainer. Kelly told us her story of a good life going from bad to worse under the influence of drugs and bad relationships. But she owned her mistakes. And, just as importantly, she owned her accomplishments. There was a humble, shy, but self-assured confidence emanating from beneath that navy sweat suit. As I listened to her story, and each of the three that followed, I couldn’t stop smiling. Yes, I know these women were hand-picked to come speak with our Community Leadership Program much in the same way the best choir student gets the solo, yet, it didn’t matter. This day was about hope, expecting the unexpected, and learning. Now, not every woman I heard from was like this. I shared dinner with one woman who seemed to approach life with her emotional fists poised and ready to jab. It still didn’t take away from the stories we heard in that light filled visiting room of the place that balances justice and mercy.

We made our visit a few days before election day which seemed to influence some of the questions my classmates raised. However, the love and goals of ICIW seemed to color outside of party lines which reminded me of why I was here. I was invited here to challenge the process, inspire a shared vision and encourage the heart of all people in my circle of influence.
