I see the deal that expired May 30 have given way to a new deal that expires June 30-to paraphrase The Who, "Meet the new deal / same as the old deal." The suggestion that the ink is hard to find seems overblown insofar as B&H lists a complete set for $119 ( ).Īnd the Pro-100 deal will still be there if you can't make the R1800 work or don't like its prints. If you need more inks-good chance you will-then Precision Colors will sell you a set of filled cartridges for $56 ( ). Maybe start with forum contributor and photo inkjet tinkerer guru Jose Rodriguez ("Jtoolman" here and on Youtube). If it doesn't print (or print properly), but doesn't seem dea, then I'm sure you can find some Youtube videos about clearing clogs etc. It does not have any gray inks, and therefore is less suitable for black and white photos than the models with the UltraChrome K3 inkset are. Supposedly there's a 'hole' in the R1800's gamut, where it does very poorly trying to reproduce certain colors in the green-brown spectrum.Ĥ. For whatever it tells you about Epson and their printers, the lower-end R1800, R1900, R2000, and P400 all have gloss optimizers, while the higher-up R2400, R2880, R3000, and P600 do not.ģ. Even though the R800 and R1800 added a gloss optimizer, which the older 2200 and newer R2400 do not have, the gloss optimizer does not solve all the problems. Lots of users report substantial clogging problems.Ģ. The Pro-100 can produce great prints on glossy, semi-gloss, and luster.ĪFAIK the main knocks against the R1800 (and R800) are:ġ. Clearly both types of ink have come a long way since 2005, but generally I'd bet that even the old pigment inks last better than the Pro-100's dye inks, and work better on matte / 'art' papers-but not as well on glossy and luster papers. I have done a lot of looking into pigment printers, especially those that are older and therefore presumably cheaper to acquire (which is much less the case than you'd think!).Īnyway, the most obvious comparison is that the Pixma Pro-100 / Pro-100S is a dye-ink printer, but the R1800 is a pigment-ink printer (UltraChrome Hi-Gloss inks). While I imagine the print head technology has improved a little since 2005, i would think the real difference would be in the ink tech we have now.Īnyone still using the R1800, any recommendations as whether to keep it or go for the upgrade?įirst a disclosure: we've got a Pixma Pro-100 at the office, but I've never used an R1800 (or its smaller and slightly older, but otherwise identical, sibling, the R800). I would be very interested to know how this printer would now compare to a more current printer such as the Pixma 100s. When The R1800 was released it was considered fairly good hobbiest photo printer and retailed for quite a lot of money.

I've just been gifted a 2005 Epson R1800 Photo Printer as the previous owner knew i was interested in buying the "new-ish" Canon Pixma Pro 100s. I would not waste more than the cost of one set of ink cartridges if you see clogging issues in the printer output. I had mine serviced locally to try to overcome that but clogging problems progressively worsened. The gamut of new high end Epson printers is reported to be much wider than what the R1800 could deliver but that hardly is an issue for creating nicely colored prints.Īs I recall there was a built in "kill switch" having to do with saturation of the ink pad that rendered the printer obsolete after a certain amount of use. I really like the color from this printer and its ink set but I have given up on it due to head clogging. I have made many hundreds of prints, if not thousands, with the thing. It still sort of works but it takes almost an entire set of increasingly hard to get ink cartridges to unclog it to make a few prints.Įven in its prime head clogging was a pain in the print carriage and I used it then at least once a week for several years. I have one of these sitting in my garage.

After several idle days, it nearly stopped printing red tones. In nearly 90 days of use, the printer operated flawlessly except for one incident. It printed our 8x10-inch test photo (on Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper using the Best quality option) in two minutes flat. It can't quite keep up with Canon for photo-printing speed, but it clearly outpaces the HP Photosmart 8750. In CNET Labs' tests, the R1800 was noticeably faster than the R800-conceivably the result of testing with different versions of the printer driver-and thus far ranks as the fastest for printing text among the medium-format photo printers. Wilhelm Research's initial print-life estimates for the UltraChrome Hi-Gloss ink set on various specialty papers indicate stability ranging from 64 to 200 years when properly mounted in a frame, under glass. Also, graphics had some slight printhead banding in the gradient fills, as well as some slight jaggies in the curves. Text looks extremely sharp, though under a loupe we spotted some minor irregularities. It also displays a very good dynamic range and color accuracy, as well as the best flesh tones of any of the photo printers we've seen thus far. Though not quite neutral, the R1800's grays show less variability under changing light sources than do those of its competitors. For more neutral monochrome, you'll have to opt for the R2400. The Stylus Photo R1800 does a reasonably good job with black-and-white output but creates composite grays, typically resulting in a slight color cast in the print. In practice, the trays do work well and have the advantage of being able to retract completely into the printer body when not in use. To protect them, consider locating the printer in a low-traffic area.

The R1800, like the HP Photosmart 8750, handles large-size output via a series of extendable plastic trays that seem rather flimsy. The Stylus Photo R1800 also offers roll-paper capability, which permits prints as large as 13x44 inches. It also provides a straight-through paper path for very heavy media, including CDs or DVDs. This design is easy to manage, though more prone to collecting dust than are cassette or front-feed paths. Like the R800, the 13x19-capable R1800 feeds paper through an L-shaped path, loading from the top and exiting in front. This coating overcomes the tendency of the black pigment inks to become perceptibly less glossy soon after drying as well as preventing bronzing in those areas. The eighth tank holds the gloss optimizer, which is applied when printing on glossy paper stock.

The Hi-Gloss ink set comprises six primaries: cyan, magenta, yellow, red, and blue, plus a choice of photo black or matte black, which both reside in the printer full time-no cartridge swapping required. It's virtually identical to its letter-size counterpart, the equally impressive Stylus Photo R800, but its UltraChrome Hi-Gloss ink set lacks the monochrome chops that Epson put into the new UltraChrome K3 inks, which debut in the Stylus Photo R2400. A perfect printer for the budget-minded photo fanatic, the medium-format Epson Stylus Photo R1800 delivers long-lasting, exhibition-quality color prints.
