45 With An Epic: Ben Holton interviewed by Eric Eggleson
(photo: Rob Glover) epic45 has been a band on my radar for many years. Ever since I saw the “Ghosts On Tape” video,
youtube
I started looking for more music by them and eventually other artists on their label. After purchasing their latest amazing new album, You’ll Only See Us When The Light Has Gone, I contacted Ben Holton about a possible Dagger interview. He agreed, so here we go. When did you begin your musical career? The word ‘career’ is a funny word to attribute to what I’ve been doing over the past 25 years as it suggests I set out to make a living from messing around with sounds. The first epic45 release came out in 1999, though, so I guess that’s a good place to say it started. What musical training do you have? None whatsoever, apart from a few production tips I picked up on a woeful ‘music production’ course I took part in in the early 2000s. Both my parents played guitar and I kind of learnt by osmosis. There was also a piano in the house I used to play around with. It was my little world, and I didn’t like anyone entering it and telling me the ‘right’ way of doing it. When did you feel that you made it in the field? Why? Again, a hard one to answer as, in many ways, I have never truly ‘made it.’ Our first release was played on Radio One by John Peel, so I think that gave us a lot of confidence. We had a quite combative attitude back then, a bit ‘us against the world’ which has held us in good stead ever since. Who influenced you the most in your musical career? I think discovering Mogwai around 97/98 was a big factor in us getting our shit together, and making us realise we could give it a proper go. Then, even more so, the band Hood, who we felt an instant kinship with. It felt a bit like ‘punk’ to us at the time. How did you come up with the name of your band? The origins are pretty foggy now, as it was quite some time ago, but I believe it was from looking through my mum’s old record collection and seeing the ‘Epic’ label and the ‘45rpm.’ I liked the idea of these small pieces of vinyl holding something so powerful and potentially meaningful. In hindsight, I don’t think the name has done us any favours, it’s not particularly ‘cool’ or anything. I don’t find that particularly important, but I recognize the possible impact it has had. I mean, ‘Prefab Sprout’ is an objectively awful name, but they are one of the best bands ever! Tell me about your record label. How did it start? The label started in 2006. As epic45, we were still part of the collective label Make Mine Music with our friends, but started to want to have our own little thing for side projects and things. MMM was great, but maybe felt a little disparate in its overall ethos and aesthetic. Eventually, MMM ended in 2012, and we had our own readymade label to continue releasing on, using the knowledge and skills we’d learned from being part of the collective. As for what determines what’s on the label, to put it very simply I have to like it. Obviously if it’s a Doom Metal album (a genre a really like) it might not end up on W&W (but I’d never say never). So, the music/artist has to share a sense of belonging with the existing ethos of the label, which is based around landscape, memory and place. That could sound quite a broad remit, but I will ultimately recognize whether something fits or not.

. #RuidodeFondoRadio #nettnettradio #internetradio #freeradio #musiccurator #musiccuration #mixtape #brokenhearts #mixtapeforbrokenhearts (en Mexico City) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpRJXM-uf_7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

45 With An Epic(Part 2): Ben Holton interviewed by Eric Eggleson
How do you decide if a song goes on as epic45, Birds In The Brickwork, My Autumn Empire, or The Balloonist? I usually realise fairly early on which project a piece of music will be released as. So, broadly speaking, My Autumn Empire has become a place where I try out more ‘traditional’ song structures, and have fun with extant forms. I don’t always conform to that idea though. Birds In The Brickwork is a vehicle for my photography as much as the music, so I see it as a sort of soundtrack to ‘seeing things’ in a way, which is why it’s all instrumental. The Balloonist was intended as a one off project to capture a very specific sound and aesthetic in my mind. However, it seems to have opened up a corridor of new ideas and approaches, which I’m excited to wander down. With epic45 I just have an instinctual feeling if something is ‘epic45.’ I think the main thing is that I’m more aware of the lineage of the albums and consciously like to react against the last release and not rest on any laurels. The latest album definitely is a final chapter in a certain way of working because if you don’t move on and attempt to surpass yourself, you drown. What the heck is Play Hours And Half Holidays? Play Hours And Half Holidays is Antony Harding from July Skies and me. The original idea was to capture live performances in unusual places, or just stolen moments. So, the first song we did was in my mum’s front room and the second was in a field in Wiltshire. There is short song we made in an antiques store which remains unreleased, plus another track called ‘Gardens’ that wasn’t made in the same way, so it’s just…floating in a nether-zone for now. What’s your favorite song to perform live? Why? Right at this moment, it’s ‘Brothers’ from the album Cropping The Aftermath. So much of that is down to playing along to James on the drums, it’s an absolute privilege. It’s one of the tracks that make me dance a little bit on stage. Here’s the video:
youtube
What’s your favorite cover of another band? We don’t do many covers; I’ve probably done more on my own really. But with epic45, I think my favourite recorded cover is the one we did of ‘Ideas As Opiates’ by Tears For Fears. Really pleased with how that turned out. On my Patreon, I have a request system and have had to cover bands such as Teenage Fanclub, Talk Talk and, believe it or not, Bananarama. It’s a lot of fun. Favorite venue to perform at? One of them definitely would be the Union Chapel in Islington, London as the acoustics are superb and the events put on by Daylight Music had such warm, friendly, and attentive audiences. It’s run by a guy called Ben Eshmade who has invited epic45 and My Autumn Empire to play at his events a few times over the years. They had to move the events from the Union Chapel, unfortunately, but the new venue looks nice. On the last tour, we played in a tiny room in a 16th century timber framed house (now a museum) and Mill Hill Chapel in Leeds. Both gigs made us realise we’re much more comfortable in slightly unusual venues, with small, but appreciative audiences. Who would you like to work with if you could? I’d love to work with Robert Wyatt. Just to have him sing over my music would be a dream come true. Unfortunately, I don’t think that is ever destined to happen now. I believe Robert is quite ill now and hasn’t been making music for quite a few years. It’s heartbreaking. I’d also love to work with Eberhard Weber. Although I’d be completely out of my depth from a musicianship angle, I’d still love to see what might happen.

45 With An Epic(Part 3): Ben Holton interviewed by Eric Eggleson
What comes first, lyrics or melody? Melody first, always. I really do believe you find the best melodies by ‘free singing’ over the music. Even lyrics can stick from this approach too. That said, I do write lyrics, but never usually have any music in mind when I’m writing them. They can then be twisted into shape using the melody I’ve come up with at a later date. What instrument do you usually begin writing songs with? Probably the guitar. However, I actually find it a lot more satisfying starting from unusual samples and loops, even rhythms. I’m finding more and more that melodies and lyrics can form over the most abstract and sparse sound beds; then you can add flesh to the bones gradually. I really like starting off really minimally and going from there. If you could switch to any other type of music, what would it be? Why? Probably some kind of metal or noise thing, as I like the freedom and release that comes with that kind of stuff. But I’d also love to make jazz-based music too and not knowing any techniques or being particularly proficient makes that quite an exciting prospect. Other than that, maybe some kind of minimal techno stuff would be fun too. How has Covid-19 affected you? For starters, it resulted in the cancellation of a tour of Japan in 2020. That was a pretty massive blow. We don’t really play live a lot, so I suppose it didn’t make too much difference in that area. To be honest, it’s Brexit that has had the most effect. It has made touring Europe a lot harder and also selling records. How has Covid-19 affected your songwriting? That’s hard to say. In 2020, we released the We Were Never Here photobook and album and I think a lot of people thought it was a response to what was happening, but we’d started work on it a few months prior. It just so happened to chime, eerily, with the times. However, the songs I wrote during the lockdowns, that eventually appeared on You’ll Only See Us When The Light Has Gone were definitely coming from a place of further scrutinization of society, possibly due to having a lot more time to (over)think things. Any new bands you like or would recommend? I have to say, I don’t really get a lot out of listening to new bands, apart from in the extreme metal side of things (which I won’t go into here – oh, go on then, listen to the latest Thantifaxeth album). (Wow, I just listened to “Solar Witch,” quite a difference from epic45!) Yes, indeed! But probably one of the most unique and exciting artists I’ve heard in recent times is Fire-Toolz, who makes an insane mash of vaporwave, shoegaze, dreampop, smooth jazz, and black metal. It’s like all of those things filtered through Autechre/Aphex Twin/Oneohtrix Point Never. Other than that, I just listen to tons of ECM artists from the 70s, 80s and 90s. How is the album, You'll Only See Us When The Light Has Gone selling? Pretty well, nearly out of the vinyl edition and a few CDs left. I’m amazed we sell as many as we do in this age of streaming, etc. It’s certainly nowhere near what we used to sell though, but times are different and weird now. Finish this sentence: I want to be remembered for… Sticking doggedly to my own lonely furrow.

No it's true--as much as I'm talking about spotify wrapped rn (yes i hate myself), the majority of music I've listened to this year has been on bandcamp and it's an infinitely better experience--the music you buy, you own, not paying rent to simply not have ads. You don't even have to buy an album on bandcamp to listen to it in most cases. Also a lot of artists will literally not set prices so it ends up being donation-only (donate a dollar to add it to your collection tho!) I have discovered so many amazing artists through bandcamp, including dollie rot, Rosie Diamond, epic45, and Flower Face. Support independent music!!
For real folks. Go to Bandcamp, pick a random artist and just buy an album for like 7 bucks. You don’t even have to download the files if you don’t want. The band gets 85% of the money.
#the one thing i wish bandcamp had was a playlist feature#also i wish some of my favorite artists like mother mother posted their music there:(#music#capitalism#anti spotify
