Developed by Eolith and SNK Playmore The King of Fighters 2002 Challenge to Ultimate Battle is like The King of Fighters 98 and is a dream battle edition with no story arc unlike The King of Fighters 2001 which also released in 2002. 

Like KOF98 this game has a broad roster featuring fighters from the previous entries in the King of Fighters series. It does feature one new character in Kusanagi. 

The King of Fighters 2002 Challenge to Ultimate Battle released in Arcades and on the Neo Geo in 2002, with Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 and Xbox releases coming over the next two years. The game has also seem many ports over the years, the most recent to Android and iOS in 2022.

Console Fighting Games of 2002 - The King of Fighters 2001

Released in arcades in 2001, The King of Fighters 2001 would be ported to consoles the following year, with releases on the Neo Geo and Dreamcast. The King of Fighters 2001 is the 8th entry in the King of Fighters series and was developed by BrezzaSoft (Founded by ex-SNK staff) and Eolith.

In 2001 SNK went bankrupt, in the same year Eolith South Korean developers were able to negotiate a licencing agreement to continue the King of Fighters series. 

The King of Fighters 2001 has a roster of 40 plus 2 boss characters and three strikers on offer with many returning fighters on the roster as well as a good selection of new fighters joining the roster, with K9999, Ángel, May Lee Jinju, Original Zero, Glaugan and Igniz.
