Enya

Enya è la cantante irlandese che ha riscosso più successo nel mondo, nonostante abbia vissuto una vita lontana dai riflettori e non abbia mai fatto un tour.

Ha inciso otto album in studio e due raccolte, l’ultimo disco è Dark Sky Island, risalente al 2015.

Ottanta milioni di copie vendute e numerosi i riconoscimenti e i premi ricevuti, tra cui quattro Grammy Awards, sette World Music Awards, due Japanese Gran Prix Awards, due IRMA Awards, un premio Echo, due lauree honoris causa e una nomination al Premio Oscar e al Golden Globe.

Enya è una approssimazione fonetica derivata dalla pronuncia in lingua gaelica del vero nome di Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin, che corrisponde all’inglese Enya Patricia O’ Brennan.

Il gaelico è la prima lingua di questa formidabile compositrice, nata a Gweedore, nella regione del Donegal, nel Nord Ovest dell’Irlanda, il 17 maggio 1961, in una famiglia di musicisti.

Con la sua musica, sospesa tra mitologia celtica e New Age, dalla sonorità eterea, a tratti onirica, scelta come accompagnamento musicale a numerosi film di successo è riuscita a esportare nel mondo la cultura, i misteri, la magia della tradizione popolare fatta di miti arcaici e sacralità.

Ha iniziato a cantare insieme ai tre fratelli nella band di famiglia, i Clannad, una delle istituzioni del folk irlandese, nel 1982 ha lasciato il gruppo e iniziato la sua carriera insieme al produttore e manager Nicky Ryan e a sua moglie Roma Ryan, scrittrice e paroliera, che le scrive i testi in diverse lingue.

I suoi primi lavori sono state le musiche per il film The frog prince e la colonna sonora di The Celts documentario della BBC.

A partire da Watermark del 1988, hit internazionale che ha venduto dieci milioni di copie, diventando un classico della musica contemporanea, si è evidenziato il suo stile costituito da numerose sperimentazioni sulla voce.

La fama internazionale è arrivata anche grazie al suo stile così diverso e innovativo da portare una ventata New Age a tutta l’industria musicale. Le sonorità tipiche della sua terra le hanno aperto la strada verso un successo senza precedenti rendendola una delle donne più ricche nel mondo della musica.

Molte sue canzoni sono state utilizzate per film e pubblicità d’ogni sorta.

Nonostante avesse rifiutato di comporre la colonna sonora del colossal Titanic le musiche somigliano talmente a quelle che produce lei che, spesso, le sono state attribuite.

La canzone Only Time, contenuta nell’album A Day Without Rain, dopo l’11 settembre 2001, è stata utilizzata come sottofondo in molti servizi radio e televisivi diventando la colonna sonora dei tristi giorni dell’attentato. Anche se all’inizio ne era contrariata, Enya ne ha poi pubblicata una versione speciale per raccogliere fondi per le famiglie delle vittime che ha riscosso un tale successo da farla entrare per la prima nella Top 10 della Billboard Hot 100 e ottenere l’importante premio Echo.

Nello stesso anno è uscito anche May It Be per la colonna sonora del primo film della saga Il Signore degli Anelli, che le ha portato una nomination all’Oscar.

Alla fine del 2009 la cantante è stata nominata Artista New Age del decennio dalla Billboard.

Nel 2015 è uscito il suo ultimo album Dark Sky Island, che contiene, come di consueto, brani in diverse lingue, tra cui l’inglese, il latino e il loxian, linguaggio fittizio creato da Roma Ryan nel 2005, ispirato dai linguaggi tolkeniani usati da Enya nei brani contenuti nella colonna sonora del film La Compagnia dell’Anello, e utilizzata per la prima volta in due brani del suo album Amarantine.

Enya è un approccio alla musica, alla vocalità, alle tecniche di registrazione. Un’esperienza sensoriale e al contempo “astratta”, che pare scaturire da una dimensione insondabile, fuori dal tempo, dove il fascino ancestrale del folk celtico e la solennità della musica sacra si sposano a un sound elettronico moderno. È un genere musicale a sé, una di quelle geniali invenzioni destinate a rimanere un unicum. Arcana incantatrice, ha impersonato un viaggio onirico e celestiale, eppure sensuale come un rito primitivo, racchiuso in una scintillante scorza hi-tech. Le sue partiture combinano l’austerità della musica classica con il melodismo immediato del pop, le suggestioni della musica sacra e medievale con stratificazioni sonore degne degli inizi dell’elettronica. Il suo contralto angelico, sapientemente corroborato in studio grazie alla tecnica di multivocals, per una sola canzone registra e sovrappone fino a cento voci, raggiungendo il risultato di un coro polifonico degno dei più solenni canti gregoriani.

Schiva e molto riservata, vive arroccata nel suo castello, un vero castello, evitando il contatto con i media e nascondendo la sua privacy.

Enya è una protagonista unica e inconfondibile della musica contemporanea.

My sister and I were taking about Enya, and I offhand wondered whatever happened to her, and my sister said that she’s worth £91 million, bought a castle outside Dublin and lives there with a load of cats.

We just sat in silence for a moment, thinking of glorious Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin, living the dream.

Enya Patricia Brennan born 17 May 1961), known professionally as Enya, is an Irish singer, songwriter, record producer and musician. Born into a musical family and raised in the Irish-speaking area of Gweedore in County Donegal, Enya began her music career when she joined her family's Celtic folk band Clannad in 1980 on keyboards and backing vocals. She left in 1982 with their manager and producer Nicky Ryan to pursue a solo career, with Ryan's wife Roma Ryan as her lyricist. Enya developed her sound over the following four years with multitracked vocals and keyboards with elements of new age, Celtic, classical, church, and folk music. She has sung in ten languages.

Enya's first projects as a solo artist included soundtrack work for The Frog Prince (1984) and the 1987 BBC documentary series The Celts, which was released as her debut album, Enya (1987). She signed with Warner Music UK, which granted her artistic freedom and minimal interference from the label. The commercial and critical success of Watermark (1988) propelled her to worldwide fame, helped by the international top-10 hit single "Orinoco Flow". This was followed by the multi-million-selling albums Shepherd Moons (1991), The Memory of Trees (1995) and A Day Without Rain (2000). Sales of the latter and its lead single, "Only Time", surged in the United States following its use in the media coverage of the September 11 attacks. Following Amarantine (2005) and And Winter Came... (2008), Enya took an extended break from music; she returned in 2012 and released Dark Sky Island (2015).

She is Ireland's best-selling solo artis and second-best-selling artist behind U2, with a discography that has sold 26.5 million certified albums in the United States and an estimated 75 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. A Day Without Rain (2000) remains the best-selling new-age album, with an estimated 16 million copies sold worldwide. Enya has won awards including seven World Music Awards, four Grammy Awards for Best New Age Album, and an Ivor Novello Award. She was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for "May It Be", written for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001).
